Charged a $100 service fee to come out and assess the problem(s) for tenants, which doesn't apply to repair job cost if you go with them (DON'T go with them) + undisclosed $200 labor fee/hr. So really they need to say it's $300 to come and assess. I authorized $100 service fee, but was unaware of the $200 labor charge until after I was billed. They verbally gave a quote estimating 4 hours & $200/hr for the jobs (new kitchen faucet, new garbage disposal and to reset toilet) + $435 in parts. Next day, they came and it only took 3 hours for the jobs. I notice water heater is leaking while he's there and told plumber we need a new one and he said he could get me a quote (he glanced at the water heater for the size and said it was old-that was it). Quoted a fix for the water heater $2200 for water heater + installation (clear rip-off and didn't use them for this job). I was billed for 4 hours of work on day 2 (even tho they were only here for 3 hours), $100 service fee for day 2 to do the agreed upon work...not assess a new job?!), $200/hr plumber fee from day 1 that I was not told about. My card provided for the initial service fee of $100 on day 1 was used to charge the final bill without my authorization. I get a phone notification my card was charged and was surprised since I hadn't authorized yet. Once I looked at the bill I was surprised again at the 4 hour service instead of 3 hours for the time they were there, $100 service fee for day 2 and $200/hr plumber fee from day 1. I called to dispute and they tried to explain these additional, bogus fees AFTER my card was charged and did not attempt to adjust/credit my bill. They only offered to give a $150 credit for the next job! Plus there is no warranty noted for any of the work performed!? They referred me to the sink and disposal manufacturer warranty. Needless to say I will not be using them again. Steer clear of this shady business and find a reputable plumbing company...the other reviews speak to this. I just wanted to update my review from before. Our sink in the bathroom still was leaking and the noise was starting again. We decided to call Captain Rooter. We had no idea how bad Rob West had messed up our bathroom. They actually used the wrong cartridges. They filed them down. They jammed them in and epoxied them close. Which according to captain rooter is NOT the way to do it. Captain rooter had to cut into our wall and we have to replace the ENTIRE faucet. I really warn you against even trying this company. We not only paid Rob West 2K for a job that he never fixed...we are now paying another company to fix all of their awful mistakes. Brutal. I'm all about supporting local, but if you don't know what you are doing, just be honest! They really f*'d our bathroom up and now we are left to deal with it. read more

We have had water damage from the third floor units master bath tub. The drain wasn't connected. Rob West was called to researchers issue and let me be very clear that Alex his plumber was very professional and respectful. Laid out our options. Which was to enter through my unit as the easiest or pull the tub in the third floor unit which is more time consuming. He said this on more than one interaction. Times have changed from my first review. Now, Gladys the Admin/Office Mgr seemed to be over involved in our condo associations communications from the beginning. She called me to discuss what was happening between unit 1 and 3. Now, that was first thought is this is out of bounda but informative . Her continued conversations were Quite unnecessary and extremely UN appreciated / unwarranted and very unprofessional. Here's her email where she's out of line and out of bounds. See BELOW. The 2nd floor toilet starting leaking into the first floor bathroom. Couldn't get callbacks from many of the plumbers I called. Made the appointment for someone to look at my water heater and was told there was a $100 charge up front for someone to come out [have never been asked to make a payment up front for any kind of repair labor but paid anyway], and other charges would be added on if there were issues/repairs needed. The person was 2 hours late and I had to call the office for updates. I still don't know the person's name who came in, because he didn't introduce himself. He was rude for most of the time he was there and we talked, looking at the water heater for about 20mins. No service was performed. Not even a tool pulled out. Later I get a call that my card number had been written down incorrectly and needed to be updated to get charged. I get the receipt, and was charged an extra $189 undisclosed amount. I call back and I am told it is a "diagnostic fee" and I explain to them, there was nothing to diagnose and that this fee was not disclosed when I made the appointment. The person answering the phones talks to the owner, who then says that the fee is correct. He then says I can speak to the owner, but I say no due to the reviews saying the owner yells at people ... and I have no time to deal with that behavior. I have had tons of work on my place in the 10yrs I have owned it and I have never had service like this. I understand there are fees for coming out to a call (and gladly pay them), but the breakdown on this was sketchy and purposely unclear. I also requested an itemized invoice, and never got it. I used them last year for a problem my tenant had in his unit. They did show up but the issue was not resolved and the charges were ridiculous. I really wanted to try to support local businesses in my area but this is an example of why it's hard to. Then I was overcharged which I caught and confront them about. You could be putting your home and wallet at risk by choosing Rob West Plumbing. The experience we had was expensive and unpleasant. Interacting with Rob was the worst part, and he proved to me to be an untrustworthy person who takes advantage of homeowners. We called them out to snake a drain and replace a cartridge in our shower, during which, they caused a leak, and had to come out a second time for which they charged us exorbitantly. I urge you not to work with people like this, and don't give them your money. Several complaints I have from my experience: 1 - No formal quotes process (verbal or written): The onus is on the business to provide proof of contract but the plumbers do not discuss costs before doing work. This puts you at risk when you get blindsided by a bill and then it becomes a matter of he said, she said to work things out. During the first appointment, I prompted the conversation about cost, and they verbally ballparked $700. The appointment ended up costing ~$1,000. During the second appointment, in action and word, the plumbers took responsibility for the leak. Because of this, we did not prompt a conversation on costs, and, critically, they did not indicate during the visit that they would charge us. We received a bill for $920 later that evening. We were naïve as new homeowners not to press for more transparency, but again, it is the business's responsibility to provide proof of contract - if you choose to work with Rob West Plumbing, demand written quotes for work to protect yourself. 2 - Refuses to take accountability: If anything goes wrong with your project, they will screw you over. The leak I described above outlines this experience. Watch them like a hawk while they're working, and question any costs or materials they propose you need. 3 - Unprofessional and unscrupulous: Rob West proved to be the worst part of this whole thing. We got into an argument when I called to dispute the charges for the second visit. He was immediately dismissive of my perspective. He was manipulative and patronizing. He came off as erratic and unprofessional. I suspect that he regularly bullies homeowners who push back on him. In reviewing Yelp reviews after the fact, it looks like others have had the same experience. Yikes. 4 - Poor administrative processes: Billing and invoice documentation isn't transparent. They charged us a $150 hourly rate for the first visit and $200 for the second, and hoped we wouldn't notice. Rob claimed that $150 was a discounted rate when we called him out, but this wasn't disclosed at all. Scheduling the initial appointment should have been a red flag. I had to follow up several times to even get an appointment, for which Rob was full of excuses. I waved it off as a local business with a small team, so they don't have a dispatcher, but they just don't manage the business well. I had to remind them of my issue several times via email and phone. Interestingly, they were able to take note of my credit card information just fine the first time around. 5 - Money grubbing: As many have indicated, they charge $100 to make an appointment. I understand charging a consultation fee (if the homeowner chooses not to move forward), but this unnecessary charge doesn't go toward your bill. It's in addition to the hourly rate and materials. On top of the other issues we had, it adds to the appearance that Rob West Plumbing is a money grubbing business that doesn't really care about their customers and community as they claim. The resolution to our business with Rob West Plumbing was unsatisfactory. After our argument, he emailed to discount the second visit by $300 (so we would pay $620) 'in the hopes of developing a working relationship.' We asked that he correct the hourly rate and we ultimately paid $420 for a leak they caused. Pursuing this any further is cost prohibitive on the part of the homeowner, and honestly interacting any more with Rob sounds like a nightmare. read more

Very overpriced. They received $100 before they came to my house. Did NOT even look at or observe ceiling leak. Had to look at laundry room of unit above. Touched around wall and floor, some moisture and water noticed. Said above unit owners should contact air-conditioning professional and have water heater and air conditioning unit checked out. BUT probably had no relation to my problem. They NEVER even looked in my ceiling, Said they did not know what problem was. and Then charged my card $389. NO EXPLAINATION Three phone calls to have owner, Rob, scream at me on phone!!! Terrible service!! terrible treatment! AND the workers sent out, SMELLED badly of body odor. Disgusting!!! Rob West and his team HAVE ALWAYS DONE RIGHT BY ME. I literally just got off a 2 hour phone call with Rob himself where he took the time out of his day to help me understand the intricacies of our building's plumbing and to brainstorm ways that I can do a TON of the easy footwork myself. And he charged nothing for these two hours! This is why he is ALWAYS my go-to-guy. Now I can do the easy investigating and don't have to drain our HOA Reserves on easy labor hours that we can do ourselves. Yes, he literally gave up easy labor hours for the sake of our HOA Reserves. What a guy. Just a heads up though. Rob can talk your ear off and I mean that in the absolute highest of compliments because information is king and he knows what he's talking about. He also absolutely CRUSHED all the quotes/bids we conducted with other plumbing companies and his work was top notch. Oh, and he was available much easier and much sooner than the rest. My father-in-law was a 50 year plumber and he said they did a really nice job. Good work and good cleanup. Rob West and I spoke prior to the drain cleaning. He is not a big operation (3 employees). He described himself as someone who was flexible and didn't want clients to feel 'taken advantage' of. That's important to me so I decided to hire him. His plumbers (Alex and Son) came out, snaked the drain, ran water for 20 minutes and left. I was happy. They DID NOT camera the line or ask to camera the line to ensure that the drain was fully cleared and three weeks and $600 later, I was back to square one. When I called Rob to discuss that his work had not resolved the problem, he was very defensive, rude and unprofessional in addressing my frustration as a customer. He insinuated that I was not telling him the truth when I told him that I was not asked to camera the drain. He interrupted me throughout or conversation and described my concerns as 'crazy'. It's clear by the amount of talking and minimal listening Rob does on the phone, he feels he can talk his way out of problems. As a client, I look for companies who stand by their work when unfortunate issues arise and when a customer is unsatisfied by striving to resolve in a mutually beneficial and fair way. Rob took the position that "when he leaves a job, it's no longer his problem." I would agree with that position if it had been 3 years later or even 3 months later but when the problem arises again 3 weeks after you leave, I would hope to see a more ethical response and intention to resolve. I was willing to pay a fair rate for the camera work required but we were so far off on what we thought was fair. Quickly, it was clear that he was going to nickel and dime me for the rest of our engagement. After an hour of him bantering, I decided it was best we part ways as he was clearly not looking to turn an unsatisfied customer into a raving fan. I would not recommend Rob West Plumbing to anyone. Alex and his son (the actual plumbers who came to my house that day) are fantastic, kind and reasonable as far as I could tell. We purchased a 2-flat in 2018 and he's fixed MULTIPLE issues (leaky bathtub, leaky toilets, slow kitchen drain, and--the big one--frozen pipes during the January 2019 polar vortex.) Problem was not fixed correctly the first time, problem returned within 24 hours of them leaving and then when the company was called and informed of this, they asked if it was something that we were able to fix ourselves - if not then they could send out someone to fix it - BUT CHARGE us again for the time spent fixing what wasn't fixed correctly the first time! I'd like to say I really appreciate them making an early morning appointment for me to look at my disposal before work, to get me taken care of sooner rather than later especially with drain-clogging-idea of Thanksgiving at my place looming. The guy that stopped by was very polite and even showed up a little early. /compliments He flipped on the disposal, heard nothing and immediately told me that I needed a new one...$300 incl new disposal and labor. He spent a total of 2 seconds jiggling an allen wrench underneath it and that was it. Me, being the frugal-minded cheapass I am, figured "well if I can do it myself, cheaper, I will!" So I said "thanks, but no thanks." TO THE YOUTUBES!!!! Immediately I found a video on how to troubleshoot a disposal. Step 1: if you don't hear anything, check underneath. Push in red button. -- Voila. Disposal fixed. Now I'm not a professional, but I expect the professionals to know this. Maybe it was an honest oversight, but c'mon, to quickly assume the entire thing needed to be replaced...for $300!!!? I'd like to think they're taking care in exploring every option first. Total waste of 245 dollars. Nice guy, but what I got for a 215 dollar service call is a faucet that was "fixed" only to have the same problem when he was done the next day. Now I realize that fixing things means some trial and error, but all other service people I have used do not charge the entire "new" service fee for each subsequent visit out, just their hourly rate if it is for the same job. His thought was that I would pay him 215$ again so he could have a second try at fixing it. So for 430$ I will get a guy to "maybe" fix a faucet. He literally stated that if the second fix did not work I would have to pay another 215$ for him to come out to put in a new faucet. 645$ for installing a faucet! Do not use Rob West plumbing. We were convinced by Rob to fix something that wasn't broke (first red flag) and quoted $1,000 to do the job. The next day we find out it would cost $400 more to finish the work. We reluctantly agreed. Almost 1 month later, we get an invoice for an extra $1,000. If I had found out this at the time, I would have found a new plumber! I will never use this company again and will advise others to do the same. read more

I liked Rob West when Tom was working for them. He was always friendly, professional, and honest... but Tom no longer works there and now they just blow me off... I sent a concise email asking for them to come by for service and after a few days of no contact, I sent another one and they finally called me that day. The guy asked me 5 questions - to which the answers for all were already included in the email. He said he would call me back and then never did... like really? I heard they lost at least one other plumber as well so not a good sign right now that they can handle jobs. I have also found that their ~$240 service fee is up to double of some other honest professional plumbers in the area... so I will never be calling Rob West again. Initially I reached out to Rob's shop because they were local and I like the idea of working with small businesses. Unfortunately, that is what plagued them in the end. My needs were not an urgent plumbing matter- my shower only dispensed really hot water, borderline scalding, which is not pleasant to use, but I've been dealing with it for a few months now. After playing some phone tag to reach them, I was able to explain my needs to Ralph. He promised he would call me back the next day with a quote on the work and to schedule a time to come out. Three days later I still had not received a follow-up call. I called in and had to re-explain my needs to a different guy, but ultimately he had to have Ralph call me back to schedule a time. We scheduled them to come out on a Wednesday morning. I took the morning off of work to be home while they worked. They said they would be there between 7-7:30 and didn't show until 8:30. After taking my shower apart, they informed me they did not have the right part and needed to visit their supplier and would have to take my part with them. They also informed me that it could not be done in the same day and they would have to come back tomorrow. There was also the chance that it would be a different technician. I was not very comfortable with the idea that the guy who would be putting it back together was not the same person who took it apart. It was the end of the day and I still had not heard from Ralph about when they would be coming out the next morning - I'll have to take off from work then too. I called in and Ralph informed me that they do not have enough guys to send out tomorrow and would have to wait until at least Friday before they could come out. This puts me without a usable shower for 2 days. They did eventually complete the job and which was satisfactory. Bottom line is they are a small shop and they operate like one. Their prices were a little high. You might expect a lower price given they have less overhead than a bigger company. read more

5 Stars all the way!!! I called Rob to see about options for some kind of flood control for my basement. I liked that he offers several different options depending on the individual situation. Though I knew I would probably hire Rob after our first phone conversation - he doesn't come out for free estimates. He actually cables the sewer line to locate everything pertaining to the job. I brought him in last - since I knew my sewer line needed some rodding anyway. I talked to 5 different companies, 4 of which gave me detailed estimates. My instincts were correct to hire Rob. He came out with John on a Saturday to do the evaluation and rod our line. They thoroughly explained everything with our current systems and the best solutions. We decided to go with a 'modified" overhead sewer system. The basement drains, toilet, and washer/dryer are no longer connected to the city sewer line. They now drain into an ejector pit which pumps the waste water up to the main stack. Sewer will never flood my basement. I think there needs to be 6 feet of water outside in order for gravity to push the sewage up to my first floor.. Rob called with the estimate 2 days later - gave me the price $6000. After talking to the other companies, I was ready to pull the trigger on this one. Great news was they could start tomorrow. They showed up on time ready to work (Jermaine and Ed). Friendly and hardworking. Worked all day excavating the basement floor. After 1 or 2 days we talked to Rob about having some rough in plumbing so we can build a bathroom down there. They threw that in for $1500 and also moved my Hot Water Heater and added an extra floor vent. This was a big job and every one of the workers were first rate - Jermaine, Ed, John, Luke, and of course Rob. Job took 5 days. Communication with Tom, in the office, was also pleasant. Excellent job by all of them - I couldn't be happier. And they finished a couple of days before our first big rain - I slept easy that night. Thanks Rob! I can't say enough great things about Rob West Plumbing. Due to the jerk that is the Polar Vortex where our temperature dropped to -10 degrees, the water pipes burst in my apartment. I found Rob on Yelp at 7:22am in a total panic. I said that I didn't know where my water shut-off valve was in my building but begged him to come over ASAP because water was freely flowing into my living room. Luke was in my house in 20 minutes. He turned off the water immediately, found the problem, fixed the problem and gave me a price of about half of what I was expecting to pay for an emergency plumbing call. Rob West Plumbing is the BEST! They totally could have taken advantage of the situation and charged me whatever they wanted because I would have paid it, having no basis of comparison. But, Rob West Plumbing was super fast, honest, and efficient.... Which is so completely refreshing, especially in Chicago. read more

I am a real estate broker here in Chicago, and have been using Rob West Plumbing and referring them for several years (actually refer dozens of clients a year). Overall I think that they do top notch work that is worthy of 5 stars, alas they along with every other contractor out there is not perfect. As mentioned by other reviewers, their scheduling is not the best. Most services can give you a pretty small window, as they give you a big block of time, and say they will call day of. For busy people, this could be problematic where you can't block off 3-4 hours of your day for a 30 minute service call. Second, they sure are expensive! But if you want good quality service in Chicago you are going to have to pay for it. At the end of the day their work is very solid, and a reliable plumber is hard to come by, thus they continue to get my business. read more

As a Property Manager for 50+ single unit condos and multi-unit buildings, finding reliable, professional, and honest contractors to work with is like finding gold, period. Rob West Plumbing has been so wonderful for at least a dozen (and I am sure many more in the future) service calls I have required their help with. Rob, the Owner, is responsive and very knowledgeable. Luke is efficient and hard working- no nonsense type of guy, and Tom is my go to guy when I need about 5 billion questions answered, advice for my Home Owners and whatever else plumbing related. There is nothing worse than being without hot water. Grrrr... I called Rob at around 7:30am today, and Tom the Plumber was at my door by 8am. Impressive! Not only was Tom helpful, but he didn't mind my two pitbulls following him around. :) Both Rob and Tom were professional, courteous, helpful and explained everything. Rob had done plumbing work for me, and clients/friends for years as an independent plumber. I never met a plumber who took pride in his work. And pride doesn't mean, "hey, I do good work, check it out." I'm talking he made soldering joints into artwork. He would hang on them after he finished to show how strong he made them. He always worked within my budget, and pointed out things that were enivronmentally dangerous. And he would even show me how to do things on my own when I was willing to learn. But then he branched out, and became a full-service plumbing contractor. Naturally, I worried that service would decline. So, the other day, I had a major clog in my building, not some kitchen scraps. A secretary called me to confirm that two guys would be at my place at 7. They showed up, friendly and ready to work. They pointed out areas I should consider fixing in the future without convincing me that if I didn't do it my plumbing system would collapse. They didn't screw around. They gave me additional tips on how to maintain my building's drain lines, and I can't stress this enough...cause I was worried about getting bilked by the hourly rate as opposed to a bid job....they worked and worked and got the heck out. I was able to speak with Rob right away, and the next day he came to the house to talk about what system might work best for my needs. We settled on a system and a price, and the work started the next day. Upon completion, the project came in at the agreed on price. His crew was polite, professional, and got the work complete on time. One thing I liked about dealing with this company was the fact that there was a constant line of communication with Rob, the owner of the business. Recommended by a friend. I had various jobs for a new (to me) condo. Charged me over $400 to clean out a pop up on a sink and put in a new flapper in toilet tank. I called to dispute charge and it is true I agreed to it as they were here doing work and I figured I'd deal with it later. It's on me I didn't cancel the job when the guy had a terrible case of the shakes--for whatever reason. Ice maker stopped working shortly after they worked on it but not about to try them again. I finally found Rob West Plumbing and thought I'd give a shot due to the great reviews. I was not disappointed! Rob showed up within 45 minutes of the first phone call and had my toilet fixed within 10 minutes. He was very professional and courteous. He also could have charged me the weekend hourly rate, but given that he was literally in my place for about 20 minutes, he cut me a huge break. We had Rob West plumbing service a leaking toilet in one of our upstairs bathrooms. Tom was the plumber who made the visit and he was prompt and friendly. He made a quick diagnosis and fix---and he showed me, step by step, what was wrong and how he was going to fix it. The best part of the experience is when he was leaving, he noticed and odd smell coming from our laundry room. We'd been struggling with a stopped bathtub drain for weeks and then our kitchen pipes started leaking, so we threw in the towel and found a plumber. Rob West was recommended on a FB post in my neighborhood group, so after seeing good Yelp reviews I called them up. They were able to come out the next day without problem, took care of everything while I was at work, and I came home to everything fixed and no sign that they'd even been there. I had a small issue with the bill, but when I called to discuss, Christina was very responsive and everything was quickly settled. Chad came to the house within an hour of calling. We were originally told that we had to wait like 3 to 4 hours. He came in knew exactly what needed to be done advised us of every option. He got us in touch with Ozzie who came 15 minutes after Chad and got water restoration process begun. Ozzie got everything working quickly and efficiently and gave us advice on future things to look for. A few hours later Chad returned and we got in touch with my insurance company and that process started as well.
