Came into this place with my kids after a long drive from NJ. The staff was so friendly to us. The homemade bread was delicious - and the salad dressings were good. My Fiance and I had dinner 2 nights ago. I had the lobster and ceasar, which were very good. My Fiance had the cheeseburger, cole slaw and house salad. He was terribly ill all night and the next day, which was the 4th of July. I phoned the restaurant on the 5th of July just to let them know, and the Mgr. told me there was a GI going around!!! I couldn't believe it!!! I described in detail what my Fiance had and that the coleslaw tasted as though it was made with a blue cheese dressing. Had Prime Rib special take out twice so far during the COVID-19 lockdown. It was excellent both times - cooked just right with tasty potatoes (baked and then roasted red potatoes) and veggies. The Roadhouse is back to its old self, and that's a good thing. I've been going to The Roadhouse for over fifteen years, through two owners. Although I never had a bad meal there, the quality wasn't as great after it changed ownership a few years ago. But with tonight's meal, the food is not only back to its former quality, it clearly surpassed it. The fresh-baked bread was warm and crusty, and the slices were generous. The salads were an interesting mix of greens, veggies and tomatoes, and the corn & tomato chowder tasted like it had just been made and it wasn't salty, as many restaurant soups are. We had two entrees: shrimp scampi over linguine, and pecan-encrusted tilapia. The shrimp were perfectly cooked until tender and not overcooked, and the white wine & garlic sauce was buttery and tangy. The tilapia was tender on the inside, crunchy on the outside, and looked great. The Roadhouse served both dishes piping hot, and with a side of fresh green beans and a mixed vegetable ragout. The fish also came with rice. Entrée prices on the menu are mostly in the $20+ range. Our server was attentive and cheerful, and knew the menu well. My main suggestion for The Roadhouse is that they could throw on a new coat of paint. But that won't dissuade me from returning. read more

Glorified cafeteria food. Large portions. Thursdays make it a value at $9, but regular menu prices are wayyyyyyyy too high for what you're getting. The bar seemed very popular, but we were in the dining room. Poutine was...surprisingly good. Potatoes fried very well, lots of cheese (not curds, but who cares), and what tasted like Knoor demi for the gravy (which also had mushrooms in it). All junk...but tasty junk. So our reservation was at 8pm. We were seated very quickly. I cannot agree with how quickly it took for a waiter to come take our order. Approximately 20 minutes. The bread came. This bread changed my life. A beautiful honey wheat loaf that was spectacular. Cheers to the baker. Then the soup. I bet if you put it in the oven at 375 you would have a seafood cupcake. The roux was underdone and the flour was raw. We took the main course home. I waited so long for this experience that i decided to write this review while waiting for the dessert. Let's start with the clam chowder. They had no oyster crackers and it was very liquidy and not thick. For the main course I got ribs. It was so well done I couldn't cut it. It was way too tough. We had a pretty good experience here. Nothing awful. We arrived at 6:30 for dinner during the comparatively slow summer months and were seated right away by a waitress who seemed tight-lipped but who grew more friendly as the meal progressed. We didn't realize we had arrived on a popular special evening when for $34.95 the restaurant offers two entrees, salad, veggies, bread and desserts and a bottle of wine. Pretty good deal--as long as you understand the wine bottles are either a) a chardonnay or b) a merlot. We took the chardonnay; it was drinkable. Could you expect more given the price? The blackened chicken and tilapia were tasty, and the homemade bread was crusty and good. The chocolate cake for dessert seemed homemade, but not sure. The regularly priced entrees range between $17 and 28, so we figured we came out fine. Parents with kids note there is a special child's menu. We'd give Road House a modest recommendation, but then our comments are based on only one dining experience. read more

We found The Roadhouse while looking for nearby Joe's Country Cooking - which was closed. What a find - it was great! I had the turkey "sandwich" - really just a bunch of luscious slices of turkey piled on a slice of homemade bread. It was some of the most delicious turkey I've ever had. If I'm back here around Thanksgiving, I will come to The Roadhouse! My turkey came with delicious homemade cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, and broccoli - all perfect. My wife had Eggs Benedict, my daughter had the spinach omelette- also great. Service was friendly and prompt, as well as clear and informative. The atmosphere was homey (maybe a tad kitschy), welcoming, and clean. If you were in Texas and went to a place called "The Roadhouse," chances are it wouldn't look like this, but, hey, it's Vermont. read more

I loved the charming atmosphere of an old classic restaurant of my youth. I totally appreciated a mature staff. We were there on a holiday evening with a large party and I can understand that any restaurant may struggle handling either, yet alone the combo. The restaurant staff certainly met the challenge with out breaking sweat. Well, not until the bill... I really don't understand why a couple can get a bill for dinner for two with no issue, but when several families eat together there is an issue with restaurants providing separate bills or at least separate credit card payments... Anyway, my dinner was quite good, others at the table had variable reviews of their meals, but mostly positive. One upsetting thing was that the bill showed premium liquor calls when lower priced liquor was ordered. I think that the whole billing left a bad taste in much of our party's mouths... Stumbled upon this place after another place closeby had a substantial wait for breakfast. There was a "Sunday Brunch" sign, so we stopped in. We were seated immediately, and both of us ordered the tomato and cheddar omelet. Ordering an unfamiliar omelet can be a gamble, but this one paid off. It was piping hot, eggs were extremely fluffy, and the cheese was plentiful, gooey, and tasted so fresh. The English muffins were also delicious, and might have been homemade. While the food was actually pretty good, the service was too terrible to allow us to appreciate any of it. Literally the worst I've ever experienced. We had a reservation for a party of 18 people and they had to break us up into two tables. Our waitress was an elderly woman who was clearly overwhelmed by a table of ten given that the restaurant doesn't even have bus boys. Everything took forever, including the drink orders. We waited 45 minutes to get a bottle of wine, which ended up being a Malbec, not the cab that we ordered. The appetizers took another 30 min (so hour and 15 min after being seated) and the main entrees came out 30 min later, all of which were either luke warm or cold. Some were sent back because they were cold and just unappetizing at that point or people were full on bread and wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. The other table we were split up from had already paid the check before our entrees came out and went to the bar to wait for us. It was truly an unbelievable experience. Even though our waitress was terrible at her job, disappeared for long periods of time, knew nothing about the menu or wine list, and talked back to us if we reminded her about anything or were anything but overly polite (which we were most of the time because we actually felt bad that the restaurant would put this woman who was clearly struggling on a large table), it was so ridiculous that you had to blame the restaurant's management. I don't know how they didn't realize that something was wrong. Our entrees were clearly sitting there quite a while before they were brought over us, how did no one notice that? Or the fact that a table that we came in with and had 2 less people finished with everything an hour before us. Like come on. You're serving $26-$40 seafood entrees, not burger and fries. Completely unacceptable for any business. The experience completely ruined everyone's night. Some people even got into huge arguments over what tip to leave. We ended up leaving 20%, but unanimously felt something much lower if anything at all was deserved. Just bad. Go somewhere else or buy a frozen pizza. Seriously. read more

Over an hour after our party having been seated, we finally started receiving our food despite having ordered the childrens' dishes on arrival to expedite the process. The server had been missing in action throughout the interlude, leading us to assume that she was avoiding us. When we finally inquired her about the delay, she freaked out about the crowds. We then spoke to the manager, who insinuated that the delay was our fault - the size of our party and complexity of our order, which included such "custom" dishes as three orders of the prime rib daily special. As if it weren't enough, she returned after an interlude to aggressively confront us again! To top it off, the food was mediocre. The prime rib, for instance, was tasteless - not promising since it was advertised as their pride and joy. Stay away if you want a pleasant experience. Awful! We have been here many times and it's Always been decent. We tried the Wednesday night special deal- 2 lite nite meals with sangria- never again! My kids split a sirloin and that was eatable but charred heavily which deterred them from finishing their meal. my husbands and mine were sent back twice. Haddock first round was overcooked and second was fishy (smell & taste) and still was overcooked. My husband had shoe leather- the pork was a hockey puck at first round and second attempt was not much better and cold. Sangria was watery, contained no fruit and I did not drink it. Owner/chef took off very little and waitress warned us that "it wouldn't be pretty" If we requested to take this up with him. If Inedible Fishy fish & hockey pucks are your idea of fine dining- go for it- if not, BEWARE! read more

My husband & I came up from NYC to enjoy the fall foliage with our friend. We were starving, but there was a shortage of places to eat in the area, so we decided on Road House since it was right off the highway. The parking lot was full so we decided it must be a safe bet. I asked about the wait time, & was told about 45 minutes. After over an hour we saw a couple leave the "bar", so we decided to sit &order food, as we had seen the previous people eating there. We waited another 10 minutes for the bartender, who was very pleasant to many already seated; not with us. He barely made eye contact when he asked for our order. We asked if it was OK to have food served @ the bar since we'd been waiting so long. "Three of you?" long pause "I guess." At this point I was getting irritated; I'm used to cranky service people-I live in Queens-but this guy had been super friendly with everyone else. I had to be talked out of leaving by the guys, at which point our name was finally called for a table, so we went. When we sat, our elderly waitress brought menus, & then disappeared; the hostess had to give us the specials (she was very nice). In their defense, it was VERY busy, so I will leave the slowness of the service out of the equation. However, I can't forget how the waitress zipped past us several times without acknowledgment, no eye contact...nothing. We'd been sitting a while when my husband needed a refill of water, & with no sight of anyone, I got a pitcher of water from the servers table & poured the drinks myself. We glanced @ the menu, glance being the operative word; it was very short & offered few options (pricey, too). Finally the waitress came & we ordered burgers. My husband asked if he could substitute the coleslaw side with something else. She looked @ him like he was speaking a foreign language & said no. Not no, I'm sorry; just no. We then began what our 30-45 minute wait for our "food." Meanwhile our friend was served his "salad." I didn't know you could slice up a tomato, put it on a piece of lettuce, & serve that as a salad. Not exaggerating. It was literally a medium sized tomato, cut into slices, on a piece of iceburg lettuce. Now, the menu said the steak came with a "tomato salad," so I guess we were the crazy to assume that would be lots of lettuce with a healthy dose of tomatoes & dressing of some kind. Our mistake. That wasn't the worst of it; when our burgers came, the patty was so large the bun could barely contain it. Great right? That means they're not skimping on the meat, right? Normally I would agree, except it tasted like it was been cooked in a kiln. As I was starving I was determined to choke that thing down. But I failed, even after I asked for some ketchup to drown it in. All the water in the world couldn't get that burger dislodged from my esophagus, & my jaw actually threatened to seize up from the effort it took to chew. I finally gave up. I will say the coleslaw was pretty good; too bad my husband hates it & I couldn't finish mine as I was busy looking up a local hospital to treat the lock jaw. For the first time in my life I thought about sending food back, but I figured by the time I got it I would have fallen into a coma from low blood sugar. While this was going on, we noticed that the table next to us wasn't eating. The whole time we waited for our food, I thought "Man, no wonder we were waiting for a table for so long; this family is taking forever to leave." But actually they were waiting for their food. They had been sitting for a while before we even sat down to our table (I know this because grandma already had a few empty martini glasses in front of her). Finally our waitress came over to them & apologized very earnestly for the wait & told them their food was up next. Later I saw the waitress give that family their check & told them she had taken off some of the drinks to make up for the wait. Great, I thought, maybe we'll get the same deal, as we had waited a while too. No such luck. In the end, we debated about not tipping, but we just couldn't do it. I opted for 10% & still felt guilty. I thought about explaining to the waitress that although the food was awful, I didn't blame her for that. I blamed her for not smiling or looking us in the eye or acknowledging a request for dressing or a side substitute. I blamed her for treating everyone around us with solicitude, but acting as if we were a charity case & she was Mrs. Scrooge. But I thought better of it; if she hasn't learned that a pleasant attitude makes up for bad food & a busy night, she never will. All in all, this was one of the worst dining experiences ever. The people were unfriendly, the food was awful, there wasn't a lot to choose from, the prices were high for the fare offered, & the atmosphere was provincial. My husband ordered the pork chops they came out raw. He sent them back they came out under done a second time. He refused to eat them they would not take them off the bill. We've been coming to the Roadhouse for years. Good, dependable food, and lots of it. They've introduced a "Lite" menu, but their classic includes thick, hearty bread with a huge slab of butter, choice of soups, salad, entree with sides, and then a modest-sized dessert. Even as someone who often over-stuffs, there are times I can't finish everything. I don't drink but people I'm with enjoy their wine and beer selection. They have live (but quiet) music on Friday nights in the bar. Lots of James Taylor. There are seats nearby and at the far end of the restaurant, out of earshot, for those who prefer no music. This was the worst service I have ever received in a restaurant, so bad that I have never made a complaint like this before but I knew that I had to do this.. The waitress was so rude to me, coughing all over the place and all over her hands and it was gross. When we received our food, one meal was not cooked and mine was over cooked. The vegetables were cold as well and when I was asked about the food I answered honestly. The waitress went on a tear and was up in arms that I wanted a different meal. She walked about ten feet from me and started calling me a "kid" (I am 27), and saying how it was so rude of me to not like the food. I was trying not to listen but my mother was in shock on the waitress berating me only ten feet away. She then told another waitress about the same thing 15 minutes later. Needless to say I was too sketched out to eat the next meal that they gave me. Awful. Terrible service, long wait time to be sat even though they were close to empty, food was cold, and we were charged extra for something we didn't even ask for. We were also told we could not split the check (I work in food service, I use the same POS that they do, I could have shown them how to do it), and when I asked to speak to the manager, I was told that all I could do was speak to my server about it.
