Have been several times across the years and the meals have always always been delicious; tried the Chicken Vesuvio last night; perfection, as was the unoaked Chardonnay. My two companions enjoyed their meals also - but our waiter was awful. We barely had our coats off when he accosted us to take a drink order - seriously giving us no time to even look at a menu. After his third pounce within 15 minutes, we ordered and he was hawking appetizers, which we declined, saying, "Good - leaves room for dessert." This was an early Wednesday evening in an uncrowded restaurant and we three old friends were attempting to relax over our wine before ordering, yet his constant intrusion pretty well destroyed that. Come time for the check, I requested separate checks and he stared at me (so shoot me for not requesting them earlier) and reluctantly acquiesced. My bill was okay but another was incorrect as he had not given my friend the wine she ordered but one priced higher, leading to her questioning it. And he argued with her!!! We submitted our credit cards and once they were returned, we proceeded to give him less of a tip than the suggested 18%. As he was leaving the table, he looked back at my friend and glared at her. Actually looked back and glared at her as he was walking away, opening the folders and looking at his tip. Were I a restaurant owner - even of a street vendor, Mario would never be working in my establishment. You know, this used to be the best spot for a pizza to bring home to the family when the kids were young (thin pizza, sausage, it was great!) but now they seem more interested in building parking lots & raising prices -- frankly, I can't afford them and I think there parking lots are making that area look crumby. read more

I can't believe the game they play with their pizza. I ordered a sausage, onion green pepper and mushroom pizza. It's so petty for them to actually screw the customers out of. Sausage on the edge and a few tiny pieces of sausage in the middle. Peel back ur cheese and see for yourself. I pictured it below. They'll say it's precooked sausage in the middle otherwise it will stay raw. It's a lie. That doesn't explain why there's practically no sausage in the middle pieces. And it doesn't explain the effort to use 2 different types of sausage. The pizza maker can just apply smaller chunks of sausage toward the middle so that it cooks through. Pasquale is a gentleman. My only complaint is our server, Nick was hands down horrible but not their issue. He's a little off. I don't think h s a good server. He was very , very slow and not confident in his presence. Wasn't sure about wines and food. Wasn't personable either. We've had other servers that were opposite. I am definitely a fan--but--I hear and have experienced some aspects expressed in negative reviews regarding service. I do LOVE the atmosphere though--very warm, inviting, and comforting and, to me, an essential component of this authentic feeling ristorante raffinato. The physical building is a part of that in this small-scale downtown with its quaint corner-tower entry and where you're immediately greeted by an inviting bar (Google Maps gives you a great walk-in perspective). I do love coming here because you are treated as a welcome guest the vast majority of the time. I have never had a sub-par meal. However, there are times where wait staff, to drive it home, cop an attitude. Though it does not happen often, when it does, and in front of guests you brought here based on your rave reviews, it's a real good will killer. I'm relatively new to town and over the dozen or so times we've eaten here it's been really well done. Food and service are top notch. Drinks are nice and stout and the seating still retains that old fashioned spacing so you don't feel crowded and I'm told it's not different during the pandemic. However after more recent visits and a couple take out orders, we have decided not patron here any more. The location is great and the restaurant is clean and nice, and almost always very busy. I went there tonight with a girlfriend and our kids. I had a delicious eggplant parmigiana. The restaurant tables were too close together. A waiter came by and accidentally dropped a tray full of martinis onto my lap. I was completely soaked. I was good natured about it. Things happen. However, I was surprised when I still received a full bill for my meal. I had to ask for some type of compensation and then, the manager only offered my meal off and wine. We had our son's and daughter-in-law's rehearsal dinner here. My wife wanted Roberto's to be the venue, as she grew up in Elmhurst and it was a lifelong favorite. EVERYTHING was perfect; the food, the ambiance, the way everyone was treated. We had 35 people and when I got up to speak, they turned down the music (which was not really loud and didn't make talking to each other difficult to begin with) so I didn't have to strain to be heard. I'm from the New York area, and didn't warm up to the Chicago variations of food here such as Chicago tavern style pizza or Italian Beef UNTIL I had them at Roberto's. All the food we've ever had there has been great. It's unusual to have calamari for 35 people and it was all cooked perfectly; it's hard not to get some overcooked. Chicken parmigiana is not something I normally order for my meal, but it was cooked just right; juicy but thoroughly cooked. On a busy night, with the restaurant packed and take out orders being picked up constantly, it was amazing how they responded to everyone, kept glasses full, etc. For a party that big, their pricing was very reasonable for that area of Chicago-land, especially considering the excellent food and service. read more

Don't get the negative reviews. Had a great dinner. Both soups (Minestrone and pasta fagioli) were great. My friend took home a quart of the pasta fagioli. The service was very attentive and focused. Had the veal saltimbocca and sweat breads for entrees- both excellent. And we had a wonderful Brunello from the end of bin list at a really solid price. Can't wait to go back. Went back last night with friends. Great outdoor dining under a canopy with a view of a park (instead of the now common parking lot). Servers were all wearing masks and hostess stand was outside so never had to enter the building. Tables were well spaced. Looking in the windows the tables looked really well spaced (more than 6ft, maybe 10). Had the veal again and it was delicious. Friends had pasta/gnocchi with bolognese sauce and loved it. The vegetable lasagna was huge and delicious. And another friend had salmon and asked for adding pasta which was no problem. Deserts were tiramisu and a 7 layer chocolate cake. OMG!!! What's up with the prices? My wife thought that she was given the catering menu. Three sea scallops for $34.95. How can they ask $56.00 for a filet? Do they think that they are Mortons? First off, I understand Covid times, I do! Anyways, yesterday, mother's day, we had reservations for 4 at 6:30pm. We get there early. We finally get seated around 6:50. No biggie. I caught wind that they teamed with Open table and somehow overbooked!!! Shit happens, again it happens, BUT atleast let the people know that it may take longer then normal! We sit down(6:45), get our drink orders in...1 lemonade, 2 pepsi, 1 bottle of wine, and order apps...no clue, no clue(wife and mother in law ordered them), about 7, we order our meals....2 spaghetti and meatballs, and 2 other easy meals, nothing major. 7:15 we ask for our apps. 8:20pm we are still waiting for our food. You think a manager, our server, someone would come to the table? Naw!! Mother in law goes and says something. The girl at the desk tells us "we only have 2 cooks"! AND??? You think a manager would come and ask if everything is alright? Ask if there is anything they can do? Naw!! Food finally shows at 8:30. Spaghetti is fine, but my wife's and mother in laws is room temp and can tell that it's been sitting under a heat lamp. The plate was hot as fuck, food, not so much! Again, we aren't looking for money off, or anything, jsut someone to come over and ask if there is anything they can do! Then that little server wants to cop and attitude with my wife! Slams a plate and fork in her face! As soon as you say "what the fucks your problem" they seem to walk away and come back all happy! Get our check and what not, took another 20 mins to get check and to go boxes! Long story short, they lost a few returning customers that spend decent money! I used to LOVE Roberto's. I am hoping this was just a one-time bad experience. I went there for a meeting with two other women. Not sure if this is a change due to COVID, but we were not offered any bread and did not get any sides with our meal. In past visits, we never had to ask for bread. Also, our dinner used to come with a salad. This time - nothing. They were not even offered to us. I saw other people get bread, so I don't know why it was not offered. After dinner, I told the waiter I get a free dessert through the rewards program because it was my birthday. He made me actually feel sorry I mentioned it. Even asked me how I was able to sign up! I did get my free dessert, but he was not happy about it. Then one of the women made the mistake of asking for separate checks. Wow!! That set him off. Told us we should have asked for it in the beginning. (This was before he brought us the check.) Came back with our checks and threw them at us! I understand some restaurants are low on staff, but that was no reason to be so rude. Since this is the first bad experience I had, I will be back, but will not let that waiter serve me again! Great food for quick takeout. They are speedy and easy to communicate with. This is a neighborhood spot just steps from my house so I've grown accustomed to ordering their pizza and using our coupon to get a 6-pack of root beer free! We ordered a vodka pasta (good size for three regular portion size eater), the bruschetta (decent), and their grilled calamari (all time favorite of theirs). Total for pick up was $38. Not bad for all the food we got! I don't even understand how this place can be so incompetent. I ordered pizza and wings at 5:24 PM and at 7:00 PM still no order so I called to check. The rude person answering the phone said "On the way". At 7:40 PM I called back to find out what was going on to which I got "It was delivered". I confirmed address and assured them it was not delivered. I waited on hold and then I was told "We delivered to the wrong house" (to which I have a lot of questions). So I asked for a refund and I asked for them to confirm the amount. I was told an amount less than the charge. I said that is not the correct amount and then she came back with the correct number. Tried Roberto's for lunch today & was disappointed. The only reason they aren't getting 1 star is because the food was very good & their outdoor patio area is quite nice. My coworkers & I stepped inside & apparently the only server working the lunch shift was standing at a computer across the bar area entering an order - we stood there for several minutes without so much as a glance up to greet us or say "I'll be right with you." We are seated on the patio & look over the menu, wondering what the daily specials are since there are 3 different items on the menu which are "of the day" (Soup, Risotto & the Panini). The server comes back with our beverages & asked if we are ready to order. My coworker says no & asked what the Panini of the Day is. The server states what it is and starts to walk away. "No, wait, what about the Risotto of the Day?" I didn't bother to stop her a third time to ask what the Soup of the Day was. Geesh. It's not like they were slammed busy, either. It was our group of 4 and 2 other couples in the whole place. I guess they only have pizza for dinner because there wasn't any pizza on the lunch menus we were given. My coworkers each ordered the ravioli and I had the vegetable lasagna. In comparison to other Italian restaurants we should have received double the amount of food for the price. $11 for 5 raviolis? All of us cleaned our plates & this is a group that normally takes half their food home. The lunches don't come with a small salad or soup, either - just a basket of bread & garlic butter (which was good). They have a different dinner menu so I'm sure the portions are larger then.
