I can't say enough about how fantastic the food was. The steak was cooked to perfection and the salad was incredible--truly a culinary highlight. But unfortunately, the service was such a disappointment that it overshadowed the entire experience. Once seated, we ordered steak, but were not given any silverware. I had to flag down our server to ask for utensils--twice, once for me and once for my fiancée's salad. Still, nothing. I ended up grabbing silverware and napkins from a nearby table myself. To make things worse, no one checked in to refill our water or see if we needed anything else. After being completely ignored, I finally confronted the server. He was apologetic and comped our $2 water--appreciated, but far from enough to make up for the experience. For a restaurant that claims to be the best French establishment in Boston, the lack of care was shocking. The French are known for excellence in food and hospitality--demanding excellence, actually. Interesting French cuisine restaurant in Boston Back Bay. Beautiful dining room on second floor, with trendy bar cafe lounge on the first floor. Service is excellent and attentive. Great touch for complimentary champagne and chocolate cookie vanilla ice cream dessert for anniversary celebration dinner. Main entrees are excellent. Crispy duck breast $44 is fatty, amazingly tender, and nicely balanced with spring barley, plum sauce and honey. Steak frites $37 are very good. NY strip steak comes in the most tender lean strip steak, with super crispy salted fries. Endless fries give options for free second serving of delicious crispy string fries, albeit busting the daily sodium intake several times over. French onion soup $17 is very good, with generous amount of Gruyère, but small bowl could do better with more generous serving of delicious oxtail soup. Desserts are not typical French delight to expect in France. Hot plate chocolate cookie with vanilla bean ice cream was yummy, but several tads too sweet. The Swan $12 comes as a vanilla ice cream (ok, could have stronger vanilla taste) wrapped with cream puff (no fresh bake taste) glazed in chocolate sauce. This review of Rochambeau is only for their steak room. They have an amazing deal for steak frites where you get skirt steak, bread, greens and unlimited fries for $36 a person. We came on Wednesday night and had no issues getting a reservation just two days prior. While the claim to fame of the steak room is their steak frites meal, they also have a few items you can order like steak tartare and french onion soup. They also have an extensive wine list that is available. We each ordered the steak frites meal which starts off with a bowl of dressed lettuce for each person and then a single baguette for the table. You can ask for additional bread for no additional cost. The second course was a 6 ounce skirt steak with a small portion of fries. I ordered my steak rare and it came out closer to medium rare but it wasn't a large enough deal to send back. The steak comes with a very delicious steak sauce drizzled on top and a separate cup for dipping your fries into. The y came around about 10 minutes later with extra fries. They were very very generous with the secondary portion of fries. Note that if you are interested, the $36 includes a secondary portion of steak (3 ounces). I got the French omelette with veggies onions, mushrooms broccoli tomatoes- came with brunch potatoes that were so good crunchy on the outside and soft inside, very tasty. I've been to Rochambeau a few times to get drinks at the bar, and it was my first time eating there! I've always seen their steak room deal, which is about $36 for an 8 ounce steak, unlimited fries, a salad, and a baguette. It's a great deal because you definitely won't be hungry after. The steak was surprisingly cooked very well for a strip steak. Great sear, great flavor. Fries are solid, salad is nothing special, just lettuce. The best thing about this restaurant is the ambiance and the service. Sitting at the bar, we got to talk to some of the bartenders and they're always so accommodating! Sometimes, I just tell them what kind of ingredients I like and they create something based off of that. It's also so beautiful inside and located conveniently at the Prudential Center. Would definitely come back. The beautiful decor alone makes it a unique place where I want to just hang out and look at the plants and design. Service was good when I went, and the host (shoulder length hair with dangly earrings) was exceptionally nice. He even went to get an umbrella to walk me to Eataly in the Prudential next door when it was pouring rain. While the charming classic French bistro chairs outside and sign drew me in, I was skeptical at first because some signs and menu items made it seem more American and not really true French... this is true but I like that they do it in a cheeky way. Also, $5 for baguette?!? Other French places serve this for free, though I have noticed more restaurants in general charging for bread. I wouldn't want to pay for it every time, but I was hungry and the piping hot semi baguette served in a paper sleeve with cornichons & butter that instantly melted really hit the spot as an appetizer. I was also curious and a little wary of the oxtail twist on what otherwise looked like a classic French onion soup with cheese gorgeously melted on top and spilling over the sides. When I first tried just the soup, it indeed tasted like oxtail soup (in a good way) and was quite oily on top (not in a good way). I did not notice any bits of meat but I did pull out a very thin bone. Anyway, after the first 3 sips of soup to prevent it from spilling while I pushed cheese in to mix it with soup and onion, the rest tasted delightfully like other excellent French onion soups. Btw if anyone has figured out the secret to gracefully eating French onion soup (including all the cheesy goodness that pulls into longer strings than pizza), please do let me know! read more

I have visited Rochambeau a few times and I always have a good experience. My most recent visit was for brunch. We went around 1 in the afternoon so it wasn't super crowded and was seated on the second floor. Everything on their brunch menu sounded delicious but we ended up with the steak and eggs, duck confit hash, and crab cakes to share. Steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare. Duck confit hash was everything I had hoped it to be. The crab cakes were interesting, I've never had crab cakes with green apples before, it gave it texture and acidy, but it wouldn't be my first choice next time. We had some cocktails and very much enjoyed the ambiance. My most memorable dishes during my dinner visits would include steak tartare, escargot, wood grilled sirloin, and crispy duck breast. Came by for a nice dinner last weekend - we had a reservation, and the two of us were seated as soon as we came in. A warning, though - the group next to us at the front of house - also a party of 2, but without a reservation - was told that they were fully booked until 9pm (!) so do make a reservation. We started with a steak tartare to share. The tartare itself was a little bit too oily n my opinion but otherwise quite , but when eaten with the bread it paired quite well. (Sourdough bread was actually soo good - super fragrant and we could smell how fresh it was as soon as it was served. The parmesan on top was a little odd, in my opinion. It was (presumably) melted and resolidified into what was basically a cracker or a crisp; kind of difficult to eat since it was too hard and brittle, and it was a bit messy trying to eat it with the steak. I had the grilled Hampshire pork loin - such a great choice! The pork was perfectly cooked (roughly medium rare), so it was tender and not at all too chewy (as can sometimes be the case with pork). I loved the accompanying spätzle and sauerkraut (technically choucroute garnie as named on the menu) - very tasty in and of itself, and complemented the flavour of the pork very well. We also ordered the proscuitto wrapped cod, which was definitely an interesting (creative?) choice. The cod was tender and flavourful, but much of the plate was overpowered by the heavy aroma of the veloute. Clams and potatoes were nice additions and paired nicely with the fish. The biggest issue for us was that the ambience - music in particular - was way too loud; we were leaning over the table and practically yelling to hear each other from just a few feet away. All in all, a bit pricey (although expectedly so, and certainly worth it), so probably best to save for a special occasion - but I think I will certainly be back! :) read more

I had always seen this place when visiting the Prudential Center but went in for the first time for weekend brunch. They took us up to their second floor, which had a lovely airy and French vibe, with high ceilings and plenty of booths. The server greeted us with an extremely welcoming attitude and made us feel right at home. Since this is a French place, I decided to try the Croque Monsieur, which was a pretty hefty sandwich with cheese, ham, and topped with an egg. It also came with a side of really yummy fries. Coming for brunch with a group of 12 was no small ask! However, we were shocked by the lack of quality service for a place that has 4 $ signs. The food was excellent. The mimosas seemed to be fresh squeezed and tasty. However, when one person from our party asked for another drink the server said "oh no you won't like that it's not sweet" making an assumption. Turns out, she loved the drink. Additionally, our party asked for coffee. While, they did pour for everyone, we waited 7-10 minutes before having to ask for cream and sugar. There was no proactivity. Great ambiance and nice bartenders. However, for $19 a pop, I would expect the cocktails to be freshly made in front of the customer. On a previous occasion, a bartender simply poured a premade cocktail with a hand-written label into a shaker in front of me and then poured it into a glass. On my last visit, another bartender took an order for cocktails, disappeared to the back, returned with a plastic kitchen container filled with liquid, disappeared again, and soon served those cocktails to us. We never saw the bartender touch any bottles in the bar area or mix any drinks there. All of this happened on a quiet Sunday afternoon. First of all our waiter, Nico, was outstanding! Secondly the support staff was amazing as well as they cleared dishes and make sure our water was filled on a consistent basis! Food wise the gnocchi, the baguette, and the greens salad was very good . In fact the gnocchi was the best we had ever had! It had a great crust on the outside but was light and fluffy on the inside! So good with the lobster sauce! I had the steak fruits prefix menu. The fries were good the steak was hit or miss throughout for me due to some of the over chard from the grill. It was a detractor from the flavor for me. My wife had the short rib burgeon. She said the flavors were great however there was a root vegetable that was not listed on the menu that was undercooked and mixed into her mashed potatoes which ruined the texture for her. The cocktails were great and the wine that we chose to go with our meal was tasty as well. Unfortunately the biggest letdown for us was the crème brûlée for dessert. I did ask for the berries to be put on the side, which they were, due to the fact that berries on top ruins the sugar crust that should be on a crème brûlée (in my opinion). But when the crème brûlée came out it was covered in what seemed to be ready whip (this was not listed on the menu); that completely ruined the sugar crust on top. The crust was completely soggy. The next issue we had with it was that the custard was broken. It either had been cooked too quickly or cooked too long or overheated. Finally, we were initially impressed that it was not in a vessel of any type until we realized it was on a sugar cookie. The sugar cookie was not listed anywhere on the menu either. So if you are trying to be gluten-free this is not a good option for you. Unfortunately, the sugar cookie added a graininess to the custard when eaten together. The sugar cookie by itself was good.
