An appointment is required to talk about cabinetry and get some estimates. I met with Marnie, and she was fantastic. I had Opinions on what I did and did not want and she seemed pleased with that and that I had actually done the research on the cabinetry options she'd sent, so I came in knowing precisely which ones I wanted. It definitely made the appointment go more quickly since I already knew which door styles and colors I was interested in. She talked with me about some of the technical aspects (e.g., framed vs. frameless vanities, top mount vs. under mount sinks, etc.) and they had various examples on display. They also had most of the door styles to have a better idea of what they'd look like. For the bathroom in which the vanity would be installed, the options here were more than we wanted to spend. I'd like to consider an update for the main bathroom, though, and would look to AKB for that job. The companies they work with have really beautiful products. Honestly, it makes me want to do more remodeling (main bathroom! Kitchen!) because wandering around the showroom made me want everything! I'm probably not quite that much of a masochist given the construction that would entail, but....

That, along with a few other cautions, set our expectations before starting our project with Kitchen & Baths Unlimited. For my wife and me, however, the experience turned out very differently. We cannot say enough great things about Nancy (design), Owen (project management) and the entire team that meticulously executed the remodel. While I work from home and my wife commutes downtown, we decided to move forward with gutting and remodeling the vintage kitchen in our 100-year-old farmhouse in Evanston--and we couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Yes, the demolition phase was a bit loud, as expected. But after that, the usual construction noise--hammering and drilling--was manageable. The team did an excellent job minimizing disruption: adjacent rooms were carefully sealed to contain dust, wood floors were protected with panels, and window treatments were wrapped in plastic. Design selections were also made easy thanks to Nancy, who guided us through choosing colors, cabinets, and countertops that matched our vision. The result is a beautiful transformation from a neglected, dingy farmhouse kitchen into a bright, modern farmhouse space. The Italian tile backsplash complements the quartz countertops with subtle veining. The lower cabinets are a soft gray, while the upper cabinets are white, creating a clean and balanced look. We also upgraded our appliances and fixtures, including LED ceiling lights, a Bosch microwave drawer, a professional KitchenAid range with a matching hood featuring an infrared sensor, and a modern stainless-steel farmhouse sink with a gentle bow. Despite an initial delay with the permit office due to a previously applied for permit that KBU helped us manage, the project stayed on schedule. We made a few minor upgrades along the way, but thanks to Owen and Nancy's guidance, we remained on time and within our overall budget. The KBU crew was professional, punctual, and highly skilled. Communication was seamless--especially since I was working from home--which helped address questions quickly and keep the project moving efficiently. Dejan was the first person to respond (7 minutes after I sent the initial message - talk about responsive!!!) I can confidently say that DK Stone's prices are the best in the market after comparing them amongst the other 4 competitors. The best part is that everyone else had told me that I would need to buy at least 2 slabs for the dimensions of our countertop. I asked Dejan how many slabs we would need and he said ONE SLAB for both island countertop and stovetop countertop!! He was able to calculate a configuration that would get everything done with minimal waste - this was huge in terms of cost. He had his guys come out to measure 5 days later and the counter tops were installed a couple of weeks after that. Everything was perfect, they were so efficient. Okay so now you have an idea of their work but what about service? Someone had accidentally taken our garbage disposal ring when they were cleaning up after the job so we couldn't get the disposal installed - we reached out to Dejan and he had someone drop it off. He could have easily ghosted us since the job was done but he was still just as responsive. We seriously cannot recommend DK Stone enough - we are so impressed and after being let down by so many other companies this was the breath of fresh air we needed.

Some helpful hints based on our experience: 1. A big countertop dealer like MSI, located in Elk Grove Village, has a very large showroom where you can see the full countertop slabs. We had some preferences based on the web site pictures and the little quartz samples, but ended up selecting a different slab once we were in the showroom. You really want to see the full countertop slabs before your decision is finalized. 2. We were really disappointed with the Home Depot service, which is The Countertop Factory - Midwest. There was an extremely hard sell visit to our house and a take-it-or-leave it price. 3. Many quartz countertop installation services want you to select quartz they already have in stock. Davan let us shop around and we selected an MSI countetop, which MSI already had in stock. Our job therefore proceeded quickly from final slab selection to installation (less than two weeks). 4. I was unnecessarily nervous about our kitchen tile backsplash when our old formica countertops were replaced with new quartz countertops. We wanted to retain the old kitchen backsplash. That was not a problem and the installation occurred smoothly.

When I went out to look at the granite and quartz in Davan's warehouse, they were inviting, accommodating and helpful. Jay took so much time with me and our very unique piece to make sure everything was just right. Anna, was responsive with scheduling and I was impressed at every step. The installers were prompt, clean and careful. I ended up with quartz as a replacement because I loved the piece that Jay helped me find. The way we carved out the piece used all of the beautiful veining in the quartz and we are so happy. I cannot recommend Davan enough. I will be back when we do our master bath!

Custom Marble Design, however, were the first to respond and went above and beyond in their customer service, execution, and workmanship. As soon as they received my inquiry, they extended an invite to visit their location and shop thru available remnants. When I arrived, I was personally escorted around the premises and shown a variety of options (multiple stone types and color variations.) I had lots of questions-- all of which were answered thoroughly and kindly. Even though I arrived about 30 minutes before closing time (I received their invite while I was running errands & headed straight over), I never felt rushed or dismissed. My "little project" was treated with the utmost care & respect. This location also offered me a flat rate price for the project, so there were no hidden fees or complications regarding the stone I selected or my finishing parameters. I officially placed my order (stone selection and project specs) on Tuesday and was shocked to learn that it was ready for pick up that Friday. I just picked up the finished stonework today & could not be more pleased with the results! The order was completed to my exact specifications & finished with care. When I told them that I'd carry the piece to my car they insisted on taking it out for me. Everyone I encountered at this business (in person & via email) was exceptionally attentive, professional, and kind. (Special thanks to Bojan & Jovan and their fabulous fabricators!)
