My husband and I visited Alexandria for a few nights while he was on a business trip. We had never been here before so on our way out to explore we stopped at Rock It Grill to have a cold beer and start our evening. Obviously a local hang out which is usually awesome because you have the opportunity to meet and hang out with the people that live there. This was not the case. On Friday early evening we walked in and all seats at the bar were full. Not a problem at all. There were a few tables at the side so I sat at a table and my husband stood at the bar. There were two bartenders dividing the bar. Our bartender (which was closest to the front door) looked at us 5-10 times never acknowledging us. After 5 or so minutes I stood up and joined my husband standing at the bar. This time she deliberately rolled her eyes at us. We looked at each other as if to make sure we really saw that happen. We spent a total of 17 minutes waiting to get served only to receive a cocktail of rolling eyes. Very nasty lady. Unfortunately I can't comment on the drinks because we never got any or food...again nada! Alexandria is such a fun friendly town don't waste your time stopping here. Fun Karaoke bar. The singers were better then average and the crowd was lively. The beer was cold and reasonable. There was a good selection of shots and the appetizers were delicious. We had the potato skins and sliders. The singing made for a great night of entertainment. read more

This dive bar has it all. From Karaoke, to food, and cheaper drinks than the city, and a warm "Cheers" sort of atmosphere. I had heard whisper of a bar names Rock It Grill, but had never had the chance to go there. Mind you, it was Christmas Eve and there were easily 30 people there! Lunch with a friend. Divey type of spot that you're surprised is open for lunch. Unfortunately for me I had just started to watch my intake so instead of gourging on burgers and fries I tried the tacos. One hard shell with ground beef the other soft taco with chicken. I asked, if possible, for a substitute of spinach instead of shredded iceberg. It wasn't possible. Basic chili powder on ground beef, chili powder on chicken and shredded cheddar. Went here on a "date" (wasn't really a date since I had just met the guy on the metro, haha what he was hot....) and it was cold out so this was the first place we came across on King St. There were people in here ranging from early 20s to early 100's it seemed. And it's a kareoke bar so of course no one could sing, except for the dj guy arranging the songs who would get all into it. My thought it is you have a dress and boobs, you will get hit on here. I went to Rock It Grill with the GF for our regular hour with a group of over 60 people. Rock It Grill is a "dive-ish" bar and grill on King St in Old Town about a 1/3 of a mile from King St. Metro. We'd been here several times in the past (also with large groups), so we had a very good idea of the good, the bad, and the ugly of the place. First, the Good... Karaoke. You either love it or you hate it. There's no in-between. Whether it's an ethnic pre-disposition or just my inner rock star trying to get out, I love karaoke. As a bar that does karaoke, Rock It Grill is a fun time on karaoke nights. The DJs do a good job keeping the karaoke moving and playing danceable music during the set breaks. The whole evening is an entertaining hot mess! Second, the Bad... Service. On this Friday night, the service was atrocious! Blame should go all around for this fiasco. Our server was overwhelmed, but I got the impression she would've been overwhelmed by a group of 6, let alone our group. She was not good a multi-tasking and seemed flustered the entire night. In her defense, her section was too large to be covered by just her and since the management didn't see fit to put more than 3 people on the floor to cover the entire room not seated at the bar (bartenders outnumbered servers 4 to 3), everyone other than those at the bar were likely getting very slow service. Third, the Ugly.... The food. Look, I wasn't expecting The French Laundry here. The Rock It Grill is what it is, a neighborhood dive bar and grill, like many I've experienced before. That said, no self-respecting bar and grill should slaughter the basics like the Rock It Grill did. If you serve fried food (and what place like this one doesn't?), then you need to heat the oil in the deep fryer to the appropriate temperature. Unfortunately, they didn't. Everything...our fries and jalapeno poppers came out soggy and greasy...YUCK! The GF and I split a blackened grill chicken sandwich. The bread was smothered with mayonnaise and the smallish chicken breast was coated in way over-salted spice coating which was light on spice except salt. All told, the food was poorly executed and not good. Sadly, this is more their norm than one off night. So...if you love karaoke and you're in Old Town, then Rock It Grill is the place to go. Stopped in for dinner and a few quick drinks on a rainy Monday night, we sat at the bar and were greeted immediately and given menus. Great happy hour pricing on cocktails and beers. Ordered the beer cheese and basket of fries as an app, AMAZING! The fries were hot and seasoned well and that beer cheese, they should sell it by the gallon! Since it was Monday we took advantage of the 1/2 priced sandwiches, ordering a Shrimp Po' Boy and the Philly. To say the portions were generous is an understatement! Nice amount of shrimp on the Po'Boy and the Philly was absolutely delicious! My beer was never empty, we were offered a last round at Happy Hour prices and cashed out in a timely manner. This was my second time here on a Saturday night. I came to flex the golden pipes with a little karaoke. I'm not a bragger, but I pretty much rocked it out! IJS! The crowd was lively and fun, the servers were attentive and friendly, but the food that I ordered lacked flavor and seasoning. I ordered the chicken fingers and fries and I wasn't impressed. I couldn't even finish it. According to my friends, the drinks were pretty weak and watered down. In order to be able to sing more than once during karaoke, you have to either know the dj or be a regular because several people were able to go up numerous amounts of times while others had to wait and wait for a chance to sing. The equipment the karaoke dj uses seems to be pretty nice. The atmosphere is a typical bar vibe. Pool tables in the back, bar to the left and tables and chairs all throughout. I most likely won't come back because of the amount of time to wait to sing, but it's a fairly decent place to visit if you're in the area. read more

The wife and I had an amazing time here on Saturday night for karaoke! It was date night and we were looking for a place for her to dance in Alexandria, which is surprisingly hard to find! Stumbled into the Rock It Grill around 10 pm, immediately signed up for karaoke and started making friends. A very diverse crowd in every sense of the word, great drink menu and while the staff was absolutely hosed with patrons, they never stopped moving and that's what I appreciates about them. Felt really welcome there and even though you could tell the staff was nearly overwhelmed, they weren't rude or overly short. Would definitely recommend and hope to go back again! read more

What could have been a great night with a nice crowd turned into a bit of a nightmare. I went to Rock It for a bit of karaoke and harp playing with a good friend, we are both around 60 and I'm a retired vet. The DJ there had issues with us signing up in his mind too many songs and after some discussion we were asked to leave. I should mention we were eating and drinking Diet Coke, no alcohol. I've never been so embarrassed. Not sure if they could tell I was military or what the real Issue was, but I would highly recommend finding another place. Appreciate the owner responding, glad she stated it wasn't personal. However grabbing a mike out of the hands of a customer who was playing with other customers invite to do a duo is not appropriate behavior. Becoming physical can easily turn serious. I recommend you get you DJ anger management classes to avoid any possible problems. I'll stay with calmer venues to enjoy my evenings. read more

This place is SO much fun! We like to come here when we're in Alexandria and it's always entertaining with the nightly karaoke. I personally love the dive-y down-to-earth vibe which is a refreshing change from all the trendy overpriced places in the DC area. My one warning is that you shouldn't come here expecting too much from the food beyond your typical bar fare that will satisfy when drunk, but the drinks are generous and tend to be pretty good. Best part (and reason to come here) is the nightly karaoke which ranges from every type of music imaginable and every level of talent, all while being a super supportive atmosphere. Rock it Grill is a fun little karaoke bar on the main strip of an otherwise pretty preppy section of Old Town Alexandria. RIG however, is anything but. It caters to people from all walks of life and is usually a great mix of people that are just out to have a good time. It's non-pretentiousness adds to it's charm and it's cheap drinks add to the party. Like most karaoke bars, you get some really great singers and some not so much. I'm a sing along from my seat type of girl, and they have a huge list of available songs, so I have been happy as a clam to do just that every time I have been. We went to Rock It Grill for a HH night with a group of 60+ people. I'll agree with pretty much everything Gregg M said about the good, bad and ugly, but going to add a few of my pet peeves. We've been here before - I know they can handle our group. Our one waitress whom I've never had before, but I've seen her every time we are there was incredibly rude. I understand busy, but don't be rude to me, to those I bring into the bar to anyone. I hate that. Pet peeve #2 - don't add a tip onto the bill when I'm only with my boyfriend on the bill AND I wasn't event sitting at a table. Its a sure way to not get a 20% tip from me. Though I agree that management did a poor job, there is absolutely no excuse for rudeness at any point. The food: I'm not sure if I've had worse food. It was horrible! I came here once on karaoke night and wasn't impressed. On the plus side, it wasn't hard to get on the list to sing, and there was a good mix of performers who were really good and performers who were so bad they were funny, but there were also too many who were not quite bad enough to be funny. As a bar/grill type place, it was terrible. Service was slow and not terribly friendly. The food was gross, and we were just eating standard bar options like buffalo chicken tenders and nachos, which aren't that hard to make. We LOVE this place. I've never been for a full meal, but have done bar snacks here and they were good. It's casual, priced right, and so relaxed compared to many bars in Old Town (and not gonna lie, I love the fancy pants places too, but nice to have this as an option/contrast!) Beer is cold and cheap, cocktails are strong, service has always been good and there is always a good crowd. They have karaoke nightly and some real talent that gets up and sings, in addition to your typical karaoke crowd (aka most of my friends!). I come in here fairly often at the beginning of happy hour. I typically get a beer and something to eat. The bartenders are always welcoming and are very attentive to making sure you have a refill. However, there is only one person in there during the day who has to run the bar and the dining section. So, if it randomly gets busy, the bartender is truly running around trying to take care of everyone. However, with that said, all of the bartenders have been able to handle it very well. Also, a few weeks back, I was in there and only got buffalo chicken tenders and the place was dead (maybe like 3 people at the bar). And it took over 25 minutes for them to get to me. The bartender apologized and gave me a discount on the food even though I didn't ask for it. She obviously knew 25 minutes to fry up a couple tenders was too long, so I appreciated the customer service. I have only been there for one drink or so when the karaoke starts. The place gets packed for karaoke, which is every night. I'm not the biggest fan of karaoke, but it is a karaoke bar, so I won't knock it just because it's not my taste. However, it always seems like people enjoy themselves during karaoke -- the customers really get into it! I will keep sneaking into this place at the beginning of happy hours and having my drink and something to eat. (I've never had anything bad to eat here; it's nothing amazing, but it is a step up from regular bar food.) As a pool player, they do have 2 pool tables in the back. However, they aren't regularly maintained and both tables do play slow and have "rolls" to them. I actually know some of the guys that go in there to shoot regularly. If they were to fix up the tables and maintain them (or get Diamond tables -- wishful thinking:)), then I probably would make this my regular spot. (I could deal with the karaoke if I was playing on some nice pool tables!) Overall, I would recommend this place! 4.5/5 stars. read more

I've been dying to try this place for the longest time and I'm so glad I finally got the chance to! My brother and I came in during lunch and were able to seat ourselves in the comfy booth in the window. I ordered 3 beef tacos and my brother got a hamburger. We were so happy with our orders, they were juicy and delicious! And such good prices too for such quality food! They've got Karaoke nights too, which I can't wait to come back and check out, it sounds awesome! And our server was great! :) I cant wait to come back again with more of my friends! read more

Can't really call this a neighbourhood bar when it seems like everyone in the joint was a traveler even on karaoke night. As such, we had a bunch of amateurs on the mike that the DJ looks like she's waiting for her night to mercifully end. I don't blame her but I was impressed that she rewarded my friend with another song when she deduced the girl actually had talent. As with travelers/tourists, they can get somewhat obnoxious. The bouncer had to break up a fight over karaoke criticism. Yeah... I stopped by this place for lunch since they have $2 tacos on Tuesday, which I highly recommend. My total bill was only $7.50 and it is rare to be able to have a meal under $10 these days. The server was very nice and attentive, and she always remembered to refill my drink. She actually forgot to put in my fries, but I got an order of them on the house once I reminded her. The food is very basic but you can't really complain for the price. The atmosphere is very casual and has an old-school feel. Was in the area and stopped by....Just because I could...and I wanted to try their "World Class Chili" or whatever the hype was for it. It's a typical bar, which is good and no doubt underrated. Has all the requisites: the long bar area, raised from the tabled seating area with pool tables in the back and a small stage off to the side near the entrance. I was here at 2:30 pm. I remember because I missed Happy Hour by a half-hour (damn!). I had the chili and a Rock-It beer. I grabbed a couple of their books of matches ( been awhile since I'd see anything like that). The Chili was OK. A bit watery and not thick like I like it. But the onions were sliced and a nice touch. The house beer was also just "OK".....and "A-OK" is a fair rating here. Maybe I expected more or felt like it had more to offer from the look of things but at the same time I was there during an off-peak period and just wanted something to eat and a beer. The bartender was cool though and that's always a plus. Update: came here recently (2017) and they have a bartender who looks like Michelle Obama. This place is absolutely terrible. Went there on a Saturday night for my brother in laws birthday. We arrived at 10:20 pm and the place was absolutely packed. Apparently it was Karaoke night. The first waitress who came over about 5 minutes after we sat down was rude and abrubt. The place was loud as hell and when I asked her to repeat herself she made a nasty face and started yelling. Another waitress saw our reaction and she came over and took our drink order. Once she arrived with our drinks we placed our food order. It was about 10:40. Over an hour went by and my husband asked her several times about our food and she kept saying it was coming, then around 12:00 she brought out my basket of fries and my friends mozzarella sticks and both were freaking igloos. ( freezing cold) . She then tells my husband that he won't be getting his food because the grill was already closed when he placed his order and she didnt realize what time it was. So then why did you keep telling him it was coming for over an hour? and why was the rest of our food freezing cold? She didn't even apologize! By that time our entire party was irritated and we left. This place was a joke the karaoke was terrible and they clearly have no management. At least not that we could find( we asked and no one ever came over) .I would recommend the Light Horse down the street. read more

We came up from Richmond on Amtrak for a 2 day birthday celebration. We walked a lot but twice ended up here our first day. Second day and after scouring Yelp and considering an over pricey place we were back. We sat outside and had a most awesome time. Good food, happen to walk in on half price burger day with purchase of a beverage. Terrible waitress, terrible grasp on the English language and surprising that the order came out without more issues than it did. My mother ordered a burger with no bun as she is gluten free. Burger arrived with the bun, no big deal as it can be removed. Waitress did not understand gluten free or what it was. My mother ordered a Cranberry juice and was told that beverage wasn't applicable for a half-price burger. Never saw anything that indicated that there were things that couldn't be ordered. She ended ordering a lemonade, which ended up being very sweet. My father and I both ordered ice tea and it was very good, tasted fresh brewed. I ordered the bacon and egg burger, substituted cheddar for the american cheese. Burger was good, not superb, but enough to make a meal. Egg was perfectly cooked, over easy with the yolk dripping out. Bacon was cooked well and provided a good taste with the egg and burger. Burger was ordered medium, came out more medium rare, but that's fine with me. Probably would have tried something on the menu had it not been half-price burger day, but we were in a rush and this was quick and got us in and out on time. I'd probably give this place another try. Looks like its a hoppin' bar in the evenings and that's when I would love to give it another try. Wow. We have never been treated so poorly upon entering an establishment of any kind until tonight. Came to old town specifically to visit this bar. When we entered with my registered service animal, the bartender screamed at us, "you can't bring that dog in here", we were in the process of showing her our documentation, when she said " we don't accept emotional support animals". When she realized our dog was a legitimate service animal she scowled and acted disgusted. We obviously opted not to stay after being treated so terribly. We would like the owner of this bar to know how unprofessional and rude his bartender was. On thanksgiving Saturday night nonetheless.
