This is an awesome gym! I had some free time between jobs on a Monday morning so I threw my shoes in the truck and stopped by here shortly after they opened for the day. The staff that checked me in were super nice, helpful, and gave me a quick tour and overview of the facilities. I absolutely love that you can top out and climb over the bouldering walls here - the upstairs wall even has a tube slide like at a playground to bring you back down! That was rad. It was pretty quiet when I was there but the few other climbers in the gym were all very friendly and respectful. Each RockSpot location website has a counter of how many climbers are in the gym which I thought was neat to give you a heads up of the capacity before making the drive over. The upstairs training facility had a number of hang boards, ample campus runs, and a number of other grip and pull up training devices. The grades felt a bit soft to me but quite frankly what do I know. The thing that impressed me the most about this facility was just how clean it was, especially compared to other gyms in the RI/MA region. I really like how there is a water fountain with a water bottle filler available for use. The bathrooms upstairs and downstairs were all very clean as well. With taller walls that you can top out on you definitely want good padding and the pads on the floor here were awesome. They all seemed in great shape, no tears, rips, stains, or soft spots and the same could be said for all of the holds on the wall. No spinners and no glassy worn out holds. While I was there I decided to just stick with bouldering problems but this facility has some very cool looking lead and top rope routes, and plenty of auto belays as well. I visited Rock Spot for the 1st time with a friend and we had a blast. It had been a while since I've been rock climbing so I was a bit nervous especially because I've never used an auto-belay. We were given a short introduction to the equipment (how to put it on, the different walls, how to use the auto-belay, etc). The instructor was really sweet, helpful and willing to take as much time as needed until we were comfortable with the equipment. Finding the place was a little confusing. Rock spot is an old treasure. I used to have a membership here. Easy to Rick climb solo because they have machines that will catch you if you fall and they have bouldering areas where you free climb with a big crash pad underneath. I rejoined with their 3 month special and the safety precautions make me so happy I did. They sell liquid chalk that doubles as hand sanitizer, they give you placards for the cubbies so they can clean them out routinely. Masks are required while climbing which makes it difficult to climb for a long time but I appreciate the precautions. I have my own gear so I did not have to rent so I'm unsure the safety measures they are taking there but have seen shoes sprayed with disinfectant in the past so I imagine they are doing that to the harnesses as well. read more

Wow! What a great spot for rock climbing! I purchased a Groupon and headed here with some co-workers. I'm a relative newby to rock climbing (only climbed once in the past at a festival that had a rock wall), but I'm definitely hooked. The staff here is great! Super helpful and knowledgeable. It helped that I was here with a friend who was certified in belaying, but there are still several walls you can climb on your own without having someone belay you. There are some beginner walls, but even then some are still challenging for beginners. It was so much fun to watch more of the advanced climbers climb walls I could only dream of climbing myself. It's so inspiring, and I'd love to get myself back on that wall to keep practicing and improving. I hope to visit Rock Spot again soon to work on my skills :) read more

This place is a hidden gem! I walk in and I'm immediately greeted by friendly staff. Good vibes. Not a climber myself, but was there for a birthday party. This place was an absolute blast to watch. I can only imagine how much fun it would e to haul my lard butt up the walls. There were varying levels of difficulty, straight up to inverted. There were areas for kids to start to learn and build confidence. The place is huge and while there seemed to be a lot of people there, there were still many open tracks. The equipment looked like it was designed with safety in mind. The population seemed to run from young teens to the later 20 something crowed. So a good mix. And, it looked like a great place for parties. read more

I'm so upset that we decided to visit Rock Spot. I brought my two sons and my nephew on a Saturday as I thought it would be a really neat thing to do that they would enjoy. One of my children is an adventurist and loves trying new things, he had a good time for the duration we were there. My other child is a bit on the soft spoken side and is very timid. I foolishly, thought this place deals with children regularly as they boast about their birthday parties. I was so very wrong. Or maybe it was just the worker Alex that very much enjoys torturing children. As my children were climbing I looked over at my timid son and and my nephew I noticed that my son appeared to be upset and scared while up on the wall so I immediately walked over and as I did the worker Alex quickly let my son down. My son came right over to me and said in a whisper "He wouldn't let me down when I asked". I assumed he (the worker Alex) was just trying to be positive and help him along like "it's OK buddy, just keep trying, you can do it". Unfortunately that wasn't the case. My son was visibly upset and on the verge of tears which isn't the norm unless he's been made very upset. My nephew who came with us (a kid that's never scared) says "That guy is really mean". I asked him why and he said "He wouldn't let me down and I was scared." Now I know without a shadow of a doubt that what I saw from a distance was was indeed my son being pushed way past his comfort level. Both my son and my nephew asked over and over to be put down only to be brought to tears because a Rock Spot employee refused to put him down. How dare he bring my wonderful beautiful timid child to tears over not letting a clearly upset child down from a HIGH place. Is it because I was far enough away not to hear it? I took the three children I brought and left right away and I will never go back. I will regret the traumatic experience my 7 year old and 6 year old nephew had there for a very long time. If you are planning on bringing a timid child be sure to tell the person holding them up to let them down as soon as they ask. I think a better plan is to save your money and avoid the stress by not visiting Rock Spot. read more

So.... I am afraid of heights and have vertigo, BUT I still like to try new things, so when a friend told me she had a free pass for rock climbing, I was all about it. We went at a quiet-ish time of day, which was good because it made the experience less intimidating. The staff got me outfitted in a belt and some climbing shoes, then gave me detailed instructions as to what to do and what not to do. The thorough instruction session really calmed my nerves and made me feel more in control of what I was doing. While my fear of heights did get the better of me at many times over the course of the day (mostly when trusting the auto-belay and getting down), I still climbed up several of the shorter walls and had a lot of fun doing it. I was mostly concerned with just getting to the top rather than doing some of the more difficult climbs, so my endeavors were certainly more free form than they're supposed to be, but I don't care, I was just in it for the fun. The staff change out the climbs once a month, so there's always a new challenge to try, and each climb is numbered for difficulty with 5.5 being the easiest. I tried a couple 5.5s and 5.6s over the course of the day, but mostly just grabbed the handle-thing (what are they called?) nearest me. I believe that this particular gym is one of the largest in the area, and even though it got busier the longer we were there, it never felt crowded. There are more than enough walls for people to find a space on, and all of the other climbers were really polite and didn't make you feel rushed or self-conscious. I was also a bit surprised at the huge varieties of ages there. There were kids as young as ten, and people as old as 40+. The climbing itself was actually easier than I thought it would be considering I have very little upper body strength. You use your legs and arms together, and the movement feels strangely natural. I guess all that tree-climbing I did as a kid is still buried in my muscle memory. This is something I'm definitely going to do more often. I may not be scaling any mountains any time soon, but this is still an adventurous workout. read more

The staff is great! Very friendly, very helpful. The setting is usually spot on, and varies enough to keep it interesting given the small space and lack of any real geometry to the wall construction. But thats about where it ends. This gym is a classic case of what can pass as a "good" climbing gym in a community that doesnt have any other option. 1) Its extremely small, with a major lack of additional amenities for the price 2) their student deal blows 3) ALWAYS full of kids, birthday parties, summer camps.... 4) they need to give yoga a better space, its one of the few really great perks 5) they dont open till 10 am! C'mon, that means I'm forced to climb after work when its crowded 6) they wont let you teach your partner how to sport, make you take a bs $60 class. (I under stand liability, but they wont even let you mock lead while your clipped into an auto belay - pretty much a cash squeeze) Ive belonged to about 6 or 7 climbing gyms over the years in as many different cities. This is by far my least favorite. p.s. since it is the only one in the area, here would be some suggestions (given their space is limited) 1) open at 6:30 or 7 am, then you might actually get a before work crowd. 10 am is stupid, might as well be noon. 2) roof over part of the down stair section so you have a cavern, similarly add over hung sections to the top ceiling so you can do over transits 3) limit the number of damn kids parties - its unfair to members 4) make room for actual locker rooms 5) stop squeezing your damn students. 50$ a month for a student membership for S RI is ridiculous. While Ive pain 50-60$ /month for student memberships at other rock gyms these gyms have full work out areas (weights/cardio), more free classes, and overall much much more square footage read more

Rock Spot has the best rock climbing gyms in the area. I went to this one since it was the closest to me and was not disappointing. The Staff: They're knowledgeable about climbing and are very friendly to talk to. They make all new members go through an orientation process to know what the gym rules are. This is excellent in my opinion because many climbing gyms don't require orientations. As a result, many new climbers often talk to others while someone is attempting a problem right above them. This place makes sure every new climber starts off on the right foot with proper gym etiquette and safety. The Bouldering: There are two bouldering walls: 1 large wall with an incline and partial cave and the 2nd on the 2nd floor which is all vertical problems. Also, the lead climbing routes have bouldering problems at the start. The walls are poured concrete (more expensive than plaster or plywood, but much better to maintain long term and it gives you a more realistic feel compared to outdoor climbing). All of the problems I looked at still had good grip to the holds and weren't overly worn out like most places I've been to. They reset problems every 6 weeks which is also much more frequent than most other gyms. I've only been to one gym that reset their problems more frequently than that. The grades go from VB to V10 to accommodate for all abilities. The Top Robing: There's standard top roping with a wide range of grades. If you don't have a partner, there's even auto belaying devices for some of the stations that are pretty simple to use, even for fresh beginners. Overall, it's a high quality gym with a good staff that keeps the place well regulated. I'm definitely going back for more sessions. read more

Sweet climbing gym with very friendly and knowledgable staff! Prices have always been fair ($35/mo EFT for students!), the facility is clean, and the route setting is pretty solid. We come down from Lincoln to Peace Dale to work on some great lead walls and love the atmosphere. The gym is really accessible and accommodate all levels of climbing. Harder, more overhung boulder problems and taller top-rope/lead walls are on the main floor, while you can find some shorter, easier routes are upstairs. It can get pretty crowded at times, especially in the evening or when there's a birthday party going on, but a lot of beginners end up hanging up on the second floor. The only other thing I could ask for from my climbing gym is more room and equipment for training. If they could fit a weight rack somewhere in the gym, it would be definitely be my one-stop fitness shop. read more

Great place for bouldering. Hands down best mat/floor system of any gym I have been to. No need to drag mats around (Integrated mat/floor system), firm enough but not tough landings when jump down from bouldering. No soggy spots. Really outstanding. I feel like a dork for even saying it but I didn't know the floor at a climbing gym could be that good. And I've climbed at a lot of gyms in many different states. Good range of problems with reasonable problems in the cave. Just getting back to climbing after an injury so very refreshing to see V0-V2 in the cave. Nice range of lengths for the problems. The walls are ling enough and spread out that I wasn't climbing on top of anyone with a decent amount of room. I was there at an off time so not busy at all-might be different at busy times. I brought my own gear so I can't comment on the rental equipment. Air was clear in terms of chalk. Nice change from some of the gyms I've been to. Definitely spelled like a gym. Pretty much the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. The person working was nice and friendly. I was just in RI for a day but if I come back I would definitely climb at RSC again. read more

My family and I love this place. Very kid and beginner friendly. I have attended rock climbing gyms in other states that have come across as pretentious and unfriendly. Rock spot is the opposite. The staff are super knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. I appreciate their membership deals and commitment to existing and new members. My 10yo is totally hooked on climbing and has attended summer camps and lessons here. The staff and other regular members have been so patient and encouraging towards him. He told me that it is a "community." His enthusiasm for the sport and his determination would not be possible without this place. I am 44 yo and my husband is 46-we're both novices and we joined when they ran a special membership deal. Such a great way to spend time with my family, challenge myself, and exercise regularly. This place has truly been a saving grace for my family as we navigate social distancing and covid related restrictions. They have done a great job with COVID precautions and they handle customers who refuse to wear masks strictly but professionally. It took a few times to get used to climbing with a mask, but now it just seems normal. We love local, small business that actually understand connection and customer service! read more
