First of all, this place has a HUGE menu but my friends and I stuck to sushi. I'll definitely be back to try the wraps (which one of my friends mentioned are generously portioned) and noodles (which one of the employees was eating nearby and looked delicious). We ordered gyoza to start. They were tasty and crispy without being too hard. For dinner, we shared a Beatle Maki, a Strawberry Maki, and a Samurai Maki (It was 1/2 off thanks to the Yelp offer!). I enjoyed all three, but the Strawberry Maki stood out the most. Service was pleasant and attentive without being overbearing. The food came out quickly. And best of all, it's BYOB! Aside from Pequod's, it's hard to find an affordable, quick dinner place near Webster Place. We met here for dinner before the movies. There were multiple menus and we did a little but of Japanese and a little bit of Thai. I'm usually skeptical of places that mix the Asians (is that PC? Probably not...). All in all, the food was just okay. The asparagus tempura sushi was great, the chicken teriyaki a little dry, and the gyoza was delicious. The service was slow, but the staff was really nice. It's BYOB and really affordable. Three people, three entrees, three appetizers all for $50. I wish my fish allergy allowed me to try more of the sushi! read more

Came here with a friend of mine last Friday. Had purchased a restaurant.com certificate so figure to give this place a shot. It was empty by the time we walked in, 2 other tables besides ours had customers. Walking into this place, you can definitely tell there's fish. Not sure if I have a sensitive nose but many sushi places I've been to, doesn't really smell bad, this smelled not so good. It's ok though, it's a small place, move along. One thing I noticed was the water glass I was given was chipped, as was the small plate. This is already not a good sign so stars docked for that. Food was decent, we both ordered soup, I had the Tom Yum and then she suggested I have 2 rolls b/c I'm a big guy. Tall yes, Big no - I'm a skinny dude. I decided to go against her suggestion and get 1 roll. That was enough. Food - overall the food was good, Tom Yum has a slight kick and was hot coming out. The rolls (yes I know I'm eating vegetarian sushi rolls), was pretty good as well I'd have to say. I'd give it 3.5 stars overall, if the tableware was in decent condition I'd bump it up. TERRIBLE location for solo female diners. If you are an empowered woman who needs to grab a a bite, DO NOT come here because they will make you feel terrible! I came in for a sampling of their more complex tempura rolls and really enjoyed them all, and loved seeing black rice on the menu nonetheless, I was told over three times to not come back if I was eating alone, even tho I was the ONLY customer in the place during regular hours! And this was Not said jokingly. I felt trapped because I had already purchased the groupon, and had to tell the employee to stop talking to me about it. I told her three times to not tell me again because I already didn't want to be there. I was told I would have to order more than the groupon value if I wanted to be served, again, even tho it was during regular hours! This place is a gem. Reasonably priced and BYOB! Our favorite appetizer is the Golden Triangle (at $12 it's definitely well worth it). Favorite rolls, in no particular order: Blackhawks, Chicago Bulls, and the Rock Star (all are on the Chef's Speciality menu). Our server was friendly and attentive; she made sure our water was filled and checked in at appropriate moments (not when our mouths were filled with a rolls). Came in a little before 12pm on Sunday hoping for a nice apres yoga lunch option. Place was creepily empty and stayed that way throughout until we left at 1pm. Menus were worn and peeling, food pricey ($7 for tiny seaweed salad...c'mon) for the quality of the food, service and the run down decor. Me and my girlfriend had the pad see eiw and unfortunately I can't remember the name of the rolls but one was with shrimp and the other with salmon. Very fresh fish and the taste was great. From my experience I would recommend sticking to the Thai menu and avoiding the Japanese menu. The sushi is really not good, it was actually gross. From the Thai menu I ordered The Kao soy soup and it was excellent. It's really more of a curry dish, thick and creamy, but they list it as a soup. Love love LOVE rock wrap and roll!! From the interior design, service, and food this place deserves 6 stars, not 5. I usually don't rave about restaurants, but this place has everything from a trendy ambiance, easy street parking in front, cool sushi art, impeccable taste, and INCREDIBLE (caps necessary) service. I am actually from Michigan, but every time I visit Chicago, I never fail to dine here. I would STRONGLY suggest an order of the Virgin bride. Although the roll is a bit pricey, the quality and quantity of the fish makes it worth it. I also want to give a special shout out to who i assume is the owner of the place, sugar. She really seems like a cheerful person and even gave us free dessert because she remembered my boyfriend and I from our last visit! Fantastic cozy unpretentious little place! Great Thai and Japanese food selections, and the most amazing service. If you are not keen on ordering Asian cuisine (we've all had that challenge), I would recommend asking questions when ordering and expressing to the servers what you like/dislike. The food was aesthetically appealing as well as DELICIOUS -- I got the Snow Ball maki roll and also tried the Spicy Tuna roll and Fried Calamari roll. Each was unique and delicious...great presentation. The staff was friendly and played "Happy Birthday" over their speaker system for my friend's birthday. We had a party of 7 with a nice table -- the restaurant is very small yet inviting and houses modern, edgy décor. Overall a great experience... and BYOB - no cork fee was nice. Everything was so good here. For sushi we had Godzilla and Volcano, so delicious both of them. Then we ordered Pork Katsu because we wanted something more and it was not a disappointment. Sushi? sushi? did someone say sushi? yes they have sushi, and so much more! These guys do a really great job, they have some amazing appetizers, noodles, and some really awesome sushi. They prep there salmon in a way that it is smooth and creamy, never had anything like it. Virgin bride roll is the way to go! BYOB is really fun, especially when my wife and i put away a whole bottle of muscato with dinner, its always a fun walk home. One of the very few sushi restaurants that offers "black" rice as an option. I really like their lunch specials as well as all day items. Spicy tuna roll is killer. I hate it when spicy mayo on top of a regular tuna roll makes a "spicy tuna" roll. This place makes it properly, with the spicy mix as a part of the tuna on the inside of the roll. read more

I stumbled on this place on accident and Im glad I did. Its a BYOB sushi place that had good sushi and really great service. Went there for lunch on a weekday around two,it wasn't to crowded and we were seated right away and I so happened to have a few bottles of wine in my car. Call it alcoholism, I will just call it well prepared. We sat down ordered a few rolls that came out on a 2X4 plank (cool) and then ordered a few things from picks on the web. I had the TNT maki and the philly rolls, which did not disappoint and were very juicy and fresh. TNT was hot, and if you dig hot I recommend you give her a try. We took our kids since it was both Thai and Japanese thinking they'd find something they'd like and so would we. That happened and more - our son ordered the chicken lemon salad and our daughter got the chicken teriyaki - both delicious. We also ordered some rolls and chicken satay which my husband thought was the best he ever had. I been coming to this sushi eatery for a while now and every time I am greeted like an old friend and the service has been wonderful. I don't know much about different sushi or maki rolls and our waitress was quick to assist and ask what kind of flavors we were interested in trying so that was very helpful! This obviously isn't some fine dining sushi restaurant, its a BYOB eatery and customers should see right away that you come to enjoy a pleasant lunch or dinner on the go! My sushi - fatty tuna nigiri, fresh sashimi and their amazing specialty maki rolls like THE VIRGIN BRIDE or THE VOLCANO are just so fresh and so tasty, the sushi chef must of been an artist in his previous life! One other thing I love about Rock js that the owners listen to customer ideas... I mentioned on one of my visits how I loved soft shell crab well a week later I see a Facebook post telling customers to try the new seasonal special Soft Shell Crab!! Omg delissshhhhhh they have taken other ideas under consideration and that's a sign of catering to your customers if I say!!! I highly recommend this joint to fam and friends and everyone comes away loving it! Oh yeah one more thing I love the Rock Fried Rice!! I posted a pic NOM NOM! I was very surprised how good this place was. It's very small place. Had the crab ragoon and cashew stir fry with tofu, both worth going back for. So many places don't seem to cook tofu well enough, they cooked it to perfection. It's nice to see Clybourn getting new places. read more

A great find for authentic & updated Thai/ sushi!! They have a very friendly staff, chic decor & cheap, yummy lunch specials!! My favorite was the "boat noodle" soup. Loved this sushi spot. I had two rolls, one was their "most yelped" roll and I believe it was the crunchy spicy tuna. The other I had was spicy hamachi. It's not too fancy at all. The place was not busy during the week, but I also went during an early dinner time. It started to get more busy throughout the night. I thought the sushi was pretty fresh, but the service was a little slow and not the friendliest. I'll def be back. read more

I came here last night for dinner with my sister. The decor at this place is pretty cool (oddly shipped mirrors and all that jazz). The waitress took care us promptly. We ordered Red Hot and Godzilla rolls. The Godzilla was amazing. It was warm and on point. The Red Hot had jalapeno and I'm pretty good with hot food but this roll had a kick to it. Perfect! The Red Hot was not my favorite roll but it was pretty good. I would order it again just to taste the cilantro! Yes, I said cilantro. In a sushi roll. The only disappointing aspect was that our rolls were not decorated like some of the pictures show. Not knocking the quality of the food but I would have loved the design :) read more
