Each time I visit this exceptional bakery, cafe, or neighborhood congregation I'm astounded how the exceptional staff remember everyone's name and events in their lives... And I've come to the easy conclusion... Rockwood hires smart... And smart these amazing employees, staff and acquaintances are. Liz, whom I've learned is working on her Masters while saving her pay and backpacking around the world; Iceland, Ecuador & 11 (yes 11) other countries. Michelle, a kindergarten teacher who loves & has mastered organic gardening. Lauren is an art major with a promising hobby in painting..then you've seen the long lean Sam who minor edit in Dance.. What an impressive group of talent including Those whom I have not mentioned who I just haven't had the honor of meeting & speaking. They don't have wi-fi which just totally sucks. Because I really like the atmosphere of this place, and I love the location. I haven't eaten anything there because they don't seem to have anything vegan, probably not a single thing. A great place to have coffee and read, or meet up with friends. I almost never go there because they don't have wi-fi, and I'm on the internet a lot, the internet goes pretty good with coffee in my opinion. So I have to settle for the Rocket cafes or this f&%$ing lame-ass Tully's cafe in Browne's Addition. Or Chairs coffee, but that place is often kinda out of my way. read more

Loved going here on a Monday morning. It was busy but I found a nice spot by the door for reading and coffee sipping. The interior is so cute and I was charmed right the moment I walked in. I was then greeted by a HUUUUGE case filled with delicious looking pastries! Cookies, cupcakes, scones, muffins, quiche, pie. It was amazing! The woman behind the counter was very kind and expedient. I got my apricot almond scone (so good!) and biscotti (great flavor) right away. Someone took my coffee (grrr) but the barista replaced it and it was a great soy lattee- I always appreciate it when I can taste the espresso and not just the soy milk. If you're not one for crowds, this isn't the place to go. But try some off hours and you will love sitting and sipping just as I did. can't wait to go back for cookies and pies! read more

The lavender almond scones had great texture but were a little light on taste, dense spicy morning glory muffins deserved the name. My guy tried the quiches, a tad salty for me. Croissant - they got it down perfect. The staff varied from friendly to surly. On Sunday morning I was served a left over croissant reheated, which I didn't appreciate. The space is nice but the acoustics are challenging. I could not hear across our table but everyone around us was shouting so we heard everyone loud and clear. read more

When I was a kid growing up in Spokane, Washington there was a park on the South Hill called Manito Park which is several acres in size, if fact Manito Park is the largest park on the South Hill. It has a duck pond, Japanese gardens and rose gardens; the park also is one big Arboretum. My family and I would often have picnics in the park in the summer and would sled on the little hills in the winter. But what was always a great treat for my brother and I and friends was a little store just down the street we would frequent called Rockwood Market. It was about a quarter of a block down from Manito Park, east on 18th, and was our go-to spot for ice cream, soda and whatever junk food we could get our hands on. When my girls were little, my mother and aunts use to take them to play on the same swings, feed the same ducks (or maybe their descendants) and walk the same gardens - what great memories. Well, my little Rockwood Market closed and what I'm here to Yelp! about is a wonderful, amazing little place which opened in its place about 13 years ago called Rockwood Bakery! Those of you that follow me on Yelp! know that I'm always on the hunt for a great bakery and although Rockwood Bakery isn't new to me, I thought it was time to Yelp! On a couple of previous reviews I mentioned some of my favorite bakery spots in Seattle and Bend, and have had discussions about bakeries in Yountville and Portland, but Rockwood Bakery is now a family tradition. We love their baked pastries, quiche, coffee, sandwiches and salads. There is great indoor and outdoor seating and enough room for everyone. I think this is the best bakery in Spokane. Nestled among residential homes in the Rockwood area of the South Hill, a very welcoming place to chit chat with friends while enjoying coffee, tea and baked goods. The turnovers are flaky, fresh and delicious as well as everything else I have tried here. Also serves some warm breakfast and lunch options. At times it can be calm, but most of the times I have been there, it has been bustling with conversations and activity so if you are looking for a quiet place to have your coffee and read a book, it may not be the spot for you. The cupcakes may look enticing but I suggest you pass unless you like yours dry. While there is plenty of seating, most are wooden chairs more suitable for a quick bite to eat, rather than relaxing and chatting with friends. Suggestions: Anyone who wants to start a business in Spokane should take a short drive over to Seattle or Portland. There is no need to guess when one only needs to travel a few short hours to see how it is done right. An afternoon in Seattle sampling the coffee at Espresso Vivace, Cafe Besalu, Aster, or Lighthouse would do wonders for the employees of Rockwood. While there, I suggest they stop by Trophy cupcakes. Baking is a science not a hobby. I have had a lot of success with Yelp while in L.A., Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, BC. Unfortunately its more of a miss rather that a hit when it comes to Spokane. What seems to pass as a 5 star establishment in Spokane would barely garner a 3 star rating elsewhere. read more

I loved this place! It reminds me of eating out on Burlingame Ave. in the bay area. I like that you order at the counter and take your food to the table. There were variety of pastries and quiche and the interior and the lay out of the place is just friendly and inviting. You can also sit outside on the patio although it seemed pretty small. I think it would be great if you had a dog with you. It's kind of a random spot. We kept missing the turn because it looked like a typical neighborhood street. It's across from the Manito park, excellent for a quick stroll after a full breakfast or brunch. read more

I LOVE ROCKWOOD! The beauty of this place is that it's big enough to host a lot of different people, but small enough to always have someone you know there! So I went to visit my brother at Gonzaga with my parents and we all went to Rockwood Bakery the next morning. It was almost as good as Bulldog. The atmosphere was really inviting and the baristas were friendly. I kind of thought the cookies were too sweet for my taste but the fam loved them. I got a blueberry muffin which was pretty gigantic so I had half and saved the rest for later. Their mochas were great actually. Sitting smelling the autumn leaves surrounding me and letting the warm Fall sun envelop me was a pure joy of mine while studying at Gonzaga University. However a just as blissful joy of mine was going to Rockwood Bakery to enjoy a spicy and sassy chia tea latte in the eclectic beauty that Rockwood exuberates to all of its patrons and surroundings. This gem of the south hill was a pure joy and always put a smile on my face, I was in Spokane recently for a visit and I just had to stop in. Nothing has changes thank God! It is still warm and inviting and they still have the most amazing pastries and savory treats for any ones desire. I would recommend this place to anyone going to Spokane or living in Spokane. This establishment really shows what Spokane can be and is becoming. The location is wonderful and very close to Manito Park, close enough to take your goodies to enjoy. Rockwood Bakery has all the personalities of a local coffee shop. If you are looking for something different from Starbucks then this is the place for you. There are tables to sit indoor and also outdoor seating. A great place to just sit down and enjoy some reading with coffee and a pastry. It's a bit hidden but if you are near Manito Park you should be able to find it. Just be careful around there, you'll get a ticket for anything over 20mph. Rockwood is my favorite bakery/pastry shop in Spokane. The scones, muffins and giant cookies are to die for, especially when dunked in a delicious latte! The bikini muffin is one of my favorites, and any of the cookies will satisfy that sweet tooth. Also, the quiche is the absolute best in Spokane, and anywhere that I've had! It's got the perfect golden brown crust, fresh ingredients, and a deliciously creamy egg filling! I particularly enjoy Rockwood on a cool fall or winter morning or afternoon. read more

OMG - YUMMY!!!! I am visiting from Iowa and my friend said we have to walk to this cute little bakery with the best zucchini walnut bread so off we went. OMG, it was yummy and so was the quiche and the chocolate croissants!!!!! We ate breakfast there and brought some goodies home for the next day. I like the Rockwood and drop by often. Their coffee is the best on South Hill. But two caveats I don't see mentioned above. Unlike most coffee house these days, no internet access, and it is too noisy in the 10-2 slot to get any work done, if that is why you are there. Definitely the place for the local ladies to come for lunch and a (loud) chat. I like the Rockwood best after 3:00 when it clears out. But then, I am usually looking for a place to write.
