Definitely my favorite weekend hang out in town. While it is always packed, it is a great ambiance to catch up with friends or just sit and read a book (my usual go to). They have good coffee, and amazing baked goods. I'm not usually a fan of scones, but there's are outstanding. If you get there early enough they usually have day old baked goods at a discount too. Ok, so after moving to Spokane and the lovely South Hill my wife and I decided to take a nice Sunday walk and stop by this cute local spot. Because, after all isn't little neighborhood spots what the Hill is all about. Anyhow, the Bakery seems to have a good assortment of fresh baked fair. Specifically, pastry, rolls, muffins and the like. My wife and I try to get the protein based fair and they had two different quiches available. So we ordered a couple slices and grabbed a coffee refill. This is the kind of place where they grab your slices of quiche toss them in the microwave and there you go. Of course, the absent minded guy microwaving said quiche took about 5 minutes to do so and then gave them to someone else. Ok, fine accident, I get it. So we grabbed an Inlander and told the girl making coffee that we still needed our quiche. Again a few minutes later one quiche was set down. That my wife gave me and I went and sat outside while she awaited her second one. Of course after a few more minutes the coffee girl asked why my wife was waiting. Ahhh, for the second quiche....ugh....annoying. So needless to say we had a 15 minute wait for two pieces of microwaved quiche that needless to say were cold in the middle. I did enjoy the pie crust. So Rockwood is a nice cozy bakery that has clearly lost touch with the people that actually support it. The staff was pretty much consistently clueless, and when the weren't clueless they were rude. Service 1 star "blech" Food 2 stars Cold eggs, nice crust Feel 3-4 stars Nice place to sit back drink coffee and read the paper Overall 2 stars, I don't care how nice it looks, rude wait staff and cold food ruin what I thought was a South Hill place 2 go. This has got to be one of the things I miss the most about Spokane. I loved waking up on a Saturday morning, going for a long run on the Bloomsday course, and then heading over (AFTER showering!) to Rockwood (ANY of the locations) and enjoying my afternoon. You can read a newspaper, enjoy a coffee, talk to some random strangers, eat some quiche, drink some beer...take your pick. It was a rough morning. I needed a treat. I had an iced americano and the meat quiche of the day. Quiche was uber delicious. Doused it with some Tabasco, and it was perfect. This place gets a 3 because it's really just a pastry bakery. If you're hungry for scones, muffins, and a coffee drink this is the place. Otherwise, a quiche is as close to "real" food as you can. Yay! We have definitely found our new "must-stop" on travels thru Spokane! Rockwood is in a GREAT location--very 'neighborhood-y,' but still a quick off and on if you only ever travel through Spokane (like us). My litmus test for any bakery like this, like it or not, is their coffee. Lattes, to be exact. Rockwood passed my test with flying colors. Yum! I wish I could have one right now. As far as food goes, this place is mostly of the pastry variety. However, we found their yoghurt and granola to be hearty and protein packed. Warning: Don't stop here, if you are pregnant and love pastries! (More of a note to myself ) I have been meaning to try this place based on reviews and finally did when I was in the area. I walked in thinking I was just going to get one pastry to try but sadly due to my current pregnancy condition I walked out spending over $30 on pastries! I got an almond croissant, bear claw, two strawberry champagne cupcakes, I had to try the bacon quiche of course! I desperately wanted a chocolate croissant but they were sold out (they should keep more on hand!) All the pastries I ordered were fabulous! Especially the croissant, it was so buttery and flakey and delicious. The quiche was outstanding! I was a bit disappointed in cupcakes. They were not my favorite and actually I bought one for my kiddo and one for me and neither us liked them. They ended up in the trash. I am not sure how to explain they were not good, perhaps too sweet? The frosting was not great it was real sugary and I am not a fan of that type of frosting. Overall though I love the shop and I love the other pastries! I will definitely be back! I still want to try a chocolate croissant! I just don't normally make it out early since I work so I wish they would have some left later in the afternoon! Tucked away in a neighborhood, this coffee shop is a great find! Large selection of pasteries and baked goodies (try their snickerdoodle cookie), as well as friendly baristas who make mean caffeinated beverages. The baristas here are so friendly that one said "hello" to me at a local restaurant and asked me to stop stalking him. So far, I haven't been informed of any restraining order, so I take it as a sign of friendliness...both at work and outside of work! read more

I'm from out of town, but found Rockwood on yelp and went there because of the others' reviews. Let me tell you, they do not disappoint. Excellent coffee, great food selection (I had a cranberry/orange scone for breakfast, followed up 20 minutes later w a chicken chipotle sandwich on focaccia), a friendly staff who made more than small talk, plenty of space (the place was hopping for a Saturday late morning), and a very inviting atmosphere. High ceilings with arched pass-throughs, mixed seating arrangements (tables, sofas, benches, plush chairs), and warm colors invite you to stay and linger awhile. They have the fortune of being surrounded by houses, so it has a very communal feel, and everyone seems to fall victim to a leisurely pace. Definitely my kind of establishment. If you're in the area, or haven't tried it yet, I suggest you hit up the Rockwood cause you'll be glad you did. read more

Rockwood is definitely on my list of places to swing by on a Sunday morning South Hill excursion. I usually make myself happy with a delicious scone--make sure you get it warmed!--this week it was chocolate chip orange. But I've also found their sandwiches and other sweet treats to my liking. The nice thing about the Rockwood is that it's got some space, without losing the casual, cozy feel. Although I'm not really a hang out type of person, the Rockwood seems like a place where you could happily spend some time. As far as a bakery goes, this is definitely a hot spot in Spokane. Great savory options - I had a spicy ham quiche that was one of the best I've ever had - and an amazing selection of sweets. However, two reasons for a 3-star: the con panna I ordered was very over-extracted, but still pretty bitter; and the guest service could use a little work. The three people at the counter intentionally avoided eye contact until they were completely ready to help you, and I tried to make conversation but the girl helping me would have nothing of the sort. Went here on a beautiful Sunday morning around 9am. I had a mixed berry scone and a double vanilla latte. Both were so good! I am not usually a scone fan but this one was quite tasty. Rockwood bakery is tucked away on a little residental street near Manito Park. It used to be a neighborhood grocery store, but for the past 10 or so years, it has been a great bakery. The place is actually quite large and has lots of comfy seating inside and out, and there is always interesting artwork on the walls. They serve your typical bakery stuffs: muffins, danishes, quiches, etc. Their quiches are delicious, and I love their muffins. They made my day when I was there a few days ago because they had huckleberry muffins! Espresso is pretty good as well. All in all, an excellent well-rounded bakery. read more

Rockwood Bakery is undeniably good. I've been happy with everything I've ever gotten, and the people that work there always seem smiley and kind. Coffee: Fabulous coffee. My standard drink is an iced white chocolate mocha and they execute them with precision. If I feel like pretending to be more hip than I actually am I will get an espresso macchiato (a shot of espresso with a touch of milk foam on top) and have been pleased with those as well. Food: Nothing particularly memorable necessarily, (except their tomato soup... Yum) although I think of their food with fondness, and have never had anything I remember disliking. Vibe: This place is pretty much a converted historic home by the looks of it and I love it! Antique pictures and paintings on the wall, and a bunch of really pretty wood make the interior inviting. Their comfy antique-style furniture make this place over-the-top awesome, and if you can force yourself out the door (difficult to do...) take a quick walk across the street to Manito and enjoy the surrounding neighborhood! read more

This is a tough one for me. The proximity to the park makes this a perfect location to meet with friends, have some coffee and conversation and walk through the park. The bakery turns out some great stuff and the coffee is on par with the best of Spokane. I had a Carmel late which was fantastic. Additionally, the restaurant has great seating areas and a nice patio for warm days. So, if everything is good, what's the catch? No Wifi. I understand that they're trying to create a certain mood and that laptops and screens can distract from the experience they're trying to deliver, but this, combined with the fact that everyone there is engaged in conversation, makes it nearly impossible to get work done. Being that that's the primary reason I frequent coffee shops, I can't give this place a 5 star. That said, if you're looking for a nice coffee date to chat this place is a Spokane must. read more

I can give you certainty with that. The ceilings are high and filled with the smell of baked goods,coffee, and joy. My first words were, I feel like I'm in Disneyland. The counter displays savory and sweet items from quiche to cupcakes. When the presentation is this good, then you know the food is too. You can see the passions that's gone in to these goodies made from scratch. I ordered a chocolate chip scone with orange zest and an americano. My husband ordered a mocha with an almond orange bun. There was some reviews that said the coffee was just "meh" but I beg to differ. The coffee was robust but a gentle sweetness. There's a happy medium when pleasing the public and they've hit the mark with their coffee. Price point is on par for the market. 4 pastries and two 16oz coffees was $21. That's about what you would pay at Starbucks. Remember you're supporting local and keeping gems like this one in business. This one is big for me, customer service. Ya they have it!! They are making eye contact, letting you know you can take you time, and giving you a smile. It's all in the details, understanding your patron, and really making them feel valued.
