A long time Kansas City, KS resident -- no stranger to Mexican restaurants (think Southwest Blvd.) -- I moved to Leavenworth Co. a few years ago with the elitist attitude most of my fellow city slickers deploy, and was dumbstruck when I found Rodeo Mexican Restaurant in this small bedroom community west of the metro. The menu has more than enough variety to keep adventurous diners supplied with new experience time after time. The staff and the consistent quality of the food coming out of the kitchen is wonderful; the business is obviously well managed. The decor and ambiance is top-notch with extra attention given to all the knotty eastern red cedar embellishments around the interior -- most notably the rustic window casings and framework around the bar. This place is a hike from our house, but we've heard good things about it so we came on a Friday night. It wasn't that busy but we did have a reservation. They have a couple beers on draft and multiple flavors of frozen & on the rock margaritas. We like their spicy salsa, you do have to request it specifically. I loved my enchiladas and my husband got a chicken chimichanga and ate the whole thing. We will definitely be back here. Worth the drive! read more

This restaurant is a gem! Easy to access off State Avenue in Basehor just minutes West of the Kansas Speedway. Local family-owned. We ate at Rodeo for lunch. Awesome! Fresh salsa made daily, creamy queso, great avocado creme with the chips. I had the spinach enchiladas and my wife had grilled veggie tacos. Fresh, so flavorful! Originally a pizzeria, then a cafe and most recently a Mexican restaurant, I was hopeful when another Mexican place moved into the space. The last place was dreadful in both food quantity and most disastrous, service. The Rodeo must have taken note of their predecessor's short comings. I've been twice. Service is fantastic. Chips and salsa are provided with a green avocado-based sauce. I'd rather have cheese dip but the green sauce is pretty good. Just after they opened, I tried the fried avocado stuffed with beef. Tasty and filling. Served with tortilla soup, rice and refried beans relieves the portion concern. It was more than enough. On my second trip I have a combination plate that included a beef quesadilla and a beef enchilada. Both were delicious and satisfying. There are plenty of interesting menu choices that I plan to try on subsequent visits, including a few seafood dishes. I am beginning to become optimistic on whether this place will succeed at this cursed location. read more

Yum! Visiting Kansas City for a few days and saw the great reviews. Got the fajita chicken burrito with white cheese sauce and it was amazing. Huge, stuffed with chicken, and those fresh tortillas...man. Why doesn't every restaurant make their tortillas fresh?! You can instantly taste the difference. Loved the salsa (warm and smokey flavored) and whatever the green dip is. Mixing the two was the best. I got my food in less than ten minutes; they weren't terribly busy. Excellent food! I am pretty picky when it comes to Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican cuisine. Rodeo has great food, and their salsa is unique. They have a wonderful creamy verde salsa, as well as a chunky "regular" salsa with a more unique blend of flavors, and offer a spicier option now, too. Their pork tamales are hard to beat, and they have a large menu with many house specialities. The service is wonderful, and everyone is so friendly and prompt without being a pest. My family tried out the new place in the bad location last week and were very suprised at what we got. We went around 5pm, and there wasnt much of a crowd in the place. We were sat quickly and drinks were delivered fast. The chips and dip were also brought to the table quickly. Our food order was taken fast and only had to wait around 10 min, which to me was normal. The food was very good, and there was plenty of it. The best part of this place is the staff. They were great towards us and didnt mind a toddler walking around while one of us ate. By the time we left, there wasnt a seat to be found on the floor. It filled up quickly and I haven't heard anyone complain about the place yet. We will be going back. read more

First of all, I'm a Mexican food snob! We tried this restaurant on a whim 13 minutes from my house. I can't even begin to tell you, this is the best Mexican food around. Ask for flour tortilla chips and the fajitas poblanos for2 is enough for 3. Don't even get me started about the homemade grilled flour tortillas! I don't even eat the tortillas normally but would have gladly had many more. Lastly the Rodeo Margarita had a good orange flavor ant at 5.99 for a grande one, I wasn't disappointed. And ask for Juan. Service was just poor. When we first walked in the hostess or waitress just walked away and ignored us until more people walked in and it got busier. We were a party of 10, so it's not hard to miss us. Our waitresses seemed to not want to deal with us and they were really confused and took about 10 minutes to be seated. The two waitresses we had seemed very out of it and didn't know how to do their job and a lot of things were wrong, I.E missed orders , no refills offered, BUT the food over all is outstanding and delicious, very authentic, came with free queso! Horchata was good but the cinnamon they put on top just got inhaled in my lungs and didn't mix in well with the drink . If it wasn't for the service I rate it 5 stars. read more

Delicious! The send visit I tried the Chile Relleno. This is often bland or greasy. Not here, it was a huge delicious pepper with nice subtle breading and very good cheese. Go there. Best Mexican food I've had in ages. Comparable to Mexecito in Lawrence. Wonderful, homemade salsa & chips. I had the enchiladas molé, which was amazing. My wife had chicken fajita nachos. Also very good. The food finds good balance between spicy (which I like) and less so (which my wife likes). But it's all bursting with flavor.
