It is with a confused background that I submit these comments about Alvaro Rodriguez Flooring. He's a one-man company and seemed to be a nice guy? I gave him one-star because he never did do the work he promised to do. First, while we were setting up for measurement visits, he stood me up. This is where he had made an appointment with me - time/date at my place and did not show up or call. He did this TWICE and never apologized for either time. Red Flag #1. I gave him the benefit of the doubt because I thought he would be "better" as we moved along in the process? Then, when it came time to quote my job (bottom floor of my townhome), which was for hardwood flooring. He emailed me the quote/contract (standard, 3-page format). I noticed, he wrote in the quote that he was "requiring" 1/2 of the total job (around $5K) as a deposit. The CA state contractor law says you can only ask for 10%, upfront for a deposit. Alvaro would not accept that. We went back/forth for almost a week. Then, out of the blue, he says OK you don't need a deposit and I'll arrange billing on a "special" schedule. Which was 1/2 when he started the job and the other 1/2 when he completed the job. Still, not right but (at least) better than what he originally wanted. But I couldn't help but remember how vehement he was about wanting 1/2 of the job as the deposit. He stated that he "liked me" as the reason for forgoing his initial (illegal) deposit demands. Red Flag #2. He emailed me a revised contract/quote with the new payment schedule. Telling me he would start work next month. I had it a few days before I could read it (as I was out of town and did not have access to personal emails). So, when I returned home I finally had a chance to read the quote. All seemed to be fine. However, I noticed he did not sign the new quote. He actually initialed (I wasn't sure if it was his initials because his penmanship was a bit sloppy) the quote, near the signature line. The signature line was blank. I emailed him back to tell him this. He disputed it and said the quote was OK (on his end) and wanted me to sign it (not initial it) and mail it back to him. I informed him, without his signature (not his initials), the form was not a legal document. I told him I would only sign the contract/quote, after he did. He steadfastly declined. So, the next thing I know is he's emailing me to say, he is going to "forget" the quote and move on with other jobs. Needless to say, I was flabbergasted. He is going to walk-away from my job? After committing to do it and giving me a timeline to start the job. I thought this was ludicrous and very unprofessional. Why did he decline signing the contract/quote? I guess I'll never know? While Alvaro seemed to be a nice guy, I had my doubts about him and how he ran his business (see Red Flags #1 & #2). I guess, this should have tipped me off that he wasn't very professional. He has good Yelp feedback and decent references, so I am a bit distressed about how all of this unfolded. I strongly suspect, he low-balled me on his quote (he was inexpensive) and did not want to deliver his agreed upon pricing (as he was very busy with work orders). Truth be told, if this was true, he could have re-negotiated his pricing and I still would consider it (as long as his prices remained competitive). read more

We had about 600sq ft of 12mm laminate flooring installed upstairs. The original subfloor was quite uneven. The first contractor that we attempted to go with (NOT Alvaro nor his company. a completely different party) failed to undercut the door jamb trim and patched the uneven areas with plaster that seemed to crack and move about after it had dried. Needless to say, we asked the original contractor to pack up and go. When we found Alvaro, it took a few attempts to get him in , but when he arrived (on time, by the way), he asked all the right questions. He literally echoed everything that I had been thinking about. He screwed down the subfloor, which was desperately needed to stop the squeaks. He even recommended for us to simply replace the areas of subfloor that were no longer even -- I hadn't even thought of that as a quick and cheap option. This is precisely what we pay for: professional advice from a real flooring professional. He even suggested that we add better cork underlayment to reduce noise. The end result was fantastic. From the outset, he was very careful to ask the right questions to get a feel for how anal/OCD we were. We walked downstairs to inspect some existing flooring and he pointed out some flaws and asked us if that kind of stuff bothered us. After spending a few minutes establishing and harmonizing expectations on both sides, he basically told us that he can take it from there and he did just that. Everything else was done under his supervision and he really did just make it happen without me having to intervene or question the quality of his work. As a busy person, I find this level of service and trust invaluable. The biggest area of concern for me was the transition between the flooring and the stair bullnose. The subfloor in that area was VERY uneven and I had no clue how anyone could remediate that. Thankfully, Alvaro "donated" a stair bullnose, cut and stained it to match perfectly. This undoubtedly required some true craftsmanship. He is a real carpenter, not just a floor installer from a big box store. Someone on Yelp complained about his communication skills. His English is fine. I was able to communicate with him perfectly -- even over the phone AND email. Yes, he actually knows how to use email, unlike most tech-averse independent contractors. He even sent us a proper/professional statement of work and invoice as an electronic doc via email. I'm a tech worker so I can appreciate this. I'm not sure why some people expect to find a native-English-speaking contractor who can converse and write like a megacorp publicist. Anyhow, I don't want to spend the rest of the day typing up this review. TL;DR -- if you want it done right with minimal hand-holding, Alvaro is your guy. With that said, he may not be available right away as good people are busy. Don't expect him to drop everything and move you to the front of the line. Some folks on Yelp are babies. read more

I left a message in the morning and my call was returned at 9pm, I called back the next morning and we scheduled an appointment for 5pm. Alvaro showed up late and looked at the floors that just needed to be sanded down and restained, he said that he couldn't give us an estimate because we didn't remember what company we bought the hardwood floors from. We hired Rodriguez hardwood floors to install new floors throughout our home; which had dingy old carpet stapled onto 1960s parquet. To start, Alvaro guided us to perform a repair and refinish of our existing parquet rather than a new install, a decision that saved us a huge amount of money. While we were perhaps a bit skeptical whether the floors could be saved, we couldn't be more pleased with the end result. Were we left speechless when we saw our new floors. When time came to perform the work, they showed up on time, and helped us move our furniture into the garage. They were very courteous and careful with our belongings. We felt comfortable leaving our home in their hands for a few days while they rescued us from our abysmal flooring. Alvaro and his crew worked diligently over five days - repairing, sanding, staining, and finishing the floors for us on schedule. We were astounded with the final product. Our sparkling, stained flooring looked nothing like it did before we left. The base molding on the walls was removed during the work, and replaced like it had never been taken off. We were amazed at the overall attention to detail; they even crafted new transition pieces of hardwood for between rooms and around our fireplace. Once the job was complete, his crew helped us replace the furniture. We love our new living space. I have no reservations in recommending Rodriguez hardwood floors to anyone who is considering a floor remodel. They are truly a shining example of expert craftsmen. A side note - they did run out of remanufactured parquet for one very small section of stained/damaged flooring (it was impossible to know how much they needed until they had removed the carpets) and promised to come back when it was re-supplied in a couple of months. Sorry I didn't post this earlier - I thought it had been posted. This work was completed in October of 2018. If we could, we would give Alvaro and his crew 10 stars. We first used Rodriguez Hardwood Floors to refinish our dining room floor -- a relatively small project. It came out so beautifully that, when we decided to remove the carpet from our hallways and stairs and have the floors refinished, we didn't even hesitate -- we called Alvaro. I can't overstate how beautiful our floors look now. They are as perfect as houses in an old house can get. Alvaro's crew removed most of the wall-to-wall carpet and then sanded and refinished the floors. For the last couple of days of the project, Alvaro came himself to finish the last details. Fantastic experience. Can't say enough good things about our experience in December 2013 with Alvaro and his employees. From his first email reply, to multiple phone calls, to our initial meeting, through our contract and all the way to the project completion - my wife and my experience with Alvaro was superb. We had about 500 square feet of hardwood flooring (dating to the 1950s) that needed to be sanded-refinished, some stone tiling removed and replaced-matched, and various patching and repairs done. Alvaro was able to accommodate our tight time frame, his crew did a great job with taping and dust control, he checked on the project by coming by our house daily and was a gentleman throughout. I was a bit suspect of hiring someone off Yelp for such an important job but could not have had a better experience. Alvaro and his crew are great hard workers. He refinished some existing hardwood floors and incorporated new where there was previously carpet. You cannot even tell where the old and the new meet. He also made them espresso dark (they were previously a very light and faded color). If you want good customer service then run from Alvaro. I have to say that with all the good reviews on him that I was really looking forward to working with Alvaro. On the first call, Alvaro was very soft spoken and very nice on the phone. He came out to my house and measured my area and then left. I knew my home had about 250 square feet to get done but I was curious what he would measure the space out to be. With an email, turns out we have 330 s/f of space to do. I was surprised by that. So I called, emailed, and texted him saying that I think we have a smaller space bc I already had Lumber Liquidators out to measure & they said it was 250. I was really curious so had my husband measure & draw out the floor. He's an engineer so he enjoyed the exercise. After measuring everything himself he did find that we had about 260 s/f of floors to do. So Lumber Liquidators was right. Alvaro, after 20 years of doing this, measured our space wrong?? I just gave him the benefit of the doubt & thought well maybe he was in a hurry while at our house (he came late & I had a conference call to rush to), etc so maybe that's why he didn't measure the space out right. In addition, we had made an appointment to go buy wood together at a wholesaler in San Leandro. Well that day came & we never went. I don't quite remember what happened (I am super sleep deprived from having a new baby & this happened weeks ago - yes I keep giving him second and third chances so it's been WEEKS) but Alvaro was too busy & couldn't make it. I started to feel like just bc we have a small space he didn't want my business. I just felt like, if you feel our space is too small for you, just be upfront & say you only do xyz projects. Or bc your space is small, we have to charge an extra xzy. C'mon. Just be honest and upfront? Anyway so I had emailed my husband's Powerpoint drawing of the space & measurements as well as was calling & texting him about going to see wood together but he started to avoid me a bit. After I said I saw great reviews about him on Yelp and HomeAdvisor.com, he lo and behold calls me & was super duper nice. This was last week. Maybe he was afraid I would write a bad review of him. So we made an appointment to go get wood this past Wednesday, Sept 18, 2013. Well guess what??? It never happened! We made an appointment for 11am and he said he would put it in his appointment book and would be there 100%. Well Tuesday comes and he texts me 10am. I said I can't do 10am. I also said I couldn't do 11am bc something just came up. But i said, let me see if I can do 10am. I will find out & know more later tonight. Well he immediately introduces the idea to me that instead of going to a wholesaler in San Leandro to look at wood, that I should just go online & pick out the colors through my computer screen and that he would drop off samples to me on Friday! He said he had a job in Los Gatos & could easily swing by my house before going to Los Gatos. So I am not super happy with that but I wanted to work with him. I felt, ok fine. I'll just look on my computer screen & write out what I want & email you. I asked him for 5-7 samples and he said he could only get me 3. Three?? You mean I have to spend $2-3K and I only get to see 3 samples in real life?? Ok fine. I work with you. I work with you. So I said ok, I'll email you the samples I want. Guess what happens. Today is Friday. He was supposed to come by my house to drop off samples. Guess what? Never happened. He emails me at 7am the price list. That he did. He promised to do that & that he did do. He emails me the price list and says I'm too busy, I can't come today. WHAT??!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I am so sick of getting the run around from him. He treats my project like it's zero priority. You know what. If you feel my project is too small, tell me. If your company is too big & only goes after larger projects, tell me. Don't mess with me. Don't promise me things & never follow through. Don't make me wait weeks and weeks for something to happen and it never happening. I spent all these weeks being patient with him and waiting and waiting. I spent all these weeks looking forward to finally going to look at some hard wood, talking to him about the project, and picking everything out & it never happens. Mind you. I have been patient bc I wanted to work with him. But nope, he will not have our business. And I will tell everyone I know not to use him. Honestly I have no idea why he's been such a jerk. Every project is a project. Every business is business. You should treat each project like it's your last project. We had Lumber Liquidators out. Their wood is not good. Their installation team is not good. The guy who came to measure gave us attitude. We had Empire out. Their prices are ridiculously expensive even though their quality of wood is good and installation is good. But you will pay 3-4x with Empire. This is why I was so patient w Alvaro this whole time. read more

we contacted Rodriguez flooring on 7/15/19 scheduled an appointment for estimate to put in hardwood floors, appointment was for 7/16/19 waited for Alvaro for 1 hour he never showed up. We called several times finally got a call back, made another appointment for 7/17/19 , my girlfriend came to pick me up at my house at 10 minutes to 5:00 so i could be present during appointment, Alvaro called here at 5:00 appointment was between 5-6 we got to property at 5:10 he was gone already. we made several attempts to contact Alvaro he never called back!!' We brought in several companies for estimates on our hardwood floor job [in San Francisco], but ultimately went with Alvaro [Rodriguez] because he 1) came recommended, 2) had a very competitive rate, and 3) was able to accommodate our aggressive schedule. Alvaro's crew was tidy and paid close attention to the details. When I was unhappy with a couple of the joins between the boards, they cut those out and replaced them. On top of the quality installation, Alvaro worked with us to actually pick up our hardwood product on two separate trips (no charge). This greatly simplified installation. I am giving 5 stars for the "a man is only as good as his word" for the president of Allhardwood told me when I agreed to have them install new floors 5 years ago I could call him with any issue or question on the flooring . 5 years go by and I notice buckling in the kitchen and a mold stain by the bathroom toilet . Ends up that was the symptom the disease was leaking from the dishwasher and toilet ring . What did I know other than the flooring had issues . The President himself came within 24 hours pulled out the dishwasher and floorboard himself and we quickly arranged a plan to replace . Who does that anymore over a "little" thing like I notice buckling or darkening wood . That is 5 stars for man of his word and I live quite a distance from their location as well . Our new house had carpet on the stairs and the upstairs, hardwood floors downstairs except in the guest bedroom. We got several quotes for replacing all the carpets with hardwood. We went with Alvaro even though he wasn't the cheapest because his quote was straight-forward (no "if this then that" gotchas hidden) and because he really knew his stuff and asked all sorts of questions in each room to pin down what we wanted. Also, he is soft-spoken and kind and clearly takes pride in his work. He has every reason to take pride. We've been 100% happy with his work. First of all, the work was done absolutely on schedule. Second, for no extra cost he had a cleaning lady clean up all the sawdust and debris when he was done, repainted the baseboards along the walls so there wasn't an unpainted strip where the carpet had been, and installed screens on the windows (which had been in the garage) so he could leave the windows open for the floors to dry and air out without letting in dust and dirt. Finally, in every room there is evidence of his professionalism and good taste. In the bedroom he asked which direction the bed would face, and lined up the wood strips east-west to match. But in the adjoining library, the wood looked best lined up north-south. So between bedroom and library he put a diagonal strip to make a classy join between the two different layouts. Downstairs, he joined the new floor in the guest room to the existing wood floor in the rest of the downstairs, overlapping the new with the old and refinishing the downstairs wood floor at no extra cost, so that you can't tell where the old ends and the new begins. read more

Raj K. We have had Alvaro and his team at our home twice to get work done first on our floors and recently on your stairs and kitchen. The 1st job we had over for was to replace the laminate floor in our downstairs which is about ~1400 sq.ft of space. We bought the material from Lumber Liquidators and Alvaro and his work crew install the floors. Each day his crew arrived on time and performed event the last minutes changes without issue and on top of all that he quoted a very fair price for the job and completed the whole floor install in about 1 week. Alvaro was professional throughout and was good to work with. He also came a couple times during the installation to check on the work performed by his crew and discuss with us any concern we may have. Even more important, which we had some bucking issue with the floor about 1 year later He came by and visitedus and had his work crew repair the issue for no cost twice. Because of the good job he performed on the hardwood floor install we recently had him over to get our stairs redone with hardwood. Our house is about 30 years old so it still had the original stairs which were carpeted. Both the stairs and the carpeting we showing their age so we wanted to improve the look. Each day his crew came on time, too the trouble to prepare the work area and clean up after they were done for the day. While there was some damage to the drywall around the stair on on the floor during the tear down and install process all of that was fixed at the end. Since he was working our our stairs we asked if he could refinish our kitchen floor as a separate item. His did that work separately at a very good price. I would recommend him with hesitation if you want someone who has good personal integrity and does quality work at a very reasonable price. read more

Alvaro and his team did an outstanding job repairing and refinishing our master bedroom flooring. Our 1970's red oak flooring looks beautiful! We had severe buckling which needed to be addressed. Alvaro troubleshooted the root cause. When the flooring was originally installed (1970's), the nails were not engaged into the subfloor correctly. It was so bad they were able to remove at least 75% of the planks by hand! Alvaro did not just repair the buckling portion, but also reinstalled the "loose" boards. Alvaro not only provided us with a competitive bid, but he is also very conscious of adding cost to his jobs. We appreciate that he was able to save 90% of the original planks and charged us minimal for installing new baseboards. Alvaro refinished the wood floors in our living room and dining room and did a fantastic job! He came out to give me an estimate during the evening, at a time that was convenient to me. It was clear to me upon meeting him that he really knew how to refinish floors- he was detail oriented, a good communicator, friendly, and confident that he could do a great job on my floors. His bid was significantly lower than what large companies were charging. I decided to have him do the job. His crew moved my furniture out of the house and into my garage, which was a tremendous help to me. He agreed to add the refinishing of a small landing and 2 closets at no extra cost. They sanded down the floors, while carefully protecting my house from dust. Then, they were so kind as to put down 5 or so sample stains for me to see on my actual floor. They went even further to mix two colors in various proportions until the color was exactly what we wanted! They applied the stain and 3 coats of polyurethane. The floors are gorgeous!! A week later, after my rooms were painted, Alvaro came on a Saturday to move my furniture back into the house. They did touch up work to get a few small areas that I was concerned about just right. He even did an extra little job for me at no additional cost. He saw that I was going to place and tape down speaker wire around the tiles in front of my fireplace, covering up the nice new wood floor. He offered to cut out a channel around the tiles to place the speaker wire in, and then covered the channel with a custom cut wood moulding stained to match the floor. I now have the speaker wires where I want them in the living room without even seeing them taped down around the tiles in front of the fireplace as they had been in the past. Wow- what a fantastic business! They were on time, a great price, very responsible, detail oriented workers, and produced beautiful floors! I would highly recommend Alvaro and his crew! read more

It was all done in a week, when any other company out there told me that they would take at least two weeks! He removed all the carpet and vynil floors. They fixed all subfloors before they lay the new floors. They might miss something small here and there, but once you tell them they will fix it for you without issues. Both the boss Mr. Rodriquez and his team are very pleasant to work with. They even helped dump some of my old furniture and helped move other furniture to make room for installing new hardwood floor and did not ask for extra compensation. Alvaro was highly recommended by our agent when we bought our house and I can't say enough about his work and company. I had a floor refinish job I needed done. He told me when i had him cost out the job that he would take care of me and he sure did. First he bid very competitively (ie lower than anyone else), came on time when he said he would and did the job in one day less than what he said it would take. His team also painted all the baseboards to make sure all was exactly the way it was when he started. Then he went above and beyond by fixing damage on his time and dime caused by another company after he completed the job. And now he is coming back to do one more thing that I was concerned about but that is due to the nature of my floors and not his work. His crew is polite and knowledgable, and very hardworking. Good work and great customer service is hard to find in the Bay Area but this one is a gem. read more
