I was part of a party of 4 on a Saturday evening. The restaurant got increasingly busier (and louder) as we were there. Because of the crowd, service was uneven, but everyone was very nice. The chips and salsa that came out were pretty good (I say that as a Californian with major opinions on good tortilla chips). Two of my companions ordered the elote appetizer, but saucers were never brought out. That made for pretty messy eating at our table, though we tried to clean up as best we could. I ordered three avocado tacos on corn tortillas. They were really good with a great mix of flavors and textures. The avocados pieces had a thin, crisp crust, the interior soft and perfectly ripe. So good! The beans were pretty standard, but I really liked the small scoop of sweet rice. It was like a touch of dessert to freshen my mouth at the end. Our server apparently misunderstood our request for splitting the checks, as my bill was lumped in with a companion's, but I just paid him in cash to reimburse him so we could head on out. This place was pretty good but I do think there are other better Mexican restaurants in the cities. I think this is a great spot if you are wanting a bite to eat before bar hopping in West End, which is what we were doing. I ordered the Guavaijto (an NA drink) which was really good. For food I got carne asada skewers, which had good flavor but were a little chewy, and a cheese crisp, which was tasty and a lot bigger than I thought. Overall a good spot before a night out but expect to spend a pretty penny. read more

I recently had a great experience at Rojo with a group of 9! I'm not sure if I've ever been to this location before, but I had been to the old Southdale one many times before, and never been super impressed before this visit! One thing Rojo really gets right is large parties. I was so impressed how many larger groups they were handling at one time, and how seamless their space is set up for it. We celebrated a friend's birthday and it was a great atmosphere to talk and enjoy some drinks and food. I ordered the skinny marg as well as the corn chowder and small chopped salad. All were actually fantastic. I went in with low expectations and actually REALLY liked everything I got -- even though it was pretty simple, the flavors were fantastic. WORLDS BEST SALMON SALAD! I have been raving about Rojo's salmon salad for years, it is hands down my favorite meal of ALL TIME! The greens are always fresh well mixed and never wilty.. the tomato's are fresh and cut in a perfectly large slice, the Salmon melts in your mouth and is PERFECTLY seasoned and glazed! The AVOCADOS- omg they are literally buttery soft and delicious (I need to know where they source them from) and the Dressing... the Star of the Show- is delectable, the soy and sesame flavor is so unique and adds the perfect flavor tie the salmon, avocado, tomato and lettuce together for a perfect bite! The tortilla strips are a paid actor and I always ask for extra when I order bc I need one with every bite! I do not know why this place is carrying such a low rating. My experience was the complete opposite. There is metered street parking available within a reasonable distance. There is also a Cub grocery store and a shopping plaza nearby that I saw people parking at, but I am not sure if that is allowed or how tightly it is enforced. The restaurant has a nice patio area that wraps around the building, along its sidewalk. They also have a decent sized dining area with booths, tables and chairs. This may be a Mexican restaurant, but it serves a variety of food including burgers, ribs and salads. Of course they have your Mexican favs too such as enchiladas, burritos, tortas, chimichangas, and tacos. We had a group of 5 and was seated right away in the dining room. I opted to go with the meat loaf and a Rojo sangria to wash it down. It took about 15 minutes to et our food. The meatloaf had a Mexican twist to it and was very tasty and packed with flavor. I really liked it. The meatloaf came with some of the best rice that I have ever had. It had a hint of flavorful sweetness and I could not get enough of it. I wanted to get a bowl to take home. I also like the sangria. It was filled with fruit, was fresh and very savory. Our server was attentive and friendly. If you are looking for some Tex-Mex, I recommend giving this place a look. Rojo Mexican Grill *IS* a pretty fun, tasty, inexpensive spot for happy hour and a meal in the West End part of Saint Louis Park. Rojo *IS NOT,* however, anywhere near being an authentic Mexican restaurant. If you are looking for the former, you'll have a great time here. If you are looking for the latter, there are better choices in the area. We decided to have happy hour at Rojo before a movie. Service was great, we were seated promptly (although the host did seems bit put off that we wanted to sit in the shade instead of the sun), and our server was fairly attentive (although he did seem extremely busy). The food was also pretty good; again, this place is about as far from being "authentic" Mexican food as you can get, but for what it is, it's pretty good. We especially liked their dips/salsas: the "Trio" is a must order, and even the house salsa that comes with the chips is pretty good. Our plates were HUGE; we were expecting portions that were much smaller (especially at happy hour prices), so I'd recommend checking with your server if you don't want to end up with lots of leftovers. The drinks were pretty good, definitely strong enough, but also maybe a bit too sweet; we both got that headache you get when you have a super sugary cocktail, so keep that in mind before you order. All in all, this is a fairly solid happy hour spot in the "West End" area that's close to the movie theatre. read more

This is one of our go-tos for our girls happy hour get togethers! Conveniently located in the West End shopping center, you can park for free in any of the adjoining ramps. I recommend making reservations as it can get busy during happy hour. The free chips and salsa is a great touch! They have a nice ambiance with both indoor and outdoor patio seating. I've come here for several happy hours and just ordered drinks without much of a problem but we came here for dinner the other day and it was pretty disappointing from start to finish. We were the very first table to be seated in the back section (like 10 tables) and we ended up getting our food last, even after asking the server twice where our food was, and all she had to say was "I don't know where your food is, that's weird". Some tables even ate and left before we got our food! It's great that you get free chips and salsa to start but half of the chips were crumbles and you couldn't even dip into the salsa. Then I got the chimichanga and it was much much smaller than expected. It was stuffed full of meat but, that's probably why it was small, but then I have to get some beans, get some rice, cut a chunk of the burrito and try to eat it all together. I can't tell you how many times I have passed by Rojo while in the West End. Finally, we brunched here out on their patio on a Saturday afternoon. Great people watching by the way. Now, I don't know why I was super excited to try their Blackened fish tacos but I guess I was expecting Oceaniar level fish tacos and got disappointed real fast. I forgot this was a Tex- Mex restaurant but still had some expectations of more. We also shared the Chicken fajitas but this meal was not great either. The presentation was nice and I enjoyed the warm soft tacos but the meat lacked flavor and spice to carry the meal. I was expecting the sizzling fajita action you see as other establishments so when the meat came out it felt regular smeggler to me so I was bummed. I did like the beans and the assortment of sides. We visited Rojo before a movie and ended up visiting during their happy hour. The staff helped us find a seat in the crowded bar area. There were quite a few people enjoying the happy hour and it was a fun, lively atmosphere. We ordered some guacamole from the happy hour menu and added some margaritas. The waitress asked if we wanted them spicy, so my husband took her up on the offer. The guacamole was delicious - creamy and flavorful. They provided plenty of chips for the huge bowl of guacamole which was perfect. The margaritas were also pretty good - potent and not super sweet. We ended up ordering two, but if you're driving I would recommend only having one. Nothing on the happy hour menu sounded good to us for dinner, so we ordered from the main menu. I got the enchiladas with red and cheese sauce and my husband got the fish tacos. We waited a while for the food, ordered our second margaritas, and when the food hadn't come after 40 mins of waiting, we checked in with the waitress. She forgot plot put our food order in. While she tried to make up for it by rushing the order, it still took another 10 minutes and we were late for the movie. She apologized, but we were a little frustrated. The food was just ok. The enchilada was saved by the sauce, but the fish tacos were fishy and hard to eat. We received the bill quickly and were able to make the movie during previews. We ended up being charged for the jalapeño that was added to the margarita, which for us just added salt to the wound that was our experience. I can only guess that it might be service related, as it is commonly busy and the staff seems to be on the lighter side for the size of the restaurant/patio. Rojo has a fun vibe and fits perfectly in west end. The patio is a wonderful place to grab happy hour. I always get the same thing at any Mexican restaurant I visit - chicken enchilada. Hands down, this is the best I've ever had and it keeps me coming back. They make the enchiladas in a small cast iron pan. I also request that they make it as "hot/spicy" as possible. Some servers need a little more explanation than others, but I'm pretty sure that when its done right that they add habaneros for me. PAINFULLY DELICIOUS! Also... This place is the best! I believe this is the only Rojo location left and it is a real gem. It's located in The Shops at West End and has lots of seating inside, but it's super nice to sit outside on the patio when it's warm enough. I like that you can choose to sit in the dining room area or belly up to the bar where they offer dozens of tequilas and other spirits. The bar area also has high tops where there are lots of TVs and happy hour specials. I've been coming here for about 7 years and it's one of my go to restaurants for tacos and jumbo margaritas. And when I say jumbo, I mean this margarita was almost as big as my head. I got the carne asada tacos, which are my go to. My friend got the chicken chimichanga which was huge and overflowing with shredded chicken. Each dish came with a side of refried beans and rice. The rice is so yummy and has a hint of sweetness that pairs well with the savory beans. I would definitely recommend this place. The portions are big, the drinks are huge and the prices are reasonable. On a warmer day, I like to park in the ramp and walk around for hours shopping at West End, hit up a movie at the theater and then end up here for apps, drinks and complimentary chips and salsa. My first time here, Met girlfriends for Happy Hour and dinner. And WOW, was everything delicious! We each had the happy hour margarita and loved their glasses! Ordered the Shrimp & Corn Cheese crisp for $8.00, I loved it so much I ordered another one to bring home for my boyfirend. It was just as good but missing a lot of the toppings comparing to the first one we ordered, a bit disappointing. My girlfriend ordered the Avocado Egg Rolls after they were highly recommended and they came with some type of cilantro dipping sauce, she loved them. I ordered the shrimp taco's that came with the most delicious smokey tasting refried beans I have ever had. And the rice, WOW! Sweet rice, I cannot even describe the flavors in that rice but I swear I moaned with each bite. Rojo is my go to spot if I want some classic chips and salsa, tacos, and a margarita! Their chips are thin and not too salty, the salsa has a good kick without being overly spicy, and they're always fresh and ready for you right as you sit down at the table. The taco plates are an amazing value. For about $13 you get three tacos, rice, and beans. My favorites are the fish and shrimp tacos! And even though the tacos are the star, the rice and beans are not to be overlooked! The rice is slightly sweet and sticky, the perfect pairing with an acidic taco slaw, and the beans are creamy and a hearty bite to the plate. Regardless of what you order, I recommend starting with the elote "Cotija Grilled Corn" appetizer! I've come here on a couple occasions. I really love their food options. I tend to get the tacos and they're always my favorite. The sweet rice is super good! The shrimp tacos are my favorite. It was really busy but the food came quick for our table of 4. In the past, I've gotten a frozen margarita, and I asked my waiter for one, but he ended up bringing it on the rocks. He said "we aren't doing frozen ones right now". It was still really good, but I noticed the table behind me had a blended/frozen margarita. So that was a bit upsetting. He was busy, but wasn't super attentive and he ended up messing up my check at the end. He put my cousins tacos on my check, but since it was the same price as the shrimp tacos we didn't bother asking him to change it. We sat outside, and it was super nice. Located in the West End, Rojo provided me and my companion really good service. My server was attentive, not overly chatty, gave us space, but made sure we were taken care of. I ordered a taco dinner, with shrimp tacos, that came with a sweet rice and beans. I did not like the sweet rice.. LOL It has to be geared to a specific pallet. I do not have that pallet. I don't think rice should be sweet either, but I was open to trying it. Since I was aware I may not like it, I did not make a fuss about the rice. My server noticed I barely touched any of my food. I wasn't really a fan of the food at Rojo. My server took the entire meal off of our bill. I let her know I wasn't making a fuss or big deal and she simply said she knows and wanted me to enjoy what I did. I enjoyed my drinks, chips and salsa and my service. I did not enjoy the food, but I would come back to try other things on the menu, simply because I had such a good first experience.
