A+ for the food. F- for service. The owner actually called us back today after ordering delivery and told us that we should have TIPPED more! We are 2.2 miles from this place, they charged a delivery fee which we paid and we tipped 15% of total delivery. I can't believe this women had the gall to call us after delivery to say that. This is a husband and wife run eatery with inexpensive but honest food cooked to order. The cheese steak sub is very tasty as is the steak calzone. Run by very friendly people who appreciate their customers. They also have gyros, burgers, pizzas and spaghetti/meatballs, ice cream, etc., etc. Open until 3 or 4 AM every night! Order food downstairs and take it up to the dining room for eat-in, or if there's room eat it at the downstairs counter. There is no wait staff upstairs, just tables and seating. They are very busy and have a continuous stream of delivery orders, and it's only the two of them doing all the order-taking, cooking and checkout. They have very reasonable prices, probably why they're so busy. The quality of the food - healthful, honest cooking - is much higher than the prices they charge. I mean, $3 for a huge slice of pizza which is 1/4 of the whole pie! I know people have complained that they don't pick up the phone or it takes a while to get the food sometimes, but realize it's not because they're goofing off - they just get extremely busy. But they also stay open until 2-3 AM weeknights and 3-4 AM weekends, and do this 7 days a week! Amazing work-ethic. Bottom line is the food is good, the people are really nice, and the prices are low. Everything is cooked to order so it can take 15-20 minutes to cook the food, plus delivery time if you're getting it delivered. I had let so much time go between breakfast and lunch and was debating on heading back toward Alexandria from Bethesda before the rush hour, but was starving. I had been wanting to try East coast Pizza (yes yes I know, if it's not NY pizza it's not pizza). I found parking and was originally going to go to Pete's New Haven Pizza, but then after looking at the menu, just didn't feel like foofy pizza that day. Spotted this place across the street. Walked over and got this feeling of a place that Jerry Seinfeld and friend would come to. It was about 3:30pm, there were two cops there. A lady (one of the owners I think) was behind the glass and asked if what I wanted. I didn't feel like one of the pre-made pizzas so told her I wanted to order a small. She went and got the small size wire and said this is small. Thought probably this small young person couldn't it a small one by herself. I ordered one of their newer pizzas. The downstairs is real small, probably for those just wanted take and go, or pick up. Upstairs has a lot of seating and nice view of the neighborhood. Looks like they remodeled with a big flat screen. After about 10 mins my pizza was ready and the lady brought it up to me. It was piping hot. The ingredients were fresh, mushrooms jalepenos, sausage. I wasn't a fan of the crust, and the cheese could have been a little more melted. But over all not a bad experience. And for those of you curious. I left one slice, which I took with me. read more

I accidentally stumbled into Rome Pizza one evening when Pete's line was too long. It was a greasy spoon of a place, which never bothers me much. The pizza was better than expected. It's nothing trendy or special, but it doesn't have to be to be good. The wings were a disappointment, but I tend to be picky on that. What surprised me is that they are open VERY LATE night on the weekends. I've lived in the area for a while and have lamented the lack of late night food options. This will definitely be my go-to place after a long night out. Booeymonger up the street just wasn't cutting it. Also, they have ample seating in their upstairs room. Surprisingly good pizza, hot subs, and cheesesteaks (and I grew up Philly-area). I don't know why I feel it's surprising, maybe its just my general disdain for "new york style" pizza in DC (as opposed to Italy-style, where Two Amy's et al do a very fine job), but this place consistently serves up whole pizza pies and slices that are quite yummy. I think they only serve hot subs, but I've had several and they were all quite tasty too. The two co-owners are there -all- the time, from when they open around 11am until they close around 4am, and I haven't seen any other employees, so the service is very consistent and they are both extremely friendly. They serve ice cream, have lots of tables upstairs and a few people-watching seats downstairs, as well as a few umbrella'd outdoor tables along Wisconsin. Highly, highly recommended to eat in or take out. Pete's Apizza just opened up across the street and we sort of assumed Rome would lose the war ignominiously, but they have more than held their own. read more

I have lived in dc for years and I am just now discovering this place!! The menu has everything you want if you're looking for a kind of 'mom and pop' style pizza and sub spot. The food I had was great, exactly what I wanted, delicious and filling. The folks inside were very pleasant (I got my food to go), and the prices were cheap (especially for the friendship heights area). The exterior is very un-assuming, and inside is as expected of a take out type place. I will absolutely be ordering from this place again...and again! read more

I work about a block from this place so it's usually my go to lunch spot if I forget to bring lunch. They have great lunch specials where you can get pizza and a drink or a sub, chips and a drink for $6. I usually stick with the meatball sub or the chicken italiano sub--YUM! Their pizza is pretty decent--I just don't trust how long it's been sitting out in the window. The owners are a very nice couple. Since they're pretty much the staff, it might take them awhile to get your order ready so it's best to order before going. They have a large seating area upstairs with TV and a nice view of the street. I definitely prefer this place over Pete's across the street. If you're looking for a fast, tasty and cheap lunch that will hold you over until dinner--this is the place for you! read more

This place has been around for a couple years. It was a really novel addition at first, being the only food service establishment open until 3 or 4 in the morning. Their level of service dropped as soon as a competitor opened next door. To start off, they have no parking. If you're thinking of driving here between 11am and 6pm, forget it. They filled their old parking lot with grass, so unless you park during non restricted hours or walk in...it's going to waste your time getting here. If you do walk in, be prepared for some really mediocre service. There's always a woman working here. She's kind of nice, smiles; but I honestly can't understand a goddamn thing she says. This is probably why I've had several orders that weren't what I asked for. I've also witnessed other customers returning with food they didn't order. This leads me to believe they can't handle simple orders and the staff is incompetent. If you want to save yourself some grief and call ahead, be warned. The phone is rarely ever answered. And when it is, you'll still have problems placing your order. I enjoy supporting local businesses, but this one needs to go. I've been patient enough to give this place numerous chances, coming here a dozen times over two years. There's no redeeming convenience. If you really want to get some food in the middle of the night, go somewhere that's open 24 hours. read more

Today, while at work, I decided to order a delivered lunch, and to try some place other than Domino's or Armand's. Searching the Internet for another nearby restaurant that would deliver a steak and cheese sub, I happened upon Rome Pizza and Subs. My expectations for any meal of this type would be fairly forgiving, and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered a cheese-steak sub and an order of fries, and was happy with what was delivered. The sub was about what one might expect from a small pizza and sub joint, not overly stuffed, but well cooked and delivered promptly. The fries were particularly good. I note that the sandwich was not "overly -stuffed", and I mean with steak. Having said that and not necessarily expecting more, I could suggest that they be a little less skimpy with the condiments. I wanted tomato on the sub, and, while it WAS there, the two slices allowed were very thin and small. I'll make one other comment, and it might've made the difference between a three-star and a four-star rating. This place does not offer a crushed red pepper (hot pepper) relish for their subs. All they offered, when asked, were sliced jalapenos. I learned once, on a trip to California, that this type of "hot peppers" topping must really be an east coast-thing. It wasn't even offered in the Subway sandwich shop, where I ate in L.A. Anyway... I like hot peppers, the crushed, red pepper relish, that I've become used to. For me, that condiment can make or break a sub. So, I'm suggesting that, if Rome Pizza and Sub were to offer that topping, I'd probably give them another star. read more

The lady behind the counter was incredibly kind and patient with me as I scanned the entire appetizers list only to get a side of jalapeño poppers. More on this new obsession: they used a different type of cheese instead of cream cheese or any other variations I've encountered. They were prepared right in front of my salivating stare and listen Linda listen... I have been back twice this week and I am not even embarrassed. My 13 year old son's FAVORITE pizza place - and we like it too. We live a block away and Pete's Apizza shoppe is across the street from Rome. Nine times out of ten we choose the Italian pizza from Rome. The husband and wife team who own and run it are so kind and friendly. It's a neighborhood treasure. Yummy pizza and subs at a good price. Not a $5 pizza, but you get what you pay for! Rarely - and I do mean rarely - I've seen the shoppe closed. I think every blue moon or so they take a day off - no biggie - not end of the world - because they otherwise are ALWAYS there morning, noon and night until the wee hours of the morning - every day. Who works that hard these days. So give it a try. read more

I don't understand how this place has a decent rating. If I could give zero stars, I would! Worst food I have ever had! we ordered a Rome burger with fries, a supreme pizza, and a BBQ chicken pizza for delivery. The burger bun had MOLD on it! The burger itself was very dry. I had to stop eating the pizza because the crust was so tough it was hurting my mouth to chew. Overall there wasn't any flavor to anything. Food Was gross. The italian sub was full of mystery meats and smelled funny. They put on literally 3 pieces of lettuce thrown on the top and wrapped it upside down, so when I unwrapped it, most of it slid out of the soggy sub bun. The bacon cheeseburger my wife had was plain and boring, not real meat but a patty like you can buy at the store, and the bacon was quite fatty and overcooked. The ceasar salad was not even a ceasar, it was like a garden salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and mozzarella cheese with a ceasar dressing on the side. The fries were limp and cold. the only saving grace is that they ordered it within about 45 mins and after reading most reviews, I got lucky it came that quick. The manager needs to learn customer service 101. I had a delivery order from them from an online service. The order was screwed up. Not only did they refuse to help me figure out the problem, they told me that I was being rude and refused to help me, or honor the coupon I was trying to use. I had to have the online ordering service call the restaurant on my behalf since she refused to deal with me and she wouldnt even work with them! Ordered via Seamless.com, about 20 minutes after I ordered I received a phone call from a woman telling me that Seamless got the prices wrong and that I have to call Seamless. After a few minutes of trying to ask if my order was cancelled (received yes and no answers), if I had to order again (both yes and no answers again), and the woman yelling at me to just re-order with the restaurant, she told me to pay the driver $1.10 in cash and it would be settled. (What?!?!) Called Seamless and the rep very kindly cancelled my order and said she couldn't make heads or tails of what the woman was trying to do either. I've eaten pizza at all the fancy pizza places in DC and finally realized that what I was missing was REAL pizza -- the old fashioned kind I grew up with in NJ. I had seen the Rome Pizza & Subs while eating at Pete's Pizza across the street and had wondered how Rome had survived, since Pete's was always crowded and Rome's was not. So, I got carry out pizza at Rome's tonight -- just cheese pizza with extra cheese. The aroma filled my car all the way home and I knew I had made the right choice. Although NOT as greasy and messy as NJ pizza (take that as a positive or negative), the taste was the same. And the nice woman who works there put the pizza back in the oven to warm up since I got caught in traffic and was a little late in picking it up. She did that without asking and with a smile. This is NOT the greatest pizza in the world but it is completely enjoyable and the 2 of us ate the entire large pizza because we just didn't feel like stopping. I was really hoping this place would be better. The pizza was actually okay, nice thin and greasy, NY style. Disappointments: mozzarella sticks, veg sub, chicken parm, garlic bread. The subs were cold in the center, inc. the chicken. The mozz sticks werent very stringy and didn't taste...real. Take a bite into one and you could be left with only the battered exterior, with a white role of "cheese" in your mouth. My veg sub wasn't really cooked enough (the vegetables almost tasted raw), I don't even think the cheese was melted. In all fairness the veg wrap looked really good, although it was dripping with oil. read more
