We had the duck tacos, the shrimp carbonara flatbread, and split the fried chicken poutine. All great, with a front-row view of the folk walking Main St on Friday night. The only negative was the "fresh-made Georgia on my Mind" peach cake which we took home for a leisurely desert. Well the cake was okay, but the frosting was totally missing flavor. Was supposed to be a butter cream, we guess with peach flavoring based on the color, but it tasted like pure crisco with peach food coloring. What a disappointment. My wife and I had lunch here a few days ago as we stopped through Greenville. We did the lunch buffet of salad and soup. Salad offerings were a little limited, but everything was fresh and tasty. We also tried the soups and thought the shrimp bisque was good but nothing special. Roost is definitely my favorite restaurant in Greenville, and we live downtown and frequent all the restaurants often. The food is always excellent. Meals are prepared from fresh, local ingredients with interesting and unique blends of flavors. I've tried many entrees and have been impressed with every meal. The service is also great. The servers are knowledgeable, friendly but not too pushy. Food and drinks have always come out quickly. The prices are extremely reasonable, given the quality of food and service that are provided. Finally, the atmosphere is fantastic. In the springtime, the doors are open letting in the warm Southern air and in the Summer there is live music on the outdoor patio. The outdoor seating surrounded by a beautiful fountain is one of the best places to watch life in Greenville go by. Indoors is beautifully lit, with great spacing between tables and excellent ambiance. We've been here for brunch a few times, and the buffet is amazing! Fully stocked with tons of fresh fruit, meats, cheeses, eggs, salads and desserts. They also have a mimosa and bloody mary bar that is a lot of fun. A lot of people have referred to Roost as the Hyatt hotel restaurant. I understand that it technically is, but I've never felt like I'm sitting in a hotel lobby. Food was alright. The service was the WORST! Our waitress was probably new and didn't know the specials, but luckily we overheard a waiter telling the table beside us. Our appetizer came out but no utensils to eat with. We had to ask for them. We had to ask for refills on tea, I asked for a Cabernet Sauvignon but was brought a Chardonnay and it took a very long time for her to return so I could tell her. It kept going south from there. And it wasn't even busy! It's a shame because the restaurant looks good, has a great location but terrible service. I must add that this is my second time visiting and the same was true for my first visit, I just thought I would give them one more try. I won't give them a third try! Hire good help!!! read more

My husband and I took our friends from out of town here, it was our first time here as well.... We loved it. The ambiance is beautiful. We sat outside but the inside looks super classy and beautiful. The food was fresh, delicious and unique. I had short ribs with a chopped mushroom side. I finished with a pretzel cheesecake thing for desert and it was ridiculous. We stumbled upon this great little farm to table bar/restaurant last night and had a wonderful experience. I would not necessarily call it "fine dining" but everything we sampled was fresh, delicious and locally sourced when available. I have really tried to enjoy this place since the location and outdoor dining is attractive however it is a constant let down. The only thing you can order is a beer or a glass of wine because you at least know what you're getting. My husband, two granddaughters and I had the Sunday brunch at Roost today. What a surprise. I had no idea the brunch buffet would have so many items on it. Between the four of us I think every item was tasted. There was a plenty of fresh fruit along with a salad bar and breakfast pastries. Then there were the hot items, mashed potatoes, pork tenderloin, homemade meatloaf, bacon and eggs, just to name a few. We had outdoor seating and it was perfect. I really love Roost. I've always been a huge proponent of the local foods movement, and I love seeing restaurants commit so serving their community products from the region! The food is fresh and creative and the atmosphere is gorgeous. The attention to detail is glorious. I am always tempted to just steal all of their serving wear- even that is beautiful! I think the menu is great - I love the vegetarian pad thai and all of their appetizers. Sunday brunch is absolutely not to be missed - I've gone at least 6 times. The spread is delicious and, as always, committed to being local. The restaurant embodies southern values by buying from farmers and promoting their produce and meats. Using local foods is a not always easy, but you can taste the difference! Good Sunday brunch...they have most breakfast items and fried chicken, salad and a good dessert selection. $20 for adults and $10 for kids with those under 4 (I think) eating free. Only reason didn't give 5 stars was the service was very slow. Took awhile to get drinks and our bill and we split between another couple (their kids and ours) and auto gratuity was added to our bill (so glad the other couple caught that). read more

I've been to the Roost many times for lunch and dinner with friends. The items on the menu change seasonally so there is always something new and delicious to try. I love the lunchtime soup and salad bar. Awesome, but make sure you save room for dessert-- today it was Bourbon Pecan Pie, need I say more! I had the white pie and my boyfriend had the backyard burger. My food was great, but a bit overpriced. His burger was suppose to be medium well but came out medium rare. He took a bite and sent it back. The kitchen put his same burger back on the grill and brought it back to him 5 mins later. His cheese was burnt and rubbery, the sauces were still on the burger. He bit into it and then cut into it. It was unevenly cooked. I'm more disturbed that they put his partially eaten burger on the grill instead of just cooking him a fresh burger. For a $15 burger, we will not be back. Super disappointed. read more

I follow Chef Nicci Hughes and the photos of her specials always look great - so I finally had an opportunity to try one out! Pulled Chicken Tacos were the special and we both had them. WOW!! Perfect lunch portion and had a salad for our side. We sat by the water feature and the outside walls were pulled back - so we were outside (covered). A great experience!! Firstly, if it were possible to give no stars in every category, I would have done that. My wife and I chose Roost for Thanksgiving lunch based off the menu available online, which went out of its' way to emphasize the freshness, local ingredients and food quality of the items at Roost. From the descriptions on the menu we decided to book. The error of this decision was made almost immediately apparent to us. We arrived at 2:45 for our reservation. There was no one else waiting and two hostesses on duty, neither of whom greeted us. We had to approach and introduce ourselves before we were acknowledged. Upon being seated the hostess led us through the half-empty dining room to sit us on the atrium. We were given a tiny two-top table which was slammed into the corner railing overlooking the lobby. The hostess attempted to 'enhance' this setup by dragging the table a few inches forward, not bothering to straighten it, then dropping our drink menus and walking away. Because she had moved the table, the lamp that was bolted into the floor was directly above my wife's head, making it impossible for her to sit or stand comfortably. Once our server, and I use the term very loosely, arrived, the true rottenness of Roost began to be apparent. The server did not greet us, introduce himself or say anything at all other than, 'You want something to drink?' After he returned with out drinks he stared at us blankly as we asked about the buffet. he finally managed to stutter something about a build your own omelet out, then wandered away, never to be seen when needed again. Finally, after all these stellar performances, we got to the food. And Good God was it horrible. The turkey was the only edible thing on the buffet, though I imagine that given time Roost could have ruined it as well. All of the dip items were old, cold and obviously prepackaged or frozen products. There was no sign of the supposed 'freshness' or 'local cuisine' on Thanksgiving. The worst offender was the 'prime rib' which was so well done the meat was gray and was actually beginning to separate from the fat. When we both asked the carver for a slice, she first attempted to serve us the leavings of the old roast, which was mostly fat, gristle and grease, even though there was a 'fresh' loin right beside her. When asked if I could get a piece that was medium, she said no because it had been in the hot box for hours already, which was glaringly apparent. I'm going to wrap this up because the memory of this meal is making me nauseous, but a final few things - no lemons at the seafood bar, surly, piss poor service and we never saw, were approached by or spoke with any management at all during out visit. We will never be back to Roost and we recommend you not waste your time or money there yourself. read more

Food: It was very disappointing. We have eaten here before when it had a different chef. Not worth the money. Spent over $200 on dinner mine was extremely salty. My daughter had the same thing and hers was not salty so it was inconsistent. There was very little creativity with the food. (The head chef doesn't work on Friday nights) Also no selection. Reusing the same ingredients over and over but not in unique ways. When we complained to management we were told that the meal would be comped and that never happened. Service: The waitress was friendly but untrained. No knowledge of the specialty drinks. I was allergic to a key ingredient that was in the drink I was going to order. Luckily I spoke to the bartender and was told what was in there. The drinks were good only reason the restaurant got one star. The waitress did not clear any dishes. Luckily a kind bus person asked if she could clear some of the dishes. Another server tried to clear a plate that I was still eating from but ironically not any of the other dishes. Sad to say I will never eat here or recommend it as it was a waste of money!!! read more

My Valentine's Day celebration was made more special by a visit to this relatively new restaurant, which is conveniently attached to the Hyatt in downtown Greenville. My partner ordered their chicken chili soup as a starter and the shrimp and grits as a meal; meanwhile, I had their Ceasar salad with the bacon-wrapped meatloaf. Although the Ceasar salad turned out a bit dry at first (I had to ask for extra salad dressing), I'm happy to report that we enjoyed our meal overall. Everything was fresh and tasty. Their special holiday menu was a bit too high for me (at $60 per person); however, since I ordered from their regular menu, it wasn't too bad. I would best describe their food as upscale Southern cuisine/comfort food with main entrees ranging from $18-30. If you're searching for cheaper fare, I heard they offer a "harvest table lunch buffet" for only $10. Also, if it's your first time here, I suggest asking your waiter what they recommend - or ask them what their most popular dishes are; you likely won't go wrong. As for the service, we were fortunate to be seated immediately since we had made an online reservation. The restaurant was buzzing that evening with lots of couples and groups going out to celebrate. Despite the busy evening, we received excellent service from our waitress, who was always attentive and helpful. Our drinks were refilled regularly and our dishes cleared in a timely manner. The only (minor) disappointment was that I didn't get a rose at the end of the evening since they were giving away roses to some diners that evening. I'm not sure why we didn't get one. Anyhow...the ambiance was romantic enough. Not old-fashioned romantic, mind you. This restaurant oozes a contemporary cool vibe without any hint of being snooty. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience for me dining at Roost - and would recommend other Yelpers to give it a try. read more
