Chicken salad burst from the sourdough bread. Generous portion. The soup was good but not amazing. Nice that it did not need any additional spicing. For dessert we had Marionberry Pie. Nicely topped with whipped cream. Noted the butter crust. Nice and flaky. Interior of this restaurant is warm and super inviting. A perfect Sunday breakfast or afternoon meal stop. I got a French Silk pie from Rooster's for Father's Day, and it was the worst pie I have ever had. The crust is definitely not homemade. It was not a golden brown, and had like artificial taste. The filling was so bland and the crust overpowered the pie. No taste of chocolate whatsoever and it didn't have that dark chocolate color. Even the whipped cream topping was bland. I would've been better off making my own pie. It was not worth the $15.99. read more

During our pit-stop in Medford on our way up to Seattle, I yelped for a place to eat -- I was feeling breakfast-y, so two places came up in my search for American Diners: The Black Bear Diner and Rooster'S (yes, with a capital S.). Black Bear Diner apparently is a chain (according to my friend), so we went with the Mom N' Pop choice. And they did not disappoint. The most outstanding thing here is the: SERVICE. ---SERVICE--- Debbie (I think that was our waitresses name) was ridiculously friendly and charming from the very beginning -- she addressed each of us "pumpkin/dear" the entire time while suggesting all of her favorites. She was brimming with smiles and energy, and you could tell she loved loved lovedddddd being alive! Such a sweet lady. EXACTLY how mom' n' pop diner service should be! Like your mom! --FOOD-- Sad to say, we missed the breakfast period. (We got there around 1pm...arrived in Medford around 5am..didn't wake up till 11pm..yea..haha..it was still breakfast time for us!), so we just had lunch. But, lunch wasn't shabby. We ordered the following: 1) Nutty Chicken Salad Sandwich + Salad Combo: By far the best chicken salad sandwich I've ever had! The chicken they use is shredded, not chunky, and so moist. Lots of excitement going on in the sandwich ranging from almonds, raisins, celery, mayo, etc. Very huge portion of chicken salad stuffed between two slices of incredibly moist, thick home-made whole wheat bread. (I was a lil' hesitant to order my sandwich on wheat bread at first because I was afraid it wouldn't be exciting enough..but this was Debbie's "favorite" bread, so I went with it) -- and my goodness -- always agree with the waitresses' recommendation! That bread was sooooooooooo good -- the crust had lots of great lil seeds/grains on it that added to the texture/crunch of the crust as well. My half-sandwich also came with a side-salad -- which wasn't anything special, but was a good way of getting some veggies in. 2) Chicken Dumpling Soup (that came with my friend's Nutty sandwich; we ordered the same thing): Not as piping hot as I had hoped it to be, but nice and thick - seasoned very well with lots of chicken shreds, dumplings, and root veggies. So comforting. 3) Chicken Strips + Fries: I didn't try my friend's chicken strips, but...tried their seasoned fries and...you know...for a place in the middle of no-where...they make damn good fries! Served very very fresh, crunchy, and very tasty! 4) Cherry Pie: How can you say no to pie...when the first thing you see when you walk in is PIE. They had 12 different home-made pies you could choose from, and we went with my friend's fav. Debbie heated it slightly for us, and ooo...that hits the sweet spot. Tangy, sweet, big juicy cherries enveloped in a flaky, warm crust. All it needed was a good scoop of chocolate ice cream..and it woulda been perfect...but...we held ourselves back...(were gonna venture to Portland's famous Voodoo Doughnuts later..). ---PRICE--- 3 entree's + 1 dessert + 1 cup of hot coca = just under $32. No tax. (Yay Oregon!). Sweet deal! --AMBIANCE--- Besides the Roosters...EVERYWHERE!, the place is kinda like a cabin turned into a restaurant. Lots of booths sittings, and lots of "usual" customers. I went with Miss Gail N. here for some good ol' Medford food. My stomach was growling at me ever since I woke up, so I had a full order of the nutty chicken salad sandwich + chicken dumpling soup. The sandwich (with wheat bread, they give you a choice) looked totally delicious and it was for the first half of the sandwich. There's bacon, shredded chicken, greens, nuts, and LOTS of mayo. I'm not much of a mayo-kind-of-girl, so at the end of the sandwich I was sick of it. (See pictures) With that said, it wasn't soggy. The sandwich is definitely fresh--the bread is nice and thick--and worth a try, but maybe you shouldn't get the whole order unless you're really hungry. Chicken dumpling soup isn't something to rave about. When I read "dumpling" I automatically thought Asian dumplings but of course...I shouldn't have. The broth is ok, but the "dumplings" were doughy. My other friend got the chicken strips and fries. It looked super fresh. I reallllly wanted to try it but all I got were fries hahahah! Definitely fresh and crunchy, just the way I like my fries. Service is probably the best thing here. We were seated and served quickly and our lovely server was really nice. This is my favorite place to go while in Medford. Though I am a SoCal native, I have family in Gold Hill and I make frequent trips to Medford to grace Roosters for their fantastic pie and food! The chicken pot pie is a generous slice filled with veggies and large pieces of white meat chicken. The pairing of the pie with herbed, dark spring mix salad is a delight to the palette. Any pie flavor is delicious. Pick something you haven't had before and enjoy! Annette, the owner and her daughter are both engaging and friendly. This is a MUST stop breakfast/lunch place on your visit to Medford. The coffee refills are frequent and the atmosphere is quiet and peacefully. (Also free wifi. And how can we say no to free wifi?) I love when I get to taste the three things that Yelp recommends! I was happy that I checked in at this place because it gives you a free slice of pie which was a delicious Marionberry cream cheese heaven. I love that the coffee cake is free. I got the nutty chicken sandwich which was delicious and the bacon was perfectly crisp. It was very interesting to have whole chunks of nuts in the sandwich. It was even really good left-over. The waitress was absolutely fantastic, and went above and beyond for service. What I noticed about this place was it was extremely quiet when we arrived. it was decorated with a lot of nostalgic, vintage decor. I would definitely return next time I am visiting! read more

First... the cinnamon roles are amazing, the best I've had. Many restaurants in Southern Oregon claim to have the best cinnamon roles, but Rooster's really does. The pie is pretty good here too, much better than Shari's or Becky's. As far as the other food goes, *insert shrug emoji*. It's standard diner food. Not much flavor, a little too pricey, and leaves you feeling a little lacking. Could be we ordered the wrong breakfast items? The building and atmosphere are pretty dated too. What do you do when one adventurous eater coworker says, "Can we go for Thai? " ( head buried in I-Phone looking for a good one) this on our lunch break from day one of a conference. And the other coworker snips "can't you choose anything NORMAL?" (insert my opinion here, how could Thai not be normal? you're from Portland!) It also had several unbussed tables. The server was cheerful and speedy. Nothing was wrong with the service. Pickymiss coworker chose breakfast, cinnamon roll french toast and was happy. Thai seeking, dejected coworker got chicken pot pie, which she didn't like, and a salad, which she didn't like. I don't think she would have liked anything, but the pot pie didn't look good to me. It was flat. and covered with tan gravy. I got a nutty chicken salad sandwich and sweet potato fries. It was all good. Very filling.Nice grainy bread and crispy non iceberg lettiuce for the sandwich. Good iced tea, too. Driving coworker had chicken and dumpling soup and a salad, and a roll. She said the roll and the soup were extra good. She took pie home for later, which she said was terrible. Really enjoyed our brunch here. Ordered the chicken fried steak which was really good -- not over seasoned, crispy but tender in the middle. It was a LOT so I gave half to my husband while he worked on his French toast combo which he really liked. Overall really comforting home style cooking food-- would totally come back if were in the area again. The decor is also really cute and quaint - feels like you're in someone's home almost with all the pictures frames and wooden furniture. Nom, nom, nom.... excuse me while I scarf this food down! This place does not disappoint. I lived here in Medford for over a year, and it wasn't until I left that I ever wanted to try this place. It doesn't seem like much from the outside, just another hole in the wall diner or greasy spoon. The inside is nothing special either, unless you like roosters... they are everywhere! No wonder they call this place after the annoying alarmclock of a bird. When you step inside, you feel like you have just traveled back in time to the 70's. The only thing missing was bell-bottoms. I wasn't sure what to order, so I went for my staple breakfast of pancakes. The waitress was friendly, and attentive. She brought out my order very quickly. She apologized for taking so long. I was like really? Its only been a minute! The pancakes were the size of dinner plates! That was the first thing that made this a great experience. The sausage patties were seasoned just right. Soooooo good! The eggs had butter in them! Yum yummy yum! The only reason this place doesn't get five stars, is the decor needs updating. The 70's just called and they want their wood paneling back! I had the veggie benedict with home fries and coffee. Fresh spinach, tomato and eggs on English muffin. It was quite good but a bit bland. I was concerned the eggs might have some runny white but they didn't. I think 30 seconds less on the cook time since the yolks were just barely oozing. The spinach was perfectly cooked! Walked in, and fell in love with the place. Greeted at the front door by the owner, and led right to a cute booth. We were coming off a backpacking trip, and craving some chicken fried steak at a diner. Saw they have cinnamon rolls(!!) as a side to the steak, and couldn't have been more excited. This place is authentic, homey, and so well done. Be sure to read the jokes in the reader while you wait for your food, they're a hoot. We decided to split an order and it was the right call, the portions are huge!! Never have I been so grateful to pay a split plate fee. The cinnamon roll came out, and our jaws dropped. It was beyond a doubt, the biggest cinnamon roll I had ever seen. Then, our mouths full of delicious homemade cinnamon roll, the food came out. I swear they made us two plate of food instead of just splitting ours. The chicken fried steak was incredible! The gravy rich and peppery, the scrambled eggs perfectly cooked.
