I have been to Root times. Love the vibe: great service, ample beers on tap and vegan options is nice, however I find many of the menu options bland. I'd recommend sticking to the staples versus the specials.

As a vegan I love to try and support vegan restaurants wherever I go. Root was a little disappointing. The service was good as was the beer selection. The restaurant and open kitchen were very clean. What lacked for me was the food. The cooking was rushed, undercooked and under seasoned. A few extra minutes of care and seasoning would have made the food 5 star and fabulous. I like the menu ideas and the fact that it's new and inventive every week. I just wish the execution of the dishes we had were better. The world needs more great vegan restaurants, please just give your dishes a little more love and care that they deserve and you have a solid winner here.

Meat eater here! Omg! The food here is crafted with intent. Also great libations to boot. Our servers were excellent the were knowledgeable and attentive. The resturant has a great vibe...industrial hip with a nice bar options. This restaurant met my vegetarian requirement, so we stopped by. Met Rob the executive chef, after the meal I gave the thumbs up from the meat eater. His reply was, 'flavor is flavor!' And I have to admit he brings the flavor! We had the chili, it was outstanding if you didn't know it was vegetarian it would stop you in your tracks! We had the eggplant sandwich, what a subtle surprise it contained....well you've gotta try it. My vegetarian loved the meat ball falafel gyro...impressive followed by the carrot cake...delightful! Definitely will be back!

This restaurant is truly captivating!! Set us as a restaurant / bar / meeting place / hang out ~ they truly took an innovative approach to dining! It's an all encompassing social space!! Their menu is divine! Plant based - vegetarian, all the way! It was refreshing to have a spot that my daughter had several options and not just fries or beyond burger option! Staff ~ very personable and engaging!! Felt like we had been going to their establishment for years!! Highly recommend- even if you are not plant based, their Big Mic is exactly a Big Mac - try them for your next meatless Monday or whatever!!

I've never been overly impressed with this place. The food has always been amiss for me, but I like the vibe and each time I come back I'm hoping this time will be different. Sadly, this past time was the nail in the coffin. Three words - canned green beans. Canned green beans mixed with fresh green beans? I'm hoping the reason was because they ran out of fresh green beans. The dish was Cauliflower Tomato Curry, but the curry was missing. There was a faint aftertaste of curry, but I only noticed it because I was searching for it. The tofu was slightly under cooked, barely crispy on the outside. My husband also had a tofu dish and was equally underwhelmed. He had the same mix of canned and fresh green beans and under cooked tofu. The tomato and peppers added flavor to my tofu, unfortunately not the same for my husband. His tofu had a slight crisp, but was completely flavorless. Zero seasoning.

Nice to have a vegan restaurant around. Would love to see more consistency in food and service. We had gone here just over a year ago and though I did not write a review then I was more impressed than I was this time. Four of us arrived for a late night dinner. The restaurant was nearly empty, though they sat us by the window when it is cold out, which was a bit strange. Let's just say our waiter apparently was enjoying himself that night. He was obviously out of it. He didn't mention any specials or that there were things they were out of. Their menu isn't huge so it would be nice to know upfront. We were planning on ordering some seitan wings since two of our group had never had them. They were out of them. We picked a different appetizer to try. We got a sweet and sour cauliflower. It was okay, but I felt the portion was a bit small and the dish overall lacked flavor. Certain bits had more sauce and it was better. I ordered the chickpea and dumplings. The dumplings were essentially gnocchi. It was a bit bland. Once I added salt and pepper it was better. It still wasn't anything I was blown away by. My boyfriend ordered the shepherd's pie. Again, this dish needed some salt and pepper added. In my opinion I felt the dish was lackluster. Shepherd's pie should be comfort food. It should be rich and hearty and filling and this wasn't. The sauce lacked the richness. Also I felt it really could have benefitted from lentils or chickpeas or some sort of protein to make the dish heartier. The vegetable sides were Brussel sprouts, which I love normally. These were just ok. One of our friends ordered the mushroom "scallops" and she seemed the most pleased of anyone with her food. I think probably Root is just hit and miss based on when you go and what you order.

Really good Vegan food! The chefs and talent behind the menu is worth tasting. The new 2018 menu just rolled out, but I ate off the "favorites" menu, which included famous bites such as the "big mic" (Vegan Big Mac) and other likes the "KFC bowl" vegan tribute to KFC. I happen to choose the "Jackfruit cake" with a side of homemade vegan Mac and cheese as well as fresh seasoned Brussels sprouts. The taste on the Mac n cheese was bomb! The jackfruit cake Which resembles a crab cake, was well done too, not fishy or anything just well done. Let's not forgot about the hand picked vegan brews and bar, and the Coffee Ale I had! Sooo good and unique, As well as the green apple hard cider. Decor: chill and raw, with cool colors and a kitchen you can fully see. Vegans: Go Here! Vegetarians: Your gonna love it! Veggie options too mixed In. Meat eaters: your about to fall in love. There's more I want to try like the handmade Vegan / German pizza and the wing selection....Til my next visit in Lancaster, PA... :)

Amazing food and people! Their barbecue saitan and the burger/fries pictured below was great! Never was a fan of tofu but theirs changed my whole perspective, 100% recommend.

I want to support a vegan restaurant in Lancaster but Root makes it hard. I've been there twice and had some good dishes, but also some flubs. The service has always been good. On our first visit, we mistakenly ordered too many items with their cream sauce, a sort of vegan bechamel. Sometimes that can happen at a vegan place--you order what you think are 5 different items and they all use the same kind of fake meat, for example. The problem, though, is that not only do a few items share some variation of that sauce, but it's also just not that good. Pasty and gloopy come to mind. It strikes me as the kind of thing that was good when the original chef designed the menu and then turned into something else over time. The ravioli were okay, but they run out (our second visit); the coconut curry ramen was just okay. Not gross but definitely not something you fall in love with. Our second visit was the day before Christmas Eve and I think they had underestimated the number of vegans and their families who like to go out to eat before the holidays. They were out of many items, including all dessert. We got the arugula salad but it wasn't as good as the first visit. After being told that a few entrees were unavailable, we settled on the reuben and the Big Mic. It's hard to make a bad vegan reuben but Root succeeded. The bread wasn't grilled and the sandwich in no way resembled the comfort food classic. The Big Mic was just awful, way too much of the seitan patties and in no way resembled its fast-food namesake. Even the fries were meh. I've not tried the pizza but our table neighbors had a couple and it looked uninspired, and they ended up taking most of theirs home. The space is good, the servers are efficient and friendly, but I think they need to close for a couple of weeks to reevaluate their menu, or their regular business is going to drop off. read more

LOVE this place... lots of gluten free options. My non-vegan husband loves this place, too! My only suggestion to Root: create a unique cocktail menu for guests. With a food menu as wonderful, fresh and unique as yours- you should offer an amazing unique and fresh cocktail menu :) The food is always amazing and service is great! read more

SO GOOD!! My friend and I went for dinner tonight and couldn't have been happier with the food and service. Monica is so genuinely kind and helpful. I got the cornbread tofu (a special), my friend got the avocado reuben, and we split the BLT crostini. Wow. Over the years all of my vegan friends have suggested this place to me, tonight I finally went. Awful. It took us 40 mins to get our food and the people that came in after us got served their food before us....? The food was definitely not worth the price, not that it was overpriced, but you can make better vegan food at home. $10 for 4 grease drenched Pierogies sucked. The vegan Big Mac? Very bad. The faux meat was more in the vein of fake sausage or something. Service sucked as well. I know it's a small business but we only got our seats, our drinks, 30 mins of nothing, no refills on our drinks, no one even came to check up on this. The most disappointed I've felt about any restaurant ever read more

Our first time ordering takeout was on a trip to Lancaster a few days ago and the food was outstanding. Real vegan with good choices of food and ingredients. Plenty of Gluten Free options. Customer service was fantastic. Our order was ready and waiting for us when we got there, and they had everything right. read more

This was our second time at Root. It is a safe place for us vegans to find a good meal! We went for a late lunch on a Saturday and we were seated right away. The menu is quite extensive but we decided on The Cuban and a German Pizza. The pizza was a special menu item. It had mashed potato, sauerkraut, seitan and a mustard type sauce on a homemade sour dough crust. My husband said it was fantastic! My Cuban was also very good and the fries were nice and crispy. The only negative was that there was no dessert available. Apparently they ran out the night before. That is really sad because as vegans it is RARE when we actually can get a dessert when out for a meal. While we were there 4 other parties asked for dessert too. We will definitely go back when in the area. read more

I was able to get here for dinner tonight. The staff was super helpful and friendly. I was welcomed and they have open seating, so you can pick your own table or the bar. I had Buffalo Tofu, ATL sandwich and a coffee cake dessert for my meal. The tofu Buffalo bites came with fresh carrots and Ranch. The ATL was a great sandwich with a very refreshing spaghetti squash salad. The ATL was a recommendation and would get it again. read more

We absolutely love coming to Root! They are our go-to vegan restaurant when we are in Lancaster. We have always had excellent food and service there. We also recently enjoyed a fundraiser brunch event there. I also appreciate that they support other local businesses and the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary. read more

Awful. I ordered ramen and it was over cooked soggy noodles in a box with some veggies on top with a container of broth that amounted to about three drops worth. It was barely enough to get the veggies wet. My girlfriend ordered stew and it was veggies and a tiny bit of rice in a container. Not a stew or anything just a container of rice and vegetables. We had to order some other food somewhere else because it was so bad. read more

You might not think of a vegan pub as innovative, but it truly is for this area and long overdue. Outside Philly, there is just nothing like it I can think of in PA. I am so grateful to the owners for making this happen. We had followed their progress for months and were so delighted to see them finally open. The environment is casual but welcoming and stylish, a former brewery with a glass front, exposed brick walls, a front bar/dining area, more seating space in the back, and an elevated open kitchen. At every turn, we found staff to be friendly and professional. We did not have to wait long for food or drinks, even though it was busy on a weekday night. The bar has TVs, but they don't take over the space like they do in some places. Go ahead and seat yourself and then begin the torture of trying to decide. The menu is large and packed with comfort food favorites such as pierogies, mac & cheese, pizza, pub fries, pot pie, egg rolls, and sliders, done with sophisticated twists to make them special. We were full after our appetizers (but that didn't stop us); the portions are large for the low prices. Drinks are a little more expensive, but I was excited to see a non-animal bar menu, quite educational since there were some on there (like McManis wines) I had no idea were vegan. I hear the menu will be changing soon, but I didn't really see a need for it and am hoping to work my way through, trying every dish. Our favorite was the German pizza with sauerkraut, sausage, and mashed potatoes. Absolutely cannot wait to try the brunch, another sorely needed option for many miles. No desserts at this time, but that will probably be coming, our server said. The crowd was all ages but tended toward the younger, which makes sense because the Millennials are remarkable in their compassion for animals and the environment in a way previous generations don't seem to be. I will be bringing all my friends here, since you will love the food no matter what your dietary ethos is. read more

6:30 Saturday February 16th. Came for a late Valentine's Day since it was our first escape from work. Attempted to make a reservation the week prior but was told that they don't accept reservations under 6 people and that there would be absolutely no problem grabbing a table around 7:00 PM. I also told the gentleman that we were coming from over an hour away. Flash forward, entered Roots to find 5 parties of 2 waiting, no staff giving us updates regarding wait times and seven or eight tables in the back with the chairs on top of them. Eventually the waitress came out to inform all of us that "it would be a long wait". We won't try to go to Roots again. read more

Nice, welcoming vegan restaurant located in downtown Lancaster area. We're (family of 5 with 3 kids under 10) from out of town and specifically chose this place because one of my daughters is a vegetarian. Visit was on a Friday night (12/27) at about 5:30. Upon arrival, the place was mostly empty. By the time we finished our meal, there was only 1 empty table. The entrees were absolutely fantastic. The deserts were so-so. All in all, we were all very pleased and would definitely recommend to anyone around. read more

First time here while visiting relatives in the area. I had the Italian wrap. I was surprised at the small size of the sandwich, appeared to be on a smaller size flour tortilla, not the large kind you usually get eating out. Although the flavor was good, there wasn't enough filling inside even for this small wrap size. Not a good value for the price, $10.60. It did come with fries though which were good as well. read more

This place is absolutely amazing! I had no idea this was a vegan restaurant when we happened to walk in for a drink. I wound up ordering a couple delicious seitan tostadas. While I did have to pull some of the jalapeños because it got a little hot, the flavors were amazing. The bartender happened to be one of the owners and he was extremely friendly and helpful. I have to say, I really enjoyed my first taste of Vegan food. read more

Really disappointed in this place. Was so excited to try it out with my boyfriend for date night and it took 40 minutes for us to get our food. Once we got our food I was even more disappointed. I ordered the pierogis and it was definitely not enough to call a meal. It was also covered in grease. Our waiter never came back to ask us if everything was okay and if we needed anything. Very unimpressed with this place read more

So I've been to Root numerous times & I've had a positive experience each visit. The service is friendly. The food is good. I'm an omnivore but a former vegetarian & bring my vegetarian friends here. The menu is definitely fun, especially if you're a vegetarian who is unaware of how to make their own seitan or "meats". I really enjoy the atmosphere, the fact that they serve good brews. A few things can be improved upon (like the unwashed veggies as mentioned in former reviews) but overall this is a decent eatery. read more

Happy with the decor, happy with the service, happy with the quantity of food, happy with the friendliness of the servers and the person who took the order. Happy with the quality of food, and the "mozzarella" sticks are very good, if albeit a bit oily. So, truly, after worrying about the negative reviews, I was very surprised and happy with the food. And yes, one of the reviewers are right, they do need to ease up a bit on the salt! Haha. read more

Giving One Star only for promoting the term Vegan and offering and emergency option for a quick, cruelty free bite to eat. Tried this place two times and each visit the food was underwhelming. The beer was good, but we felt silly for spending what we did when we should have bought bread, Tofurky slices, iceberg lettuce, and a six-pack of Victory from the supermarket. Will not be returning as the "Sports" TVs were proudly displaying horse racing. The wait staff turned off the TV, but no apology and clearly no logical understanding that some vegan customers may be there for cruelty free reasons versus a craving for Tofurky sandwiches and undercooked French fries. read more

Such a cool vibe here! The wings are incredible. Cuban bites were good, but I probably wouldn't get them again. I got the Osso Bucco for my entree and it was good. Tasted light and healthy, but also filling. My (non-vegan) boyfriend liked the avocado Reuben a lot. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Overall a pleasant experience! read more

Wow!!! This place is AMAZING! What a gem! Our server was enthusiastic, kind, bubbly and very knowledgeable about the menu and the restaurant. The food was perfect! My mom and I shared the Italian wrap with fries and the seafood mushrooms . The Italian wrap had very fresh ingredients that blended together so tastefully. We both LOVED IT! The fries were cut very large and were cooked perfectly, with just a bit of a crunch and soft inside with a light sprinkle of salt. The seafood mushrooms!!! Oh my!!! They almost tasted cheesy! Super delicious! The service was exceptional and the vibe with the decor was trendy and cool. I drove over an hour for this restaurant and I'll definitely do it again! read more

The food is mostly bland and not packed with flavor as it should be. They change the menu way too much and have no consistency with what they offer. Their French fries were good when I went, but that's the only thing I can honestly say I liked. Service is horribly slow even when they aren't busy, and the wait times for the food are kind of ridiculous too. Overall, I'd rather cook up an amazing meal at home then splurge on borderline expensive mediocre food/service. read more

Giving five just because they're here, open and have a creative as heck menu! The food was superb! The jalapeño corn chowder this week could have used more jalapeño and corn, less potatoes, but we love spicy! So others might not think the same. The gyro was delicious, the fries okay. The cake with apple and caramel was not right. It was a really good cake, but I did not taste apple or caramel. My darling said he tasted maybe Granny Smith in there. But they did not charge for the cake, so all is good! Awesome server too! We love trying veg places! read more

Stopped by today for some takeout and it was delish! We are moving out west and went back to Lancaster to drive around and reminisce. Since Root is one of a few Vegan restaurants and a favorite of ours over the years, we had to order!!!! Due to Covid-19 they have a limited menu and curbside pickup. I had the Ricotta Pasta, so delicious and a HUGE portion. My husband had the Big Mic, as per usual it was delicious and super filling! We will miss you Root! read more

I'm not gonna lie, I went to Root slightly hesitant after reading quite a few not so nice reviews. Especially since I went on a busy holiday, but I'm extremely glad to see how wrong I was. The service is excellent, quick to take my order, food came out a good pace, and I never had to wait long for a refill on my beer. I also had a nice chat with one of the servers. The food was also pretty damn good. A wide variety of veganized classics. I got the jack fruit cake, which is supposed to be like a crab cake. While I haven't eaten one in YEARS, this is brought back memories of what a crab cake tastes like. The texture was spot on. The wings were super crispy. My partner got the big mic, which was huge and super filling. And also insanely delicious. Overall this place is a comfortable, not pretentious, and reasonable priced. I absolutely suggest you go here. *my ONLY complaint is that my asparagus was slightly undercooked and needed the ends cut off. The ends of asparagus are really fibrous and hard to eat. Whether your vegan, vegetarian, or a meat eater I think this is the sort of place anyone can enjoy. read more

When I mean amazing its AMAZING. Decided to switch my lifestyle about 2 weeks ago to see how vegan was. In fact, its been difficult because I miss cheese :( Anyways..... I decided to YELP some vegan restaurants and came across ROOT. I was excited because it was "Wing Night" .... Who would out thought?? The staff made it so welcoming; clearly not only targeting vegans but everyone as a whole. They welcomed anyone to enjoy a different style of cuisine. The food was AMAZING. I went for the Old Bay & Sweet Chill Vegan Wings with the Vegan Pesto Mac & Cheese. We went to Root because of the nice reviews as well as we were looking for a vegetarian place to eat.. the place is good...food is nice... the service that evening was BAD. We were in town for a conferenc, one of us a vegan. We found this restaurant by chance. Super cute, comfortable vibe inside. Lots of choices on the menu for folks who are not VEGAN, meaning, if you are not vegan, there are still a lot of options that would satisfy someone who is a meat eater. I brought my boyfriend here because we were in the area. Again, I had a great experience. I ordered the buffalo eggplant pasta with blue cheese ricotta. My boyfriend had the big mic. This place is a true treat for vegan and non-vegan foodies. You'll forget that you're eating animal product free food! I recommend ordering "the Big Mic". It's not on the menu most of the time, but it's root's vegan version of a Big Mac, and it's super tasty. Root also has a full bar, and TVs with the latest sports games on to give it a hip vegan sports bar atmosphere. Decent setup and vibe. The food was decent. The arancini was good for the vegan version. The kfc bowl was pretty good as well but feel that the gravy could be improved. Was not a fan of the wings or pesto pizza. The worst part of this trip was the wait staff. They were pleasant enough however they were completely disorganized. I adore this vegan pub! I'm a long time vegetarian and I was so happy to find this place. I really love that they change the menu with what foods are in season. That's how eating should be! We eat here whenever we are in Lancaster. The food is always delicious and fresh and a great value, especially by Boston standards. We loved the mushroom chowder - we live out of state and wish we have the recipe so we could eat it more often! The Cuban sandwich was also very good! Pretty average food all around. Menu could benefit from a little bit more imagination and a lot more superfood ingredients. We had the Mic (seitan burger) and the Reuben, both of which came with greasy fries. And both of which were all one color (beige) boring looking dishes that could have better presentations. Also no sweet potato option for the fries, which is disappointing. Exciting to have a dedicated vegan spot in Lancaster, but this place could do better to represent truly healthy, colorful and creative vegan food. Friendly, efficient service though. read more

The desserts were interesting and all supposedly made in-house. I had the mint chocolate chip ice cream which I found somewhat grainy and crystallized and very lacking in mint flavor. The flourless chocolate cake will likely shock you with its petiteness, but trust me, it packs a wallop of richness that will probably satisfy you. The tres leches cake and honey lavender crème brûlée got high marks. Overall we all liked the ambiance, and were somewhat disappointed with the food. 3.5* rounded down to 3*.

One star for at least offering a vegan option in Lancaster. There's not enough of that. But their awesome logo and rustic-cool decor can't make up for the sad food prep (hard baked potatoes, for example, not-too-creative recipes, and boiled or over-steamed plain broccoli) and unhealthy ingredients. Toffuti is terrible for you, worse than cheese. Nutritional yeast is worse: it's an MSG. It's healthier and tastier to go to a farm-to-table restaurant that serves meat and to order vegetarian meals (hold the dairy) there. They have much more flavor and are prepared with yummier recipes. In fact, it's a waste of money when I know I can follow a recipe from my plant-based cookbooks and come up with much more-fun courses. This is was very disappointing. Lots of fake food (fake butter, fake cheese, fake meat, fake eggs) and vegan "junk food." Why serve fake when there is so much real food without preservatives, corn oil, and corn syrup, that tastes far better and won't make us sick? Wayyy too pricey, as well, for what you get. read more
