Very disappointing visit. I've been to this place a few times and it was always a good experience. Our last visit felt very different. We ordered the eggs Benedict and all three dishes arrived with solid hard eggs, on top of that all we could taste was vinegar in the hollandaise sauce and the potatoes were old and dry. In addition to this, general hygiene seems to have dropped - even the toilets were noticeably dirty. Not sure if it's a management change but it doesn't have the quality that it used to so we won't be going back in a hurry. read more

Enjoyed an excellent meal with friends at this fine dining establishment in Camas, WA. Our party of five was seated relatively early on a Tuesday night, and service was attentive, helpful and friendly. Our knowledgeable server expertly steered us through the menu and assured me that most of their dishes could be made gluten free. (I think the Portland area must be the GF capital of the USA. It's so easy for me to have safe meals here!) The blackberry mojito is a great way to start off your culinary adventure at Roots, but be sure to save room for a glass - or bottle - of the great wines available. To start off my meal, I opted for the heirloom tomato salad special - yellow, orange and red tomatoes bursting with flavor combined expertly with mozzarella, onion, basil, olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. So simple, and yet it was my favorite dish of the evening. I can also heartily recommend the Dungeness crab and avocado salad, which offered unexpected goodness in the play of radish and vermouth vinaigrette against the crab and avocado. The rest of our party enjoyed the ribeye steak, the pork chop, and one of the evening's specials, the halibut. Dessert is not to be missed, and Roots' creme brûlée is one of the best I've eaten outside France. I ordered the soup of the day and a pot of tea and waited about ten minutes for my tea, then another 5 minutes for my soup. The soup arrived and it was unseasoned and bland. My waiter never came back to check on me to see if everything was ok. After waiting another ten minutes I just paid and left. I don't know if patrons are typically ignored at this restaurant but I won't go back again to find out. read more

This is a local restaurant very close to my home. Serves local ingredients farm to table. I have eaten here many times and enjoyed it. They have excellent steaks and really great side dishes. Famous late night happy hour hamburger Yum.Today however, I was very disappointed. Went there with a good friend who has also been there several times. I talked her into ordering the pastrami sandwich. I had it before and I liked it a lot. Unfortunately today, after talking my friend and getting it, it had an extreme amount of fat on the pastrami. I enjoy a little of the fat ,it is part of its charm. along with the smokiness of it.My friend not so much. It was just too much grease. She did not enjoy it. I got a wedge salad. Simple but yummy. The bacon was way too crispy. Almost break a tooth crispy:( I started with a parsnip and fennel bisque. That was incredibly delicious. Also their bread and butter is good. We each had a glass of wine. After explaining to our waiter that my friend did not enjoy her sandwich, he simply said I'll tell the chef and boxed up the other half. Not sure this was great customer service. Could have maybe gave her Glass of wine free? I DK. The service is hit and miss as well. We each paid about $30 for our lunch. Finally came here for dinner for a birthday. The food was excellent, our server wasn't has quite attentive as when we hang with Burt. But the food was excellent we had the risotto with crab and it was amazing. We had the lamb which was very good and it was cooked perfectly. I had the scallops and it was delicious and I'm not a scallops fan. And then one of the girls had the pork chop and it was excellent and the flavor was really good and it was seasoned. We all had forks in each other's plates. My only negative is how expensive it is. We come often for breakfast and it is also amazing food. read more

I have so much to say about this restaurant... First of all Andrew was my waiter and he was amazing, he took his time with every course, even though the restaurant was closing and dessert was not ordered or served.... Andrew was patient and spaced out every course. OK now for the good part, the food...... for the starter I had beet salad with hazelnut and goat cheese, sounds interesting but very tasty also I had flatbread pizza with arugula Parmesan and a white wine vinaigrette that was really good.... Now for the Pièce de résistance...I had the boneless beef short ribs with a demi-glace and whipped potatoes, ginger garlic carrot and snap peas it also came with Yorkshire pudding..... Talk about to die for!!! The boneless short ribs were so tender, I actually ate them with a fork! Oh,.....I almost forgot to talk about the dessert, that was also wonderful! I love Roots so much. I wish I had more money so I could have fancy dates here more often. My boyfriend and I went here for our Valentine's day dinner (on February 15th lol) and we were blown away by just how amazing Roots is. We ordered drinks (they are pretty strong), I got scallops with Risotto and my boyfriend got spareribs. The food was amazing and actually large portions. Everything was decently priced for the quality. We also got creme brulee for dessert... So tasty. Our server was very attentive and all the food came out quickly. The food was delicious we got the boneless short ribs which melted in your mouth. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection and the potatoes were delicious. Went for a special Anniversary Dinner, was greeted and seated very quickly, did have reservations. Our waiter was full of suggestions, drink order,appetizers, etc. Pass on that, but ordered soup for him and salad for me. Then dinner prawns with tomato risotto which was very bland not really appetizing. The pork chop for me was very thick and blackened making very hard to cut had no taste at all. The mashed potatoes definitely from a pkg. To finish our dinner had warm toffee cake with ice cream and fresh raspberries, dessert very tasty. For $150. left very disappointed with food. This is one of our favorite restaurants in the Portland/ Vancouver area. It has great good, prepared with the upmost care to provide delicate layers of flavors. While the purveyors the same, Carlton pork etc. , the preperation changes the flavor seasonally. Scrumptious!! The service is excellent! We really enjoy Roots. We booked the private room for a party of 14 and our server Andrew made the night so great with his wonderful personality and attentive service. We appreciated him and the way he talked to my teenager and younger children. We thought he was one of the best servers we have ever had. The onion tart was delicious. The salmon was creative and flavorful. The toffee cake was great. We aren't a fan of the apple crisp. They need a different recipe that's more cinnamon and gooey. We would recommend this restaurant. When you get down to it, Roots Restaurant and Bar, at its root, is a nice alternative local dining option for North Camas or East Vancouver (WA). Despite spotty (almost confusing) service, this popular choice in the Riverstone Marketplace shopping center ranks in the top 10 restaurants for Clark County. Our server struggled with offering a wine selection, so our friend recommended a local bottle of 2012 Ex Umbris Syrah (Owen Roe - Columbia Valley). The dark red wine was supple and layered with hints of fruits and berries. This is a good example of what Washington wines can be. For dinner, the waiter again made some odd comments and suggestions, so, we simply went with our gut feelings for night. All of the following had me rooting for Roots: Cascade Natural Rib Eye (12oz) Steak with Seasonal Vegetables, Compound Butter & Demi-glaze ($33.50 - 4 stars), Brandied Chicken Liver Mousse with Peppercorn Honey & Baguette Slices ($9 - 4 stars), Dungeness Crab and Avocado with Radish & Vermouth Vinaigrette ($19 - 3.5 stars), Braised Short Ribs with Horseradish Whipped Yukon Potatoes, Baby Carrots, Roasted Shallots & Yorkshire Pudding ($26.50 - 4 stars), and a daily special Wild Mushroom Lasagna (4 stars). For dessert, we split a simple Creme Brûlée (3 stars) and another bottle of wine.
