Came here for the first time on a lunch break and was so happy I did. I sat in the pretty bar, ordered some Prosecco, the pesto cheesy flat bread, more Prosecco and finished with the creme brulee. Everything was amazing! What made my experience even better was my server. I can't remember his name right this moment but he was very personable and it was clear be has a passion for bartending. If there is one thing that you should be doing before you close and or open it's clean. You *could* have the best food (which you don't) or the best service (which you don't) with sticky tables and crumbs everywhere and it wouldn't make or brake the experience ... But ... Came here for a wine-paired dinner event from Five Star Cellars in Walla Walla. For $85 per person + tax + gratuity we had a totally awesome meal. For sure. The service was good, but it was a group of ~25-30 people. The winemaker spoke about the wine and Brad Roots spoke about the food. We started with Maine lobster salpicon, a cold dish of avocado, cucumber, tomato, lobster and paprika coulis. This was good, but I would have chosen local Dungeness crab over the lobster. It was paired well with the semillon. The next course was my favorite - russet potato gnocchi with porcini mushroom cream sauce topped with matchstick pears. This was paired with a rose of sangiovese. The gnocchi were perfect in texture. The pairing of pears with the porcini mushroom cream was truly inspired. Next came beef tenderloin topped with a deep fried oyster and melted Camembert. This was paired with Cabernet Sauvignon. Wow. This pairing was really delicious. The steak was a little overcooked but still very flavorful nonetheless. Feeling full? Too bad, because now we had the grilled lamb chop with a caponata of sundried tomatoes, raisins, and mint hollandaise with a glass of merlot. Perfectly cooked and just plain yummy. Finally, a strawberry semifreddo with cabernet gastrique and Stumptown coffee. The perfect end to a really great meal. Actually, I think a winemaker dinner like this is one of the best way to sample this restaurant. It isn't cheap, but this is one of the best meals I've had in the last year. Our favorite restaurant across the Columbia River! We stop every time we're in the neighborhood. We've never been disappointed. If you get a chance sit at the Chef's Counter. You get to see the food go by. Like most fine restaurants, the description on the menu doesn't do the food justice. Watching it go by, you'll see exactly what they mean. We love the Duck Confit, regardless of what it's served with. The desserts are great, they Pastry Chef is amazing. Salads, soups, small plates and entrees are not to be missed. Roots is an upscale dining experience conveniently located about 5 minutes away from my work. Many lunches, happy hours, dinners and desserts have been tried and tasted there. Whether your style is fries or a filet Roots certainly has something on the menu for you. The chefs are constantly changing and updating the menus, and while it's difficult to choose what you want to eat, I'll tell you the truth, sometimes it's also difficult to read and understand the menu. Now I'm an educated woman, I went to college, I do my own grocery shopping, and heck, I even watch the food network, but reading some of the items on the menu really leaves me wanting to secretly pull out my phone and pull up Google search. The ambiance is classy-casual, you can wear both a dress or jeans and still feel like you belong. The food is great but if you only have an hour for lunch don't expect you to get out on time. Wonderful experience. We had been here a few times years ago and we remember being happy with our food and the service. Somehow it fell off our radar as we thought of it as only a special occasion place. We decided to go our for dinner and wanted somewhere different for us so we called and made a last minute reservation. Every single thing we ordered was perfect. The food came out in a perfectly timed order hot and simply delicious. Both of us had iced tea to drink, had the appetizer, soup, and two entree's pictured and it was less than $100. With restaurant prices going up all over this didn't feel like a wild price. The quality of the food surpasses a lot of places we have spent $100. read more

The food is always good at Roots. High quality, fresh and flavorful and an ever changing menu to keep up with the season. At this visit it was a first for the patio and brunch. The patio was fabulous! Shade and sunshine was to be found, plants and private. Not much street noise. The brunch menu had a little of everything so something for everyone, burgers, eggs, salad. Service is usually outstanding here and today was no exception. Our food selection was eggs over easy on a thin crispy biscuit with gravy, bacon and home fry potatoes. I was disappointed.. for the price the flavors should be on point, and they missed the boat. I ordered the chicken liver with truffle honey and toasted baguette and initially was pleased.. but the honey became overpowering three bites in.. and the chicken liver was lacking flavor dimension. The romaine heart salad was drowned in dressing. And while the best salad with goat cheese was dressed perfectly.. the prices of kale were too big for me to get on my fork and still look classy eating them. The main dish.. roasted duck with micro greens were the biggest disappointment. The duck skin while crispy, tasted terrible.. as if it was old meat, and lastly the micro greens and potatos were drenched in vinaigrette.. way overpowering! The flavors just weren't there. The burger we ordered was stupendous.. but the fries were oversalted. We couldn't catch a break.. won't be returning. read more

Roots had been closed entirely during Covid and they have opened again recently. Roots has been a favorite go-to for special occasions and I was anxious to get back. Our dinner was excellent. Two of our party ordered the pork chop and they are still singing it praises. "Best pork chop I ever had," said one. One had steak and enjoyed it and the other of the group had the Halibut. All wonderful and flavorful, the service was fantastic and we really felt welcome. What a treat to have such a first class establishment in Vancouver WA not Vancouver BC! The first time we tried this place a few years back, I swore I would never return. I am so glad that I came back tonight. The filet mignon was perfect, the cocktails delicious, and the service and attention to detail impeccable. We have a three year old son, and they were very kind to make sure we had bench seating and that he was given the best service from when they brought food and drinks to just giving him attention and saying hi to him. Sadly, the night I visited they did not have oysters on the half shell. It's one of the reasons why I picked it - saw a photo of them on Yelp, it must of been seasonal item. We ordered pesto & mozzarella cheese flat bread as the appetizer & split the chicken dish (forget the name). The chicken breast had a perfect crust and the sauce they served it with was amazing. Under the chicken was potatoes, large pieces of onions (so yummy), & long string green beans. My daughter drank water & I ordered a coke. The service was on point - waiter & staff very attentive! I really wanted to like this place. I came here for a special event with some of my friends but the staff was not as friendly as I had hoped. When my friends did not order alcoholic drinks and or expensive meals the waiter seemed much less friendly than before. Our drinks were hardly refilled and the food was $$$$ for the actual taste. My only experiences at Roots have been professional dinners in group settings. That being said, there's probably a reason why these dinners are often booked here: excellent food. I've eaten a handful a meals here and I've never been disappointed. Typically they have good wine, but there was one time we had the most amazing red from Walla Walla. I know I took a picture of the bottle and made a point to look them up later, although now I can't find it. Anyways, decent to amazing wine options. Friendly and helpful service staff. The food here was delicious! Unfortunately the wait staff was less than attentive. We had been seated for fifteen minutes before we received water or our server even greeted us. He was much more interested in the group seated next to us and went back and forth checking on them and explaining specials and making substitutions without so much as checking in on us. To start the roasted tomato soup was perfect! My bloody mary was good but the pickled green bean was a little tough. My entree was the steak and eggs. My steak was really good and cooked just the way I asked. My eggs were a little runny for my taste but that didn't stop me from clearing my plate. Our server was very astute. She was very sweet and welcoming. I ended my meal with the Lagavulin 16yr single malt scotch. It had a light burn with heavy wooded flavor and a slight star anise after taste. I got mine neat but I recommend getting it with an ice cube or two. read more

Andy was our server, he was awesome, this guy makes you want him to join your table. Now for the food. Our table had both the chicken and beef short rib which we shared. I would give two thumbs up for either. Also had mussels, and you need to ask for more bread to dip into the broth its is very taste. Great selection of beer, wine our hard drinks. If you're up in Washington, you expect to order salmon, mussels or other seafood. You don't expect to order steaks. Looking at the steak prices, it's not as expensive as other steakhouses, so I don't expect the quality of the ribeye to be great. I was wrong. I eat a lot of ribeyes, my favorite cut, and I have to say, this is one of the best ribeyes I have ever eaten. It was an Angus steak, not prime, but yet it was so flavorful. There was marbling throughout the steak and it was cooked in a way where the fat was burnt enough to release the flavor and in some part, burnt to make it crispy. Wow, it was so flavorful and tasty. Amazing!!! The salad was delicious, especially with the small bits of bacon sprinkled throughout each bite. The apple tart is excellent. All the apples were thinly sliced to perfection. For Thinsulin fans, there's plenty of green light choices. Overall, I would definitely come back to this restaurant. read more

This is one of my regular spots for Happy Hour for a couple reasons. First of all, it's only about 7 minutes from my house, second, the food is good. The prices are a little high for a HH menu but I still think it's worth it. Yesterday I had a med/rare burger and it came out hot, juicy, and perfect in the middle. I also added the bacon and Gruyere. After you do that, your HH burger turns into a 10.00 burger. Fries are extra and can bit a bit salty. The clams are always great. I used to order the Fish n Chips a lot, but over time, the pieces have gotten smaller and have been very inconsistent in how they are prepared and served. Sometimes they are way over done, very dark and greasy and other times they can be real good. Not worth the gamble for me anymore. They always have a few good beers on tap, the cocktails are well prepared and tasty. The staff is always great and it's a very comfortable place to be in weather you're there quick for a snack and drink, or if you stay with a bunch of friends for a longer period of time. Dropped in early on a Sunday evening and watched the place fill up even though staff said it was slow, with only two reservations. And it's easy to see why this place is always busy; the bartenders were friendly and efficient and the food and drinks were great!
