I had driven by this place so many times over the years and always wondered about it. I've always had a soft spot for hole in the wall Mexican spots. They take me right back to growing up in San Jose, where my all time favorite was a long running family place that really set the bar. After a Sunday visit to the South Coast Botanic Garden, we decided to finally stop in for lunch. We parked in the back and walked in early afternoon. [[HIGHLIGHT]]First impression, I loved the vibe. Murals on the walls, heavy furniture, that lived in feel. Exactly my kind of place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The young woman who greeted us was warm and welcoming, which always sets the tone. Chips and salsa came out quickly, and both were solid. The salsa had great flavor and just the right kick. I ordered the half Rosa's Special, which was around 16 to 17 dollars. Here is where I have to be honest. It was good, but it felt like it was missing a little something in flavor. And while the plate looked big at first glance, the portion ended up feeling pretty average. For comparison, my local diner Snax serves a massive wet burrito for about the same price, with twice the portion and more punch in flavor. That said, Rosa's is going for a different kind of experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]What really stood out to me was the atmosphere. Worst food and worst customer service I've experienced. We ordered a shrimp fajita, beef enchiladas, and a carne asada wet burrito. The total came to $88. When we opened the food at work, we were very disappointed. The shrimp fajita had only four shrimp, the wet burrito had virtually no carne asada in it, and the red sauce on the enchiladas tasted sour and bitter. We tried to eat the food without complaining, but it was bad enough that we felt we needed to call and let them know. The employee who answered told us to bring the food back if we wanted a refund. I explained that we had already eaten some of it, and she simply repeated that we would need to bring it back to get our money back. There was no apology, no attempt to make things right, and no effort to offer any kind of solution or compensation. Between the poor food quality and the lack of customer service, this was honestly one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had. read more

I've been going to Rosa's La Cabana for 30+ years (back when it was Freddie's La Cabana). There is no taco on the planet that can compare to the crispy ground beef tacos. It is the perfect combination of seasoned beef, cheese, and lettuce (with a little dressing on it) inside a perfectly crispy shell. They are great ordered to go but are even better when you eat there. My family always splits a couple Rosa's Special (signature wet burrito with shredded beef). Complimentary chips and salsa always hold us over until our meal comes, which is usually pretty quick. Rosa herself often takes the orders and is always so friendly. If I lived in Torrance I would eat here once a month. read more

There is no place like Rosas La Cabana! I've been going here since the late 90s. I live far but I try to go there a few times a year. She added a sweet spice mix (idk what it's called) that's never been added before to our micheladas and when asked for a new one because I didn't like it she went off about how "it's waisted now, it's always been added, we should've told her before she made it," etc. she wanted us to pay for it and reluctantly took the drink back to the kitchen. MIND YOU I only come here for the micheladas. The food bloats me and I never feel good after eating their food. This little spot located in South Bay serves wonderful home cooked Mexican food, which has a menu of all the favorites. Some of our favorite things here are the Chicken Tostada (which is huge), hard shell tacos, enchiladas, and tamales. The service is great, you can tell the family runs this place and do a good job at making sure that the customer is taken care of. I was willing to give her another chance ,Me and my family attempted to come Wednesday around 8:30pm . I checked Yelp before coming and said it close at 9:30. I also had friends meeting me there. They were just a few min behind us. We walked in no greeting at all. One of the cooks was having a beer at a table and he handed us chips and salsa. A few min later Rosa approached with menus and said in a VERY rude tone you order now we close at 9. I said Yelp said 9:30 she like no it's 9 very unprofessional again. We said no we're no ready we're waiting for people she rolled her eyes and left. A few min later we just got up and left as our friends were approaching because , she made us feel very unwelcome. Both times Rosa was not friendly at all and the one time she did serve me she forgot many things . Half of my part didn't have drinks for half of the time after asking her many times were the rest of are drinks were. I have served for many years she doesn't have the ability , memory or personality to be a waitress at all.I will not be coming be coming back and don't recommend any one else to go there. Wish I could give them a negative star. Came here for brunch on Saturday and ordered a beef burrito. I did mention very clearly that I wanted more beef and very little beans. When my order arrived the whole burrito was mostly beans, very little meat and the meat tasted like it was cooked in old grease. I took 2 bites of it and I right way told the server and so she took my plate that I barely touched. When we asked for the bill, she proudly said she gave us a discount for the burrito. I called in to order takeout with a few questions and the woman I spoke to on the phone was very friendly, very helpful, and insured me the food will be done in "five minutes, no more than 10." My elderly mother lives in a senior retirement place about two miles from Rosa's La Cabaña, and Mom loves Mexican food and shrimp. So, every few weeks, I will make an 80-mile, two hour+ R/T visit to my mom. We have Rosa's in our "Rolodex" as one of Mom's favorite places -- especially because of Rosa's most tantalizingly delicious Shrimp Al mojo de ajo -- shrimp sautéed in a most decadent garlic butter sauce. First note, Rosa has a very colorfully, charmingly-decorated little, modest cabaña with hand-painted murals on the wall. She has a vase of fresh flowers on the table along with brightly colored placemats. If she's there, she'll warmly greet us, welcome us back, and ensure Mom's comfortably seated at her favorite table. If her nephew or daughter/niece is in, you'll also receive a warm greeting and lovely hospitality. I normally get a Corona Lite and Mom a Chablis; but then this sign started beckoning us, and it says something like, "Delicious Homemade Sangria." Well, Rosa must love modesty, because, man, her Sangria's the bomb. She adds in like six maraschino cherries that sink to the bottom; and after we we've lovingly sipped this most superbly sublime Sangria throughout our meal, you get to the cherries. And my, those cherries, they absorb some of the Sangria, and they are beyond heavenly to eat. Now, back to the menu ... dinner comes with rice and beans, salad; and you also get a choice of flour or corn tortillas plus chips and salsa. I find the chips, particularly warmly fresh tasting, and the salsa has quite some kick, but not too much. I also prefer to just get pinto beans without the rice, and they're accommodating. It's truly a phenomenal dinner and a perfect-sized portion for a lady. I take home the Chile Relleños for my hubby, and he really enjoys them. For dessert, we enjoy Rosa' decadently delicious, fresh hot churros with a little extra chocolate sauce. So, what is it about Rosa's that makes her food and her cabaña truly special ... that most important, signature ingredient? ... It's LOVE. You truly feel the love. read more
