If you're looking for a place that does deep dish Chicago style pizza well, swing by Rosati's tucked away in the neighborhood of Granville (East of Mission Valley). It is a local chain/franchise in Chicago and I'm glad they have one here in San Diego. This place was recommended to me by someone from Chicago and they claimed the pizza was very good so I had to check it out for myself. Upon entrance, there are a ton of seats that can accommodate large parties and plenty of seats at the bar to enjoy some drinks and television. This is also a sports bar that does enjoyable happy hours and has some old school arcade style games in the back, near the restrooms. Who knew 'Chicago style' was also thin crust pizza?! I ordered both the thin crust and the deep dish to try them both out in the smallest size, I believe it was 12inch and 10inch and it was the perfect portion. I would highly recommend you check this place out if you're craving a great Chicago style deep dish pizza. Only reason I didn't give this place a 5 star was because it was pretty warm/hot inside the restaurant. They had a few fans running, but couldn't feel it and was sweating while I was eating, which could have been better. Being from Illinois I'm always excited to learn of Chicago style pizza joints! We stopped in during a Bears game, and this place was packed! Found a booth near the entrance luckily! Waitress indicated they were short staffed, and we were concerned because every table was full...with one waitress, one bartender, and even a nice kid helping fill the gaps. Ordered a salad and a deep dish pizza as well as beers... the pizza came out quicker than expected but we never saw the salad. Thick cheesy pizza, just like the Rosatis of Chicagoland! Ambiance is run down roadside, service was severely understaffed but doing the best they could, and prices outpace food quality/quantity. Being from Chicago, I know Rosati's well. When one opened in San Diego, I was hyped for a taste of home. Verdict? Not exactly like Chicago. The toppings aren't stacked as high and the crust is different (probably the water). Our server, Samantha, was our first great impression. She was so pleasant and accommodating. Definitely had a mostly-locals kind of feel - we liked that too. The food was outstanding. We started with arincini balls - deep fried risotto balls filled with Italian beef and spicy giardiniera. The marinara sauce was the highlight - not sweet but not acidic; it was perfectly balanced. Giggling - I ate the little cup of it with my fork! Ha ha... The owners mentioned their Italian sausage is their own mix so we tried it on the pizza. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars. It's local, cute, has a lot of tvs to watch sports, isn't a chain etc but wow what a disappointing experience. The pesto pasta was gross I had to send it back, it was like a soup. The wings however were great. They were jumbo lemon pepper wings. Since then nothing has gone right. The menu and prices they have on their site don't match the real menu at all. I called four different times and items that they have on their site are not on their menu and can't be ordered. Last time I ordered the 12 jumbo wings. They totally ripped me off. The were the tiniest wings I've ever seen NOTHING jumbo about them at all and the charged me THIRTY THREE DOLLARS for 12 little m wings. $33 for 12 wings?? Total rip off. I'm going to go out on a limb and pronounce this one of San Diego's best happy hours. Mostly because it goes 'til 7:00 most days and all day Sunday! The bar area was definitely lively this particular Friday evening. If you're not from Chicago, you may have never had an Italian Beef sandwich. I hadn't until last night. The "Mini" is on happy hour for $8. It's indeed pretty small- a 4" section of the regular sub. It was delicious! Sort of like a French Dip meets a cheesesteak with sweet or hot peppers on top and au jus for dipping. I'm a heathen, so I just poured some over the top- juicy! Sweet peppers next time. I think the full-sized size one at full price ($16) might actually be a better deal and you can get it with a side salad! (or fries). That's the plan for next time. Also tried the happy hour "thin" crust Jumbo Slice ($8). While the Italian sausage was authentic and high quality, the crust was thick (not thin) and a bit unexpected. I think I'd pass on that. The deep dish has to be better. No matter what you eat, the happy hour beers are a good deal. I had a large 23 ounce Societe (craft) for just $8. Wells and house wines are likely $7, but I failed to snap a pic of that side of the happy hour menu. Next time! read more

I was looking for Tavern style Chicago Pizza and I decided to try this place. Just to clarify it's not deep dish like traditional Chicago. It's a thin crispy crust cut into squares. Probably the best pizza. But it has to be made the way they do it in Chicago. I did some research and found out that the family migrated from Italy more than 100 years ago. That's a good sign. Anyway, I went in to try the pizza and it was phenomenal. Exactly like Chicago style tavern pizza. And here's the best part so reasonably priced. Lunch special is $15 for 14 inch pizza with two toppings. To add to the experience the server/waitress, Nicole, was a sweetheart. You're doing something right Rosati's. Rosati's is a chain of pizza joints from Chicagoland and one of my favorites when I was growing up there so I was so freaking excited to have them here closer to San Diego. There are locations in the North County off the 5 and the 15. I believe the first one in SoCal I found out about was in Corona over a decade and a half ago and I have been to all of them. Super solid spot. It's a family friendly place for sure with a nice selection of alcohol and very solid food. The interior is nice, not too cramped capacity wise. TVs everywhere televising Chicago-based sports primarily. Rosati's is family owned. There's a little girl running the cash register and taking orders, she's very sweet. I haven't tried too much here but i did try the Chicago beef, wet, with peppers. It was phenomenal. Sorry I don't have experience with having it in Chicago but it is without a doubt a highly competitive beef based sandwich in this region. It beats gaglione bros and Gus pizza, those are my local go tos. I can't say I'll come all the way down to Mission Gorge just for the sandwich but my son's school has events here often and it's a great spot. Recommend for sure. read more

Tender with a hint of sweetness. One of the coupons is for a 16" pizza with one topping, one basket of dough nuggets, and one 2 liter of soda for $29.99. The coupon code is BUNDLE29. When I use the coupon, the price changes from $45.90 to $38.99 and not the advertised $29.99 total. I called the store and spoke with James (the Manager) who didn't know why the coupon was wrong. They advised the "local coupons" are managed by the corporate office. They also checked the order on their register to confirm the total was $38.99 and not $29.99 (as advertised). I asked to speak with the owner and they were not available. I left my phone number for them and asked for their phone number and name. The owner's name is Sam Deeb and the phone number was not provided. I submitted a web form complaint on myrosatis com for the corporate office and am awaiting a reply. Failing to honor "local coupons" posted on the official Rosati's website for the San Diego location is both frustrating and dishonest. UPDATE: Although we left a phone number and email with the restaurant manager and the owner wrote "We appreciate your patience and hope to make things right for you soon." in the comment below, no one has reached out to discuss this issue. Separately, the Rosati's corporate office sent an email confirming they passed the complaint on to the franchise owner. Days after my complaint, the BUNDLE29 coupon is still active on the website even though the restaurant refuses to honor this price. read more
