Here's my breakdown of what I like and dislike and why: Like: Portofino Scramble: turkey, spinach, egg whites, n pesto. Turkey n Pesto might sound weird (it kinda is wrong), but it's still yummy; who doesn't love pesto?? Field Green Cranberry Chicken Salad: hard to mess this one up, and it's not an "original" dish, but it's nice and I like it. (Chicken, Walnuts, Cranberries, bleu cheese, and dark field greens with hot grilled chicken and a balsamic) Chicken Piccata: Again, it's nothing special, but it's a classic, it's warm and comforting after a long cold Monterey day, and it's not expensive. Winner! Dislike: Onion Rings - they are breaded in thick breadcrumbs; it's basically a vehicle for a oil monsoon in your stomach - no bueno. Ever heard of tempura?? Much better breading/batter. Unsure: Their desserts. Let's be real here: 2.5-3 whole 9" cakes cut into layers with slabs of frosting in between? I hate German Chocolate Cake, and the one they have in the display case was on the verge of making me quesy with it's glopped on coconut hanging out the side (much like the muffin top I'd get if I ate it). I do, however, have a hard time saying no to their chocolate lava ganache cheesecake thing... it's enough to send me into diabetic shock but it goes well with chick flicks ;) read more

A group of us went in for lunch...we split our meals to all order our own slices of baked good (recommended by one of the hostesses. She was VERY helpful.) No one complained about their sandwiches and veggie burger so I will give it a solid four stars. For desserts, we had lemon, strawberry, mango/key lime/ coconut/peanut butter. Dear Lord in Heaven! I had been here years ago. I came back tonight since we were in the area and I am currently flabbergasted by the flavors and friendliness of the staff. My better half and I shared a Chicken Parmesan that has left me without shoes and socks; that is to say, they were blown off. The joy of simple ingredients shines through. The right cream, the right garlic, the right amount of salt in the cream sauce - the chicken was perfectly cooked and the breading so full of classic Italian flavors. It was the perfect meal for us tonight. I was remarking that I can only remember having better Italian in Italy itself. I am aware there are other great Italian joints near my current location but, this is up there and the price is completely reasonable. We were in Monterey for my birthday weekend and after a long day of aquarium fun we were very hungry. Having two young children under age of 4 my husband and I wanted a restaurant that was going to have quality food and accommodate for children. Upon arrival we were sat down and then proceeded to wait for service. After almost 30min and being told that someone would be right with us, we had a waitress come over to help us. We were promptly served our drinks, and then our appetizers and entrees arrived accordingly. The food was delicious and I definitely recommend ordering dessert. An article that I recently read referred to Guy Fieri as "the human embodiment of an Ed Hardy shirt." (Wow, talk about hitting the nail on the head.) That being said, don't let his endorsement give you the wrong ideas about Rosine's, which to me is nothing short of a perfect representation of the classic American cafe. (For the record, my girlfriend and I had the good fortune of paying Rosine's a visit well before the ol' blonde-spiked wannabe waddled his way in, but I digress.) We stumbled upon Rosine's in the midst of a road trip through California, and boy oh boy, were we fortunate to do so. Being that we stepped in for dinner in the middle of the work week, we had no difficulty at all being seated in one of Rosine's cozy booths. (Of course, this could very well have changed in recent months, giving the place's newfound spike in publicity). The ambience at this homey little family-owned place is relaxing and comforting. You inevitably get the feel that you're glimpsing into a longstanding tradition of authentic comfort food - like you're being invited to grab a seat in an old friend's dining room. The auras of love, family, and togetherness at Rosine's were undeniable. Our server, Camilla, was very friendly and upbeat; I particularly appreciated the fact that she took the time to converse with my girlfriend and I - asking where we were originally from, and whether I ever planned to cut off the pair of Coachella wristbands on my right arm (of course not!). Special mention goes to the servers' assistant - shame that I can't remember his name - who made us feel right at home and never allowed our drinks to go unfilled, even once. The menu at Rosine's is pretty extensive; Italian, Mexican (the Americanized kind!) and American comfort food classics are each offered, and in staggering portions. While my better half decided on the Spaghetti and Meat Sauce, I went through a brief stint of emotional turmoil trying to choose between the Chicken Piccata and the Ultimate Burger - but eventually decided on the latter...after all, the word "Ultimate" is a pretty powerful adjective! Initially, I was a bit disappointed to learn that the Ultimate Burger didn't come with a side order of fries. I had assumed that I would have little difficulty going "Adam Richman" on my meal...unfortunately, I sometimes fail to think statements through before uttering them. I proudly proclaimed to both the lady friend and our server that I would conquer the Ultimate Burger with ease. I couldn't have been more wrong... There very well may have been an entire cow's worth of beef piled into the Ultimate Burger - which was also stacked high with bacon, mushrooms, veggies, and cheese. Let's put it this way - this was one of them "bougey people" fork & knife burgers; if you do things correctly, every bite of the Ultimate Burger will offer a perfectly balanced ratio of perfectly melted cheese (i.e. not cold and starting to harden) and tender, juicy beef patty (and that's coming from an Umami Burger aficionado!). The dish was a masterfully executed combination of quality and quantity. (...and I only finished about half.) My girlfriend's Spaghetti was also pretty tasty - the rich meat sauce had a welcome, refreshing tomato flavor, and the pasta itself was prepared to a perfect al dente. Along with our entrees, the lady and I ordered a pair of side salads - which were fresh and pretty tasty - especially when paired with the house vinaigrette. In spite of the fact that our entrees alone could've likely satisfied the appetite of a dinosaur or two, we ended up grossly underestimating the size of Rosine's dessert portions, as well. We ordered one slice of the Snicker Pie, and another of the Peanut Butter Cheesecake. I suppose that the Rosine's interpretation of the word "slice" isn't all that equivalent to the definition that you and I would have in mind. These servings are thick, truck-driver sized helpings that can barely fit into the plastic to-go containers that they're placed into. And being that we had just recently experienced a dessert letdown earlier in the day (Tout Sweet Patisserie in SF), my girl and I were more than happy to indulge in some REAL dessert. The Peanut Butter Pie and Snickers Pie were both cool, creamy, and shared a distinctly homemade quality about them. Both desserts had a fantastic intermingling of sweet and salty flavors that elevated them to new confectionary heights. Unsurprisingly, it took about four separate meals to finally finish these hefty slices of yum. Restaurants like Rosine's truly emphasize why we ought to embrace and support small business in any way that we possibility can. I look forward to trying more of their vast menu soon, and give them my best recommendations! Give them a try if you're looking for big flavors, big smiles, and even bigger portions. read more

They have a huge cake display of HUGE cakes at the front. It was the Sunday after Thanks giving - we arrived around 930am and it was only 1/2 full. We got a (VERY wobbly) table. and we looked at the specials - My man ordered the (special) steak omelet with pesto. I got the chicken sausage platter (THREE eggs, 2 large sausages, home fries, and toast) I also ordered 1 pumpkin pancake (from the specials list) The entrees came out quickly, The fries were very good - crispy and very salty - but not overly salty. The marble rye that came with the omelet looked home-made and thickly sliced. I was not a huge fan of my sausage (more of a lunch thing than a breakfast thing for my tastes), My pumpkin pancake was MIA - since it was not coming out I said "cancel my pancake I guess" when she came over, and she registered that she forgot it, and said it was coming - it came out after I was already done (I was thinking she would have taken it off the bill, but she did not - we took a lot of leftovers home). $45 plus tip - kinda pricey - but a lot of food, we could have split it. read more

Headline - Great food (hence the two stars), very poor service. It was a weird experience overall. Once we were seated, we decided to keep our masks on until the food arrived. We were chatting away casually when the person who looked like the manager (the only person in plain clothes) swung by our table. He looked at us and said, "are you guys doing ok? you kind of look very serious". There are so many other conversation starters but he decided to choose this one - we let it slide and assured him we were fine. Also, we wondered how one could judge when we were masked? The waiter came by and took our order. We did not catch his name. We were three to the table and he left one cup of water for us. We had to flag him down for water which arrived after a delay. Once the food arrived, he never once checked in on us and walked past us several times. We were enjoying the food and let that slide as well. After asking a few times, we got the check and promptly kept our card in the holder. We kept trying to get his attention and he just did not care. He walked past us, cleaned the table ahead of us, and served several others. After a --very very very-- long wait period, we asked another lady with the scanner to complete the payment process so we could leave. We left a 20% tip despite all this. On the way out, we decided to leave feedback about the less than desirable experience. We explained the whole situation to the manager and he asked us where we were from. He proceeded to tell us that the next time we came to the restaurant we should ask for him so we can get top-class service. Rosine's has HUGE portions for dayysss......a friend of mine took a group of us here for the first time. We went on a busy Saturday night, but was able to get a table within 20 minutes of wait time. I ordered their Cilantro Salmon Special with a Calamari Strips appetizer. The Calamari was great and pretty thick cut like steak fries. The salmon was also great, but I wasn't really a huge fan of the casserole broccoli as my side. It was a little too cheesy. But the REAL treat, of course, was dessert! O-M-G....their Caramel cake was to die for! Our friend who was actually a Monterey local, told us to save room for dessert since Rosine's was known for having the best cakes in the area. Great Tip: If you can't handle their gigantic slices of cake, ask if they have half-portions available. You save money AND calories for anybody watching both their wallets and waistlines. ;-) read more

Wow, can I just say how much I love yelp?! Never disappoints. I was feeling like Eggs Benedict so I searched and I read the reviews on theirs here... omg so so good. I love hollandaise and it was awesome! My hubby got the lasagna (we couldn't decide between the french dip and lasagna based on reviews so we asked the waitress.. An outstanding recommendation!) and it was fresh and layered deliciously. There was plenty of sauce and grated cheese on the plate.. The cup of minestrone soup was really delicious too (came with the lasagna) it had a nice little cheese grated on it and there was a great marriage of the veggies along with some delicious shredded beef.. the broth was so tasty! To finish up, we took the snicker pie and carrot cake slices to go! :) Ok so back almost a year and half later and brought the kids and grandparents this time. I need to say, each plate should state that it could feed 2-3 people. Got the crab avocado Benedict this time, love this hollandaise sauce! ..And of course the minestrone soup.. I went in on 1/2/21 at 5:20 and was deciding what to get. I wanted cake and my BF suggested the key lime pie. The lady got a horrible attitude and slammed the cake case door hard enough to make me jump. My BF asked me if I knew what that was and he said attitude. We purchased the pie got in the car and it was mango key lime pie. Which did NOT taste like key lime at all. I went back in and a nice Hispanic gentleman was at the door. I was afraid to ask for the correct pie so I asked for cake instead. He said OK and went around back and changed it out. Ordered a Oreo cake to go it was delicious totally recommend the bakery items. My husband ordered chicken piccata it wasn't your usual thinly sliced chicken it arrived with 3 chicken tenders in a piccata sauce. I ordered pesto pasta it was ok pesto overload won't be ordering it again. The appetizers were delicious we had onion rings with ranch sauce and calamari. Yuk it tasted all the same the sausage was worse than Costco bottom basement and tasted like everything else. Nothing.had its own flavor. Garlic bread not just bread with butter that had no taste. Ok let's talk about noise I couldn't here my friend across from me the sound of everything was bouncing off all the walls even the person who took our order had to lean in to hear us. When this place was first suggested, I was hesitant. Sometimes places featured on Diners, drive ins and dives aren't worth the hype. But I'm glad I tried it. The minestrone was definitely one of the best. I need to recreate it somehow. Full of flavor and tender shreds of beef. Fried calamari seemed like it was strips cut from a thick steak- no rings or tentacles here. Not that it's a bad thing, it was meaty and tender and came on a bed of fries. It did seem a little more breaded than others I've had, but I'll take fried calamari any way I can get it. I don't do dairy, so that cut my options in half. I ordered the grilled pork chops and swapped the mashed potatoes for rice. The entire dish was delicious; pork was simply seasoned, seemed like salt pepper and a hot grill. It was juicy and one was more than enough- I took the second chop home, along with some of the side carrots. Partner had the pasta with meat sauce, and he said it was also delicious. Baffled by how high this restaurant is rated. Our wait time was past the initial estimated 30 minutes. Additionally, the customer service is lacking (no introduction and no checkin)- we informed the waitress that the one of the booth seats was wet and asked for it to be cleaned but it never was. On top of this the food was disappointing - one of our entrees (lasagna) was undercooked and the other entree (breaded steak) was overcooked. Where do I start! I love that I was able to check in early from the yelp app. When we got there there was a wait. A local behind me asked if I'd eaten there before. I hadn't because we were visiting Monterey with the kids. Well he told me it was worth the wait. We didn't wait long however for a Friday night just about 10-15 minutes. The dessert case snacks you in the face right when you walk in and everything looks amazing. The hostesses were both friendly. Our server was excellent. Her name is Airyn and she was super friendly to my kids, very attentive friendly and sweet, a great server. My husband ordered the salmon picatta. We were surprised because not only was it plated with rice and carrots but also a delicious broccoli casserole that I wish I had the recipe for it was that good. I ordered the homemade lasagna which I literally could not stop eating it was so so delicious. They had a extensive kids menu that included corn dogs, cheese pizza, chicken strips and fries. All of the food was delivered hot. Overall a great experience.
