We held a private event at Rosso Vino recently. Ken and Joe were very accommodating to our needs for this special occasion. Ken went above and beyond to make sure we had exactly what we wanted. Rosso Vino is a must have in a town already full of great restauarants. Joe and his team are always on their game, and the constant rotation of specials coupled with a menu replete with Italian goodness mandates frequent visits. Tonight we did take out with some special requests which were gladly prepared. The flounder and filet mignon were gems and even the adjoining truffle mashed and sauteed veggies were special. Clam chowder and the Rosso Vino salad served as amazing starters. The only "problem" with Rosso Vino is that is doesn't have more seats...but don't let that hold you back as you will always be made to feel well accommodated! read more

What is it with restaurant owners that think their kitchen is infallible? How many times have you heard "no one else ever complained". Maybe because you get in people's face with an attitude taken from a Scorsese movie? My wife got fish. Truffle mashed potatoes? Did it revert to 1980 and no one told us? Stuffing on TOP of the potatoes, with the fish on top of that. Dog food. Add in an obsequious waiter, Uncooked calamari ("do you want to go in the kitchen and show our chef how to make it?) and it's the recipe for another crap meal in the New Haven area, priced like they're in Manhattan. People go there because they give you mounds of food. Everyone had a take out box. Reverse of the old joke, "the food sucks and the portions are small"... I've driven past this place dozens of times and finally had the opportunity to go for dinner. I went with a friend who was staying at an air bnb down the street. It was a last minute decision to get dinner and I'm glad we did. With no reservations, we were seated within a couple of minutes inside in a corner near the front window. There was a family at the next table and as adorable as most think their kids are, I'd rather not sit near them when I'm having dinner. Thankfully there were no tantrums or food throwing. I don't remember all of the drinks on the drink specials menu, but they all sounded great. I had wine and my friend had a special drink that she raved about. Dinner was scallops with sautéed spinach and some potatoes. These components sound basic but the presentation / plating was a nice surprise. Flavors were really really good. Exactly what I was hoping. Dessert was also well plated and delicious. Good, strong coffee. This is already too long, but overall it was a good experience, very good food, pleasant wait staff (laid back but on point, which I prefer over effusive and imposing), quick service, mostly quiet, and right up the street from the water. Parking can be a challenge. Small side streets. Look for homemade signs that ask you not to park in certain spots. I wasn't towed. Not even sure if that's really an issue. The only real drawback was there were partitions set up between some tables but not between our table and the next table (which was less than four feet away.) I probably should have said something about it, but I felt like I shouldn't have had to-- there should be partitions between all seated tables, not just some. It was just about a bit before 8:30 walked in to the restursnt which looked lovely we waited at the hostess desk for a moment only to have a young many come out and tell us that the chief / Owner said they are not seating anymore they have been there all day and are not excepting anymore tables we said the website said open until 10pm, it's not even 9 o'clock. Went for a 70th birthday diner. Mariano our waiter was great, very attentive. The food was served at a nice pace. Loved the bread and oil (up scaled from the butter). Nice touch. I honestly don't know why I just came here for the first time, I've driven past it so many times, but this will now become one of our favorite happy hour places! Quite small, it's tucked right in that corner of Short Beach by the little post office. It's not a big bar but it's a convivial atmosphere, filled with locals who seem to know each other and the bartender. Great neighborhood vibe. The service was friendly and efficient, we felt welcomed. I had an exquisite Espresso Martini, my compatriot had a Chocolate Martini they made just for her. We had a couple of small plates, Sachetini in sage brown butter, was delicious, perfect. The polenta with tomato sauce also wonderful. There is a charming patio out front in warmer weather. All the tables eventually filled up in the dining room and the plates going out looked just delicious with clean, modern plating. We went for Short Beach Neighbor Monday, reservations are a must! The addition of an attendant for valet parking was also fantastic as there is a shortage of parking on nearby beachy narrow streets. The waitstaff was attentive my lemon drop martini chilled and delicious. Our food was great as was the sorbet for dessert, I left with leftovers lunch for the following day. Did not live up to its hype or its prices. One of our party had the caprese salad and the tomatoes were tasteless. Yes, tomatoes are tasteless at this time of year; don't serve them. And our pear/gorgonzola salad was a disappointment; the pears also were tasteless (underrripe) and the lettuce was in enormous pieces that were too tough to cut and eat comfortably. the rest I think was fine and their creme brulee is excellent. read more

I remember Joe from Adriana's and heard he was opening his own restaurant in which I was excited to experience. I will admit it was challenging getting a reservation when Rosso Vino opened in 2016, there was no openings or time slots available to get in. I tried several times, then COVID happened, then "timed seating's" started and when I called, the only available seating's available were 5:30pm and 8pm. 5:30pm is too early and 8pm is way to late to eat. Plus, we travel in from Moodus, CT. Timed seating's is a major turn off not only for me but our group of people. We travel in large groups and bring a large bill to all venues we travel too. I'm not being rushed out or timed while I'm out for the evening and spending money. We backed off Adriana's and Good Fella's due to these reasons. I'm not at a wedding! Let's get Back to my wonderful review to Rosso Vino. I found out that my God-daughter (niece), Jasmine was working here and told her how difficult it was to get a reservation and she told me when we were ready, she would set it up for us and she did! We FINALLY GOT TO EXPERIENCE ROSSO VINO this past Saturday, September 24th. We had a table of 6 to celebrate my husband's birthday. It was the best first time experience! I didn't know they had a bar, it is small but fits at least 6 chairs. We love bar seating when we go out. Good to know for next time! The dining room area is small, a tad congested but cozy at the same time. Parking is not easy but they offer valet parking. We all ordered multiple appetizers. Impressed that they didn't crowd our table all at once, they brought them out on a timely manner. Did I mention the SERVICE? We had NIKKO or NICO? Loved him, adorable, great smile and paid attention to detail of our needs and wants. Other servers would come by and pick up dirty dishes, change out your silverware - wow impressive! We made, cancelled, remade reservations for a large group, but the staff (maybe owners) were super considerate and didn't get upset over all the iterations. Thankfully, we were able to make it to Rosso Vino and had a spectacular meal. Food was delicious! Also, no one should fret at all about parking.
