The "Palloncini" were cheese-filled bread twists and they were really tasty. The appetizer wasn't too garlicky and I was happy with the generous portion size and dipping sauce. Leonardo's Pizza's reopening prompted me to revisit another old classic pizza place - Rotolo's. I checked out their original location here in Grandview about a week ago. It's been years since my last visit and now? I'm a fan again. Medium Mushroom for $11.75. Came with plenty of cheese and mushrooms, although they could have used a little more mushrooms. It has a really great tasting crust which was a combination of chewy and crispy. It's that crust where you get the crunch on the outside and then the chewiness is inside. They catered my daughters bridal shower. Food was excellent, hot and delivered on time. We ordered lesagna with meat sauce, meatless rigatoni with meatballs on the side ( those went first!), salad and bread ( which arrived warm). The choices were; (a) VERDURA - veggie pizza medium; (b) MAMA Rotolo's tossed salad with vinagarette and; (c) Veggie sub. Pick-up time was 25 minutes and I arrived to a piping hot array of food. I remembered going to Rotolo's on 5th Ave., when I worked in the area 25 years ago. It's still a carry out in the same location, but a bit better looking. Unfortunately the pizza is not better. I had heard that what made the pizza so good in the old days was a Vulcan oven. That must have aged out of use, and sad to say, the pizza dough was awful--dry and hard around the outer 2 inch perimeter. Too bad. It used to be so very good. read more

The absolute BEST PIZZA SHOP in Columbus. My husband (Eric - Colorado Mtn Sports) has been eating pizza from this shop since the late '70s. Our family tradition is that we have pizza on almost all game days and every Tuesday :). The ingredients are the highest quality and they don't cheap out on anything. STILL THE BEST ...!!! My parents used to bring us here in the mid-1970's when I was a child. I loved Rotolo's pizza then, and I still love it now. Maybe I even love it even a little more now because I'm the parent and I get to decide which toppings get ordered, rather than having to compromise with my sisters. :-) The crust is delicious. The sauce is tangy and full of real tomato flavor. The cheese tastes like real mozzarella - salty and cheesy - not that cheap, tasteless stuff so many pizza joints seem to use these days. Toppings are generous. Service is still friendly. Their prices aren't the cheapest, but who wants the cheapest pizza...?!? Instead, I want the best pizza we can find. The location (of this, the original Rotolo's) has never gotten bigger and never changed at all. It still looks exactly the same as it did through my 9 or 10 year old eyes. Love Rotolo's. Although pricey, Rotolo's is definitely one righteous pizza joint. much has written about how excellent their pizza is, and having eaten there as many times as I have, I can vouch for all of it. Every element of their pizza, from the cheese all the way down to the texture of the crust, is of the highest order of ingredients. What really got me hooked on Rotolo's was the crust, which is tender, chewy, and just garlicky enough to whet your appetite for more every time you bite in to it. The taste is distinct without being overbearing or leading you to believe that you wreak of a pizza shop for days after digging in. On a very rare occasion, I decided to get to share a lasagna dinner with a friend that had eaten pizza far too often in the days leading up to the situation. The meal included bread sticks and a salad and was well worth the 8-9 we paid for it. It's definitely more than enough food for one person, and it was no surprise that it was delicious as well. There was visible grease around the edges of the lasagna, but everything else about it was top notch, just like the pizza. If you're curious about what Rotolo's has to offer, I'd recommend calling in an order on a Tuesday, as they are currently offering large one-topping pizzas for either $10 or $11 dollars. I will never order from them again. This has time was the third time that the person that took the order has not turned it in. When I arrived on time for the pickup I was told that they could not locate the order. I had to provide proof of the time I called. Then the person taking the order said it was because there were 3 listings with my name and phone number so that was why-I asked how would that make a difference when it was the same name and phone number. The he came back that it was the other person that was new-I asked if he was training him and he said yes -So then I said he should have been checking the orders. He said oh well and wanted to know if I wanted to order/ I said yes an hour ago. I then placed the order with his attitude that it was my fault and waited the additional half hour. When the i guess was the assistant manager handed me my order I explained to him I order at least once a week and would not be returning. His response Ya I know I recognize you. I wanted to grab something to eat after my hair appointment at Salon Local. So I looked at maps and saw this place right next door and I love pizza so decided to give it a try. I had never heard of it before but the Yelp pictures looked like my style of pizza. It was pretty good! It's "thin" crust style but it's on the thicker side for thin crust. Perfectly crispy crust and edge pieces. It's definitely one of those places that puts a TON of cheese on the pizza which I already figured based on the pictures. Not sure leftovers will heat up to taste as great as it was fresh (because of the amount of cheese), but I'm sure it will be decent! Good amount of sauce. I got pepperoni and pineapple and I do wish they have put a smidge more pineapple on it. As someone else mentioned some of the edge pieces have less cheese, but honestly it's "crust" and the variety of super cheesy pieces and crispier pieces was nice! This is Italian food. Not made on a conveyor. Not made in three minutes by a robot. I know the Rotolo's history, growing up in the Grandview area. I remember Papa Rotolo teaching his kids the business. This is the standard for all pizza. They have never let me down on any order I have placed. This is a clean restaurant with quality and customer service as its top priority. The people behind the counter are awesome. You can tell they like what they do which is rare. The food awesome. Small batches made by hand. Momma still controls the quality. Dominic watches everything with an eye for quality. Thank god we have this place. You want to know what other restaurants are trying to copy. This is it. We don't live in the area any longer. However when we drove by to my family's house. My fussy eater asked me to stop in. Good thing we ordered a lot. Pizza was spot on. The meatballs, the sauce, the buns, full of flavor. This is the flavor you want in food. This is my all time favorite takeout pizza. I first tasted Rotolos in the summer of 2000 and couldn't believe it's perfect flavor. Sauce is a big deal for me when determining how much i like a pizza. This sauce is the perfect amount of sweet and spicy. Sicilian style. The crust is hand made. The ingredients are always fresh. And they bake it perfectly so the crust is crispy and the edges of the cheese are brown. Over the years I moved to Toledo, back to Columbus and then to Cleveland. When I get a craving for Rotolos, I will drive two hours each way JUST TO GET A PIZZA FROM THIS SPOT. I've learned over the years to pick up a couple pizzas while I'm here and freeze one. I will also get a quart of sauce to take home. Everything on their menu is Sicilian perfect. If you get a chance, also try their spaghetti dinners or lasagna dinners.
