I passed by this place for the first year plus after we moved to the neighborhood. It's a shame I wasted so many opportunities. From the exterior, I imagined a greasy spoon where the same aged patrons have been seated since the Eisenhower administration. It seems as though I may have been correct once upon a time, but this is no longer the case. Auntie B's has an extensive and unique breakfast menu that far exceeds (but doesn't omit) the traditional. I can personally attest to the greatness of the roast beef hash, apple cinnamon granola pancakes, and simple-yet-not-to-be-overlooked bacon & eggs w/ potatoes. We don't often go out for breakfast. Even if the price is right, the aggravation and disappointment are not worth it. Auntie B's is a welcome exception. read more

Undercooked egg whites, crumb-filled booths, and lipstick-stained coffee mugs are usually what comes to mind when I think of eating breakfast at a diner. However, though this may be the case in many establishments throughout Boston, Rox Diner in West Roxbury has differentiated itself by consistently surpassing customers' culinary expectations. Though originally named "Auntie B's", this sixteen-seat, two-booth diner, recently re-branded itself "Rox Diner" . However, despite a few modern changes in the décor, and a swanky new sign outside, its appeal remains the same: great food, wonderful price, and homey service. They did, however, make a few changes to the menu, infusing it with personality and catchy category titles such as "If it ain't yolk don't fix it" for their various egg specials, and " 'Lettes Go!" for their three-egg omelette options. Luckily, all of the old favorites are still there. "The Isabela," with its one egg, two sausages or two pieces of bacon, a pancake, and a generous portion of heavenly home fries (only $5.95) is still my go-to order. However, I always order the egg over-easy, and yet, I'm still impressed with how the egg-white lovingly envelopes the deliciously runny yolk inside. I also go for their bacon because the always perfectly-crisp bites match the home fries splendidly. Finally, and most importantly (this truly is an insider's tip), offer to pay $1 extra to trade their plain pancake for the chocolate, banana, and mascarpone pancake. This pancake alone is reason enough for me to name my first-born child Isabella. If, however, you're looking for a healthier breakfast, the multitude of egg-white omelette options is sure to keep you happy. Try the "South Beach" ($8.95), which comes stuffed with spinach, tomato, and Swiss cheese, and is served with your choice of fresh fruit or yogurt with granola. Or try one of their political breakfast sandwiches, such as the "Jackie O" (Zucchini omelette sandwich with choice of cheese on peasant bread, served with fresh Fruit - $6.95), or the "JFK" (two eggs, Swiss, bacon and mushrooms on peasant bread, served with home fries - $6.95). Combine that with their fresh squeezed orange juice, and you've got yourself a breakfast that will have you smiling all day long. Not to be overlooked, however, is their daily specials menu, which, if you're lucky, will feature the crab cake Benedict ($12.75). Now, I'm not usually a lover of crab cakes (most have too much breading), but Rox's duo of crab-filled patties actually taste as good as they look. Top that with two perfectly-poached eggs, homemade hollandaise, and a sprinkle of large, juicy capers, and you've got a dish good enough for "Top Chef". The worst part about Rox's Diner, though, is that it's rather small and can have more than a twenty minute wait; unless you're a small party of two, which are usually seated within five to ten minutes. If you do find an empty seat, however, and no one is ahead of you, feel free to sit down, as it may take a few minutes for the waitress to seat you, since they're usually scurrying around and tending to guests. Once at a table, the service is great, with servers exuding a familiar neighborly friendliness, and a caring quickness when it comes to refilling your water or your coffee (which is also pretty darn good). So, if you're looking for a place delicious enough to bring mom out to brunch, or casual enough for your little brother and his baseball team, this is the place. I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars for Rox. On the one hand, everything I've tried there has been tasty. But on the other hand, when ordering with other people the food has a tendency to arrive at different times (i.e. I get my food, 2 minutes later someone else gets there's, 5 minutes later the third person gets their meal). The atmosphere is cozy, but cozy becomes cramped and crowded when this place is busy. The service is friendly and the menu offerings are ample. The prices are higher than your average breakfast/brunch/lunch joint but you get what you pay for. I'd rather pay more and come to Rox than go to the Westbury. If you're by yourself and looking for breakfast/brunch/lunch in West Roxbury you won't find much (if any) better than Rox. If you're with other people or claustrophobic you many want to look elsewhere. read more

Rox Diner has got all your brunchalicious, morning-after favorites covered with American-sized portions of greasy carbs and starches (home fries, eggs bennies, French toast, you name it) but also some fantastic and more unique options like the avocado/pear omelette, which veers away from the usual flavor combinations and is quite delicious. Visiting Boston for my sister's graduation so decided to come here for breakfast since we landed at 6am. We stood there for at least 10 minutes before anyone even greeted us and someone finally asked how many. We gave the waitresses the benefit of the doubt since the place was almost full and they looked busy. We told her 5 and she said there might be space in the back, let me take a look. (The place is small, so we can see the whole dining area!) They made us wait another 10 minutes and another waitress goes, "You know it's open seating right?" I looked at her and told her what the previous waitress said. She said oh. We said forget it and left. I'm not making any assumptions here, but I will say this. The whole restaurant was filled with White patrons. And then you have a group of Asians at the door. Didn't try the food and will never come back. read more

I frequent Auntie B's weekly, however, I was pleasantly surprised after returning to my favorite breakfast place after a two week vacation, to find completely renovated. It looked fantastic, absolutely amazing, (not that it was not fantastic before). They have added more seating, painted the walls, and have made the cutest breakfast bar with granite counter tops. It really gives the place that modern feel, with that traditional diner comfort. Thankfully they did not change the food, as it is still Fantastic! I am a huge fan of the Onion Rings to go with a Saturday brunch. They also make fantastic waffles and pancakes (Strawberry, Banana, Chocolate Chip, is my favorite). The staff there is very friendly, and you leave feeling like you've known them for years, and you cant wait to go back! read more

there's so much to like about the rox diner. it's fun, it's cheap, the food is great, and the owners are pretty much rock-stars. they used to have these cool menus that had comic book covers on the front and ads from the 50s on the inside, so that grandmothers would be perusing the menu and tell the waittress that they wanted the guitar lessons advertised for 50 cents for the grandson and then be really disappointed when they were told that the ads were for show and no longer real, having been 60 years since they were printed. maybe that's why they changed to a stream-lined menu? either way, it's small, cute, fun and reliable and i like the family-vibe they have going on. i've also walked through the kitchen sometimes to use the ladies (room - to clarify) and it was teeny but very clean. and that's when you get to interact with the spitfire cooks on their spitfire grill! it's my favorite breakfast place and i would recommend it to anyone. but just a heads up, i don't know that more than 5-6 people would be seated comfortably so maybe only bring friends you really really like, and not everyone you've ever met. read more

Probably the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. Biggest downside are the long waits on weekends. Better wake up early or plan a late breakfast if you don't want to wait with a ton of your best friends. Honestly, this is the greatest breakfast place I've ever gone to. This is the only place that I've ever specifically paid my compliments to the chef. I had blueberry mascarpone and pecan pancakes, and let me just tell you, I don't normally like pancakes, and they were INCREDIBLE. The home fries are TO DIE FOR and the hospitality is just amazing. I go here at least once every two weeks--very organic, very tasty. It's worth the wait at the door! I have made purchases at both the Newton and West Roxbury locations. The best thing I can say about Rox Diner is they are average average. Tasting is lacking and variety is also MIA. The staff were attentive and welcoming. Nice surprise for dinner! I'd eaten here years ago when it was Auntie B's but hadn't been back and was surprised to see the "Open for Dinner" sign outside a while back so last Saturday my friends and I stopped in before heading to town. I had the Bangers and Mash and honestly it was as good as any I've ever eaten in Ireland so I'll be back! My friends had the Vegetable stir fry and a Turkey Club, both enjoyed those and again were surprised that a diner served such great dinner food:-) I will recommend it to everyone and wish them great luck with the evening crowds. read more

GREAT breakfast place! My wife and in stumbled upon this place the other day, looking for a simple diner for a good diner breakfast. We were not disappointed. The food was very tasty and the fresh squeezed OJ was fantastic (plus you got a lot for your money, I was surprised at the size of glass for the fresh squeezed juice.) I love this place. Good diner food, that never seems too greasy to me. I love the healthier options for yogurt and granola with local bread. We always plan to get there before 9 on the weekends and have thus far not had to wait, but the place always has a line shortly after that. Service is fine. It is a pretty rushed feeling, but there is a line so I usually don't mind. Def not a come and hang out all morning kind of place - you'll get a lot of dirty looks from staff and those waiting. Awesome local spot. I go here regularly more than any other place in the city. The pancakes and french toast are good. The avocado, pear and goat cheese omelette is a must have. The potatoes are good. The Fornax peasant bread is good. The service is always friendly. Glad they serve dinner now. The burgers are good. All in all just a solid little spot. I'd gone by this place many times and it always has a line out the door. Then on New Year's Day we wanted a lazy morning, so I looked up brunch in our area on Yelp and Rox Diner was top of the list! We were extremely lucky to find two seats at the bar because this place was packed! There was a long-ish line, but all the other people were in groups so they (very kindly) told us to skip ahead and take the bar seats. I got the banana and nutella french toast, which was enormous but I finished it (with help...). It was very tasty. I also got the freshly squeezed orange juice (next time, I'll get the large size because it's huge) and grapefruit juice. My boyfriend got the Irish Benny, which is eggs benedict with Irish bacon (rashers). It was very nice also. He got a coffee too. The menu is large and there are plenty of things to choose from. The waitstaff were great- efficient, attentive and friendly- and the place has a very nice feel to it with a nice murmur of people but nothing too loud. We are definitely going back soon! read more

I'm torn about how to rate this place because the food was pretty good (but a bit greasier than I'd like) but the service was.......yeah....My friends and I tried this place both this past Saturday and Sunday and basically had similar serving experiences. Some pros are that the atmosphere is super cute, very old-school diner feel. The food comes out relatively quick and for the most part, it's pretty good. Cons, it's extremely hard to flag the waitresses down (as mentioned by a prior review below) despite the incredibly small square footage of the diner and the fact that there can't be more than 15 tables total (amongst 3-5 waitresses/bussers). The one thing that had happened which didn't sit to well with us was that the booth right next to us sat down a few minutes after us, even though we had been waiting for 30-minutes prior (they had just walked in about 5 minutes before sitting) yet by the time we ordered our DRINKS (not food), they had their food served to them. I'm no expert at restaurant operational theory but I would figure that it's a first come first serve basis. My friend speculated that it might be because they were of an older demographic. Either way, unless the person is dying of a diabetic coma (which could actually happen to me seeing as I'm diabetic), I fully believe in the first come first serve mantra. Overall, it was an ok experience. I don't know if we'd go back there just because little things kept happening that would bother us (it would be incremental) like forgetting to bring things we'd ask for, which is normal but all these things add up after one bad experience. I was very excited about Rox Diner when I moved to West Roxbury. I had it several times, and it never wowed me. It's way too small for a popular diner where diners are scarce. The wait staff kind of seem to ignore the people waiting when it's busy, and it was always pretty unclear as to whether people should seat themselves or wait to be seated, so it's a little stressful to wait for a table. Everyone gets really edgy and impatient. As for the food, I would give it 3-4 stars depending on the dish. Nothing spectacular, but some good things on the menu. The reason I'm giving the restaurant two stars is because the breakfast sausage I ordered last time I was there was mostly raw. Very pink, soft, mushy, and...raw. I haven't been back since. I'm sorry to abandon a place after one mistake, but that one killed any desire I had to go back. read more

Don't let this place fool you. You will feel very cramped, overpay, and eat pancakes that aren't cooked with care. I've been there multiple times (not on my own volition) and find the place to be overrated. The silver lining: Their bacon is the best I've ever had. I won't deny it. I don't know how they prepare it or where they buy it from, but they are huge meaty tendons seasoned to perfection. If only everything was as good as their bacon.... They also serve fresh squeezed OJ which is always a plus and chocolate milk. But again. Unless your in the mood for a classic meal composed of only bacon, freshly squeezed OJ, and chocolate milk, you will probably walk away feeling disappointed.. read more

Not my fav type of brunch style or food here, but I like the staff here. So the rating is more for my overall experience here. After I ordered the bolly egg benny, I noticed that the eggs are too well cooked. When I told the waitress about it, she immiediately agreed to get me two extra eggs. The portion is good here and you definitelly feel you pay for a fair price. My friends all like the food here so I think for me, it is not the food that has issues but I am just not used to meaty American breakfast. This place is awesome. The food is fresh and the staff is friendly. We had the big rig and hash omelette. The blueberry pancakes were legit.
