Fantastic breakfast. Eggs are always done right, everything is fresh. Except the Fresh Squeezed OJ, which I've seen come out of a retail carton that says Fresh Squeezed on it...but if you can get past that (coffee is decently strong and flavorful), it's always worth the wait. I almost always get a breakfast item, tried the Notorious B.U.R.G. once. It was just okay, or maybe my expectations were set way too high by their breakfast. Solid burger of slightly large size, done to my liking, fries were perfectly crisp, and for some reason there was a mountain of shredded lettuce that made the bun look like a Cheerio. I feel like there could have been some more flavor there. I'll have to branch away from breakfast and see what the rest of the menu is like (but no one else seems to). Auntie B's (or "the B" as we like to call it), is by far the best breakfast establishment in the greater Boston area. With grilled cheese (and tomato) sandwiches to die for, roast beef hash that tastes like steak & cheese, and every type of pancake you could imagine (try the banana mango), you really can't go wrong here. Not only is the food delish, the waitresses are amazing: quick with gingerale refills on a 'rough' Sunday morning, and always patient with picky order-ers/eaters. The rating: I went into this review thinking two stars, but the more I wrote, the more I decided two stars was one star too high, so I unfortunately have to go with one star. Why we chose to eat here: We happened to see it on the Phantom Gourmet, and Sarah was like a rabid pit bull, she decided she wanted to eat there and no amount of cajoling was changing it. The food: I ordered both the hash and egg breakfast as well as the banana and cream cheese stuffed French toast. The hash and egg breakfast came with a ton of hash, two eggs (I added a third), toast and home fries. Of the entire breakfast the highlight was the home fries, they were like my dads in style but not in quality, as my dad does a much much better job. I also enjoyed the toast, but for a place that touts using real butter on the menu I was expecting better than those little yellow butter packets to be served with my breakfast. I requested my eggs over easy but they ended up being fairly overlooked with minimal yolky goodness for my hash and toast. The hash, where to begin, if it was house made, you could have fooled me. It tasted like the Hormel hash I had as a kid, terribly over salted and mushy. Granted, I should have asked if it was homemade hash, and didn't. I had assumed that because they used homemade hash at their Newtonville location they would here as well, this is why we never ever assume anything. Let my high blood pressure be a reminder to everyone. Overall below average breakfast. My stuffed French toast was better but still I felt a bit like the wool was placed over my eyes. First of all it's not stuffed but layered, piece of French toast, small smear of cream cheese, few sliced bananas, slice of French toast, small smear of cream cheese few sliced bananas, slice of French toast....TADA...stuffed French toast....um...no. I admit it was tasty but over half the French toast had no "filling", nor did the syrup taste anything like "real maple syrup" which again is what is touted on the menu, unless Aunt Jemima opened up a "family farm in Monroe, VT". Again, disappointing, especially for the $10 price tag. Oh and I got a glass of milk which was was served unfortunately warm, how hard is it to serve cold milk. That is just strikes me as a bit lazy. Sarah ordered the Rox which consisted of eggs, home fries, toast, bacon, sausage and a "short order" of French toast. Again, it almost seems like the menu is suggesting what you may get, as opposed to telling you what to expect, as we both imagine a short order would be more than one piece of French toast but no, she received one piece of french toast that was incidentally also smaller than any piece on my full order, so short order actually means "one smaller than normal piece" at the Rox Diner in case you were wondering. Besides that she also felt it was horribly dry. Beyond the french toast debacle she was happy with how her eggs were cooked (sunny side up). The toast was "uneventful" as she put it, and she would have liked jelly at the table which is pretty standard. She felt some of her potatoes were underdone but otherwise tasty. The bacon was her highlight which she did thoroughly enjoy, but heck, it's bacon, if you screw up bacon close the doors and open a laundromat. Finally, the sausage was supermarket sausage, enjoy. The service: Service was alright, we stood around for a few minutes waiting to be seated even though there were empty tables and a waitress told us she would be right with us, she then proceeded to take orders and handle other tables. Not a huge deal but bears mentioning. After being seated we never felt rushed, always a good thing, especially at a turn em and burn em diner. It was also acceptably clean but the back of the booth our table butted up against was dirty and the salt shaker was greasy. The final rundown: One star may see a bit low based on the review but when I feel lied to by the restaurant I am patronizing it leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. We won't be going back, I suggest you take my advice and don't waste your time or money here. I don't mean to be harsh but when there are so very many breakfast joints to choose from you just don't need to bother with the Rox Diner. I was very disappointed at not only the breakfast, but also the service this morning at the Rox Diner West Roxbury. First of all there was an hour wait from the time our breakfast order was taken to actually getting it served Cold to us~~~ yes Cold! My poached eggs and homefries weren't even lukewarm, and my Moms egg benny was served cold on burnt english muffins(alll black on top!) I couldn't find the waitress, and she never came back to check on things, so I stood up to get her attention, and when i explained the problem, she just looked with the 'Oh Well' , and I said the least you can do is get my mom lightly toated english muffins! well that took another 30minutes to come out!... never offered any coffee refills... I always come to the Rox at least once a week, and I have to say that will be my last time there. The waitress didn't care, and I was really shocked b/c Im not used to that kind of service or lack of it at the Rox. It seems like they have new waitstaff, and may also have new chef and it clearly shows. I paid $30 for breakfast for 2 and it was not only expensive, but not even enjoyable! read more

My boyfriend and I like to wake up on Sundays and go have a nice hearty breakfast. We decided to try this place since he lives close by. It was crowded (it is a small place) so we figured it had to be good. I ordered the smoked salmon, spinach, and chives omelette (sounds delicious, right?!). Our meals came out, I looked at my plate, and thought "seriously?!"... for 13.95! My omelette was TINY.. probably about half the size of any omelette I have gotten at any diner! Not to forget, there were not even a small handful of homefries on the side of the plate! I was hungry and a little let down by the size, but dug in... the homefries were good, crunchy just how I like but the omelette was a huuuge letdown. There was very little salmon in it, a huge glob of cream cheese, a couple spinach leaves and some chives. Even with my 2 pieces of toast, I was still hungry.. had to eat some of my boyfriend's corned beef hash. Also, we went on a warm day so the front door remained open to cool the place off--not a good idea. There were flies all around us to the point of annoyance! recently tried the Rox diner for Breakfast on a weekday morning. The place is small and from what I gather you usually have to wait to get a seat luckily for my Mom and I we didnt have to wait. My mom had pancakes and bacon whcih she said were very good, and I had the Boston Scrambler which was eggs cheese ham and served with toast and homfries. Everything was freshly prepared and the homefries were very good. We both had coffee which was served hot and were offerred refills. I will be returning again. read more

Best place for breakfast (haven't tried it for lunch, but sure it's just as good). I don't want the fancy stuff, just plain old bacon and eggs (or french toast/pancakes). Three times is a charm, except for the Rox Diner. We tried this place a few weeks ago, twice, and it wasn't bad at all, so we went back again a third time. Today was probably our last visit. It was terrible and I left starving! Not a great feeling when you are looking forward to a nice breakfast out on a holiday Monday! We sat down (at the cramped tables against the wall) and waited over a half hour after placing our order for our meal; others were served earlier, so maybe the regulars at the counter get priority? No explanation from the wait staff; no refills on coffees while we waited, no comment at all!--just a long wait. Western omellete was terrible---overcooked, barely fit on the plate; maybe they ran out of eggs and fixing's? Or maybe they decided to decrease the normal portion size for an omelette? Barely filled us up. Home fries? About five cubes from an overfriend potato--not even a full potato!--again, they must have ran out in the back as the side portion was inadequate. The toast? Cold. The pancakes? What self-respecting diner can burn them? Rox Diner can. A tall stack? Insults the word stack---inadequate portion. Did they confuse the tall stack with the silver dollar pancakes? When we commented on the portion size, the woman just shrugged and basically said, "so what"--clearly she could care less that we were disappointed in both our small omeltte portion and tiny pancakes (maybe they should use smaller plates to make the portions look bigger?) Seriously, you shouldn't leave hungry after a tall order of pancakes. I did. The last two times we were there, the wait staff was friendly. This time, not so much. No "how is your meal?", "Can we get you anything else?" We guessed that the friendly woman from the past was the owner and may have taken the long weekend off, and left the place with someone to manage. Well, they didn't manage it well. Too bad, as it was good to have a local place for breakfast. Not worth it, and not worth being crammed into one of those little tables for an hour (half an hour of it waiting for your food!). If the attitude had been better, maybe would give it another shot, but not so great food, cramped table, dull and uncaring staff; nothing made it worth the trip. Sorry, Rox. I live for brunch. As a former Somervillian, I was spoiled by my proximity to Sound Bites/Ball Sq. Cafe among others. I was psyched when I saw Rox Diner. I've been there many times since discovering it....sometimes it's been great and other times ok. Service/wait: The hours here are tough...they close at 1 pm on weekends. I'm used to brunch just getting going at that point. The wait is confusing...there is not enough room to wait inside, so a random line forms outside. Someone comes out to take names, but it is often confusing...seems like they don't have a system yet. Once you're in, though, the waitstaff are all really nice. Food: Here's what I've had: Apple/granola pancakes: spot on. Delicious and fluffy. I'd get this every time if I wasn't trying to get to know the menu! Scrambled eggs/bacon/homefries/toast: I don't know why I ordered scrambled eggs-usually I go for things that I can't make myself. They were just ok, but the home fries were great....not greasy at all, with a nice light/spicy flavor. Fornax health french toast: Very good. Comes with fruit and nuts on top, I believe. I've had bites of their other french toast (challah...or brioche...) and it was decadent! Coffee: just all right. Prices: good. I'll happily make this my neighborhood brunch place! read more

Auntie B's roast beef hash is actually the best hash I have ever had. The Rings of Saturn sandwich is amazing if you are in the need for a great, filling sandwich. The turkey sandwich is great with some honey mustard because it is not processed meat like Boar's Head. The homemade past and potatoes salad is always very good as well. Best breakfast food! Being new to the area my roommate and I (who love breakfast food) tried different places in the area and nothing has compared to the Rox. I highly recommend this place to anyone. It doesn't matter what you order, everything is good. My favorites are the "Italian Job, "Heck of a breakfast sandwich, and their Tahitian french toast (mango stuffed brioche french toast topped with coconut). The peasant toast is so good and my friends are I are addicted to thier home fries! This place does get busy on the weekends, but the service is great and the waitresses are always running around filling up your coffee. They just remodeled the place with new furniture and added booths which is nice. They took away the comic pictures on the walls which I felt gave the place character. O well white walls it is. I always say that I will get something different when I go...maybe I will try the goat cheese, pear & avocado omelet that I've heard so much about! read more

Absolutely yummy food and a great selection. We've been all over the menu and have never been disappointed (french toast is a favorite, as is the poached egg on sourdough bread with mozz). Service is always friendly and efficient. The only downside is that the wait is usually an absolute cluster. Sometimes they take names (and on more than one occasion, they've lost ours), most of the time it's just a line and there really isn't much space to maintain a line leading to inadvertent cutting (I'm assuming those who've cut in line haven't meant it...) and grumbling. It's a tiny space and the food is awesome, so people come en masse....just wish they were able to do a better job of maintaining a waitlist! read more

One of my all-time favorite breakfast places. If you go on a weekend morning you will probably have to wait in line. When you get inside, the place is somewhat crowded because it is small. The waitresses are running a marathon and are efficient, pleasant, but don't have time to hover over you. It's a diner, after all; what- do you expect? The food is very good- excellent quality ingredients, creative takes on standard diner offerings. Worth the wait. My guilty pleasure here is the Irish breakfast with the black & white pudding. This is my favorite place of all time. The food is great, the atmosphere is cozy and the waitresses are attentive. I did not hear any foreign languages coming from the back nor do I see why that would be unpleasant as the last, last reviewer stated. Like, literally why is that even an issue. People have been speaking foreign languages since AT LEAST the early stages of this country when it sucked up the southwest and the Louisiana Purchase and if workers are speaking to each other in a different room, why does that even bother you? Okay, back to the food. The Rox is super super awesome. The portions are fair and everything on their menu is yummy. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Boston.
