This is the best sandwich spot I've had in Seattle, and perhaps the greatest sandwich I've ever had in my life. Their two best sellers are the Italia and Chicken Pesto. I share the common sentiment that the chicken pesto is slightly better, although you won't go wrong with the Italian. The bread is crispy and seasoned to perfection with a blend of herbs. Every ingredient is put together perfectly and you can really taste them individually. The chicken is moist and tender and the pesto spread all over the top piece of bread takes the sandwich to another level. For $11, this is a steal in Seattle. Wait times of up to 20 min to get the sandwich might seem longer than it should be but when you go in, see the way they're made, and the taste the sandwich, it all makes sense. I love a good sandwich, but for some odd reason, I don't really seem to eat them that much. Maybe it's my inability to eat anything in a graceful, non-hot-mess manner, and sandwiches usually end up all down the front of my shirt. Maybe it's the fact that I only really like toasted/melty sandwiches but am loathe to toast them myself. Or maybe it's the fact that outside of the Cuban sandwich realm, a lot of the good sandwiches in Seattle are weirdly expensive for what is supposed to be a simpler, humbler, food thing. Putting all my excuses aside, which are honestly pretty weak, let's move on to the experience I had at Royal Grinders which will probably mean a precipitous increase in sandwich consumption in my life from this day forward. I have been past this place several times, but had no idea it was a sandwich place until a friend mentioned "this amazing sandwich place right by the Lenin statue," and I was like, "Royal Grinders? The place that sounds like it would be the name of some strip joint where everyone wears a crown?" It's a combination of not knowing sandwich terminology and just having my mind in the gutter, but I hadn't put two and two together until then. The storefront itself is pretty cramped, with some counter seating inside but pretty ample table seating outdoors. Since it was still nice outside yesterday when I went, we really enjoyed sitting outside. There are many delicious pre-curated options for the sandwich consumer at Royal Grinders, and also plenty of ways to build your own sandwich. We had the Italian grinder and the pastrami, and waited in anticipation for our sandwiches to come out. It took about ten minutes for our sandwiches to get to us, which I wouldn't consider "fast" food but is totally reasonable for making a sandwich of that quality with the toasting time on top of it. Our sandwiches were really, really, damn good. I mean, top five sandwiches I've ever had in my lifetime. The bread is perfectly crisp without being hard, is somehow flavorful in and of itself, and the combination of all the meat and the pepperoncini and the sauce and everything on my Italian grinder had me sighing happily the whole way through. The pastrami grinder was also freaking amazing with the tang of the sauerkraut to boot. I'm salivating again just thinking about it all. It was also the perfect amount of food, leaving me really satisfied but not quite needing to be rolled back home. And somehow, I didn't end up with the sandwich all over the front of my shirt! The sauce runs down your hand a little bit but it's not tooo messy of an experience. I'd say you could eat one of these things without totally shaming yourself. I disliked my one experience with this place for a few reasons: 1) As a vegetarian, I see *very* few options for me. 2) The sandwich I did get was utterly lacking in any taste. The vegetables didn't seem fresh, there was no seasoning in it, and it tasted smoky, which was weird. What I make at home tastes far better, and especially for their price, it's just not worth it. 3) I really dislike the fact that the people preparing the sandwiches do not (or at least on that day, did not) change their gloves when they switch from making a meat sandwich to a vegetarian sandwich. At Subway, for instance, I can request the person preparing my sandwich to wear new gloves, and they always very gladly comply. I walk by Fremont often and I can't believe how many times I pass this place up. I've had the pastrami grinder and I made my own (just a few different fixin's). Their thick sliced pastrami is simply amazing. The bread amazing with warm toasty feeling to it, with a perfect blend of spices in it. The meat to bread ratio could've been a little better as the bread is just a bit big. This is probably one of the best warm sandwiches you can get in this area of Seattle. I had what has probably been one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had in my entire life at Royal Grinders the other week with my friends The Pho Kings. We just can't seem to get enough of the tasty sandwiches and burgers that Seattle restaurants have on offer in our fair city, and Royal Grinders, in Fremont behind the statue of Lenin has been one of the best. Pastrami, sauerkraut, provolone, swiss, tomato, red onion, black olives, pepperoncini, & mustard all on delicious french baguette. They make their own pastrami and these grinders take some time to make. It took about fifteen minutes for them to make our grinders but every minute was worth the wait. The pastrami is full of the flavor that rules this grinder. All of the other ingredients rightly play second fiddle to that delicious pastrami. The sauerkraut doesn't overwhelm it, the provolone and swiss complement, the pepperoncini's add zing while the mustard brings them all together between that chewy, crispy bread with bite. If you find yourself in the Fremont neighborhood hungering for a great grinder and perhaps a small cup of gelato which they also specialize in then walk on in, place your order and grab a table outside under the statue of Lenin. Royal Grinders has a small window stool seating area, but most of their tables are located outside, so it's perfect for warm weather days. Their offerings aren't fancy (you won't find any imported or artisan/specialty flavor sodas or chips here) but what they do have is delicious. That's it. I'm officially a sandwich whore. Royal Grinders' tastylicious meter is right up there with Paseo, Tat's, and Salumi's. As others have mentioned, they cannot be compared against each other. The types of sandwich from each is equally yummy, but in a different way. Grinder's sandwich is distinctive in its soft, tender, toasted bread. I had both the Italian and Pastrami and they were both good, but the Italian was in a class of its own. The flavor and texture combination of the Italian is to die for. If I could eat these sandwiches for every meal, I would. I've been meaning to write a praising review of this place for years! Royal Grinders was the first meal I ever had in Seattle while visiting back in 2012, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't one of the reasons I ended up moving here permanently...and maybe one of the reasons why I chose the Fremont neighborhood to call my home. Yes, the sandwiches take a while, but so worth it! And yes the lines can get long, but it's a small place! If you're really that impatient, just call ahead and place an order for pickup. Easy peasy. Don't come to Yelp complaining about the time it takes (we're talking like 15 minutes max). Go to Subway if you're that pressed for time. The extra wait is worth the quality that you're going to get. Most of the time, I can't even finish the whole sandwich, which makes for excellent left-overs. I usually order the Italian Grinder with turkey instead of ham (you can thank me later). Incredible. I get emotional just thinking about it. Something about the sauce, the seasoned bread, and the fresh, quality ingredients makes eating the sandwich feel like a spiritual experience. I can't even have a conversation when I'm eating one of their subs because I'm too busy stuffing my face. Of course the sandwiches are life-changing, but what also keeps me coming back is the quality of their customer service. Jay (the owner) actually gives a shit about his business, which is sometimes hard to come by. Day in and day out, Jay is there in the trenches making sure his sandwiches are 100% delicious. He has an impeccable memory for names and is always sure to say hi when I stop in, making me feel like I'm not just a faceless customer who is passing through, but a friend. You just don't get this service often anymore, especially at a sandwich shop. Even if the sandwiches sucked, I'd come back just because of Jay. What I admire so much about this business is that they don't do any sort of advertising. All of their business is generated by word of mouth. This is why anytime I have friends or family in town, or hear about someone who lives in Seattle that has never been, I make time to take them to Royal Grinders. This is by FAR the best Gelato I have had in seattle. Followed by literally, outstanding customer service, their sandwiches too are made with such care and are delicious + 923892 sorts of amazing. (even IF you might have to wait a bit longer for them to make becasue they are toasted in an oven it is wellll worth it) "Home of the free Lenny scoop" goes a longgg way at Royal Grinders. How can you beat a free mini scoop of ice cream upon every visit so you get to try a new flavor?!?!? Oh i know! You can't! They always have original, fun homemade flavors and honestly every time I come here, there will be at least one flavor that I have never tried. Saturday I stopped by around 10:30 and I guess one of the guys that works here plays in a band, and he had his band set up and play outside in the eating area. Excellent sandwich shop with a laid-back but attentive wait staff. Both myself and the lady-friend decided to share a vegetarian sandwich and grab a few cans of soda before we headed down the street to Canal Park to partake in the goodness. Don't expect the speed of Jimmy John's or anything, but we were perfectly content sitting outside in the sun staring at the oh-so-curious patio. (Tons of random little objects plastered into the cement that will catch your eye!) They were nice and brought the sandwich out to us while we were waiting, and off we went. Sandwich = excellent. The bun was not burned, the ingredients were fresh, and everything came together in a terrific taste symphony. What's most frustrating about Royal Grinders is the fact that they aren't Subway... They aren't Quiznos. In case that statement doesn't make sense - let me qualify. Why can't I have a sandwich that is this $*#(ing good on the corner of every fourth block in the city? Is Subway good? Sometimes. Is Quiznos better? Most times. Do either compare to the grinder that is birthed from the talented hands at Royal Grinders? Not even close. The meat is more juicy and tender. I admit it: I saw the Italian Grinder from Royal Grinders on the Foodie 100 list, and I was skeptical. I've come to the realization that geographically relevant sandwich offerings from other cities don't stretch to Seattle in many cases. By that I mean Chicago has hot dogs, Detroit has gyros, Pittsburgh has meat pies, Philly has cheesesteaks, NYC has reubens, Maine has lobster rolls and, yes, Boston has grinders. The reach of Seattle's sandwich food scope seems to make it about as far East as Detroit. It then drops off dramatically in its abilities to replicate a top notch sandwich made famous in an Eastern city - and completely fails by the time it gets to New York or Filthadelphia, so what chance does the city have of making it all the way to the Haaahbah? I mean hell, was it even going to be a real grinder, or just a heated sub? Add in that I used to live in Boston and have had the best grinders anywhere? Well, let's just say the bar was set quite high, and I certainly wasn't going to wager my R2 unit on Seattle being able to make the cut. Hell, I wouldn't even wager a StormTrooper, and you know how little I care about those punks. I am pleasantly surprised to report that the grinders at this place easily make the cut. From the styling of the building to the decor on the inside; replace the statue of Lenin at this place with Elvis, and I might as well be back on campus in Massachusetts. Even the music is the same (and that's a good thing, you classless Lady Gaga loving, Jonas Brothers obsessing, Justin Bieber worshipping freakozoids). From the proper bread choice to the high-quality meats to the proper cooking technique right down to the classic grinder sauce, this thing is as authentic as they come. I'm so pleased after eating this thing that I command the Force to playfully tickle an infant so its mother can enjoy its infectious laughter; I make it move the clouds so the sun will peak out; I even change the modulation of the Deathstar's lasers to instead emit harmless lights tuned to The Wall (look it up, Bieberheads). OK, really all I do is refrain from killing everyone within 4 city blocks and installing Jar Jar as city mayor, which is pretty damn generous of me. Course, Jar Jar might be an improvement over the present guy, but hey... So I'm all about the ambiance, the food, the prices, and the service. So why the 4? Simple: They charge 50 cents to use a credit card there. I can sense some of you pulling away from me here for something so petty (hey, I *am* a Sith lord, after all), but hear me out. For as much as I bitch about restaurants not taking credit cards, this bunches my codpiece even more. It's against the terms of their merchant card processor agreement to do that. I *hate* it when companies do this, and if the sandwiches weren't so damn good I'd probably report it. Well, no, not really: Evil means never being a rat. But it still sucks, no matter how insignificant the fee. So close to joining the 5's, yet so far. That was a frakking good sandwich. Seriously. Pre-Cupid Undie run and I realize I'm hungry. Should probably eat before running and drinking...and CW wanted a sandwich. This place seemed like the obvious choice. We walk in to a small, cute store with friendly staff members who explain their menu. Famous for their grinders, obvs. We couldn't decide on which on to get so we decided for the french dip instead. Yeah, I know. I'm a dork. Anywho, as their sign says it takes a little time -- but why complain? You are getting a hot, toasty, cheese melted to ooey-gooey perfection sandwich. And I have to say -- this is one of the best "traditional" french dips I have ever had. The aus jus was rich and flavorful (enough for CW to drink our leftovers), the bread toasted and sturdy enough to handle tons of meat, cheese, and jus, and the seasonings used on both the meat and aus jus complimentary and not over bearing. I did come across some super fatty/semi gristle-y pieces of meat. Easily picked out but not super pleasant. It did not detract from my overall sandwich experience though. The dude who runs this joint is a true artisan. It's a pleasure to watch someone who truly has pride in what he does; even if it's a sandwich; an effin' delicious one at that. His grinders take a while to make but each slice of meat, cheese, veggie is meticulously placed in perfect ratio then baked. Oh so tasty. What could be better than gelato and toasted sandwiches in the shadow of Lenin in the heart of Fremont. Hungry and wandering, we stumbled here on a cold spring day. The little one loved the colors of the gelato. But I was more interested in their sandwiches. Their staff seemed very cool. The sandwich maker was on the ball. Fast and friendly. The gelato guy was a bit aloof. Not sure if it was the teenage girls that threw him off his game because the third request for a cone for the gelato finally sank in. Regardless, the sandwiches were warm, stacked high and delicious. The free soda was a nice touch. And the little one loved having a cone of chocolate to indulge in. I have never had a grinder before in my life. Well, not that I can recall at least. There was one place in my home town that sold them, but my family didn't frequent that place. Plus I don't think I would have been likely to order one there with my juvenile palette. All that being said: Royal Grinders, ythou mhake anth awthsum .. *swallows* omg this is so good... *takes another bite* I got the Italian Grinder. That was one of the tastiest sandwiches I've had in my entire life. The bread was toasted so perfectly and yet it was so soft inside. The ingredients flowed so well together. It was just the right amount of meat. It was .... wow. Even Samuel L. Jackson would order that grinder and say: "Mmm, this IS a tasty grinder!" They give you the option of chips or a drink with their sandwiches (including grinders). I went with the Tim's Cascade jalapeno chips. 2 points for serving those things! The staff was very friendly, and very helpful. We walked in and since I guess we looked lost, the guy running the register offered some assistance in explaining the menu in a brief but helpful manner. I heart pineapples and I heart basil. But pineapples AND basil? Apparently, that's a flavor combination I had no idea could be so delizioso together. That's right, it's all about the PINEAPPLE BASIL SORBET - boo yah! With visible flecks of basil and juicy chunks o' pineapple in every bite. When it comes to Gelato - oh I get realllllll picky. Chalk it up to my spoiled quarter spent in Rome but it's been near impossible to find anything that comes close. Royal Grinders definitely isn't the same but puts up a good fight especially with their intriguing flavors. They also have a Strawberry Jalapeno that was just too funkalicious for my taste and a spicy Aztec Chocolate. All scoops come with an extra wee *Lenny scoop of a second flavor of your choosing. Their sammiches are toasty goodness and quite hearty. Consistently, these guys are all for great, extremely friendly and laid back service and wonderful, fresh ingredients. You also get a free pop or water bottle with your order. They made my day by giving me a couple of free samples of their delicious gelato "just because". Perfect light lunch for baseball watching. BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE I can't help writing this update. I'm just blown away. When I last went to Royal Grinders a month ago, they mixed up our order(3 sandwiches) and gave us fresh veggie instead of the roasted veggie. They genuinely apologized and wrote down my name promising complimentary sandwiches the next time I came. I went back today with my family and some friends after a month and as soon as I walked into the door, the lady who made the sandwiches last time and her boss recognized me and also seemed to somehow remember my name. They apologized again for the mix-up the last time and told us how they were very glad to see us back. They then gave us all the sandwiches on the house. What amazed me is that they remembered us and made it a point to keep their promise without me having to ask or remind them. Truly hats off to this level of dedication to the customer. I may have died and gone to heaven. Tasty hot, toasted sandwiches on one side and delicious, creative gelato on the other. I did not eat both at the same time, although I was seriously tempted. I first turned my full attention on the toasted italian sandwich. They are made to order which takes a bit of time, but it is worth the wait! It was a nice day so we didn't mind basking in the sunny outdoor seating behind the Lenny statue. Once I wolfed down my sandwich, I was ready to take on the gelato. They have at any given time at least 24 different flavors of gelato. One more tempting than the next. I tasted the strawberry jalapeno which was surprisingly tasty though spicy and then I tasted the spicy azteca chocolate which had quite a kick. Both yummy, but not together. I settled on the rose with a lenny scoop of the chocolate rasberry. Though next time, I'm definitely having a whole scoop of the rice pudding. I could have spent all afternoon tasting gelato, but I like to leave a little a something for my next visit. There was an interesting pumpkin gelato that I also want to try. The sandwich itself was quite delicious. I have a sandwich habit, you see, and I really... REALLY love sandwiches. I don't know what it is about them, but I love them. Everything about sandwiches. They are so good. Especially warm. My Grinder was baked and it was excellent. Of course, I got gelato again, but since they were out of plain chocolate, I changed it up. I got crazy. I got chocolate-flake, strawberry cream with a "lenny" scoop of Rose. I didn't love the rose. I was visiting Seattle with my friend from LA a couple of weeks back. we actually weren't planning on coming here because it's a bit far and out of the way from Downtown or the UW area... but we had a few hours to spare on our last day, so we decided to get lunch there. so glad we came. getting there - the bus stops either right at Fremont troll or the stop after will put you in the heart of the area, which is filled with cute shops and restaurants like a book store, Aesop, or Royal Grinders to name a few the surrounding place - Fremont is pretty laid back and quiet. it's somewhat busy but it just reminds me of a NW Laguna Beach. like I said, the shops in the area are cute and it's a cool place to walk around. also walking distance from the Fremont troll. wish we had more time to explore before our departure flight. there was a coffee shop there we also wanted to check out staff - as soon as we get to the register the guys behind the desk are so cool and nice. always seemed willing to help us decide and know the details of their menu. they act like a brotherhood brought together by their love or passion for sandwiches and beer and I was feeling it, man. the place - really tight inside, but if it's a nice day out, you're in luck! and it's so refreshing to eat on their outdoor patio. there's maybe 4-5 tables outside the food - we tried the Royal Grinder and the pastrami. YO THE BREAD IS TO DIE FOR. it's soft and has a crispy casing. it has specks of herbs and onions baked inside. it holds its own and doesn't get soggy because of the meat juices or sauces. the meat is so tender. holy moly. in the end, I liked the pastrami better bc it had more flavor to it (I like strong flavors like Indian food and lamb). go for the Royal Grinder if you want a solid, simple sandwich. top it off with a dead guy ale and some chipotle Mayo on the side - drool. read more

Best gelato in Seattle. Royal Grinders is located behind the largest Vladmir Lenin statue in North America. It's also located in the heart of Fremont, a cute neighborhood in Seattle! I love that they give you the "Lenny scoop" so you can try a new flavor each time. The "Lenny scoop" is a scoop that is smaller than a normal scoop, but larger than a sample amount, and they give it to you no matter how many scoops of gelato you purchase! :) read more

I admit it! I am a gelato snob!!! It's somewhat healthier than ice cream- wink wink! I love trying different flavors and then deciding what do I want for my scoop and a lenny scoop( free cherry size scoop). I have been here a few times for dessert! YUM! The gelato maker does ask us for opinions on new flavors. I love being involved in the creative process! I haven't had the sandwiches but they sure do smell yummy! Other than the fact that it's a pain in my ass to get to Royal Grinders (parking in Fremont is and will always be a pain in the butt) I like this joint. I will always stop here when I'm already parked, but I'm not making any special trips here as I can get a similar sandwich with less stress in other locations around the city. That said, RGs offers awesome bread with a great sauce. The service is fantastically friendly, in a low-key, laid back operation. There's not a lot of room in there, and you can see how it would cause waits. It's pretty divey, but they have really stripped the operation down to the basics and focused on what is important; the sandwiches. I love that every sandwich comes with a drink. read more
