The staff are super friendly and also spoke to local workers in Spanish . They seem to know allot of people in the area and this intimate friendly place had great in door bank seating that adds to this charm. I have a full menu for a coffee places and the cherry danish I orders was crispy and fresh which they heated . I orders a vanilla latte and it was delicious and smooth . This review has been long overdue. Never in my life have I encountered a consistently horrendous eatery, cafe, etc. I have been here at least 15 times and each time was comparable to Groundhog Day. My gripe with this coffee shop is related to service and morals of the employees behind the counter. The food and drinks are okay, it's how it would turn out when the average person makes it at home themselves - mediocre. But it is the employees who are the problem. The service is very slow by choice (it is a personality issue) - they are barely packed yet they love to take their sweet time. Not only that, they will botch your order somehow. Down to the type of milk, hot vs. iced, your sandwich, etc. After I tell them my order, usually they'd then repeat the order back to me and the order noted is correct. Then when the order came out, there would always be a discrepancy. Sometime the wrong item completely. When this happened to me, I'd always accept it as is and not make a fuss as the wait by then had already been close to 15 - 30 minutes (depending on what I ordered). And, things happen, which is understandable. One drink should not take longer than 10 minutes, one vegetarian sandwich or bagel should not take more than 10 minutes as well, I never get them toasted. Slowness is a common occurrence as noted by other reviewers too. Another feedback that is more of the problematic behavior (unless you fit the description): if you are a white male, you will receive stellar service. This is a consistent behavior I have witnessed myself directly. There are several other reviews in here that imply the same experience. I no longer patronize here and would rather crawl on my knees, parched at another coffee shop as there are several nearby where staff members are courteous and treat everyone kindly. Cute and cozy cafe with lots of seating inside and free WiFi. I really liked the Café Borgia (coffee, chocolate & orange zest) - so delicious! I recommend it if you like mocha. We previously overlooked this place because of A.K. meats next door as well as another coffee place down the block. I have been here several times to do some work and the vibes are always so amazing! I'm always greeted whenever I walk in and they know what I want whenever I come in: hot water (sometimes Thai Iced Tea) and a smoked salmon salad! The shop feels so cozy with plenty of space to sit. Needed a coffee for my drive back to Sac and wanted something local. Found Royal Ground just down the block from where we had eaten lunch. The 2 ladies working there were hard at work but greeted us soon as we walked in to their cute little cafe. I scanned the Specialties board menu and ordered an iced "Saigon Coffee." They made it quick. Pretty cheap ($5.50) for a large sized drink (only came in this size). It was smooth, sweet and strong, but not too much, and had a good ratio of ice to liquid, even though I forgot to ask for less ice. It was delicious. I would say I'm a "regular" so I may be biased lol. These are the sweetest ladies! They know my name, coffee and food order by now. My faves are the lox special and avocado BLT. The drink was not very sweet if you like your coffee that way but if not they do have a station that has sugar, honey, etc. which is very nice! A cute, cozy spot for a coffee and breakfast. They have incredible bagel sandwiches! We were in town for a few days and my husband came here every day for their veggie sandwich on a bagel. Everything was so fresh. Their menu is very well priced for SF. Their service was timely and they made the food in front of you. I loved their mixed berry smoothie as well. It was a filling size with excellent flavor. There are great places to sit throughout the small space. In the back there are quieter tables if you are looking to work or have a meeting, a few small outdoor tables, and the main seating space has a huge beautiful mural that makes you feel like you're in Europe. The staff is extremely friendly, they seem to know their usual customers. They clearly have a lot of frequent customers. I can see why. I've actually never been to this particular coffee shop before and my boyfriend got a sandwich from next-door at a K meats! We always get sandwiches there and I recently found out I'm allergic to gluten! Lol all I wanted on this cold foggy day was a hot cup of coffee- And look what was right next-door!! I was welcomed in as I saw a beautiful mural on the left-hand side of the coffee shop and overwhelmed by the amazing aroma of freshly ground coffee! There were three ladies/barista's working and the main lady with glasses said I could ask her any questions about anything and She would be with me after she finished grinding some coffee for the customer in front of me. Their menu is somewhat in French, I had no idea the French had an orange mocha latte! They have a great menu board but I had to ask them what everything meant. Lol I felt obnoxious but I never took French in HS. hee The lady with glasses giggled and smiled as she helped me. I ended up just getting a double latte with almond milk and it was very strong tasting of espresso but freshly made! My boyfriend noticed they had breakfast sandwiches and with all my stupid food allergies, I never ask if anybody has vegetarian/vegan options with gluten-free breads, but to my surprise they had a gluten-free bread and a vegan sandwich! Hee I felt a little cold and just wanted to warm up with the latte so I said next time we go to the beach with our puppies I will definitely get a latte here and a gluten-free vegan sandwich as he gets a sandwich next-door. Then he told me that he really liked their breakfast sandwiches and all their toppings so he'll probably just eat something here as well! Lol we will definitely be back in a couple weeks!! There's so many great dog parks and beaches in San Francisco! The only thing I would say is parking is a little tight. I went inside on a whim while walking by and I'm so glad I did! Right away I loved it. It had a warm, almost bohemian feel to it, in all the best of ways. I can't think of many places that have a friendlier person taking your order than the wonderful woman at Royal Ground Coffee. This place has a great vibe and the food to back it up! I had the turkey sandwich. It was real turkey, not the processed kind. Loved it. I didn't get anything else, but I'm sure everything is awesome. Lots of people were ordering coffee drinks who appeared to be regulars. There were plenty of menu choices for breakfast bagel sandwiches, regular sandwiches, coffee, tea, and a nice assortment of other drinks. I don't live in San Francisco but visit several times a year. VEGAN review The bf and I stopped by for a quick bite and were pleased at the offerings of this little cafe. They had a nice range of the basic coffee items and non-dairy milk alternatives (soy, coconut, and almond milks) as well as some teas and Italian sodas. For vegan food, I think only the bagel with pbj and possibly the veggie special (with modifications). I LOVE pbj so I was pleased. The women at the counter were very friendly as well. This is such a cute neighborhood coffee shop! We stopped by here before going up to an early morning hike in Marin as it's on the way and one of the very few coffee shop open that early. But really glad we stopped by here! The coffee is strong - we got a Redeye (coffee with a shot of espresso) and a Vietnamese iced coffee. Both were solid. I really enjoy the iced Vietnamese coffee, so sweet and creamy. We also picked up a couple of breakfast sandwiches on everything bagel, and they were good too and prepared hot and fresh. As we were heading out, regulars were steaming in and it's so great to see the staff knows them by name! I would NOT attend this place if you are a BIPOC because the workers there are extremely rude, condescending and discriminatory. I went there two times, and the first time a woman named Rose was rude since all that was purchased was a cheese croissant and she was bothered about being asked to get the one in front on the display case. The second time was today and a barista was asked for a coffee to go and asked for a latte to have at the place. She made the coffee to go and made the cafe latte to go as well. Needlessly to say, the barista became defensive and upset when asked to please remake the latte because the foam would get mixed in if she just poured it into a cup. She defended herself and stated she was told both coffee were to go. I let her know it was an easy mistake and to please remake it to have in house. Instead of making the latte as the patron requested, she proceeded to just put it in a ceramic cup and pass it off as a newly made cafe latte. When I (the patron) informed her that I noticed what she did and that was not what was requested; she began to speak in Asian Language( Vietnamese or Thai, not exactly sure) and stormed off speaking in her native language to the other side of the professional coffee machines. The other woman who understood the language did not apologize, but rather dismissed what was what she had just heard and witnessed. I let her know that they were both lacking in customer service. At this point, the commotion led to another patron (who seemed to be a regular) approach and find out what was going on. It was an older white gentleman who was 6'2 and approximately 250 lbs approached me aggressively and began to verbally insult me. He physically blocked my way and was inches away from me. The workers allowed this behavior to go without consequences. Please note: I am a Latina who is 5'0 and 150. I'm not tiny but definitely was afraid this man would attack me. I could not go around him. He had completely blocked my way. It's a very small place. When I informed him to please excuse himself, as he did not know what had transpired; he refused to leave and stated that he was "Super Man" when I asked him who he was. At that point, I told him he was harassing me and that if he continued I would call the police for my safety. Then only way the massive white man left, was when his wife led him back to their table. At this point, the woman who appeared to be the one who was in charge for the shift, became more emboldened and basically decided I was at fault, since this white man took their side; when he had no idea what had happened. The barista who initially made the mistake and had stormed off, decided at that point it would be the perfect time to shout at me again and this time was emboldened to also shout: PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE!! I asked her if this was her establishment? And she was taken aback by the question. I then asked the other Asian woman who seemed to be in charge of the shift if she was the owner since I was told that I was not welcome. I asked to please get the information of the owner so that I could speak to him directly because of the treatment I had received. I requested a refund. She said I would not get one!! She shouted at me and told me to get out. One very important detail in this story is that I was there with my mother and step father who are both Latino seniors; and I am a Latina woman. We were the only Latino people there. I saw only white people and I have noticed the difference in treatment. If you are a white person, if I as a betting woman I would say, you would receive stellar colonial service. For those who do not fit that description, please go to Starbuck's, Pete's or a place where you know you will NOT be discriminated against and where your safety will be put in jeopardy over a cafe late made by an extremely rude, disrespectful and immature barista. read more
