This restaurant used to be East Lake.. they remodeled and now there is new ownership-- and now they're Royal Palace. This restaurant has a lot of potential.. good location, huge space, and especially since they're one of the few dine in options for dim sum. However, this place is just too inconsistent. My first time dining in, when it first reopened to the public- the food and service was fantastic! The second time, the food was lukewarm and they ran out of a couple of items I wanted. The third time (even tho my husband was reluctant to go back... but I was craving dim sum and as said earlier, it's one of the few options around the area) -- the food was surprisingly good but the service was questionable. They installed a huge projector and sound system - so they were playing Chinese drama on the screen. There was only one other table besides us since we went right when they opened. Our server spent most of her time watching tv then pay any attention to us.. we had to get our own to go box and never had water refilled. Again, they have a lot of potential.. Traveling the country in search of dim sum restaurants, I was excited to find a semi-new place in my own backyard. Having been here before when it was known as East Lake Chinese Restaurant, this was one of my favorite places to get dim sum. Luckily it is still one of the best places to get dim sum. I came here on a weekday and was surprised to find them pushing carts, which is something most dim sum restaurants stopped doing since the pandemic. All the food was still hot and fresh and the variety was excellent. We ordered a few dishes off the main menu as well, which tasted just as good as before. Overall a new name but still a great place to get quality cantonese cuisine, and still one of my favorite places to get dim sum in the country. read more

Revisited Royal Palace, which had undergone a change of ownership since the first time we dined here. We enjoyed a wide range of dim sum selections, including such items as: mara cake (which reminded the co-diner of breaded mozzarella cheese) - good, but would have benefited from the addition of a sauce. We also had a shrimp ball (very good), curried cuttlefish, which another person at the table had for the first time and enjoyed. Another item was baozi stuffed with honey BBQ pork ((sweet and tasty). We also had a few larger items, including a beef dish with cumin, cashew chicken, soup with beef and tofu and egg drop, and an eggplant dish. All the items were served well, although we had to request water glasses and utensils. Still, the experience was a unique one, which gave us the opportunity to try a wide variety of tastes from different regions of China. Wow wow wow wow wow loveeee this place! This is my second time back after being invited here for an Elite event. It's been a few months since the event and so we wanted to give it a try again. The food is incredible!! Really authentic Chinese dishes and dim sum. Every dish with its own unique flavor and so many options for spicy food, if you like that! The service was great too, the food came out so fast and the servers were very attentive. Only reason I'm not giving this place a 5 is because I just can't look past the lack of cleanliness. The place was quite messy and dirty, it didn't look like it had been cleaned all day. But they were in the process of renovating the bathroom and it looked much better than when I had come before. I hope they can clean up the place a bit more and the next time I come I will be happy to update my review to a 5/5. read more

They really should give us the option to put no stars. Me and my boyfriend went for valentines day. We had went an hour before closing hours and I understand if the kitchen is closed for the night or they aren't taking anymore tables. We went inside and I had specifically asked if they are still taking tables and the guy with like a short hair (looks like a bob cut or whatever it is) says yes. So he seats us down and asks us for anything we would like to drink. Comes back with our waters and we never saw him after that. We ended up leaving after 15 mins of waiting because the worker decided to make it look like he was too busy to come back to our table but wait for the best part. While we were leaving towards the door, he says "have a good day". Literally at this point why even say that if you barely gave bare minimum of service towards us but has the nerve to say have a good day. That ticked my boyfriend off so bad. My question is why seat us and not give customer service afterwards, after the fact I asked if they were still taking tables? Now me and my man, we both work in the restaurant industry so therefore it wasn't hard to read all workers body language at all. You won't find us going back to dine at this location. read more

We got sat and waited to give this place a shot but after 15 minutes we ended up walking out we were not offered any water or a drink or greeted by a server either. Can't decide a 3 stars or 4 stars. We went there at dinner time for specifically for dim sum but were disappointed that they only had very limited options at that hours. Plus they don't taste that great. I am not sure if I like their dim sum more or the frozen ones from asian grocery stores more. This should explain what you can expect of the overall quality. We like the other menu items though (Broccoli beef, egg drop soup) etc. Service is ok. Seems like there is only one waitress serving all customers but she is quite efficient. read more

I understand it's holiday but if your automatically adding tip to check then service need to be better. But I won't give them 2nd chance. Why did I select this Chinese restaurant to celebrate my birthday? It used to be East Lake Chinese before it shut down for over a year and changed management. It is authentic Chinese food. Our experience was horrible. We had to ask for tea, which is unusual in a Chinese restaurant; you are normally asked. Then, we were given styrofoam cups when all the other tables were given porcelain cups. Unfortunately our party of six wasn't allowed to order off the menu given to other tables, even when we asked nicely. We were given two dirty 8 x 11 typed sheets with food stains. None of the food on these sheets were completely vegetarian, even though their website advertises vegetarian food. All vegetarian items contained shrimp or pork. The website advertised dim sum, but we did not see the carts going around, nor were we given a dim sum menu. Our food was not brought out together. The Mongolian beef was brought out first while the rest of us waited for our entrees. My husband used the men's bathroom and he said it was filthy. He said the women's bathroom door was open and he said it looked filthy with paper towel debris all over. When the cake we brought was served, they gave us a commercial chef's knife that was at least 16 inches long. They gave us paper plates and plastic forks. Other guests were giving us the stink eye during our dining experience. Obviously, we were not welcome. Obviously, we won't be back. read more

This is one of the worst places I've eaten in the Troy area! The General Chicken tasted like frozen batter and then fried in grease... cold vegetables on the side. So much MSG it was sickening! My friend and I met up for some authentic Chinese food to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Two women meeting up for a nice dinner, right? No. Clearly, we were not welcome. We were not greeted or acknowledged for ten embarrassingly tense minutes, then waited five more to be put at a table, where we lingered for an additional five with no water, no menus, not even a smile. Formerly East Lake Chinese Restaurant right on the Long Lake and Rochester Plaza. New owners maybe? Certainly, when the old name changed so did the taste and quality, unfortunately. I ordered the egg rolls, Shui mai, and sesame seed balls, along with other items. The egg rolls got smaller, the roll wrapper took most of the filling. It tasted like I was eating fried egg roll wrapper. The Shui Mai was about the same. The sesame balls were about 25% smaller. She server didn't bring it along with the rest of the plates and I had to ask about it. By the time it got to the table it had cooled. Clearly it sat on the counter for over 10 mins. Not happy with that! My husband ordered rice, which we had to ask the server about it. We asked her to cancel it since we've eaten most of our food. Also ordered the chive pan cake and it had more filling than the chives. Not how it used to taste before. Chicken was ok and tender. The meat balls were smaller about 1/2 the size now. He ordered the beef balls with veggies (no veggies inside) . Overall, it's a 3 for us. Disappointed with 3 of whar we ordered. Given their prices and food quality, I's rather go somewhere else. read more
