I'm a fan of Sichuan cooking, having spent many a hot, sweaty mealtime hanging out at the Sichuanese on Coit Rd and Little Sichuan on Legacy in Plano. When I heard of Royal Sichuan's opening, it went on my list of places to try. My man and I finally made our way across town to dine there for a late lunch. At 2pm on a Saturday the place still seemed busy, all booths were occupied, as we were led to our table. The dining room was narrow, but not cramped, appointed in soothing shades of sage and tan, decorated with calm landscapes and warm woodwork. The place was comfortable and inviting, and I saw myself coming back here for this reason alone. Our hostesses (it seemed we were beset by two or three at them at once) took our order and we were left pondering the surprises that lay in store for us. As a starter we tried Chung's dumplings, which came out hot and steaming along with the lamb with cumin we ordered. As we dug into the dumplings, the eggplant in garlic sauce arrived, followed by the Chongqing chicken and steamed rice. Like most authentic places, pacing of the different courses is non-existent; for this visit, we were starved and weren't in the mood to wait for the next course. The dumplings were slippery yet tasty, though I expected more heat and sweetness from the chili oil they swam in. Lamb and cumin had the typical flavor I've come to expect of this dish, except Royal Sichuan's version was heavily garnished with cilantro--which tamed the strong flavors. The eggplant provided a perfect counterpoint to the lamb, neutral and soothing to the palate. Being both garlic fans, my companion and I heartily approved of this dish. The chicken dish was our adventurous gamble; a fiery golden mound of battered chicken arrived at our table, smothered in red chilis and green onions. The chicken had a dry salty-peppery seasoning which supplied a different texture from our previous dishes. I also enjoyed the red chilis which lent a papery texture to the dish; though my man abstained from it for the very same reason. Of course it took only one bite of the tiny sichuan peppers (huajiao?) garnishing this dish to induce a mouth-tingling explosion that is hard to erase. But the Chongqing chicken was addicting, so we carefully picked out the pepper flowers as we snarfed down the rest of the dish. We skipped soft drinks and went with water this round; luckily our servers were extremely attentive and refilled our glasses. The damage came to nearly $40 total, and for that price, the experience at Royal Sichuan was well worth it. We'll visit again to sample more of their menu. read more

Came here with a friend who don't eat authentic Asian food often. I came here mainly to try the orange beef. I like to try other places to see which place is the best, taste-wise and price-wise. The orange beef was meh. The ones that I'm in love with is crispy. This place's is not crispy at all. It was a regular breaded beef coated with not so great sauce. We ordered also ordered twice cooked pork. I suggested it to my friend, cause she wanted authentic and it's somewhat the popular dish here. when the dish came, I was like wut? I was thinking about something else, but idk the name. At first, it was alright, but the more I ate, the more I like it. What I didn't like is that there was not much meat in the pile of onions. also, there was more fat than meat. I don't know if I'll order the twice cooked pork again. I love Royal Sichuan! Discovered this place through Yelp a couple months ago and I've been back five times. Spicy food, bowls of rice and BYOB cant be beat! I've tried multiple meat and tofu dishes which are all delicious, but what gets my mouth watering is the fish. We've had the fish in oil hot pot(which is huge and would feed 3 people easily) and the deep fried fish hot pot. I would recommend both of these, they are both spicy and awesome! It just depends if you want soft, flaky fish that's cooked straight in the oil, or the fried fish is crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, with a sweeter flavor. I can wait to take more friends here! Its fun to have everyone pick a dish and then its served family style so you get to try lots of different things. Just have to warn people not to bite straight into a Sichuan peppercorn if you don't want your entire mouth numbed. And I think they have an off-putting flavor when directly chewed. Super authentic, super tasty, and super well-priced. The waistaff doesn't speak much English but it'll be enough to get the point through. I ordered a sizzling dish of spicy pig intestines with their self proclaimed "hell-sauce" which was pretty good if your down with pig intestines. It just tastes like squid, just close your eyes and imagine that's what it is because the sauce is so tasty. Plus it's cool because the dish comes with aflame underneath it to heat up the dish as you're eating it. For more conservative eaters, the ma-po tofu is a winner. It's spicy pork (non-intestine) with tofu. Only thing I didn't like is their water. Hey, I'm not picky ok!--I just don't like to drink tap water. (Updated) New Location, same crappy service. This place used to be OK....but now mehhh. Tried something different today... Mango Chicken and a starter of Eggplant. Kid had the chicken lomein. She always says this place has the best. Today, not the best. She said it tastes American. My mango chicken has literally no flavor, and the chicken tastes like it's been in a warmer on a buffet for hours......like at the mall, or Panda Express. One bright spot in service was their token ABC. She actually engaged when I went up to look at the cold dishes, and asked me if she could help me with something. Huge plus for this place..... she probably won't last. Back to a remaining portion of my original review.... My fiancé loves their spicy soup (intestine noodles). If you like Hot spicy and Authentic Sichuan/Szechuan food then this is the place. Its hard finding authentic asian food in metro areas due to the fusions and wannabe Chefs who are always diluting and messing up a good meal but you can't go wrong with this place. I stopped by here yesterday with a group and was well worth the visit. It's located in the Chinatown of Richardson area on Greenville ave. The place was partially full with majority asian patrons which is always a good sign. We were seated in one of the tables that caters to family style dining with a swivel top table that rotates. For our entrees we were very diverse starting with the Steamed Fish topped with Chili pepper in a broth followed by a Beef and Fish Stew in a Soft Tofu Pot and then we mixed it up with Sliced Lamb with Chili Pepper then followed by Chongchinq Chicken which is a deep fried Chicken with roasted chili peppers and for the vegetarian in us we had the Eggplan in Garlic Sauce. By the Time all the meals were served on the table there was barely any room left so we had to start dissecting the bowls. The Food was Temperature hot and spicy hot at the same time and the portions were very generous with the server giving us refills of scoops of rice to eat the food with . The sichuan style of cooking involves a lot of cooking with hot peppers for spice and flavor and this captured all of the flavor one could expect in a Sichuan dish. The type of fish used in the cooking was a white fish which the server really couldn't translate to me but it wasn't the best flavored fish otherwise the would easily have gotten a five star. Towards the end we also ordered an entree of the Chinese Celery which was delicious . Overall the food did have lots of spice and oil in it but the taste was very refreshing and worth another adventure again. read more

Although I don't think they serve authentic Sichuan dishes, I have to admit their lunch specials are quite good at the price point they are charging which includes unlimited soup, rice, and pickled cabbage. The lunch special contains quite a few choices and comes out super fast piping hot minutes after you place your order. Ive tried the pork belly dish and the shredded pork dish, both are savory without being overly salty, not overly oily also, goes perfect with white rice and the complimentary soup. Half the workers don't speak english, and if you speak chinese to them, they still give you an attitude. What most good chinese chefs don't understand it that it's not enough to deliver authentic taste. In america, you need GOOD service as well... I am pretty willing to put up with neglected service if they give you a good tasting meal. But what earned this place 2 stars is the fact that they have crappy food with crappy service... a deadly combination with so many authentic chinese restaurants within walking distance. The Mapao tofu sucked, just greasy with no real taste. The house special spicy ribs is literally a 10 dollar dish for 5 fried piece of short ribs in a bed of red peppers. The kung pao chicken is authentic, but it wasn't enough of a saving grace to make me want to come back. They do have cold dishes on the side which was pretty good, but with SO MANY other authentic Chinese restaurants doing that now days, no one is going to drive down to richardson for crappy Sichuanese food when the restaurants on legacy and 75 are amazing... read more

I've been coming here for about 4 years now. Food is consistently delicious every single time. If you order fried rice, you're doing it wrong. The wait... What wait?? Super fast cooks with their ninja woks pumping out hot food at the speed of light! My favorite is the Mala- Dohua- Yupian. Is that pinyin even right? Its spicy sliced fish with tofu. The sauce is glorious. You want to drizzle it all over your rice then bathe in it. For veggies get the stir fried string beans and eggplant. Keep in mind that traditional Sichuan food is oily! For example, if you order a Sichuan hot pot it will come in a pot of oil. You're NOT supposed to eat the oil. They're not trying to purposely give you a heart attack, I promise :) I think they add some kind of drugs in their food because it's really that addicting. Plus, this place is BYOB! If you want Sichuan family-style Chinese food, this is the right place for you. The food is greasy and spiced up, which may not sound that appealing, but that's Sichuan cuisine for you. Eat it every day, and you'll die of an early heart attack. Eat it once in a while, and you'll be dying for an excuse to visit again. All of the dishes were good stuff, but I'd specially recommend Feitungyu (). It's fish dish based off Feitung restaurant-chain in China, and it's worth every penny. I've been feening sichuan food like a vietnamese feens for gambling. I decided it was finally time to go ahead and satisfy my cravings. My brother had recommended this place for sichuan food so the family decided to go there. Right when we got there, there was a line for seating. Normally, i would just walk out, but i saw a waitress walk by with a tray of food. The food looked amazing so we decided to stay. Once we finally got seated, we looked over the menu. All the dishes sounds similar. It's pretty much different types of meat cooked in different sichuan ways. We ordered the Chongjing or something like that Fried chicken, the sliced pork belly with chili-garlic sauce, The fish fiery hot pot, and the chinese spinach greens. EVERYTHING TASTED AMAZING. The dishes come out fiery red and seems like it would be blazing spicy, but none of the dishes were super spicy at all. Sichuan cuisine focuses on the sichuan peppercorns that actually have a numbing effect on your mouth. It allows you eat more of the spicy food. The fried chicken came with chicken pieces that were fried and sprinkled with some sweet-salty seasoning thats amazing. It's then sauteed with dried chilis which adds a nice kick. The fiery hot pot had filets of white fish that seemed like it was braised in a red oily broth. The pork belly was thinly sliced pork belly on a bed of bean sprouts covered in chili-garlic sauce. They had ALOT of garlic in it which was nice if you like garlic. The spinach greens were cooked well and seasoned with garlic and salt. The whole meal was great. My parents enjoyed the food greatly and thats pretty amazing since they are traditional korean parents. Korean parents are really picky on what they eat, but my parents loved it. If you like spice food and Asian food alike, then you are in for a treat at Royal Sichuan. We came in on Christmas looking for some hot food to make our blood bubble, and we left thoroughly satisfied... though my brother made a bee-line for the restroom upon arriving home--he has the weak stomach of the family. You peruse through the menu and find that everything sounds typical of a Chinese menu: fried chicken, beef and broccoli, and green beans cooked with pork. Anything NOT typical of the take-out joint? Ask for some recommendations, or even take some of mine to heart when you do make your way over to Chinatown. The "eggplant in garlic sauce" was a mushy mixture of oil, spice, and eggplant stir-fried so that the purple pieces of produce could absorb all of the savory flavor. This dish is refreshing, but heavy at the same time. Oily, rich, but it is still eggplant... Tea-smoked duck was as close to ham as you can get... without being ham. The only difference was the texture. Instead of being sort of moist and somewhat chewy like country ham, the fowl boasted a crisp and tender texture on every piece. And the fat cap provided a little chewy addition. The spicy fried chicken was essentially popcorn chicken. With an abundance of those classic Sichuanese peppers. Nothing more. If you are a muncher or enjoy a mound of fried things, this is your dish. Do not expect anything special. The Ma-Po tofu was on par with many of the other coagulated soy milk dishes cooked in Chinese sauce with pork that I have had in my 22 year old career as a Chinese food eater. These cubes of tofu sit inside an oily concoction of pork, peppers, and lots of spices. How can it get any better? The most surprising thing here is the pricing. Let us analyze. The ~50 pieces of popcorn chicken could run you $15-20 elsewhere, but this authentic eatery charges you right around $9. The tea-smoked duck is quite the delicacy, yet they are charging only $13 for a quarter to a half of this fowl jerky. Great way to try some ethnic stuff on the cheap. Royal Sichuan is one of the only joints in the DFW offering spicy grub that is not only authentic, but very tasty as well. The service is not bad, to boot. I've been in the spicy food mood all month long. My dining partner and I got the long beans, spicy shredded beef and squid hot pot. The beans were stir fried with bits of garlic and very little oil. Very tasty. Beef was loaded with dried chile peppers, sichuan peppercorns and julienne strips of veggies. The sichuan peppercorns are unlike anything you've tasted, one bite and you'll feel the heat! My favorite was the hot pot, which had chunks of tender squid deep fried and placed into an iron pot with chiles and spring onions. It was sizzling hot. We had no leftovers on that dish, in fact I wish they had added a bit more. We got there around 11:30am on Sunday, so there were plenty of seats available. However, the crowds started streaming in not long after we were seated and a line had formed by the time we left. Service was okay, had to flag down a server for refills and the check. read more

I've been to this restaurant twice. The first time was ok except that were was a rubber band in our greens. The waitress apologized many times and brought us some more. Someone just needed to slow down in the kitchen. The rest of the food that day was very good. The second time I went there was last night. The food was good. I especially liked the shredded fish with pine nuts (not really shredded, more like chunks) and the eggplant with shrimp. The crab and something soup (can't really remember the name, it's the first one on the list of soup) had no flavour at all. Next time we go, i want to try the whole fish in the dou bang jiang sauce. The service is not bad. The only thing that kind of bothers me is that they always bring me a fork and say stuff like "wow, you like chinese food?" or "many americans like this or that (pointing to americanized chinese food on the menu)." I try not to be too offended though because i know they are just trying to be nice but i go there with my Taiwanese husband who helps me figure out the menu just fine and i prefer the chopsticks!! Maybe the third time i go someone might remember that i'm not new to (real) Chinese food. Another good thing though is that we came in pretty late last night and were the last ones to leave, but they didn't rush us. They are a little expensive in my opinion. This place has really good Sichuan style foods! My favorite thing here is the spicy fish in fiery sauce. They are also well known for their spicy fish in boiling oil sauce that comes in this big bowl. The cold plates where you choose 3 items up at the front are really good too! The service is alright..typical Asian service. Most of them don't speak English very well or at all so you might have to point at the menu what you want. I come here regularly for the spicy fish! This used to be a destination. Having never been to Sichuan but having sampled it's cuisine around the US I considered Royal to be an excellent interpretation of the genre. Towards the end of 2019 and spring of 2020, I noticed that my favorite dishes weren't prepared as they previously had been, that's to say the food was inferior. Mid August 2020 I headed to Chinatown with Sichuan on my mind ready to try the neighboring Sichuan King and see if it was better, perhaps Royal's chef had defected and was now manning the woks at King. ? Much to my dismay I discovered the opposite had happened. Sichuan King had moved and the new address was ...Royal Sichuan's spot. The RS sign is still there but new signage states that it is now indeed Sichuan King:( has RS moves or just couldn't weather the pandemic. Whatever the case, Royal Sichuan is no longer in Richmond's Chinatown. A moment of silence please. read more

This is a szechuan restaurant so the spiciness is no joke. I've tried many items from the menu, and they range from average to pretty good. Although szechuan food is known for it's spiciness, I feel like this place doesn't depend on the spicy factor to provide flavoring for their dishes. However, my last visit here was a different story. I think it if weren't for my latest visit, I would give this place 4 stars, but now I'll have to go with 3. I usually order the sliced beef with fiery sauce when I come here. This dish is generally well-seasoned and spicy in a good way (yes, there's a good way and a bad way). But this last time it was just spicy. There was no other flavoring to it - the dish was bland, and oily. The only thing I got out of it was a runny nose (my signature reaction to spicy food). But since this only happened once - I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to a bad day by the chef. Service here is pretty lacking. I don't think I've ever had a good experience with the wait staff. I've had okay service at best. I generally get the impression that they want us to hurry up, finish our food, and get outta there... even when the restaurant is empty. A Cricket was making some sound near my booth but could not find where until I finished eating I only ordered authentic (I guess?) sichuan dishes and it was all okay. This was our 4th Sichuan restaurant this month and was so much better by far. Everything was hot, flavorful, plentiful and fresh tasting. The service was somewhat lacking in that we didn't start off with enough settings and when asking for more was forgotten about. One staff member either didn't hear us or ignored us when asking for bowls and plates to share our dishes family style. We eventually learned to ask another waitress if there was anything we needed. this place has been my go to for sichuanese food since it opened. I absolutely love their fish and tofu in chili oil dish, and their beef dishes aren't bad too. the fried chicken chili nuggets aren't exactly my favorite (i still think Hong Yun Cafe on parker and coit does it better) and the lamb in cumin is more fatty than my liking. However the prices are quite cheap as far as chinese food goes, and service is friendlier than you'll get at most chinese restaurants. don't confuse this place with sichuan king down the strip; this place is much yummier :) read more

As a chinese I do think Most of the authentic Chinese dishes are very good. One of my fav is a tofu dish in Chinese it is called Qian ye tofu. And I don't even like tofu in the first place so that one is a strong recommendation. Appetizers are all pretty good, as well as dumplings and noodle stuff. The one thing I have ordered and not as good is duck dish. Their service are pretty, really fast. But be aware that they don't take AE or discover! read more

Great first experience. The Sliced Fish with Fiery Sauce was amazing. Big hunks of fish swimming in a large bowl of oily, red peppery goodness. It also had some celery and other vegetables floating around. Not crazy spicy, but it definitely had a kick, and the rice was a necessary dampener for the excess oil and hot peppers. The Eggplant with Garlic Sauce was incredible too. The eggplant was so tender it melted in my mouth, and the sauce was delicious. These two dishes were enough to stuff two grown men (with leftovers too!). As a whitey, it's always good to be the minority in restaurants featuring ethnic cuisines. My parents order take-out from here at least once every couple of weeks. They say it's got the best tasting food around. We usually get all the spicy stuff. Spicy eggplant, chicken, pork. Tonight was my first night actually eating in the restaurant. And I was surprised at how nice it looks inside. It's small, but doesn't look like your typical Chinese restaurant. Came here on a week night and it was pretty busy. That's usually a good sign for a restaurant I guess. We got 3 dishes and white rice. The beef noodle soup in clear broth, fish fillets in black bean sauce, and spicy fried chicken. The beef noodle soup broth had good flavor and my kids were willing to eat it so that's good. But I tasted the beef and it almost had no seasoning at all. It was tender but very bland. The Spicy Fried Chicken wasn't that good. It surprisingly tasted like buffalo wings which is weird for a Chinese place. But here's the part I didn't like. They took the chicken wing and cut it against the bone to little nugget-size pieces. This made each piece have tiny little bones you had to constantly pick out and be careful not to bite on. I'm the kind of person who doesn't like to work through a ton of bones to eat my meat. That's just me though. If you like working for your food, be my guest and try this dish! And finally my favorite dish, the fish fillet in black bean sauce. The fish was seasoned, tender, and moist. Nothing like a good Chinese restaurant to celebrate Christmas! We have this tradition in my group, always a success. Food is very, very good and I can highlight the Mongolian beef, the roasted duck (very flavorful), the eggplant, green beans, a stew with fish and shrimps with noodles. All of them well prepared and i recommend them all. We had about 4 tables for our group and I sat with people who prefers mild spicy food. Loved the vegetables, fresh and crunch in all dishes. Green beans were good too. I did not try the calamari and the sweet and sour chicken was little off... kind of watered down somehow and did not have enough peppers that usually comes with it. I am most used to eat this dish with pork, though. The food came very fast, as expected in a Chinese restaurant. They were packed but service with water, dishes and tea went very well. I've been to this place at least several times already but always with my family. Here is what I recommend to get a good taste of the pungent spicy Sichuanese flavor that gives you the tingly numby feeling in your mouth. The spicy talapia and tofu bathed in red chili sauce with fresh cilantro on top is my absolute favorite. The hot spicy soup is also an excellent choice if you have an acquired taste in sour stuff. The shredded pork with celery and the dumplings are also another one of my favorites. The place used to be pretty cramped during my first few times I went there, but now it looks like they've re-arranged it to make it feel more spread out. Service isn't really that bad compare to most other Chinese restaurants that serve authentic cuisine. They do try to be as attentative as possible. This place is kind of pricy for a Chinese restaurant but it is worth it for those who want to experience the Sichuanese flavor. It was about close to $80 for 7 dishes and soup. read more

I was excited to try the crisp tofu because when I visited my friend in Atlanta I got to try their salt and pepper tofu. I got really excited when I saw a yelper post a picture of the crisp tofu and it looked just like the salt and pepper tofu. What I didn't realize was the tofu pieces were much smaller than what I thought it would be. And it didn't quite taste the same as the salt and pepper tofu. But if I weren't comparing dishes, the flavor was pretty good. I also ordered the sweet and sour pork which was also pretty good. I did a take-out order so when I took it home, since both of them are fried foods it got a little soggy. But they had some sense and poked holes on top of the box to keep it from getting too soggy. Most of the people there spoke little to no English but it was easy to order from them and they were very nice too. I was standing waiting for a while until the lady motioned for me to sit down at a table which was really nice. I think I would recommend eating at the restaurant rather than take out because the food might be a little better when it's fresh and hot. But still the food is pretty good as leftovers. They seem to have authentic recipes and most of the customers that I saw were Chinese so that is always a good sign. read more

One among many Asian restaurants in this Richardson strip mall. Nondescript from the outside, interior nicely decorated with a Chinese theme (even with a vinyl strip curtain inside the front door). I can't speak to the difference or authenticity in Chinese/Szechuan cuisine but the menu looks pretty extensive, offering various single-plate dishes of chicken, duck, pork, tripe, beef, fish, shellfish, eel, frog and vegetarian. Had the duck with spicy noodles, which was shredded meat stir-fried with julienned vegetables on top of angel-hair noodles in a spicy red sauce. Each dish was served with a scooped bowl of white rice, and we added a couple of eggrolls as appetizers. The food was great and served family-style (good presentation, portions large enough for sharing, or two meals) and even though marked as "spicy" on the menu it had barely any heat at all. Service was courteous and fast, if a little unclear sometimes due to a language barrier. Encountered none of the problems listed in other reviews, the place was half-full on a weeknight and was good food and a great experience. read more

Wonderful authentic Sichuan food. Enjoy the Mini beef skewers, dong dong noodles, and fried chicken with chiles and peppercorns.

This is our favorite Sichuan spot in all of Dallas. We typically come here bi-weekly to get our mapo tofu, C-18 chicken, Dan Dan noodle and fried rice fix. We basically order the same 4 things every time lol. The best part of over-ordering for 2 is that we get to enjoy the left overs the next day. Food comes out lightning fast, piping hot and the servers are always great. :) read more
