This little place is just.... Sweet. The building looks as it did when it was built. The chicken pieces are on the small side but yummy. The service is by car-hops. How cool is that? Here's a point-by-point. Yes.... The building has not been touched for decades. Me? I love that uniqueness. It brings to mind being a kid getting a surprise "dinner" at the little drive in. I haven't been in a while so I am not sure if the staff is on roller skates or not. That would be great, wouldn't it? Like I said, the pieces of chicken were on the small side but.... I'll start by saying the drive in looks pretty cool and old fashion looking but the food was just disappointing. We got the the chicken sandwich since we thought the place was known the chicken. The sandwich was so burnt it was impossible to bite through. We also ordered the bulgogi fries and oddly enough that was the best part of the meal but there was barely any meat on it. The only saving grace was the fact that the ordering and service was quick. Overall, even though I love supporting old small businesses I could never bring myself to come back. 3 stars for the history. 1 star for the food. read more

I'm very sad to say after eating here most of my life the food has declined in size and quality. The giant Pall Bunyan Burger is a mere shadow of itself. It might as well be a Bug Mac without the center bun. But I'm most sad about the fries. They used to sell huge steak cut fries but now they are thin and sad and overly done. You now get a huge amount but quantity does not make up for quality. But the saddest of all was that Ypsilanti's most famous Peanut Butter Shake wasn't peanut-buttery enough. AND one more menu item disappointedly smaller. The shake I received was mostly white and had little peanut butter in it. At the bottom it was more vanilla than peanut butter. I remember times you needed a spoon to scrape the sides of the cup to get all of the peanut buttery goodness off and stir it back into the shake. The Chick Inn is an Ypsilanti institution and I will never give up on it. I just wish I could say the same for them. read more

I called ahead for a burger, sweet potato fries and a strawberry shake. Do yourself a favor and avoid the burger and fries here. The sweet potato fries were cold and a very small portion for $3.99. I moved up from down south so maybe my expectations are high for sweet potatoe fries. The burger was a 6/10, nothing special. It's only saving grace was some sort of big mac sauce. The strawberry shake was excellent. Cold, thick and with fresh fruit. Maybe the fried chicken or hot dogs are good here but the service and cold food left a bad first impression. I really wanted to love this place. It's 1 of 5 Drive-In eateries in Michigan. You pull up to a divey Restaurant on a corner with old Drive-In menu boards with toy cars attached to them above the speaker. A large neon sign on the building advertises curbside service. The menu wasn't huge but offered a decent variety of items from hamburgers, chicken tenders, cheesesteaks and hot dogs. They also serve fried chicken. They offer homemade shakes which seem to be a favorite amongst other Yelp reviewers but we did not try this time. Beverages they offered came in one size. We were not super hungry but we wanted to stop in while we have the chance so we decided on to Coney dogs and a large order of chili cheese fries with a pink lemonade for us to share. The food came out relatively quick within 10 minutes or so. The price was $10.10 so it wasn't horrible. The CarHop didn't seem to have anything that she could use for us to pay with a credit card so we paid in cash I have to check to see if they accept cards. But that could be a deterrent in the future should I return that I should have to have cash on me. Food: Then here's where all went downhill. The pink lemonade was great. The french fries themselves just plain fries were very delicious and I would order a family-size of the plain fries. I don't know if they were hand-cut but they seemed homemade and they were thick. But the cheese was a small slice of cheese and the chili was that horrible super thin and soupy sweet chili. I am not a fan of soupy sweet chili. That meant that my chili cheese fries were sweet with a heavy Taste of cinnamon. However the fries themselves were good and the cheese helps to mask the sweetness so we made it through most of those. Now the hot dogs I was so excited for because I love Coney's I'm from Detroit who doesn't. But it just seemed that everything was made with cheap ingredients. My bun was torn in half, the hot dog was a small skinny hot dog with no casing that had no tooth to it. The hot dog was so soft I wasn't sure that I had bitten to anything when I bit down. That along with the thin sweet cinnamon chili and no mustard to counteract any of that ruined me. I can't say that I'll come back for the coneys or anything covered in chili. We should have just ordered a shake like a lot of the reviews said. All-in-all I admire any place that can stay around from the 1950s I'll probably even go back if I ever run across it for an order of fries or a pink lemonade. I mean not every place is made to sell everything right? Shrugs. I say go visit the place make your own decision, carry some cash, and then at least you get to say that you went to the famous chick inn Drive-In In. read more

It had good cheese and onions. The meat was ok, but the outer shell was very greasy. It soaked through the bag and got all over my car. I also had the sweet potato fries. The fries were not cooked enough to my liking. I did really enjoy the dipping sauce provided for the fries. Next time I might try something else. read more

This landmark drive up has served the Ypsi area since the 50's. I had not been happy with the quality of their cooking and the food. Hence, I stayed away for years. About six months ago I noticed the sign advertsing a wing ding special dinner for $19.99. Consisting of 18 wings, family size frys and a large cole slaw. I caved last night. The wings were excellent! Hot, crispy, non-greasy. The coleslaw was of the creamy variety,but not sweet. The frys were hot and just right. Although, almost too salty for me. But, all was very tasty. Chick-Inn is a local institution with a loyal customer base. About six years ago there was a testimony to that loyalty. The family was hit with a road construction project from hell. It was difficult to get to it. Yet, the regulars came. I decided to take my grandson for a great hamburger, old fashioned fries and a real milk shake. It took 40 minutes for us to figure out how to get to it but we got mad at the city, not Chick-Inn. The big burger with the family's special sauce and the shake was something he will never forget. I cannot eat that sort of Americana food anymore but I'll tell you this is an old school drive-in eatery. For several years, when you could no longer get a real seafood platter for a reasonable price, we got it at Chick-Inn! What this Dive-Inn is known for are the real milk shakes, old fashioned American style french fries, the big hamburger, and the side baskets of fried mushrooms & real onion rings. Yes, some regulars go for the chicken. Most locals call their orders ahead and do not have to wait long for it. Unlike, my chain restaurant experience, I cannot recall ever getting the wrong order, nor did the entire staff ever gridlock because we asked for our our fries or onion rings to be fried longer or a burger to have no pickles. When nearly every chain eatery has come & long gone from nearby Michigan Ave and Ecorse Road (Churches, Ponderosa, Lee's, Big Boy, etc), Chick-Inn remains, retro art sign & all! Its no Ann Arbor vegan or hypochondriac's transfat free deli but the customer base isn't the arts & sushi squad. When composing a review, sometimes I start off from the it-is-what-it-is perspective. And for a drive-in, the Chick-Inn is exactly what I want it to be. I have to admit that I'm a little sentimental about this place - I had a first date here with my longtime partner, and I also happen to love the Gories. But even before that date, I absolutely loved coming here in the summertime. Kluck's is another nearby drive-in, but the Chick-Inn is far superior in my estimation. Sure, I usually go for some fried stuff, and that's all pretty good (and pretty hard to mess up). The best thing here for me though, as others have mentioned, are the milkshakes. This is a strange twilight zone kind of surreal experience that may never leave you the same... It's kinda fun for a funny date with the wifey, but that's about it. Didn't try the fabled milk shake, but had a broad sampling of food. The burger was a bit dry and flavorless, the chili cheese fries were indescribable disaster. Eveything just tasted artificial and canned with an extra helping of grease. I think the Chick Inn may have gotten a new owner in the past few years. The music has changed from oldies to pop radio or country and the food isn't as good as it used to me. Their cole slaw used to put all other cole slaw to shame. Call your order in ahead of time and it will be ready for you when you get there. No bathroom and no inside seating, this is a true carhop establishment. My friends and I were driving aimlessly around town one day lonnnng ago and happened upon the Chick Inn. The chocolate/strawberry shake is the best shake that I have EVER had in my entire life. I guess it's a mixed blessing that it's now 5 hours away from me, because I would be there all the time gobbling down shakes and cheesy fries. The service was good and quick. The prices were low for the amount of food you get. Probably the best cheesesteak I've had in a long time. I went to U of M in the 60's and have been back five or six times since then (we now live in Atlanta) and I just found the restaurant on Yelp. From the posted pictures, it STILL looks exactly like it did fifty years ago. I can hardly believe it but it's true! Anyway, I'm ready to come back for a weekend and get the burger and fries. Now you go here for a specific experience, nostalgic for some, novel for others, the same way you make that 3 or 4 or 20 year trek to the Ford Wyoming drive in (and in a perfect world the Chick Inn would be located in the center of that drive in). You play The Gories 'Chick Inn' while you're eating...but just once...you don't want to turn this into an overly self-conscious themed visit. The word 'Quantity' on their outdoor menu has been misspelled 'Quanity' for 30 years. I smile everytime I see it. I have never ordered a Hammy Sammy but it sounds like fun. It seems a lot of my reviews skew toward nostalgia-related places. Hey, I'm not that old. I just happened to think that some of the places who have been doing this stuff for a long time tend to get it right generally. Chick Inn was on the list this weekend. Despite the sad sack car hop who was probably having a bad day, the service was prompt and the food was hot. I got onion rings and a mini burger. At $1.85, the mini burger was probably a 1/4 pound patty on a sesame seed bun, with ketchup, mustard and pickles. It was simple and delicious, and a lot bigger than a standard fast food burger. They did screw up my pineapple shake for peanut butter one, but I was willing to let it slide. Plus I didn't want to make the car hop feel worse. Anyway, the peanut butter shake was great, very rich. But it can't compare with a pineapple shake. You want a delicious summertime treat? Hop into the car and head to Chick Inn for pineapple shakes and an order of onion rings. Look, I was totally skeptical. It's a crummy drive-in. It's kind of dated. It's name is "Chick Inn". WTF?! But I was told to go and try it out. And it. was. great! I sat inside because I didn't want that fresh-burger-smell overpowering my new-car-smell. And I had a great time. The waitress was super friendly, made great recommendations on shakes and I really enjoyed it. The lettuce on the burger was crisp (being a snobby Northeasterner, I got the smaller burger because I can no longer Midwestern portions). If this place had vegan-chickpea burgers, it might be so quaint that it would qualify as hipster. Let's pray that doesn't happen because as the reviews note, it's great for families... And Northeasterners visiting family. As you can see in my profile (and tell from the text), I'm not in Ypsi anymore and I only make it back once every few months. A throwback to the old days and a gem in Ypsilanti. Came here recently and had the wings (pretty good, your "coney island" type wings), chili cheese curly fries (good but the chili is too sweet for my liking), and steak hoagie (real good, one of the better hoagies in the city of Ypsilanti). My number one recommendation would be the milkshakes (i had a strawberry and pineapple one), they are A1 and you can mix and match flavors. The only thing i will say is that the food here can be high and add up real quickly. Other than that, this is to me the premier DriveIn restaurant. read more

This place is wonderful! We have been here several times since driving by and finding it on accident. A happy accident, as it turns out. For the food: I've only gotten one thing each time we've been here so I can't speak for everything they have, but what I can speak for is their grilled cheese sandwich and chocolate milkshake. Bad because I want one every single day for the rest of my life. I also got fries the first time. Fries were good; nothing special. They were hot and freshly made though. My husband has gotten the Paul Bunyon (am I spelling that right?) and a chili cheese hot dog. He says that the burger was the best burger he's ever had, and he said the same for the hot dog. He's not a hot dog fan so it had to be good. The burger, he said, was amazing but made him want to hibernate. Hey do have a jr version of that burger so maybe that would be a better option for him. The place itself is cool. It's definitely a throwback to a time when I wasn't even alive yet. We've only eaten outside in our car. There are tables with umbrellas in the front, and I'm not sure if there is indoor seating. I feel like there *might* be a counter inside to sit or stand at, but I'm not sure. Basically you pull up to a space and place your order through an intercom. Your food is brogue out to you. Think Sonic (if you've ever been to one) but way, way better. The menu is broad with burgers, hotdogs, chicken sandwiches, a sloppy joe, and much more. Prices are cheap. The servers who have brought our food have all been very nice. The building and decor is really neat, very 1950s. They play music and, thankfully, it isn't music from the 50s (no offense). I'd like to go back and night to see it all lit up. It would be a great place for kids to go to see something so unique to our times, and I imagine that older people who visited places establishments like this year's back would get a kick out of it.
