I was originally planning to visit Rubio's in Irvine on my way out of town for the 4th of July weekend, but something last minute popped up that caused me to stop by the Outlets at Orange instead. Little did I know until I actually got to the outdoor outlet mall that there was a Rubio's here as well! In fact, there was also a Rubio's nearby in Orange on the other side of where the 5 and the 22 freeways meet. However, that closed (alongside dozens of other SoCal locations) and is now an Urbane Cafe. The reason why I was planning to go to Rubio's was because I had recently gotten an email where if I made a purchase within 2 weeks, I could get 500 bonus points. It had only been one week, and I wanted to get those 500 bonus points since it'd already be more than enough to get a reward. Any purchase would have worked, even a drink, though I wouldn't want to review a Rubio's simply for a drink lol. After a quick meetup with my friend, I stopped by Rubio's to get a small bite to eat. I honestly wasn't too hungry, so I was considering a $7 taco meal, which I had completely forgotten the details of since my visits to Rubio's are few and far in between. Luckily, a female employee who was cleaning near the front door offered to help. I quickly scanned the menu, but didn't see that $7 taco combo, so I almost thought Rubio's ceased it. No, it was still active, and she even explained more of what it was. While a $7 taco combo would have made for a nice small meal, I was intrigued by the $4.99 Baja Fish Slider. I had their Original Fish Taco numerous times in the past at the now-closed Lakewood location, but never a slider, which appeared to be that same taco in sandwich form. And with a toasted King's Hawaiian bun?? Why not?! They have two kiosks on the front counter, and I tried my luck with one. I would recommend using a kiosk to order since you can order some complimentary extras, which is what I did. In the case of the Baja Fish Slider, you can request extra Cabbage Slaw and extra Jalapeno Tartar Sauce at no extra cost. In the middle of placing my order, an employee got my attention to let me know they were out of chicken as he posted a post-it note on the other kiosk indicating so. Luckily, I wasn't aiming to get chicken, but imagine if they had run out of fish too as I was submitting my order! That would have made for an interesting scenario lol. I chose to dine in, and at the kiosk, I had to select a flag number and enter the number in the kiosk so they could bring me my order. There were plenty of empty tables inside, and I chose the community table close to the restrooms. They have a salsa bar there, but I bypassed the salsa since I figured the extra Jalapeno Tartar Sauce would be enough. The wait for my Baja Fish Slider was only about 6 minutes. However, during my wait, the female employee mentioned they were going to close at 8 (hey, I rhymed, and I didn't mean to! lol) PM, which was in 10 minutes! I got a little nervous that I wouldn't have much time to actually eat my slider before they closed, but based on my interaction with her, it did not seem like they were going to kick me out if it came down to that. The slider only took me about 3 minutes to eat, so I still had a few minutes to spare as they were closing. I did enjoy the Baja Fish Slider, but didn't think extras of the cabbage slaw and jalapeno tartar sauce did nearly as much to enhance the overall taste profile, so I pretty much regretted not getting even one cup of mild or tomatillo salsa as that would have made a big difference. The beer-battered Alaska Pollock was pretty hot to the touch, but I didn't want to let it cool down since they were closing real soon, so I just chose to deal with it. At least the fried pollock was a decent size, but now I wish I had gotten the $7 Taco Combo instead as that would have been the much better buy. Despite the Baja Fish Slider missing the mark, it was still good enough of a small bite to eat before making my way out of town. The two FOH employees also provided good enough service that evening, so I'm willing to bestow upon them a fourth star rather than just three. I wouldn't return to Outlets at Orange just for Rubio's of course, but if I had to be there for some other reason, I would consider a return visit, especially if I can get another 500 bonus points, speaking of which... I was only expecting to get 550 points from my $4.99 purchase there, but I actually got 600 points instead! It appears I got an extra 50 points for specifically visiting the Outlets at Orange location, but it also appears I could have gotten another 50 bonus points for purchasing a churro? At least that's what I saw in the app, but I had more than enough sweets already that I definitely didn't want a churro, even if it meant an extra 50 points lol. read more

I wish I hadn't wasted the calories. This Rubio is a lesson in "You get what you pay for." Are they all like this? I got the double protein bowl with mahi mahi and shrimp. The shrimp was undercooked and the mahi mahi was tough and overcooked. Avocado looked like it had seen better days too. Thankful for the salsa bar to mask my disappointment. Even the lemonade was a disappointment. I was able to order and receive my order pretty quickly though, so that's nice. It was also nice to sit on their "patio" and people watch because the interior seating area felt stuffy with minimal air flow. read more

The dining area was bright and tidy. The food was fresh and tasty. Their protein to veggie ratio is not balanced. I think an increase in their protein would make the food even better. read more

I hadn't been to Rubio's in a long time since unfortunately they've closed the location close to my home, but today I was able to enjoy this location... The restaurant was very clean and even though they appeared to be short staff, the young lady who took my order was busy multi-tasking by taking everybody's orders and bringing their food to the tables... She was very pleasant to deal with and apologetic at times! I'm glad I listened to her recommendation on the two different bowls I ordered because they were very tasty! When she asked me if I wanted to order anything to drink and I told her no, she offered to give me a cup, in case I wanted to get some water, and even though I didn't get any, I really appreciated the offer... If I'm ever in the area again, for sure, I'll be back to try other items off of their menu!! read more

We went to Rubio's and ordered two burritos and guacamole. Unfortunately, my fiancé found an avocado sticker, a chunk of avocado skin, and the stem (the brown nub from the end of the avocado) inside his burrito. I calmly asked to speak with a manager so I could show what was found. A team leader came out, apologized, and said they needed to speak to their boss -- and then never came back. After waiting, the front cashier pointed at us and asked, "Are you the ones with the burrito?" When I said yes, he responded with "Sorry, I'll talk to the kitchen people," and that was it. No follow-up. No manager. No resolution. It honestly felt like we were being avoided and brushed off. Mistakes can happen, but finding foreign objects in food is a serious issue, and the lack of concern or accountability afterward was extremely disappointing. Walking and shopping makes you feel a little hungry. We had dinner plans for later, so we decided to get something quick before then. We were debating on a pretzel or taco. This Rubio's location is tucked in an outdoor food court at the block of Orange. I went on a Taco Tuesday and ordered 4 tacos - chicken, carne asada, fish, and fish w avocado taco. I also ordered a margarita which came in a can. As I sat down and waited for my food, I noticed the AC was running probably 80-82 degrees, it was hot! My food came in 10 mins. Chicken and carne asada are mediocre, fish tacos are the only tacos that are worth to eat imo. My experience here was just average, hopefully you can crank up the AC next time. Man! I was so disappointed. I walked in on a Wednesday as we were waiting for our movie to start. Upon walking in, the place was a bit messy as I am assuming customers just left and the salsa bar looked like it needed some help. I decided to get shrimp tacos, but they were out! Out of the batter and out of the shrimp. They were out of most of the meats besides chicken. I ordered the mexican street corn bowl with chicken, it came out within 20 minutes and it was extremely salty! Not sure if they were rushing as there were other people waiting way before us for their food! I usually enjoy rubios, I think today was just a off day for staff and the establishment. The tacos here are really great! I got the Original Fish Taco Two Taco Plate and it was so delicious. The fish was huge and the corn tortillas was very tasty. I picked chips and Mexican rice as my side. The chips were a bit stale and needed a little more salt. I also think they accidentally gave me white rice instead of Mexican rice since the rice color was white instead of orange. The main star was the fish taco and I would definitely recommend to get them. The staff here was also nice and friendly when I came to pick up the order. It's funny how we keep end up eating here, when hubby said it's his least favorite of the fast/casual/mexican spots (Chipotle/Baja Fresh/Zaba's). (Is it funny that we always stop at Orange solely for the Lindt?) I got the chicken bowl (cubed cut chicken over rice) and hubby got the quesadilla. Surprised about the fries (seasoned), but that's a nice surprise. A nice selection of drinks at the fountain drink section, as well as two different tea drinks available too. (Oddly, our son wanted Charley's cheese steak sandwich instead of his favorite, kids meal; nine times out of ten, he'd get a chicken bowl.) This is my first time at Rubio's. I got the Fish Taco Plate it came with refried beans and tortilla chips The tortilla chips were OK they were a bit stale, the refried beans were actually really good but it was very hot and in plastic, they don't add enough salt to the beans though, the fish tacos are great, in it was fried fish, cabbage, and tartar sauce, there was more breading then fish though. The service was good, they were very patient. The ambiance was good there was a bunch of posters/paintings of their food. The salsas and hot sauces were mid, more spicy than flavor. read more

As soon we ordered she let us know the order has to be to go. We always like to eat right away because of the taste of the food. Then a man asked me if I needed help while I was waiting for food. I asked if we can seat out doors to eat. He didn't like my idea. He mentioned that they have to leave by 7:55pm. I wonder how they would leave early if the restaurant closing time is at 8pm. Never heard if this place before but certainly glad I decided to give it a try when looking for a light tasty lunch. I ordered two shrimp build your own taco kids meal which was the exact portion size I needed. It comes with a choice of fries, chips, rice or beans. I opted for the fries and chips so I can save and munch on later. The grill shrimp is flavorful and tender and pairs nicely with the fresh shredded cabbage and cheese. The flour tortillas is served warmed wrapped in foil. The warmth and softness of it almost made me want to eat it by itself. So good! The fries is lightly seasoned thick cut and tender kinda like steak fries but not quite as thick. Nice compliment with the shrimp. The chip are thin with a nice crunch which I prefer. It can be hard to find good quality healthy yet fast Mexican food. This covered all bases. Many vegetarian options too. I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again. Actually looking forward to it. Prices are reasonable, service was fast and friendly. Restaurant is clean as I watched the ladies quickly wiping down tables and throwing away any trash left behind. Do not come here unless you want to be given attitude by a worker who has red hair who has had "a long day." My wife came in to pickup an online order and was helped by this associate with red hair. My wife had placed her order 30 minutes prior so the food was on the window ready to get picked up. She asked the girl with red hair if she could also get a side of tortillas because she was planning on transferring her meal to fresh hot tortillas rather than the ones that came with the meal that were probably cold by now. She paid for the tortillas and then the red hair girl looked around for my wife's order aimlessly (even though the order was right in front of her). She couldn't find it so she proceeded to get the manager, meanwhile another girl jumped to the register and promptly found the order (again, it was right in front of the window counter, kudos to the second girl for finding the order that was RIGHT in front of the window counter). Red haired girl came out with the manager and saw the order was found. My wife then asks for the side of tortillas that the red haired girl charged her for when she originally came in to pick up the order. The red haired girl proceeded to make a stank face and my wife told her "why are you getting mad" and she replies with "because you are fucking annoying." This whole interaction happened while the manager was standing next to them. The manager told the red haired girl to go to the back and he proceeded to help my wife out. He gave ZERO reassure that there was going to be any type of disciplinary action for the way this red haired girl talked to my wife. All he could say is "she has had a long day." Let me tell yah, I work retail too and I have long days every day, heck I had worked a 6am-5pm shift the day all this happened (today). I would never treat any guest the way that my wife got treated and I would have immediately given this red haired girl a write up or put her on a final for disciplinary reasons. Worst part about it all is my wife is pregnant and works at the mall and Rubio's is one of her go to spots because that's all that she can eat. Now this established has been ruined for her and she no longer feels safe entering here. Do yourself a favor and do not come here. Vegetables were fresh, shrimp was juicy. Try the shrimp taco trio. Look for special deals throw out the week. Combos came with beans and chips. Always filling when you're hungry. I noticed that your location is supposed to close at 8 PM. I arrived at 7:15 PM, and as soon as I walked in, the cashier informed me that food was only available for takeout, despite there being 15-20 people dining in. When I asked why, she said the kitchen wasn't working. I don't understand how that affects customers who want to sit down and eat a meal. If the kitchen isn't functioning properly, how are you still serving food? Additionally, the restrooms were closed, yet I saw employees going in and out. Located in the middle of the food court area. RUBIOS offers a healthier solution to patrons who shop and work nearby. They do offer fresh food which I have tried for 2 days straight. The chips on the sides are mehhh tho. They do offer table service. Seatings are somewhat tight and close. The restrooms were coded but clean. It's a simple 3.6 out of 5. My boyfriend and I came here for a quick bite to eat before going to the movies. It wasn't too busy, but there were some people enjoying their meals when we arrived. Service was pretty good and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. I always love filling up at the salsa bar at Rubio's and this one's was pretty clean and well stocked. The worst service ever and the food portion of my salad was RIDICULOUS! I asked the server if he could take it back and add a little bit more lettuce because it was very evident that it was not the regular portion. I get these salads weekly and they are never like this with little lettuce! He told me flat out NO! This place was also very dirty! The utensils were all gone and the salsa bar was depleted and food all over area of the salsa bar. I ended up having to purchase another chicken chopped salad in order to get the right portion!
