Rubi's who use to be in Maxwell Street with long lines that I waited in is now here in Pilsen. I am so happy I can come anytime to grab an order of my favorite taco which is the al pastor and pork grinds with green salsa. This one taco is full of succulent flavors is enough to fill my appetite for a few hours. I tried other combinations like beef and chicken taco's but none of them are a match for my favorite. The interior is small but I enjoy the seat by the bar where I can watch them make the food. I highly recommend Rubi's. read more

Taco Tuesday on a Thursday....... Our journey to find the best tacos in Chicago, took us to Pilsen......Love the ecclectic look of the shops and restaurants, particular on the street the restarutant is located on. ....Metered street parking......I was told to be sure to pay the meter.......This is a a heavy ticketed area.......We were warmly greeted as we entered. The dining area was festive and welcoming. I really liked the vibe of community dining. There also was bar seating. We opted to eat at the bar......As i'm seating there wait for my tacos, I was thinking Tequila. My carne asada tacos were up. My wife had a chiken quesadilla and a elote to go. Carne Asada served with onion and cilantro with limes on the side......Is there any other way? Paired with a Mexican coke. I usually don't need salsa but I wanted to try it. There is a community fridge with the salsa stored in them. My wife noticed a sign when we walked in saying the salsa was hot. I tired it before I out it on the taco.......There's a story where my wife put hot sauce on her tacos without tasting it, it was a thing.........Back to the tacos.......Excellent........Heavenly even.......The tortillas had to be homemade. The thickness of the tortilla held these stuffed tacos together perfectly. Sure meat was falling out the front and the back of the taco but not through it. 3 tacos were filling, more than might be greedy. The chicken quesadilla, was cheesey with pulled chiken......Delicious........Oh and the elote, that my wife ordered to go? Ok so I was actually looking for a different taco spot, but stumbled upon Rubi's as it was too cold to keep walking and I had remember seeing mentions of it on several different Reddit posts. Walking in, I liked how accessible the menus were. I know it doesn't mean a lot for some people, but for a old head like me, I still enjoy holding a full menu vs having to pull it up on my phone. The ambiance was nice, kind of like a bar, very casual and great for groups. I ordered a asada and a chorizo taco. For me, the sign of a great taco is there steak taco. So the positives...there was alot of steak. Not enough for two tacos, but definitely filled up the whole taco. The homemade tortilla was very nice and very authentic. I loved the different choices of sauce. The not so positive...I wasn't impressed. The meat itself was tender but not bursting with flavor. I really needed their sauce to really spice up the taco. I felt the same about the Chorizo taco. Was really expecting a huge explosion of flavor, but what I received was a bountiful filled taco on homemade tortilla. I also ordered guac and chips. For $11 I thought it was a bit overpriced. The guac was a 7.5 out of 10. It was good but needed more kick and more salt and lime. But I did add a little salt to it and the lime that came with my tacos were way too small for me to squeeze into anything more than my taco...so no lime juice to enhance my guac. We stopped in on Sunday afternoon and was immediately greeted by a wonderful lady at the register. She answered all of our questions and was very patient with us. We ordered 5 tacos, carne asada, al pastor and chicken tinga. They make their own tortillas, which are larger than most ! Each taco topped with onion and cilantro. The tacos were so huge and loaded with meat, we took 2 home. The chicken tinga was too spicy for me, but the al pastor and carne asada were excellent. The al pastor is cooked with charcoal , resulting in a rich smoky flavor. The elote was a true standout and probably the best we have had. I tried the Limonada de Pepino con Pina, cucumber lemonade with grapefruit, it was refreshing. There was seating inside and counter seating was also available. I am leaving a review because the staff by the tables were rude. You have 30 min to dine (trust me, you will have no problem finishing much earlier because the food is SO GOOD!!!) and we had maybe about 10 minutes left of our table space. It was pouring heavy rain outside so we sat and ordered an Uber. A staff member (the big man) made us get up and leave because "my next party is here". There were many other tables open and available, and the party did not even end up sitting where we were. We were forced to wait outside in this horrible rain (it was pouring, this is the same rain causing travel issues this past weekend). He saw that we were waiting for an uber and that there were other tables AND WE STILL HAD TEN MINUTES. I don't know if he was in a bad mood or something but boy was an asshole......!!! I've moved out to the suburbs and have a little one now so we rarely come by here anymore. Yes, the prices went up just a tad, but it's no big deal and it's to offset the cost of owning their own place. Love that Rubi's tacos is much more accessible. I wish they made this move BEFORE I moved out of the city after being a block away from their Maxwell St location for the last 15 years of my life!!! Funny how things work out. Quesadillas taste as good as ever, slightly crisp and chew tortilla, packed with meat and ooeey gooey cheese. I still get mine the OG way with everything (lettuce, tomato, cilantro, onion) on it and it costs more to do that now which is fine. I've had their elote as well which is yummy and filling. 1.5 quesadillas is the sweet spot for me. I always get the huitlacoche quesadilla and split an asada quesadilla with my husband. When I was there last they were playing their TV segment on Travel Channel filmed a few years back that my husband and I had a millisecond of fame on! Came here for the first time and was greeted with such lovely service - I would come back just for the friendly smiles and the people who work here. I got to try the taco de hongos, taco de flor de calabaza and the green pozole (which I was told is only served on Thursdays). The pozole entree came with a smattering of toppings and the meal was complex with a variety of tastes and textures. Loved adding the chicharron as it soaked up the broth and added a nice crunch to the soup. Will be back to try some of the other menu items, especially the meat taco options. read more

Another little gem in the Pilsen area! I can never seem to get my booty over there during the right times but yesterday was a SUCCESS!! It was a gorgeous day so sitting outside was the best choice. When you walk in you notice all the decor. It's a very fun rustic vibe. It feels somewhat beachy. You're greeted by someone and you place your order, they hand you a buzzer and you sit and wait. I don't think it was a full 15 mins before everything arrived to the table . It was incredibly busy, so I appreciate the efficiency. The order was a limonade with guava . It was so refreshing and delicious. Along with that , I ordered 3 tacos . Two carne and one chorizo with an order of chips and guac. Now, yes we know I'm super particular about many things lol! However, this guac was actually so fire! The ONLY thing I did was squeeze a little lime juice on top because that's my preference but it's so so so good! The tacos were definitely the star though! I really enjoyed the ration of meat to tortilla. Sometimes it feels like you have 3-4 tortillas and very little filling. That was not the case today! Randomly stopped by here after another place I wanted to check out was closed. I was excited to try a couple different tacos (Al pastor and the chicken tinga). Everything was good, and the food came out quick and hot. The spice level was good on the tinga and the Al pastor was delicious. These are the best tacos I had so far in Chicago! I know that's a big statement, but it's really good. The tortilla is handmade and it's a little thicker than your usual tortillas. They give you a lot of meat too. It was the owner's bday so there was a live singer and it was def loud and festive! A lot of entertainment going on and busy of course. They were passing out free cake slices too which was nice! There is seating inside, but there's only like 4-5 tables but they're big enough to share with others. Rubi's outgrew the Maxwell Street Market after so many years of propping it up, and they finally decided it was time to open up their own shop in Pilsen. It's kind of sad since now the Market is dying a slow death, but the crowd is definitely willing to make the trek over a couple neighborhoods for these tacos. They've slightly expanded their menu to include things like guac and elotes, but tacos and quesadillas remain the star of the show, especially their al pastor. Charred just to the point where it's got the texture and flavor but not tasting burned, I also got mine with lengua so I really had that soft/crunchy contrast. My dad, who already had 1.5 tacos elsewhere before coming here, demolished his two steak tacos, one in a chile de arbol salsa. And of course, you have to mention their homemade tortillas, which provide the right amount of chew while still holding all that wonderful filling inside. I will say the service is kind of weird. We came one time and had no issue, though we had to sit at the bar because it was so busy. Last time though, while waiting in line we were told it would be a two hour wait if we wanted to dine in - but by the time we paid, we were able to snag a table immediately. Also my brother-in-law ordered for here while I ordered to go because of the time we were told. Once my brother-in-law grabbed a table, I just took my food to sit with him, - but I was then promptly told if I ordered to go I need to take my food to go. He said it was fine this time because our family was with us, but I'm not sure why the hammer had to come down so hard. Even with all that, the tacos are worth the wait (and that wait usually results in a line out the door). Just mind their limited hours (only open til 5pm and only Thursday-Sunday), but it's still not surprising that they can swing this after only being open on Sunday mornings before. read more

My favorite is the asada quesadilla and the Al pastor taco. I'm not a big fan of pork, but their Al pastor is something special. Coffee and horchata are good also. Delicious tacos and quesadillas! So many salsas and sauces to choose from! Can't recommend them enough.

I think all the times we've been to Maxwell Street Market, we were never patient enough to wait in line at Rubi's. So we were glad that at 1 p.m. on a winter Saturday, we could park out front and walk in at their location on 18th. Prices are $5 a taco and $6 for quesadillas that are larger, with a thicker handmade tortilla, and filled generously with great fillings. We went with al pastor (off the trompo), mole rojo (pork), flor de calabaza and huitlacoche (the latter two in the quesadilla). The quesadillas here are like larger versions of the tacos with cheese, but still capable of being eaten as a handheld. They did have a jamaica con fresa, but the jamaica didn't break through much. Horchata was also available along with Abuelita hot chocolate. Seating became available at a table after we placed our order, but there was still seats at the counter too. Seems like the number of tables is well balanced against take-out orders and how fast food comes out from the kitchen. Our order took a little time, but we had a place to sit and even near the door, the heat was cranking enough to keep us warm. read more

I wanted to like this place because I have enjoyed eating their food at the Maxwell St. Market. What was I doing at the Maxwell St. Market? People watching, of course! Yes, to those in the know, the street is transformed into great place to eat delicious, made from scratch, Mexican street food. Well Rubi's tent at the Maxwell St. Market always had a long line. As you are waiting you can see the tortillas being made from masa, fresh salsa being made, and meats being grilled. Her food attracted lots of people from all over Chicago including many from UIC (students and faculty) next door on Halsted St. Well, I was excited when I heard that she opened up a brick-and-mortar place on 18th St. I happened to be in the area after shopping at the Randolph St. marketplace at Plumbers Hall. I was impressed that I was asked what type of tortilla I wanted for my tacos (regular corn, blue corn, or nopal) to go along with the vary of fillings (steak, mole, alpastor...). The place is nice and modern looking with a completely open facade on warm days. I was equally impressed with the unique Mexican aguas frescas that they offered. Then explain the rating?!? Well, the next day something I ate here did not make me feel good. In my head I was ready to give them a great review, but then the next day rolled around and reality set in. In their defense, I have eaten plenty of times at their market stall and have never gotten sick over the course of many years. I tried a different selection of tacos. Every single taco was so salty. The wait is horrendous. 40 minutes for three tacos is simply unacceptable. I guess this place has gone viral. That's why people rave about it, but in all honesty, it doesn't live up to the hype. Take time to thank your customers for the 5 star reviews. It seems you perceive 3 stars as negative and you must respond in a passive aggressive way. Don't throw that "small business" mumbo jumbo at me. There are a lot of taco/ Mexican food options in Pilsen. This place is good, not great. They claim to be "f*** delicious. And as seen on Netflix. ( I never seen this on Netflix) I think this is hype. We came here bc the place we really wanted to eat at was way too busy and didn't want to stand in line for 45 minutes. Steak has good flavor, I like the salsas and love their tortillas. The server mistakenly gave us guacamole, then came back 10 minutes later and said " you guys didn't order this". Then he took them back. I thought that was weird bc what if we ate out of it. It's little over price in my opinion. $6 for a taco. Also there's a sign saying elote la garra style which was a flea market on 26th street. It's not la garra price that's for sure. $7 yikes.
