Let's be honest. You get drawn into the western vibe of this place. Keystone is beautiful, the area is A+. The restaurant is charming at first, then you notice the dust everywhere. You catch a whiff of the cafeteria like scents, and you know- you're in for it. I felt vulnerable after noticing everything- including a sneak peek into the kitchen( the line cook was putting lettuce and tomato onto a burger with his bare hands. A guy was prepping salads with a bushy, uncovered beard. Because of this I reverted to ordering what I thought was the safest- chicken fingers. They were banquet straight out of the bag. We had dinner here a few nights ago, when we visited Mt. Rushmore. The place was fairly busy for a shoulder season weeknight. Wife ordered the walleye fillet with rice, and hers came out pretty well. I ordered the bison ribs with broccoli. The ribs were beyond well done. Yes the meat fell off the bones, but they were pretty chewy and lacking in flavor. There was a cup of BBQ sauce provided which helped a bit. As for the broccoli? It too was very overcooked, limp and without taste. I was somehow anticipating fresh sautéed broccoli, not -- whatever THAT was. Room ambience was nice, a good Western vibe to it all. Pretty unlikely we'd be back to see Mt Rushmore again, so a repeat visit here is not likely either. read more

The only thing I like about this restaurant is the ambience and the location nearby Mount Rushmore. Here is a photo of the country fried steak after I tried to scrape off the over fried burnt breading that the server said is normal for this restaurant. Meat was overcooked, tough and cardboard-like. My college dorm version was much better than this. Fries were soggy. I couldn't even trade for other food because no one from my party liked their food. Other food in my party was overcooked and dry (i.e. burger). They charge more if you don't pay with cash. For this quality of food the prices were not worth it. Overhyped and I don't understand the high ratings of this place. Note to management (if you care): next time someone expresses disappointment/disgust in their food and clearly didn't eat much of it, consider comping/refunding their meal, which is standard for reputable restaurants. A measly 20% off of a ridiculous price (for the quality and location) for ONE DISH is insulting. I wish I didn't waste my time here. read more

This place comes highly recommend. First you have this person asking you if you want anything from the bar. He has no drink menu and if you are not ready he does not come back. He is rude and come to find out at the end drinks are from another establishment then the restaurant. They don't tell you that. Service was good and the food is good. Trout plate, could use a little more spice. Chicken fried steak and smothered Burrito all good, potatoes skins are big but dry. Atmosphere is good and loud. read more

Our experience at Ruby House was simply terrible. The food was just nasty, service was basically non-existent, and I regret ever noticing this place. A restaurant like this could never exist anywhere other than a tourist trap area. It is complete garbage and the worst experience I've had at a restaurant in years. We began to suspect there was a problem when we sat outside for 5+ minutes without a server - who then took 10+ minutes to bring out drinks. There was nobody else around and they weren't busy. But we were hungry and had hope it was just a fluke. It wasn't. About 10 minutes after placing our order, the server reappeared and told us they were out of prime rib. So we picked something else. More than 20 minutes later the food came out and it was gross. Mind you we had been waiting 40+ minutes at this point. The $27 baby back ribs looked and tasted like leftovers. They "indian taco" fry bread had grocery-store taco mix on top with a piece of fry bread made yesterday. The fried shrimp and french fries were clearly made in dirty oil (dark brown/yellow) and the kids wouldn't eat it. (If they are hungry and won't eat french fries - there's seriously something wrong.) The prices charged for the menu items were simply ludicrous for the quality of the food.Just because a restaurant looks nice, doesn't mean it is. The server never came back out to check on us and we had to get the attention of another employee that was just standing around, who let someone know and our server appeared five minutes later. The decor is like you're back in the old western days and the food was delicious and the service I give a 10+ I'd like that when you go to this establishment that they have a separate server that will just come out to do your drink orders and then you have your waitress that takes care of your food they go above and beyond to make sure that you're OK and also the entrées come out in a timely manner and the food is hot and we end up eating here two nights in a row because we really thought what a great place why should we go anywhere else so you traveling to Keystone to see Mount Rushmore stop at Ruby's restaurant. My husband and I returned to Ruby House for dinner this time rather than lunch. The service provided by Anna was excellent. The restaurant is always clean and the ambiance is wonderfully vintage. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his spaghetti and meatballs. I on the other hand ordered the country fried steak and was somewhat disappointed. The meat I would guess, was purchased breaded and frozen which was then dropped in a fryer. I find it frustrating that restaurants haven't figured out that it isn't difficult to buy fresh meat and bread their own rather than cheaping out and buying pre-made. I will say the Gravy was excellent and not doused in pepper which has been my usual problem. All in all, our experience was overall good. We'll be back and I'll try something else next time. I would recommend the restaurant for anyone coming to Keystone. Don't forget to at least walk thru the saloon for more pictures to add to your trip. read more

Recommended to us by a local. Not the greatest. New Orleans Cajun pasta wasn't spicy, way too much chicken and not enough of the other stuff. The shrimp was okay, dipping sauce wasn't that great. We were in Sturgis and after a long day on the bike stopped in Keystone to walk around and grab a bite. Everywhere we went was crowded, but we decided to try the Ruby House. Not too bad. Food was ok. They don't serve liquor in the restaurant but you can walk over the the bar next door and bring it to your table. They also send a server from the bar over every once in a while to see if you want anything. So you're paying 2 bills if you want anything alcoholic. Not a big deal. Place was a little "tired" and there were flies. Kept shooing them away from the food. Not an awful experience but not great, either. read more

Don't come here for the food. One star at best. The absolute worst Filet Mignon I've ever had. Tough, Chewy, and a general bad flavor. I did not eat half of it. One of our party ordered the ribeye, it was also tough, hard to cut with a steak knife. They did not eat over half of it. The baked potatoes were so hard and overcooked. The breaker mushrooms were inedible. Frozen, old, and mushy on the inside. They had Probably had probably been in the freezer for years. The ambience is pretty cool. And gets three stars. The service staff is filled with student visas, poorly trained, barely speak English and have no clue about the menu. Service overall: two stars. This restaurant was a fun place to stop in and check out just for the historic decor in the entire place. The photos, animals, and guns on the wall made this the perfect place to stop in when checking out stuff from the history of the Black Hills. The service was slow and not engaging and the food was okay and not worth the price, but I am glad we stopped in to check it out. We were hungry and wanted a home cooked meal. We thought we had found the right place. However, after our food came to the table we weren't impressed. My husband ordered the ribeye steak cooked medium w/a loaded baked potato and a salad. His steak was nothing special & the salad was full of carrots. They were out of baked potatoes so he got loaded French fries instead. When he received the loaded French fries...it was fries w/a side of cold cheese, baking bits, & a tube of cold sour cream. My daughter and I both ordered the chicken fried chicken. She ordered fries and I ordered mashed potatoes. The chicken fried chicken was straight out of the bag you can get in the freezer and the mashed potatoes were just not good. We also had soup that came with our meal. We took one spoon full out of each cup and left it sitting there. Tasted straight out of the soup package. My son ordered fettuccine Alfredo w/shrimp. It was just ok. Here's the worst part...our less than desirable meal was $97. The two stars I gave was for our server. Our server was nice and attentive after he finally came to the table. This is down to the bones Country from the pistols, rifles, and muskets on the wall to the very sweet waitress dressed in a saloon girl dress. They have what you would expect like game meets like beef, elk and bison (stew in a bread bowl or burgers patty) and even sarsaparilla. I'm from N.J. I've never seen let alone tasted sarsaparilla. (It's like root beer with a little less bite). My wife had the Indian taco ( that's what they call it) she liked it because the bread was soft and not soggy. My son had the Buffalo stew in a bread bowl. He liked the meat, broth and bread. Everything else was overcooked and stringy. I got the Ruby burger because I didn't want a patty. It was juicy and made to order. Just what I needed. We all love The sarsaparilla!! If your in Keystone check it out if not to eat then go have a drink at the bar. Decided to stop here for dinner before heading over to Mt Rushmore. Ruby House is a quaint Western-themed restaurant with pretty converted oil lamps as lighting, a lot of antiques, and bold Western drapes, wallpaper, and furnishings. We had a 30-min wait, but worth it! Grabbed a Georgia Peach margarita - oh so good!! - from the next door saloon and sat on the outdoor porch area. The hubby opted for the buffalo stew and potato skins. I chose the prime rib. Oh we made the right choice!! The prime rib was tender and delicious - the accompanying baked potato and salad made for a great meal! The unsweetened iced tea was spot-on as well! The hubby raved about the stew and skins. He couldn't finish it all! So our dog Londo will benefit from it tonight when we feed him. The drinks come from the next door Ruby Garter saloon. Their Ruby Red-headed drink comes with a complimentary shot glass and is pretty decent cherry liquor cocktail. Had a glass of Malbec, too - wasn't the best I have ever had, but it wasn't bad either. Very touristy place. If you want to enjoy a game of eye-spy while waiting for your food then this is the place. But if you want great food- find another place. The food is edible just not good quality. My steak was more rubber-like than meat. The salad had enough carrots to feed an entire family of rabbits. Ruby house restaurant had incredible atmosphere, but the food is pittiful. 1. Potato soup: it's some sort of cream of chicken, possibly water down with broth with three or four big chunks of hard potato pieces and bacon bits. The flavor was not great, and I was unable to eat, spoonfuls as I had to cut the pieces of the hard potato. 2. The fried mushroom was very greasy, the flavor was very good though. 3. The Buffalo steak I ordered medium rare, and got rare, which is OK. The issue was it was the toughest, rare steak I've ever had in my life.. I was shaking the whole table, trying to cut it, and it took about three minutes to cut one piece off with a steak knife. I chewed for about 10 minutes trying to eat that one piece, the flavor was not great, and it was very very tough. 4. The buffalo stew did not have one piece of buffalo in it, it had two very small pieces smaller than the first digit of my pinky finger. 5. Chicken fried/country fries steak: it was the best thing that we ate, but by far was not a great chicken fried steak. We give it a 5/10. 6. Molten lava dessert: this was very good, and we were starving by the time we got it, because none of us were able to eat much from our meal. It was a Plus that the bar next to the restaurant has live music, but they are different businesses so we had to wait for one of their waitresses to come by to take our bill which took a very long time. Visiting town in early October. Very charming restaurant with very nice staff. Appeared to be worn but fairly clean. Decor is fun and the legend of Ruby is a great addition. Attached to the saloon. The problem I had .... Flies. There are flies everywhere, I get it but there were a lot. Swarming our food. Swarming the bathroom, toilet and trash cans. I don't want to think about how many are in the kitchen. All and all the food was expected, nothing awesome. Probably wouldn't return because of what the flies represent. read more
