First time at this place and WOW, a great experience with both the food and service! There is no need to read the whole menu - get the White Chocolate Bread Pudding Pancakes and thank me later (although all the food there looked delicious). I was in need of food and did a search for restaurants near me. Low and behold, Ruby Sunshine pops up on my screen. We have two of these restaurants in Charleston, so I was happy to see a familiar name. There was a 40- 50 minute wait for dining when I arrived. So, I sat at the bar since I was alone. One seat left just for me. Hehe.. Huge establishment with ample amount of seating. Even the bar area was roomy. Aniya was holding down the bar area and had the sweetest personality. I went simple with my order, this time. I ordered the Classic Buttermilk Pancakes with a side of chicken sausage. Then I spiced it up a bit with the Lavender-Lemon Seasonal Beignets. The beignets were slightly overcooked but still tasty. The pancakes were so fluffy and light, and the sausage gave everything the right balance. The person who brought out my food had such a familiar face. It turned out to be Frances, who I know from the Charleston area. She is a regional manager for Rubys. Such a small world. Stopped in after our flight from Reno to Charlotte for breakfast before church and it was delicious! We grabbed the Shrimp Benny and the Fried Chicken Benny and both were so good and filling. The fish had no flavor and served in a muddy messy. The grits were at least okay. The Benedict was soggy. Traditionally, an egg Benedict is served on crispy English muffins but at Ruby's they served it over a buttermilk biscuit. The biscuit wasn't toasted crispy and the fried tomato didn't taste fried; both resulted in mushy bread and veggies. The pancakes weren't a win either. I wanted to love this place but I can't. I've been 3 times w/ separate parties and each time, there's been an issue with the food and/or drinks. The drinks, especially, are lackluster and fall flat. I'm unsure how a mimosa or Bellini is literally flat, without any fizz, and watered down but they consistently are. (You'd think I'd learn to stop ordering them or going there - but, my visits to this spot have been spaced out over long periods of time and I honestly forget the former problem until it happens again). During my last (and final) visit, I was really hopeful and excited for my friends to try it given the vibes of the area and the yummy-looking menu. Unfortunately, they were not impressed at all. 4-5 members of our party received substantial discounts due to their food and drink orders not being up to par and requiring remedy. Such wasn't requested by anyone but was offered by the restaurant. Our waitress was a gem and tried her best to ensure we were happy with our experience. What was lacking was out of her control. Note: If you do try it and get the sweet heat chicken & French toast bites, be aware that it has a strong smokey flavor that not everyone is too fond of. Our sever was so very helpful (so sorry I forgot the name), however, she was the epitome of southern hospitality and for that I truly appreciated her. The restaurant was extremely busy, but we were handled with grace and care. Thank you. On this visit I got the Gulf shrimp omelet with cheese grits and a buttermilk biscuit. The food was as expected! The more unique southern dishes were probably the best options from the menu. The French toast was average. The eggs benedict with fried green tomatoes and a side salad was solid as was the shrimp and grits. The beignets weren't very flavorful but that was attributed by the table to the sheer lack of powder sugar, which may have been an anomaly. Friends suggested Ruby Sunshine in Charlotte, NC. We gave it a try. After a 40-minute wait on a Sunday, we were seated in the back by the kitchen--unfortunately with a clear view of disturbing food handling. The expo (who checks orders before they go to customers) touched pancakes, omelets, and scrambled eggs with his bare hands--after tapping on the computer monitor, handling receipts, wiping his hands on a dirty rag and apron!!! Two boxes of gloves sat RIGHT in front of him, but he only put them on AFTER we complained!!! The manager's response: "I didn't see him not wearing any gloves." Never mind the THREE cameras along the ceilings in the kitchen area. Not one staff member picking up food or prepping carry out orders said ANYTHING to the expo as he touched food with his bare hands! That TELLS YOU, this is their common practice! Screw the gloves-- they're only there for show. We also saw another waitress scrape cucumbers from a small bowl onto a plate with her bare hands!! She also brushed her hair back with her hands and continued serving people. She wore NO gloves and didn't wash her disgusting hands!! We were so grossed out! People at other tables next to us by the kitchen started watching too. We literally witnessed the expo digging his fingers into scrambled eggs WITHOUT gloves!! What are you even looking for? Egg shells? Gold? YUCK!! Of course we had to stay and watch how our food came out. The expo used gloves (I mean, why not, when the complainers are watching??). Verdict: Nasty-- cold eggs, lukewarm pancakes, cold grits-- best three things: 1) Our waitress was nice and apologized (not the manager);; however, she only said "understood" when we told her our food was cold!! 2) Fried green tomato on my plate was seasoned and served hot; and 3) Line cooks handed every plate to the expo wearing gloves from the time we sat down. He should take a page out of their book! Manager comped our orders 50% for "the trouble." Not worth it-- we didn't finish that nasty food!! This place is unsanitary and careless about food safety. We heard that the weekends were packed here so went on a Tuesday and luckily had no wait to grab a table. We tried the mimosa flights which had preset flavors of blue lavender, watermelon pomegranate, pineapple peach bellini, and blue orange. They were all super delicious but my favorite was the blue orange. A few of us grabbed the French toast bites as an appetizer and they were the perfect sweet shareable! I then got a crispy BLT sandwich with fries for lunch and was surprised at how reasonably priced this place was for the amount of food I got. Overall parking is a bit challenging in this area of South End but there are some nearby garages or street parking spots if you can find it. We initially had a 45 minute wait via Yelp and ended up waiting 2 hours to eat. They were slow to bring our food and after it arrived, I needed to wait another 15 to receive utensils and napkins to eat. I ordered cream for coffee and they brought me something spilled. They have only 2 bathroom stalls so the lines are insane. My shrimp omelette had no salt or pepper or seasoning of any sort. The biscuit was hard. My tater tots were burned. The grits were just boiled in water, not creamy or flavorful at all. I didn't finish my food. My mimosa flight was cheap warm champagne with sugary juices. Overall - my meal just was not good. Ruby Sunshine I was excited to try some New Oreleans-style brunch at Ruby Sunshine. This place was packed on a Monday morning, so that told me all I needed to know. We started off with the Fried Green Tomatoes (7.50): Fried green tomatoes topped with lettuce, remoulade, red tomatoes and bacon-onion jam. My southern friend told me that this was a southern staple so I'm glad to have been able to try it. It was good, I've never intentionally eaten tomatoes while they were still green. It was a great appetizer that wasn't too battered in flour. Then I got the Fried Catfish & Grits (16.25): Fried USA-raised catfish with pork tasso cream sauce over creamy stone-ground grits, served with a buttermilk biscuit. This was delicious, the grits were great. It was a good catfish filet, and the batter wasn't too thick as well. The ratio was perfect. While we waited we enjoyed corn hole and benches outside since it was lovely weather. Then we decided to get a drink, realizing you could in fact sit and eat the bar, but by then we had been waiting and our table should have been ready soon we just ordered a drink. I had the seasonal mimosa which was cranberry pumpkin I think and it tasted like fall. We were seated and immediately ordered the pumpkin marshmallow beignets. BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE. The fluffiness. The pumpkin. The marshmallow fluff. I will dream of it. I should have just ordered a second as my entree. We waited a good bit for our entrees, I had the seasonal tacos which were yummy. My tater tots were not piping hot so I imagine our dishes were sitting out for a minute before they were brought to us. My friend enjoyed eggs Benedict with shrimp and fried chicken.
