Update: Co-Owners being sued by bankruptcy trustee for improper financial handling of company, so basically my complaint and service follow up will get nowhere. Hi, Went to your location and spent $60 the first night, was a very poorly run dinner shift, dirty tables everywhere, employees standing around, floors filthy, slow delayed service, no service follow up, forgot our drinks until 1/2 way into meal. Went next morning hoping it was a fluke, it was not. Spent $35 on breakfast and was a very poorly prepared meal, you advertised thick cut bacon, it was not even close to thick cut, your toaster is obviously broken, toast and English muffin only toasted on one side, inside of English muffin un-toasted and soggy. Walked by the restaurant around 4pm that very same day after breakfast while we were shopping outlet stores and restaurant was even dirtier. We chose your restaurant for patio seating so our very well behaved dog didn't have to sit in hot car. Since we are traveling, I don't expect much except maybe your supervisor can relay to the manager that your service, cleanliness and quality is very subpar. I can't believe how great of service my family received here. We came in after shopping with a party of 18-20 and were seated within 5-10 minutes without calling ahead or a reservation. We had ordered drinks and entrees within the next 10 minutes after being seated, and food came out insanely quickly. It was fresh, hot, and delicious. We had dinner at Ruby's tonight. It is usually our breakfast spot, but decided to try dinner tonight. Everyone enjoyed their meals very much. My hickory burger was quite tasty. A very large sandwich including cheddar, lettuce, tomato, bacon, onion rings, and a tangy bbq sauce. Excellent service. The food was delivered quickly and our server checked on us throughout the meal. We'll certainly be back for breakfast but now we know that Ruby's is a solid choice for dinner as well. read more

So it's been years since I've been to a rubys diner, ever since they closed the mission valley location. Upon seeing this at Carlsbad I got super excited it's been awhile. So my husband came here for lunch after shopping, got seated super quick, got our waters and utensils within 2-3 mins and our server was super friendly and helpful. She then took our order, with ink 15-20 min we got our order. I got the ruby melt which was super delicious with the grilled onions and the crunchy toast combination was just amazing! My husband got the Caesar sandwich, he said it was pretty good but he likes my sandwich better though. The fries were fresh and crunchy just too bad they aren't doing the bottomless fries. The interior design was super cute and it felt like a museum inside, though the ceiling can use a bit of cleaning, you can see the planes and decorations had dust thicker than my shirt. This places needs a good cleaning for the amazing food they are putting out they should at least have their place looking spotless and clean from top to bottom. I'm hoping when I go back here the place would look a lot better and the ceiling would look a lot more cleaner. I just wouldn't want any dust on my food and ruin my appetite. read more

First time here, after a long day of shopping (group of 5 plus child) and driving from out of town we were starving and decided to eat here for lunch. The pictures outside the diner looked good and thought it was such a cute place so we decided to try this place, very diner vibe from the interior decorations to the workers uniforms. There is plenty of seating and There was a group ahead of us waiting to get seated. When they did we were waiting for someone to come back to seat us, but it took a while. We waited about 3-4 mins looking around to see if anyone was going to seat us or even greet us. Finally someone came and got seated. Menus are conveniently on the table next to the condiments which I thought was great. Our server came back took our orders I ordered a turkey burger with pepper jack cheese (extra charge) with a cesar salad. It took a while to get out orders.But the burger was full of flavor and very big and filling. The salad was perfect with the dressing premixed it was just the right amount. Since the local Ruby's closed down in Temecula a few years back, I was pretty excited to have lunch at this location while my co-worker and I waited for our car to be finished at Jaguar down the street. We walked in around lunch time and were immediately seated. I don't remember the name of our waitress, but I put that she was friendly in my review draft so apparently I had no issues. I ordered the ranch burger, which I don't remember being on their menu previously, but MAN it was delicious! I love ranch, bacon, and avocado on anything... so this one definitely hit the spot! Came here for breakfast. Hubby had the breakfast grilled cheese and I had the breakfast burrito with turkey bacon. I am giving this meal three stars because most people may enjoy such huge portions. For us it was truly overwhelming . I really would rate it two stars because of that and also the turkey bacon being underdone along with the potatoes. Food was bland too. The side of black beans was very spiced and tasty though. My burrito plate kind of all mushed together because it was overloaded and had so many toppings. No way to eat it with your hands. Hubby's sandwich was okay but, again, way too much food. The server was very attentive and we appreciate the service we received. Our lesson is to stick with burgers and salads. Our server, Erik, went above and beyond to provide amazing service. He was also the manager that day. Our food was delivered promptly, and everyone's drinks were refilled right away. We were impressed with the hospitality and Erik's cheerful attitude, especially considering it was Black Friday. Our table of eight all agreed that the service was outstanding! But, I do not recommend going to the mall where Ruby's is located on Black Friday because parking was a nightmare. Also, I got a burger with a gluten-free bun. It was amazing!!! Most places don't offer gluten-free buns, and most gluten-free bread products are dry and crumbly. This bun was toasted just right and it really tasted like real bread! Awful restaurant, I had breakfast with my Wife while shopping recently. The food was terrible, burnt dried out bacon , soggy so called OBrien potatoes and they managed to overcook one egg and leave the other one half raw . We always eat here every time we are @ the Carlsbad outlet. The kids love it! This location has a vintage train track and a little Ruby's car that you can sit in and take a picture. I don't love it so much because EVERYTHING on the menu is greasy and severely fattening and the food is not that good. The low carb/light menu is really deceptive. The low carb burger has 917 calories. We always look up the nutritional value although they don't display it on their menu at this location. My daughter ordered the Super Burger: a burger with avocado on sourdough bread and a side of chili cheese fries. I had a bite and would say that was one of their better items. I've tried another burger from the premium line before but it wasn't that great. I ordered the classic burger with no Ruby sauce and a side of onion rings. It was as big as my sons kids burger but when I looked up the calories on My Fitness Pal it was 885 calories ! DH ordered a turkey club that also looked pretty good although the bread (roll) looked too thick. Next time, I'm coming for only a milkshake. Not because the food isn't good, but because you will be full of you order a burger plus a milkshake. The milkshakes are huge.. I love Ruby's! It reminds me of my childhood when the highlight of my fridays were the chicken tenders or Ruby Dogs! This Ruby's is right in the middle of the outlets and you can stop by for a meal or even a milkshake. Sometimes, this Ruby's does get busy because the outlets are very touristy but if you come on a weekday, it's pretty empty. I really like this Ruby's because it doesn't feel cluttered and the outside seating makes it nice if you have a dog with you. The staff is really friendly and helpful. I know that in the future, we won't. Well, maybe I'd have the apple pie again. But only that. The other 3 items I mentioned were disappointing. I believe that my wife and I chose the wrong menu items. The other 7 people in our family were all pleased with their orders. Service was okay, and the restaurant was pretty well organized. Have come here for years and sadly it has just gone down hill. The food was not my concern but the quality of service is just awful. Food arrived before our waters, server literally just took our orders and we never heard from her again. Not crazy busy but even if you're busy, just stop by and check in. Takes a few seconds. She walked by us several time and attended to every other table aside from us which made us feel unwanted. We had a manager luckily grab us our food but had to constantly get up to ask for basic necessities such as sides, to go box and check. The manager clearly saw the lack of of service from the waitress but never bothered to take charge of the situation. We bit our tongues about complaining because we didn't want to cause trouble for the server but I had mentioned to the manager we couldn't get a hold of our waitress. Iv been in the service industry for 10 years, I get it, I don't expect much but a simple check in and acknowledgment is BASIC in a restaurant establishment. Ruby's diner is always in the corner of my eye while shopping at the Carlsbad Outlets. I have stopped in twice now and have left satisfied each time. The atmosphere is fun, with trains and planes scattered throughout the restaurant. The waiters and waitresses all donned cute diner outfits and were friendly. The food is good and set at a medium price range. The burgers all come with an endless basket of fries, but we never had enough room for a second round. The first time I tried a beef burger and the second time I had turkey. I actually prefer the turkey burger. It was moist and the flavor was just right. I also highly recommend the strawberry shake, very creamy and tasty. This is a solid 3.5 star place (I'll give them 4 for this review) and I would recommend it if you're looking for lunch in the middle of your shopping. read more

came here after legoland to use my $30 worth of gift cards that i won!! woot woot! we were seated promptly in a nice large booth under the train tracks (yay!) my 12 year old doesn't get nearly as excited as he did as a toddler. i was more excited by all the old school metal toys in the display cabinets ...super cool! it was like an episode of one of those people who pillage through packrats homes for cool stuff. we had one kids meal...mac n cheese (it was precooked and microwaved kraft)...it came partially hot and partially cold (hence why i knew it was nuked and not stirred)...they re-nuked it and brought it back piping hot. we had 3 other burgers..all were pretty good...it's no burger from flemings (what i had last night) but pretty darn good. son had the burger with bbq sauce and onion rings...hubby had the one with sourdough and avo ..wish i had gotten that one...so good! i got patty melt and added lettuce, tomato and onion..it was just ok...kinda a sad little burger. i had mine with a side salad...boys had fries, which are refillable. service...splendid food....above average speed...A+ kid friendly A++ nostalgia/decor A i'd be back...but there are so many other options nearby..may be a while before this is back in my rotation..maybe we will come back for just a shake...double vanilla is what i crave! read more

Ruby's Diner is a take-off restaurant of an American Institution...the 1940s' diner. The place is festive and tries to replicate the fashion and decor of this swing-time, post-war era. They serve what you would expect...a load of burgers and fries. They make a mean coleslaw and their ice-cream floats are yummy. Since they opened in 1980, their menu has expanded to include more health conscious items. I don't think these are very popular as the bad stuff simply smells too good. This location is always busy especially during holiday shopping seasons and weekends. Expect to wait a bit but when you sit down the service is always on as you are only allowed about 1 minute before a wait-staff person approaches you. I should know....I worked for this company a while back. They go overboard a bit in the courtesy department. Sometimes it does get annoying to be asked how you are doing every 5 minutes. They also make the waitstaff do too much sidework like cleaning out the ice-cream machines. You just don't make that much in tips here to justify that kind of labor. read more

Came here to try their shakes. My son ans his Dad have this contest trying to find the best shake in SD. He heard they were int he top 10. They tried the Oreo shake and liked it but can't move it up into the top 5. The burger was very greasy and made us feel a bit sluggish. Popular diner at the outlet which is always steadily busy. The cutest thing is the kid's menu, which folds into a car. We wanted one and we're adults! Portions are slightly smaller than traditional generous diner portions. My half and half ( tuna melt on grilled sourdough with a side salad, no refillable fries) was $10.50. My daughter's patty melt did have them, and the fries are brought to your table very hot and crispy. Nothing too exciting but seems like many tables had ice cream shakes. I had this Portabello Kobe burger and it was pretty fantastic. Didn't really notice the kobe-ness but still a solid greasy salty burger served piping hot and fast. Fries were ok, nothing extra-ordinary. The airplanes and trains make this place pretty cool for geeks like me. And the ruby-vision TV had my youngest mesmerized the entire meal. He's never been such a well behaved boy eating out before. If you are staying at the Holiday Inn Pea Soup across the street you can just walk a few hundred feet to get to Ruby's! I love Diner food. This place is really good. They can get pretty busy depending on the time of year and how many tourists are out shopping that day, but overall, my visit was pretty pleasant. Was hungry but it was late, 845p so I called in an order at Rubys. I asked for a small Cesar and a Greek salad. Let's just say my bad for ordering a salad from a burger joint. But I didn't want something too heavy. The best thing is the romaine lettuce. Nice and crispy. But you'll see my cucumbers. They should have been in the trash and not in my salad! Ugh. Eggs were cooked to order better than most. Butter was not melted on three, and not found at all on one of the cold pieces of inadequately toasted bread. Potatoes were just ok. Hash browns would be better. Bacon was unevenly cooked;raw in parts burnt in others. Sausage was just ok. When they cleared the extra dishes they took the knife, leaving me without one. It's a little expensive too. It's an ok breakfast and better than most around here. And, this is about a general trend, I don't like being told to "drive safe" after breakfast by someone I don't know. This , mock friendship thing is a little weird, but every waitress and waiter in their 20's seems to do it as if their misguided manager insists. Another thing about this Breakfast is they don't provide any decent napkins. The flatware is wrapped on little more than a tissue paper, and the dispenser at the table is only those 3x7 tissue like napkins. Subsequently I had to go wash my hands after breakfast.
