    Mushroom Swiss Burger with Fries

I love the vibe in here. If feels as though you are transported back into the 1950s upon entering. There are plenty of parking spaces and you can either sit inside or outside (upstairs). We chose inside with the cool AC. We had the mushroom burger, grilled cheese for our little ones and shared onion rings and calamari for our appetizer. Our waiter was very prompt and friendly and took good care of our family. Oh, the food was delicious!

This Ruby's has the best exterior of any Ruby's in the history of Ruby's. Very cool with the classic cars outside. The retro atmosphere inside has the 50's music and red booths which are kept so clean they look like new. There was an average-sized crowd on a weekday lunch hour. I was seated in a booth which I preferred over the stools at the counter. They also have rooftop dining but I'm not sure it was open at the time. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger (which comes with fries) and a mint chocolate chip milkshake. The burger was as good as a diner burger can get. An above-average beef burger with several strips of smokey-delicious bacon, melted swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce, and their secret sauce. The fries were typical diner fries but were done perfectly and a massive amount were scattered on the plate. My milkshake came with the tin (essentially TWO milkshakes) and was excellent. It had a ton of tiny chocolate chips and was really thick. The mint flavor was subtle and, while I wish it were a little more prominent, it was still delish. Ruby's always makes a fantastic milkshake. According to my bill, Efrain was taking care of me that day, and he was really hustling, providing great service to the entire room. He was professional and polite and was the kind of waiter you wish you had every time you ate out. If you find yourself hungry as you drive along PCH on the south end of Laguna, you will find great diner food at Ruby's.

After a day at the beach with my brother's family and mine we came here to have dinner. They sat us immediately with a friendly welcome. Our waitress was amazing. Patient and kind to us and the kids. It's the cutest place to eat at specially with the kids. The interiors are old fashioned and cool. The second floor has outdoor seating overlooking the ocean. I went up to watch the sunset for a few mins. Loved it. The food was good, we got burgers, sandwiches and salad. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I got the Chinese chicken salad and my son got the club sandwich. Both good choices. After dinner we ordered ice cream Sundays and ice cream shakes. All amazing, I would say better than the main meals lol ... next time I'll skip dinner and have one of these milk shakes. Overall a great place to eat while in the area specially with kids or large groups. We had a great experience.

Great trip down memory lane dining at this Ruby's location with all the vintage cars and 50's decor. You can't beat them for Burgers, shakes, fries and other good stuff! Fun place to visit across from the Montage in Laguna Beach and my Impossible burger was DELICIOUS!

Well done corned beef and hash, the food of the gods!!

Everybody loves Ruby's!! I haven't been to this one in 20 years. It has changed zero, which is good. I was sad that we lost the one at the end of the Huntington Beach pier... Eating at the Ruby's inside John Wayne I got hooked on the corned beef hash.. I told them to crisp it right up and that's exactly what they did!!! It caramelizes the corned beef and makes it taste like candy! Actually salty candy!! The whole idea behind caramel corn, salty and sweet dichotomy!!!! Although I didn't ask for it, they crisped up the potatoes too, which were great .... Perfect service and comfortable booth in Laguna Beach..... what more could you want?

Ruby's Diner is always a good choice when you want something classic. I got the fish and chips, a cherry Coke, and shakes after, and everything was honestly really good. The fish and chips were crispy, the cherry Coke hit, and the shakes were super good too. It's just a fun, easy spot with solid food and a good vibe. Definitely a place I'd go back to.

I was driving down the Pacific Coast Highway and decided to stop in here for lunch. I've been to other Ruby's locations in the past, but this one is somewhat unique. They have several vintage cars parked out in front. The diner inside is not spacious, but it was not an especially busy day, so there was no problem. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich for lunch, which I thought was pretty good. It had two kinds of cheese inside and it came with a side. I ordered the sweet potato fries which was a slight additional charge over regular french fries.

This isn't my first time at Ruby's but it is my first time at this location. I LOVE this location. They have old school cars outside for the kids to look at, and they also have rooftop seating that over look the ocean. It was a little chilly so we opted to sit inside but the rooftop I'm sure is popular during summer! We were immediately greeted and seated in a booth. Armando was our server and he was great! He was patient with the kids ordering their milkshakes and food. Everything we ordered came out correct and as ordered except I had asked for Cajun fries with my burger and Armando quickly brought me a separate basket of Cajun fries to correct the mistake. We will definitely be coming back to this location specifically! The burgers were delicious and tasty, everyone wished they got the Cajun fries after trying them! Can't wait to come back!

Made an effort to stop by here when I drove by on the coast. Foods here was great and the service staff was kind. It's a pretty unique Ruby's since it has the classic cars up front. Recommend you stop by for a shake just like the olden days

Staff: The team here was nice but Jaime our server was the true rockstar. He was extremely attentive, friendly, followed up with what he said, helpful, and made our dining experience a great one. Brought in umbrellas when we asked and promptly turned off the heaters when requested. You could tell he was committed to our happiness. Quality/Quantity: The food was good as it always is here. We had a large group but sorry I didn't get the chance to take too many photos. The restaurant itself has been here for many years but perhaps a little refresh would be a good idea. There are several places showing aging with scuffs, paint chipping , and the bathrooms are showing their age. Though this must be done while maintaining the era that it represents. Despite this our experience was a really good one. Value: Seems to be fair in my opinion. Overall: I love this restaurant and sadly they have become harder to find with some locations closing. We enjoyed our day and will be back again.

Food and service get COMPLETE OPPOSITE reviews. The burger and chicken tenders were fantastic (love the ranch) and the shakes tasted great. Now the service unfortunately was SO WEIRDLY BAD. I brought someone here who has never been to California telling them this place is so good and the atmosphere is cool and old diner vibes. Instead we came at about 3pm on a weekday and there were only two other couples there besides us. Every single interaction we had with our server was because we flagged him down to our table and not because he had come to check on us. Took 15 minutes before our server came and then he told me only order drinks right now and he'd be back for the food order. Crazy how after saying that he ended up completely forgetting about our shakes and I had to ask for them when he finally brought out our food. One of my favorite things to do is dip my french fries in my shake so I had to sit there and wait for him to go make our shakes which I saw him go do after I asked about them. And because I was so focused on us not getting our shakes I didn't realize we didn't get any ranch on the side for dipping and didn't want to eat my chicken tenders without it so I waited over 5 minutes for our server to come back into the room somewhere but he was no where to be found. It took so long my food started getting cold so I just walked up to the front counter where what looked like the manager sat on his phone. I asked for some ranch and then finally got some. The manager seemed completely uninterested in being there and was on his phone most of the time while we got terrible service. At the very end our server disappeared again so finally we just got up and went to the front and asked to pay. Our server hadn't even put together our bill yet so we had to wait for him to do that before he came up with the bill and then walked away promptly without saying anything so I awkwardly said can I pay with my card to the sweet girl that was working that day who had arrived at the end of our time there and she checked me out. I always tip but this time it just felt so wrong to do so with how we were treated so I paid for my food and left. You can see our server in the background of the photo with my shakes and also can clearly see how I wasn't exaggerating when I said there were only two other couples eating in the entire place. Sadly I don't see myself ever coming back. There's other locations I can go to in Orange County that are SO much better.

Double bacon cheeseburger and the fried green beans! Highly recommended oh my gosh everything was perfection!

I've been here a few times now and I'm not understanding at all why they have negative reviews. Ambience is fantastic, the service is great and the food is good! It's well priced! It's fresh! So the only thing I can think of is that there must be a competitor nearby? I love the location the rooftop is beautiful. This place needs to have more reviews that are positive. Every time I see negative reviews I'm surprised by it. As far as for them being rude to people that are not white? Almost every time I've been there my weight stuff and the person greeting me and feeding me has been Mexican? So something is up with these negative reviews for sure.

It's been many years since I've not only been to Ruby's but to this location. The last time I was here, I had dined for lunch with an old co-worker. The place is just as it was over twenty years ago. Goodness...I've aged myself. We arrived during sundown on a summer day and left close to closing time. The restaurant barely had patrons so we were seated immediately. The seats are bright red just as they've always been, with white walls and old style framed poster girls. The hostess and server were polite, as well as a young lady whose name escaped me. She was not our server but she was very observant and noticed that sitting in the booth we were in, was quite uncomfortable. She approached us and offered to seat us at a table that would be much more accommodating. I didn't even ask her. She was just an awesome young lady. What we ordered; 1) bacon cheeseburgers with fries - My kid who loves the underrated Farmer Boys burgers, said he would choose Farmer Boys and Red Robin over the Ruby's burger. He liked it, but of the three it wasn't his favorite. 2) hickory burger with fries - hubby loves this one because of the onion rings and bacon. 3) kids Mac n cheese with fries - free with an adult entree on Tuesdays. Looked a bit dry but the kid ate the entire serving. 4) kids cheeseburger with fries - also free with an adult entree on Tuesdays 5) three chocolate milkshakes - SO DELICIOUS 6) simple salad - This is romaine lettuce with cucumber, tomatoes and croutons. I couldn't make a decision on dressings, so I asked for balsamic and thousand island on the side to figure out which one I wanted to have. I should've just done ranch. Both balsamic and thousand island were way too tangy for me that it was not enjoyable and burned my throat. Also not a fan of romaine for salads. 7) bowl of clam chowder - too salty and barely had any clams. I was honestly not in the mood for Ruby's and despite my saying I wanted to go elsewhere, this is where we ended up. From how I recall the food many years ago, it just wasn't that good anymore. It's a nostalgic place and I enjoy the theme. I was not satisfied with dinner on this day. Would I come back? I guess? Not sure. If I do come back, I'll try the guacamole or the super burger instead. Thank you for the wonderful service though. We really appreciated it.

We came in at about 1230 on Saturday May 23, and were able to sit right away which was nice. The problem is when a restaurant is slow the service can be too. It took a while to order, our coffee was only filled one time, and sat empty for about half of the meal. My sourdough toast was not provided at the meal and I had to ask for it. I was also surprised that it was a single piece of toast. I've never heard of a single piece of toast being delivered with a meal. My wife also ordered the combo breakfast with the smallest sausage I've ever seen. It was actually funny when we saw it. They even messed up my daughter's order (delivered potatoes instead of fruit), but they did provide her with her fruit subsequently and it was a nice fruit plate. We even had to remind them of the whipped cream we ordered on the pancakes. My corned beef hash and eggs were OK but nothing I would write home about. Breakfast was average / below average. Im pretty disappointed. I grew up in Laguna and I have been to Penguin Café at least 100 times and I've never had an experience like that.

It's a walk up and order type of place, the cashier was not the friendliest but I also think it had been a bit busy just before we got there. The space has ample indoor and outdoor seating, and since we don't get to enjoy outdoor dining much during the summer back home, it was a nice treat. All the staff we came in contact with were incredible professional BUT not mechanical which is a definite plus. Placed our orders: We always start with a cinnamon roll wherever we go! Ordered one and was disappointed as it was a version that resembled a not-so-good puff pastry Elephant Ear thing. Too dry for me. My friend was a little more forgiving. We also ordered the PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE which more than made up for it. THATS SAID AND DONE... The YOGURT BOWL was amazing! She mentioned the LEMON CURD was "magical". I had the BAGEL AND LOX. OMG! It was delicious!! The arugula and the dressing - not exactly sure what it was, was RIDICULOUSLY tasty. I think it had an avocado base? I ordered a side of BACON - which you can decide on the cook - soft or crunchy. I'm guessing it wouldn't matte because it's amazing! Thick cut yumminess! I ordered a side of SPINACH - not offered on the menu but, as it is in a dish I wanted to see if they accommodated. They did! And I was expecting steamed greens on a plate. But, they use a high quality olive oil because I tasted it and was surprised. Very happy! We enjoy a few GUAVA MIMOSAS at the recommendation of the gentlemen. He was right! Finally, the coffee. Comfortable ambience. This place checks all the squares!! If you haven't been here make it a regular spot on weekends. It's worth the trip.
