I was working at Lackland and looked for a local BBQ place for lunch. So many 5 star reviews with comments like the best BBQ they have ever had. That settled it, I had to go. Parking is kind of difficult, but I committed and there was a food semi truck blocking the exit of the lot. The staff is very friendly and it's nice looking place with a lot of picnic tables. Service is fast, which should have been an indication the food was sitting in a steam table for hours. I ordered the two meat plate with two sides for $15. The quantity of food seemed far for the price. That's where the good ends. The best part of the meal was the smashed potatoes. Creamy and cheesy. The brisket was moist and tender, but that's where it ends. No bark with flavor and a negligible smoke ring. Same with the smoked turkey. No perceptible smoke flavor. The spicy green beans were okay, with little potato nuggets, but not good enough to order again. I'm disappointed that Yelp Elite 23 members gave this 5 stars. I'm questioning whether they are honest reviews or pandering for Elite status. My reviews will always be honest, good, or bad. read more

I have been waiting to try The Rusty Bucket, every time we have gone by, it has either been on a closed day or we have missed the business hours. So, you can imagine how excited I was to have the opportunity to try it out! It was so difficult to make a decision while looking at their online menu, everything seemed delicious. When we received our order for pickup, we quickly checked it and everything looked so good. When we arrived at home, the food was still warm. When I opened my plate, I was delighted. the brisket was beautiful. I ordered lean brisket, and lean brisket can be a bit dry, but this was the opposite. It was pull apart moist and It didn't really need any bbq sauce, but I still had some. I was also expecting a leg quarter with my plate, but to my surprise it was boneless sliced chicken breast. The chicken was very flavorful and moist as well. The sides were delicious. My husband was quite please with his plate as well. I was able to sample his three meat plate which had turkey, brisket and pulled pork. The meats were delicious and the sides were also quite tasty. I am so glad that I was finally able to get some BBQ from The Rusty Bucket, it did not disappoint. This place recently got a new pitmaster and they know what they're doing. this place is on cupples road off of highway 90 and is frequented by a lot of military people. Today I got a half a pound of mixed brisket. It was moist tender and sliced just right. in the lobby that have as much pickles and onions and bread as you want including two different kinds of BBQ sauce. The brisket had a nice Smokey flavor and had a great smoke ring on it and good bark. I'm going to try the sides next time to see if they are just an afterthought, or if they truly complement the meal. Both the ribs and the chicken had good smoky flavor, the ribs weren't dry, but the chicken was a little dry (I think it's boneless thighs). The ribs and chicken both had A LOT of cracked black pepper on it, which I didn't mind but I know others who do. Although the corn wasn't actually creamy, as you'll see in the pic, I still liked it better than the Mac n cheese as the Mac was pretty mushy. I really liked the bbq sauce. If there's more than 1 kind, I don't know what I got because I only got 1. It was tangy and a little peppery and I really enjoyed it - this was my favorite thing out of everything I ordered. The banana pudding I really wanted to like. I was so excited about it. It looked like it should've been delicious, but there was a strange flavor. The best way I can describe it is like that flavor when something's been in a refrigerator for a long time. I don't know how else to explain it. I know where Rusty buckets gets its name from. It's the rustiest place I've ever eaten at and the toilets are like buckets. They're disgusting! The standout items were the perfectly cooked brisket, flavorful bark, tender, mouthwatering greatness, the turkey was tender, peppered, but could've used a touch more smokiness.
