I had the brisket sandwich with a side of potato salad. Brisket was so tender it just pulled apart with ease. Great smoke flavor. Potato salad was average but still good. My boyfriend had the combo plate with brisket and sausage and well the sausage was amazing. If I could of ate more I definitely would of ordered some more sausage. There was a lot of traffic coming in and picking up so they had a steady flow of customers. The girls working the front were nice. There did run out of ice and unsweetened tea but refilled as soon as someone asked. Inside is small, about 7 picnic style tables but big enough for like a family of maybe 8. Potato salad was great and the sausage was awesome. Sadly, that was about it. All the food tasted like the container it was in, so everything had this plastic aftertaste. The sweet potatoes, which I was sooooo excited for, were kind of awful. Definitely canned. The brisket was mostly fat and my family couldn't finish the pulled pork because of the plastic taste. We really liked the brisket. You know it's good when you don't need to use sauce. They do have three options for sauce. I tried them all. I liked the spicy. We orders the family deal. I have ordered delivery a few times via Doordash and despite the moderate distance from this smokehouse to my door, I have been pretty impressed with the food. Both times I ordered brisket (default is apparently lean) and jalapeno sausage. As another reviewer noted, the lean has palpable flavor and has not been dry. It's like an improved version of the BBQ at B Daddy's in Helotes. The jalapeno sausage has noticeable flecks of pepper and sports a good texture. Both of these meats pair splendidly with their sauce (yes, even the brisket). Sides have been pretty good. The green beans have a spicy kick and the mac is sufficiently creamy. The only item I have had so far that I probably wouldn't order again was the chicken and it was decent. Since I don't really feel like driving in the times of covid, Rusty Bucket has become my go to BBQ fix. read more

The smoked turkey was surprisingly good, and we really liked the smoked pork and ribs, the brisket was ok, Id pass on that or ask for a sample before ordering that. The sides werent that great but definitely SKIP the desserts. They were bland and shortening was able to be tasted. However my son thought the chocolate cake was ok. Do not get the peach cobbler. The atmosphere is pretty cool, but the coolness ends there. The one star rating is for their potato salad which was pretty good. The brisket is bad, not juicy, no smoke ring, no bark. I'd heard tales of a West Side BBQ Joint that had an Award-winning Pit Master making moist brisket and killer ribs. Nobody could remember the name until finally a friend came thru and told me it's called the Rusty Bucket. Well with a name like that it just has to be Ol'timey, and definitely worth a try. Finally the stars aligned and I found myself poised outside the place on a Friday just after 1045AM. There were already a few cars in the lot and I read on their sign that they open at 1030AM, so I didn't have to wait any longer than my stomach wanted to, since the smell of the pit had stirred up the hunger beast. I traipsed inside and ordered from a place that looked like a hoosegow. (Look it up it's a thing) I always want to try everything but I settled for a Rib plate with Brisket and 2 sides. I chose potato salad and coleslaw and added a Jalapeño link too. I saw they had fresh lemonade so I had that as well. The lemonade was fresh squeezed, even had seeds in it, the sides were Texas traditional mustard potato salad and light vinegar coleslaw. All were tasty and worthy of seconds. I enjoyed the link very much, it had plenty of bits of jalapeño but wasn't too hot, it had a nice med to fine grind and natural skin casing. The Ribs (2) were tender but not quite falling off the bone. The rub was a sweet surprise with it's mildly spicy yet sweet flavors, it caused what is known as "lip smacking" goodness. Excellent ribs! Now the Brisket, it was the stand out of the plate. Moist and fatty with a caramelized exterior that I would have loved if it was available as burnt ends. The seasoning was savory with a little special secret flavor that I think was coffee. I'll ask next time. The brisket is competition quality good. It's something that only a low and slow pit can produce with just that right amount of smokiness, but not heavy on the smoke ring, and a perfect bbq coating that was black and not burnt. I'm getting a pound of this next time. A man with an apron and a hat came out from the kitchen and was checking on every table, he knew several of the customers by name and some had brought in family members from out of town. Always a good sign when customers bring in new customers. I'll have to think of which friend I want to gift with this new found treasure. I will be returning and for only $20 I left fill and satisfied, only sorry I didn't have room for dessert. I saw a piece of pecan pie that had my name on it for next time. I recommend trying the Rusty Bucket and see if you can tell what the secret seasonings are or maybe the guy in the apron will let us know. Good stuff Ya'll! read more

The office lunch crew wandered into the Rusty Bucket on a Monday and found the restaurant filled with people in uniform. They're no dummies: this place offers a whopping 50% military discount to get your week started right! The food was good but not great. I had a three-meat combo (brisket, sausage & pork loin) with two sides (mac salad & green beans). The sausage was smoky with a snappy casing, but the interior texture was a bit too homogenous for my taste--kind of like a turkey hot dog. The pork loin was nice but a little dry. The brisket was pretty good, but it really tasted more like a nice pot roast--without any bark or smoke ring to speak of. It was so pale that I couldn't tell it from the pork at first. The best thing on the plate was the green beans, which were very flavorful and a little spicy. I also liked the mac salad. One of my colleagues had a brisket sandwich. He liked the meat, but he said the bun was stale. Minor gripe: water is not free. You can buy a bottle of water for 99¢, or they'll give you a refillable cup for $1.99. I'm no cheapskate, but come on. The bottom line is that this is a decent little barbecue joint with comfortable ambience. This place is pretty good, but Definitely super unhealthy. I went for a run later that day after having gone for lunch cause they have military discount on Mondays, and let's just say I was hurting. I couldn't run as fast as normal and couldn't breathe (maybe they add a lot of sugar to their recipes), but I was off my game. However, their food is pretty good. I always eat my whole plate when I go. I also like that it is small and original cooks (a ma&pa type of place). Service is great here. Don't let the outside appearance fool you. It may look small and rundown, but it is alright inside and lots of people. It gets packed often around lunchtime during the week, I can't speak for the weekends. Chicken is bbq'd, which is tasty. Brisket is great too. My roommate loves this sandwich (the lonestar, I believe) that has brisket, pulled pork, and sausage inside a bun.
