Delicious. Great setting. Long 45 minute wait for a table, but worth it. Food was flawless from the caveman hearty appetite ribs to the feminine light sashimi salad~ heaps to choose from. Chicken was truly unbelievable, just cooked to perfection. I should mention that everyone's in a jolly good mood as they're getting their Napa on, so you should be too. This place is really surprising. I went there without checking yelp first (oops) and was blown away. I was expecting good fufu food since it was located at a prime spot in Rutherford, but it was hardly the case. The rotisserie chicken is spinning in the corner and has been for hours looking amazing. Since I already picked out a delicious cabernet I went with the steak...YUM! Also, for this being ground zero of tourist trap central the prices relatively reasonable. Only downside at all is there were clearly tourists next to us who hadn't hear of yelp so they were audiblizing their meal play-by-play, which was kind of annoying. Overall a small price to pay for a great meal, great service and of course great wine! read more

Really, waiting an hour an a half to 2 hours 85 minutes for us, and I was checking in) to be seated, having to be outside in the cold is RIDICULOUS! If the owners think life should be like this, you are sadly mistaken. And, Hostesses with attitudes, made this experience, really poor. 2) The drinks, EXPENSIVE 3) The Food: Delicious but nothing 'special', this is a chain. Nice to see chicken roasting, big ovens, a novelty in Napa, I guess. 4) The service: quite rushed, worse than a chain. Not a leisure dining place, I guess they are told to rush you since there is a 2 hour wait for a seat. Bottom line: If you got hours to kill, your blood sugar is stable and you have a lot of money to buy booze and appetizers, then by all means, enjoy. I used to manage for Hillstone and am disappointed in the change at the patio of Rutherford Grill. Brought my dog here and wanted to have dinner. Then was told that only apps could be ordered on the patio. I was at a high top that could have easily accommodated a couple orders of ribs for my wife and I. Come on Hillstone... don't become so efficient that guest experience is hindered. Understand that the lower top tables are unable to accommodate the level of service given, but allow the possible option for the tall tables, perhaps after 4pm when the bar rush declines. read more

Perfect place to end a day in Napa. First and foremost - There is no corkage fee, this is a huge selling point for me. Glancing at their wine list they do seem to have a respectable selection but after touring and tasting all day I always end up with a bottle or two I just can't wait to get home to open. We got there around 5:15 on a beautiful Saturday, just after most tasting rooms closed so it was pretty crowded with a 'two-hour' wait. We had a nice little buzz going and they have an outside bar so we decided to tough it out. Switched it up from wine with margaritas, the outside bartender was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Drinks hit the spot and we chatted it up with other parties while waiting for about 45 minutes before we were called for our table, not too shabby. Once seated our server was right there, despite the packed dining room she didn't seem rushed, knew the wine list, menu and daily specials inside and out. While it was always clear who our server was, attentive and wonderful, they have teamwork down; we even had a chef at our table painting us an amazing picture of their desert offerings after our dinner plates were cleared. The Food: Deviled Eggs - I'll save you some time, order two plates, that good. Our second plate came out with our entrees and I was happy to eat them alongside my ribs. The perfect hint of mustard and cayenne in the mix. Spinach and Artichoke Dip - I am partial to Spin Dip, probably my favorite pub food and Rutherford Grill's may have been the best I've had. It's 90% spinach, not overwhelmed by cream cheese. They serve it with basic tortilla chips but that's all you need, I was actually spooning it onto my deviled eggs, mmmmm. Barbecue Pork Ribs - I split a plate of ribs with a friend, the perfect portion after some appetizers to have room for desert. :) The ribs were perfect, fall off the bone tender and not totally smothered in BBQ sauce (although I wouldn't have been upset if they were, that sauce was great). Served with shoestring fries and coleslaw, both of which belonged on the plate, not 'blow you away' good but the slaw was different and complimented the ribs. Tomato, Bleu Cheese and Beet Salad - I stole a bite from my friends plate, the pickled beets were great and served warm. Desert - We order a slice of Key Lime Pie and a slice of Carrot Cake for the table. Both were awesome. The Key Lime was creamy and tangy with a graham cracker and pecan crust. The Carrot Cake was rich and spicy, they had a simple light cream frosting instead of a heavy cream cheese one which I usually love but this was perfect. The Price: Very reasonable! Our bill was something like $95 for three people, granted we were mostly drinking our own wine (without a corkage fee) but we ate well and left happy. Overall: They earned all 5 stars. The place operates like a well oiled machine, the food, service and ambiance are superb. Also, the timing was perfect, we avoided all the traffic heading back into the city. Napa is known for the scenery, wine and amazing restaurants. I have been here twice and both times I was blown away by what I ate. When you think about it, I didn't really order anything special but everything is well seasoned and cooked to a T. I mean perfect. Today's Simple Grilled Salmon-I am always wary about ordering fish at a restaurant because 8 out of 10 times, it's overcooked and dry. This salmon was moist, flakey, and flavor just danced across my tastebuds. Rutherford Rib-Eye-Cooked perfectly to a juicy, medium rare on the inside. Wonderful grilled taste, tender, soft slab of meat. So good that the future hubby slyly reached over to eat some of my rib-eye. First time was cool, second time okay, but hey enough is enough! My meat! That's what you get for ordering fish :) (Special of the day)Lamb grilled with a mint, rosemary sauce-Perfectly cooked and divine. The mint sauce paired with the lamb took away any gamey taste there could have been. The service here is good and the atmosphere is homey with a touch of class. There's indoor and outdoor seating here which I prefer but the negative to that are the flies that come abuzzing...not exactly fun trying to eat and batting flies away at the same time. Came here on a Sunday night - reservation was at 6pm. Despite reservation, we still had to wait a good 45 minutes to be seated. The reason that we were given was that the table before us was taking their time with dessert (followed by "they're taking their time to pay the bill.") Despite the packed restaurant and the horrible wait, the food was good. My boyfriend and I shared the special of the night, a bbq combo plate that had cole slaw, fries, beef ribs and chicken. Good deal! The ribs were excellent, as were the fries and the cole slaw. The chicken's skin was a little too salty (over-seasoned) but the actual meat was very tender. The portions are all very good. Wanted to note that they also forgot an order of cornbread and only brought it out after we reminded them at the end of the meal; it was near impossible to get the servers' attention. Tried the skillet cornbread that a friend ordered - man was it moist! I think it had jalapeños in it and definitely had some corn. Smelled and tasted great. Definitely a must if you're a big savory cornbread fan. Their cornbread is more on the moist, cake-y side. Service was slow and not so great; near impossible to get someone's attention. There was understandably an 18% included gratuity for our group of 8 so couldn't really show our unhappiness through tip. Minus a star for service. read more

Anyway place where you hear "I'm getting married!!! AHhhhhwooowhoooanaahhhH!!!" is not a fine dining establishment in my eyes. Although I knew that this was a more of a "locals" place, I was expecting more. The place completely packed, load and rowdy. We could barely get to the front of the restaurant after entering from the back where the parking lot was. We were there Xmas weekend, not a busy time of year, and there was no where to stand, my poor bf nearly got smacked in the face with the door every time someone walked in. We were seated within 5 min of our reservations which was a plus, the walk ins weren't so lucky, I noticed one couple waited about 45 minutes. The service throughout the dinner was good but what was strange is that we must have had 6 different people waiting on us, it was just a little weird. As for the food, my bf and I shared a Caesar salad which was big enough to do so but it was very average. I ordered the filet (med rare) with red cabbage with goat cheese and mashed potatoes. The filet was pretty big and cooked correctly; it was good but only slightly above average. The red cabbage with goat cheese was actually pretty tasty but even the mashed potatoes, which are hard to screw up, weren't very good. My bf ordered the New York steak med rare and complained that it was too rare. He only had mashed potatoes on the side. We both agreed that the steaks were good but for a bit more money we would have gone to Coles, which has been outstanding every time. For 1 salad, 2 entrees and 2 average cost glasses of wine we walked out of there for $125. And one more thing I just remembered, we also didn't get any bread when we first sat down. With so many outstanding options in the Napa Valley you shouldn't have to put up with anything less than excellent, we won't be coming back. read more

I started hearing rave reviews about this place from my boyfriend within the first week of meeting him, so the expectations were extremely high when we finally went together. And it definitely did not disappoint! He refuses to order anything but the ribs (although he admits everything else is great too...just not *as* great), and he has good reason because they are amazing. The rotisserie chicken is also good, very moist and I especially liked the peppery skin. But as someone who isn't the biggest meat-lover, the highlight for me was the appetizers! Grilled artichokes have never tasted so good, and I am determined to try and replicate their amazing cornbread! Everything was delicious. To top it all off, our server was fantastic: attentive, entertaining, and even remembered to send us off with a few extra bones for the dog :) Much to his delight, the moral of this story is: Boyfriend knows best. read more

Very bad service . No outdoor seating. We reached before our reservation time and we weren't seated for almost 15 minutes after the time we had reserved the table for. that means we waited almost 30 minutes after we checked in with the host. She said she acknowledged that we are there and that we may wait out and we may order appetizers outside. No one brought us menus for it. We got tired of waiting and there were people already waiting who hadn't been seated yet. We figured there was no point of having reserved the table and we left. I came here with my family on July 4th after a long day of wine tasting. To my surprise we were actually seated right away, it wasn't very busy at all even though it was a holiday! The service is so awesome. Our server was attentive, but wasn't to prying (I hate it when servers come and sit down with you at the table while you order!) Now, let's get to the food, because...OH MY HEAVEN. I ordered the french dip with fries, and it was pretty good. But my boyfriend ordered the ribs with coleslaw and fries....DELICIOUS. This was SERIOUSLY the best ribs I have ever had. It was fall off the bone, juicy, tender, sweet....my mouth is just watering thinking about it! The coleslaw was different from your typical coleslaw. I don't know if it's because I love cilantro, but the coleslaw was so yummy! A bit expensive but nothing to crazy. I wasn't surprised because this is in Napa. I can't wait to come back here. I was up in wine country last weekend for a friend's birthday and we were lucky enough to be graced by some of the best weather I've seen in MONTHS! Needless to say, we decided to sit outside with our group of 10 people and soak up as much Vitamin K as possible. I had the blackened fish sandwich (OK) but the highlights of the meal were without a doubt the cornbread, their grilled artichoke, and the RIBS! Honestly, the only thing that keeps me from giving the restaurant a higher rating was the service. When we could actually find our server, he was amazing! He was friendly, knowledgeable, and even attentive. Unfortunately, I found that it easier to find Waldo in those Where's Waldo books after a couple drinks then I ever did finding our server. I was recommended by our winery tour guide at Hendry to eat here while on a recent trip to the Valley. It was spectacular! The atmosphere was great. Dimly lit, rich wood tones, cozy booths, all of which made it feel very welcoming and almost nostalgic, like an homage to traditional comfortable American dining of a time gone by. My wife and I had a difficult time deciding what to order but went on the great recommendations of the waiter. To start we had the cornbread and it was sublime! Coming from the South, we know our cornbread and this was top shelf. I then had the ribs, which again beat anything I can find in the BBQ rich South. My wife had a perfect steak. Rutherford Grill was recommended to us after our wine tour at Robert Mondavi. It was recommended as a casual place where local winemakers go for lunch. It was really tasty. I wanted the Cesar shrimp salad but they were out of it. Our waiter recommended the kale chicken salad and it was an amazing substitute! The chicken was super tender and the dressing didn't overpower the salad. My boyfriend got the French dip and he loved it. The meat was high quality and the bun complemented the sandwhich but wasn't the star of the show. I also got a glass of the Round Pond Sauvignon Blanc and he got a Riesling. We were in and out of there in 45 minutes. Great service and food. Two entrees and 2 glasses of wine put us at $80. read more

I'm typically not a fan of "chain" restaurants but the exception to that are any of the Hillstone Restaurants (Houston's, Bandera, Gulfstream, etc.). The service and quality of food is always top-notch but the Rutherford Grill is the creme de la creme of the Hillstone properties. Make sure you order their smoked BBQ ribs. It's my favorite dish on the menu! As with all the Hillstone restaurants, they don't charge corkage - so it's a great place to dine if you want to try one of those bottles of wine you just purchased after going wine tasting! This is as good as it gets - great patio, great bar, great dining room, great service, great menu, great food, great wine list. It is also the only place that pops into my mind when I want a margarita as well. You can never, ever, ever go wrong with Rutherford Grill. Saturday lunch on the patio is only rivaled by Bistro Don Giovanni, but absolutely one of the two best places in the valley for it! If I had to complain about something, I would say serve the bleu cheese potato chips all year long. What is seasonal about that dish? Not only would I go there more often, but I would bet that serving that dish on a regular basis would boost some red wine sales. (I would run a special all summer long pairing it with a three year old, chilled, cru Beaujolais.) They say it is a winter only item, but no matter when you go you should ask for it, just to let them know you want it real bad. read more

Great atmosphere, good wine selection, and fresh greens. yum. i ordered the pork ribs and sashimi salad the ribs were pretty good, but not THE best i've ever had. my bf thinks they were a tad dry, i personally thought they were pretty awesome bc it feel off the bone as i was trying to separate them out. I do agree with him that the best BBQ in the napa valley is hands down Bounty Hunter Wine Bar (their wines arn't that great though...i guess you can't have it all) Bottom line, we'll be back for more in the future. Truly one of our favorite restaurants. We get to enjoy at least 4x a year. I know, we are very lucky. And so it's with that degree of experience with the restaurant as well as sadness and major disappointment with Rutherford Grill that I register this major complaint with their recent changes. Those of you who love this restaurant and their stalwart favorite dishes beware: the corn bread, previously so deliciously and plentifully served in cast iron pans plentiful enough for the whole table, were then stripped down to tiny , single-serving cast iron pans ample enough only for one but so delicious that you could overlook the hefty price tag making them about double the cost of the original portion... are now served as Bites...as in 6 tiny pieces that appeared to be cut from not a cast iron pan of any sort but more like a glass baking dish. Gone are the silky deliciousness and crispness of the edges of the cornbread that were an indicative signature of Rutherford Grill. Such a bummer. It may seem silly to be so upset about this but if you love their corn bread as much as we do, you understand completely. RIP Rutherford Grill cornbread. We may eventually be back, but we won't order that again. read more

I've eaten at this restaurant many times, as it is my sister-in-laws' favorite place to eat when we go to Napa. My experiences have been mostly good, and the food is well prepared, but I can tell you- some things are better than others. My favorites are the enchiladas (no kidding), the grilled artichoke, the slaw and the corn bread. I've had lamb there that was excellent too. I think the food is kind of heavy and homey, but interesting and well seasoned. The place is always crowded, so they must appeal to most of us. If you are looking for highly refined, cutting edge food, keep going; if you just want a satisfying meal, this is the place. read more

We keep coming back to this restaurant because we love their food. The food has great flavor and the staff is very friendly. I love to sit out in the patio and sip a glass of wine. I was excited to hear it's a Hillstone restaurant and I think the hype set expectations fairly high. The restaurant was bustling and the wait time (without reservations) was an average of 20-30 minutes. We were able to snag a spot at the bar and ordered from the food menu there. I had the BBQ Pork Ribs with Coleslaw and French Fries. The ribs just fell right off the bone! I thought they could be more moist... which i suppose wasn't as obvious with the slathering of bbq sauce. Not a huge fan of coleslaw and i still ate a little. It's creamy! They serve thinly cut french fries :) They do deserve 5 stars specifically for their Iron Skillet Cornbread though! I always reach for butter and honey when eating cornbread but theirs needed neither. It was buttery all on its own, with a hint of cheese, jalapeno, and the right amount of sweet. I can't confirm whether any of those are actual ingredients of the side dish but i know i'd come back just for this! No Corkage Fee :) read more
