Somewhat of a franchise, I've found, but so what. We order their cornbread every time we go (we're wine club members just down the road), and take most of it home, but that's just fine. It's excellent for several days. What makes it so good? it's moist. It has actual bits of corn in it, and it has just a hint of jalapeno ... not enough to make it hot, but enough to get the flavor in there. Everyone says their French dip sandwich is the best ever, and I agree, although it's a bit pricey. I also really like their kale salad with peanut dressing. It is a very busy restaurant, so unless you're going at off hours (middle of the afternoon) it is probably a good idea to make a reservation. One thing that is fun about it is seeing a whole group of vintners in the big booth sharing multiple bottles of their wine. But sometimes a like a beer, and although they've got a small tap selection, they do have Anchor Lager ... enough for me. read more

Hillstone is by far my favorite restaurant group. Consistent. Gorgeous dishes. Anywhere I travel I manage to find the closest Hillstone restaurant and share a meal among friends. I'm an ambassador of Hillstone for life. In addition, their quality of service and training of their staff is unmatched. I always sit at the bar - my favorite. On this trip, there was a particular bartender with a long dark ponytail who was less than satisfactory. She stood with her back to us, crossed arms, and gossiped the entire time to the male bartender who was wonderful and attempted to dodge her unprofessional communication about her life and waitstaff during service. While the food was a 5 star, the experience was a 4 star because she was taking so loud I could hear everything that she said about her personal life over my meal. Will be back but hopefully she won't kill the vibe. The money spent wasn't worth it due to her vibe. read more

We had no idea what a fun stop this would be. Even at 2pm Thursday the place was buzzing and full on the patio. Seated inside we weren't unhappy at all. Kristin was attentive and fun. French Dip was delish according to my fussy companion. Fish Fry was tasty but so-so. We had the house-made Oreo and ice cream dessert with espresso chocolate sauce! I heard many things about this restaurant since I moved to California and Sunday, my wife and I decided to see what the hype was about and this place didn't disappoint at all. The greeter was super nice and my waitress, Krystal, was amazing. She was attentive, funny, and she made us feel super comfortable. The food was incredible as well. Very lovely bbq restaurant. I went here after a wine tasting and it definitely hit the spot. I think the prices were a little steep but that's normal for the area I guess. I ordered the cornbread and baby back ribs for two people and it was the perfect amount of food. We actually had a little cornbread left. The cornbread was made with some jalapeños so it was a little spicy but interesting. The baby back ribs were delicious. I could eat it with a fork and knife literally. The meat was falling off the bone. It was pretty darn good. I would recommend this place to someone looking for some good bbq food. read more

This place loses a star because of the wait time. Not because they have it, but because they underestimated. With a 45 min wait at 3:45, you start to get impatient after 4:35... However, the wait was definitely worth it. The corn bread and deviled eggs are amazing, as is the FRENCH DIP. The most tender meat and the softest bread. To die for. The service was really good, too. So I've heard if this place and saw a long line but I was in the area after an estate sale and was in a real good mood so I stopped and had a late lunch. This place was over-the-top with its food. This used to be my favorite place. In all of Napa Valley. I travel about 75% of the time for work and I am a foodie fiend. Rutherford Grill is always my top recommendation for anyone traveling through the area. The artichokes. The prime rib sandwich. And most extraordinary of all... the prime rib! So, why they took it off the menu, is beyond me? I was so disappointed when I arrived there last week; mouthwatering--drool running down my face--just waiting for that first bite of their delicious prime rib. I even brought a friend with me, promising the best prime rib he had ever eaten. I don't even know how to describe the let-down I felt when the waitress told us they were no longer serving prime rib. I still enjoyed the prime rib sandwich and the worlds best artichokes, but I feel inclined to only give this place a two star recommendation now simply due to my overwhelming disappointment. If they bring the prime rib back, I'll bump it back up to five stars, but in the meantime, I don't think Rutherford Grill will be first on my list when I make my monthly trip through Napa. Shame on the person(s) who made the decision to remove this from the menu. read more

Fanatastic food & service! Came here our first night in Rutherford, loved it so much we made reservations for the next night while still eating dinner the first night! Chips/guacamole & spinach cheese dip for appetizers were delicious. For dinner we had the fillet also delicious. Second night shrimp Caesar salad was very good, the dressing was amazing. Cheeseburger cooked exactly how my husband ordered it. I had the Ahi Tuna platter, oh my!!!! Amazing is all I can say! Highly recommend! My husband and I are longtime clients of Rutherford Grill. We have a number of favorites: the grilled artichoke, the sweet and spicy cornbread, the house-smoked salmon, and the generous pour of a chilled Sauvignon blanc. One super-favorite dish for many years has been the Chicken Salad, a tasty combination of lettuce, vegetables, and killer dressing. I am SO disappointed that now the item is called "Kale & Rotisserie Chicken Salad" and the other two salads on the menu also feature kale. Even "Classic" Caesar Salad. Yuck! I just don't see the point of changing a tried and true recipe and giving clients no alternative to kale. Please restore the old recipes and drop this kale fetish! read more

But 7 out of 8 of were fighting for the bathroom after ... thinking there may have been some cross contamination in the kitchen since we didn't eat any of the same things. We've eaten at the Rutherford Grill for over twenty years. It was by far our favorite restaurant in the Napa Valley. We would eat there probably 6 or 8 times a year for various occasions and became very accustomed to the menu. Like any restaurant the more you go there the more you become familiar with menu, staff and service. So the menu has changed over the years and not in a good way. What seemed to be the go to items have disappeared to be replaced with entries that were less appealing and as usual the quantities went down and the price has gone up. The service is always excellent albeit the atmosphere is always on the loud side, so not where you would go for a romantic meal. I'm pretty tough on food service because when you spend the amounts they're asking, $22 for a sandwich for example, I don't expect to leave hungry. Lastly we shared our last dining experience there with friends and relayed that we weren't able to order a certain item because it no longer was on the menu and their response was "oh yeah they still have it, it's just not on the menu anymore you have to ask for it." If you're still serving it then put it on the menu so people know it's still available. I don't think that's too much to ask for. All in all I think we're done with the Grill and it's too bad it was a fantastic place to go and eat. read more

This is and will forever be one of my favorite restaurants...I know it's part of a chain and oh, if only every chain could be this good and "un-chain" like. Let's hit the highlights: I have never, NEVER, had a bad meal here or regretted what I ordered (if anything I make a mental note of what to try next time). The bartenders are amazing, very attentive and the drinks prove it. No corkage fee, which is a plus after acquiring bottles from previous wine tasting (if applicable). I won't go into too much detail on the food because you can't go wrong. But the wait can be a problem, especially if you're a little tipsy from wine tasting. Definitely scope out the bar. I was lucky enough to grab a spot one night while waiting for a table and ended up eating there because the bartender was that good. On a nice day though take advantage of the outside. Bring a bottle of wine or make friends with the outside bartender....by my second trip he had my order memorized (three drinks all different) (not all for myself of course) so I got to make eye contact then wait for the drinks to magically appear. Bottom line: get ready to spend some time but well worth the wait and being wine country there is always good people watching....all mentioned in previous posts and couldn't be said better here read more

Well, what can I say? The food is delicious. I always get the cornbread as an appetizer (which you will probably need if you come for dinner as the wait can really work up your appetite). Perfect after a day of wine-tasting...even more perfect when the weather's nice and you can sit outside (and yes, it's dog friendly...my mom likes to bring her dog and the waitstaff always obliges when she asks if they have any bones for the pup to gnaw on). Minus one star only because the dinner wait can be a little outrageous...but hey, it's a popular place, and the quality and price make it worth the wait (esp. when compared to the price of other "nice" restaurants in the area). Rutherford Grill has one of the friendliest and well educated staffs you'll find in the Napa Valley. Ask your server anything you want about the dish your ordering, they're trained to know how each dish is prepared and all of its components. Our server was an exceedingly nice young woman who was so enthusiastic about her job it heightened the experience for everyone at the table (we had two out-of-towners with us). I had the Ostrich, it was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing! The Ostrich came with a side of mashed potatoes and some red cabbage...the potatoes were excellent but the cabbage really lacked flavor. I haven't been to the grill in at least a year and a half. I was not disappointed upon my return. We arrived on a Sunday after champagne tasting and even though it was packed at the 5 o'clock hour we got a table inside within 30 minutes. Where to start? I've been to this restaurant a handful of times and have never been disappointed with the overall dining experience. The food is phenomenal and always seems fresh. The service is always on point and never lacking, even on its busiest nights. This is a local favorite and I can see why. My last visit was on Father's Day eve with my fiancee. There was a bit of a wait so we headed for the outside bar to pass the time. Once seated, we received prompt attention and ordered our meals. We shared the seared Ahi tuna salad that was incredible not only in taste but in presentation. I opted to go with my regular choice, the cheeseburger. Once again, it was cooked to perfection. One of my favorite burgers! My fiancee ordered the french dip sandwich and substituted the fries for an order of their mashed potatoes (one of her favorites). The sandwich was tender and the au jus was flavorful. I would have given this restaurant 5 stars; however, they do not take reservations that I believe would alleviate the long waits we've experience almost every visit. All in all, great restaurant! Dear Lord this is one of my favorite restaurants. The best Prime Rib French Dip I've ever eaten. This restaurant is casual, quality food and good service. Whenever we are in the area it's our go to place. We go around three in the afternoon and have the Prime Rib French Dip and then that evening instead of a heavy dinner we have a cheese plate and wine. The Rutherford Grill can get extremely busy but at least it's a restaurant that is worth the wait. But with the time frame we choose to go there is not a wait, we walk right in. I have never had bad service here. It's always top notch. I have never ordered anything here that wasn't quality. I can't recommend this place enough. One of the best restaurants to spend your hard earned money in. It's a challenge to be disappointed here. It meets all expectations of what going out to eat should be. read more

Not often do you have both a stupendous meal making a long and arduous drive well worth it, but you have some super service that makes you know you have come to an extraordinary place were customers really do come first. Three of Marin ladies trekked her for annual celebration of one of us b-day, and it was her choice, so no questions asked. We were late, quite late, but the hostess did her best not to keep us waiting and we were seated a lovely table where everything from the trademark corn bread, to the signature salads and nightly fish special were each noteworthy in of themselves. As we were concluding our meal, we all of sudden got spritzed big time by an over zealous table next door also celebrating a much younger b-day no doubt. The champagne uncorked released liquid spray that not only jumped the aisle but soaked two of our three just of the cleaner silk blouses. Hoping not to be pains in the asses, but thinking cleaning bills might be nice gesture, the manager came to our table. He was jovial and apologetic and before we could even decide whether our request was in line, he announced he had comped our WHOLE dinner, cocktails, wine and everything. No questions asked. We insisted on buying our desserts which we had decided no dieting girls were we tonight. He graciously said ok, but was willing to toss our 2 for 3 to die for desserts in the gratis deal as well. This is our go-to spot for all things delicious and predictable (in a good way). It's everything a Grill should be. Great apps, entrees, and desserts. Our group of friends love to share several apps (grilled artichokes, smoked salmon, queso dip, jalapeño cornbread, etc.). Some of us like the lighter options (Kale salad, Chicken Caesar, fish sandwich), while others are into the perfectly cooked meat (prime french dip, ribs, burger, prime rib). There's something for everyone here, including the kiddos. The big comfortable booths are great for a group of four. But if its available, I suggest staking out a seat at the bar, especially when the wait for a table is often an hour plus. They're friendly and attentive- always. The wine list is VERY affordable. FREE corkage is awesome. But if you bring a bottle, buy a round of drinks or a starter bottle. It's the right thing to do people. My only complaint is the lack of friendliness from the hostesses. They're always rude and pretentious! I know its a busy place and the wait can be long- but please, be decent to the people who want to pay to eat and drink. It's a local favorite and its a great spot for tourists wine tasting in the rutherford region. Every out-of-town friend we bring looks for their local version of this restaurant.
