On a quiet night in Napa Valley, two dreary travelers sought to have a meal worthy of life's trials and tribulations. The somellier at the winery we were getting progressively drunk at recommended Rutherford Grill for a no-frills high-quality dinner. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and effortlessly goes with the natural beauty of the scenery surrounding the rolling Hills and vineyards in this area. This is a large restaurant with very good ambience, absolutely buzzing with patrons. We were hungry, so opted to sit at the bar, our bartender was friendly and kept the wine flowing. We knew we were in for a treat as soon as we set foot in the establishment. To begin, we ordered the stuffed jalapeños. Delicious, and very spicy, so proceed at your own risk. We had heard high praise for the French dip sandwich, and this did not disappoint. I oddly did like the simple flavors of this dish that were enhanced by the Au jus served on the side. Beef was moist, salty, and the bread was pillowy and just beautiful. The Napa cabbage salad was to die for. Everything from the textures to the amount of chicken to the little bits and pieces in the salad were an absolute joy. To finish, we ordered the Oreo dessert. Texture heaven. Crisp biscuit, warm chocolate sauce, ice cream. This was a meal to remember. If you are in Napa Valley, just come here. You will not be disappointed. read more

Rutherford Grill is my go-to. Pre covid, post covid, it is and always has been on my list. Everything is excellent here. Food, service, ambiance. All of it. One of my favorite meals is the local sausages with a BBQ chicken thigh and their coleslaw. It never changes and is always perfection. The sausages are lovely. Savory, but not too salty or sweet. The chicken thigh is obviously smoky and has BBQ sauce, but it's juicy and a bit fatty. Satisfying. And the coleslaw is a staple at Rutherford Grill. Unique to them with tangy honey mustard sauce that is just right. As you can imagine, I almost always order this dish and look forward to it. Hubs ordered the fish sandwich this time and LOVED it. Rutherford Grill is solid and has been for over 2 decades. This is one place that I enjoy their ribs and steaks. I know that I am dating myself but the Hawaiian Rib Eye is the shit, if I do say so myself. Of course with it being in the wine county, Rutherford to be exact; the wine served is unpretentious with a full spectrum of offerings. If you're looking for meat and potatoes, this is it. Everything about this restaurant was amazing. The food was super delicious and the service was so fantastic. I had asked for a glass of water for my beverage with my meal. At first, when I received the small glass of water I was already mentally preparing myself to ask for constant refills. Much to my surprise I never asked for a refill and my glass was constantly filled to the top over and over again. The service was so fast from sitting down to out the door only took 40 minutes. We had started with the spinach and artichoke dip and this was so flavorful including the red salsa. I had ordered red trout and I have to say this was the best fish I've ever had in a very long time. Coleslaw was homemade and so delicious. No matter which Hillstone restaurant I go to in whatever city the food is consistently excellent. Rutherford Grill is no exception to this rule. Their menu features the famous Houston's Veggie Burger which never disappoints. This has been and still is THE BEST veg burg I ever tasted since my first bite over 25 years ago (@ Houston's, now Hillstone in San Francisco). Ambiance is cozy with deep dark woods and warm yellow lighting. Service is excellent - attentive and friendly. Open kitchen rounds out the lively vibe as tables filled up around us. We arrived when they opened for lunch at 11:30 on a Friday with a reservation. We were seated promptly. Of course they have a great wine list and a full bar. But sadly they don't offer espresso martinis. Same story in SF. Aside from that, the menu is standard Hillstone with something for everyone - salads, burgers, hot sandwiches, deviled eggs, steaks, veggie sides, a grilled artichoke, and just read they still don't have a corkage fee! Visiting Napa and decided to have dinner here based on the great reviews. So disappointed with the entire experience. My husband ordered the ribs and I ordered the combo chicken and ribs. We also ordered some drinks to start. I ordered a dirty martini. It was the saddest martini I have ever had. I asked our server for extra olive juice to see if that helped but it did not. My chicken was juicy and the brocolini was good however the ribs and cole slaw left much to be desired. The fries were ok. Equally awful was the sevice. Our server was not rude but she was indifferent and after getting our dinners she never checked on us once. When she finally did and we mentioned the drink not being the best, all we got was oh im sorry. Same response from another employee (not sure if that was the manager). The food was comparable to a chili's or TGIF and the service was non existent from the 3 ladies we encountered. I would imagine there are better establishments to eat in this area. read more

Friendly staff and accommodating server. She graciously answered questions (having to repeat herself) when one of my friends asked her about menu items. I grew up in the Bay Area, and dining at Los Altos Grill (formerly Bandera) was a family staple! I haven't lived there in quite some time, but think back often to the grilled artichokes, the skillet cornbread, and the prime rib French Dip sandwich. When we found ourselves in Napa last week, a stop at Rutherford Grill -- another Hillstone Restaurant -- was a must. We made a reservation in advance, and were greeted/seated promptly. The vibe was very similar to Los Altos Grill: dim lighting, big bar in the center of the restaurant, large leather booths, etc. The food was, as expected, delicious. The cornbread is no longer served in a skillet, and instead is 5-6 small cubes of cornbread in a bowl. The prime rib French Dip was just as I remember: tender, savory, and elevated with that creamy horseradish! If I'm being picky -- and I feel like patrons should be, especially at establishments that are picky with their guests (we see you, Hillstone "Attire Standards and Dining Guidelines" lol) -- our server was quiet and had a very cold demeanor. I'm not sure if this was just her personality or a directive from management to their staff in how to interact with guests. Professionalism is one thing, but the lack of any kind of emotion was off-putting and inhospitable. The other miss was that I ordered a glass of Merlot, and it never arrived to our table. The appetizer arrived... then our dinner arrived... at which point I realized the wine had likely been forgotten. I didn't want to slam a glass of wine after we had already started eating our entrees, so I didn't say anything... but I noticed and was disappointed. Overall, the food was good and the experience scratched the itch of "Memory Lane" for me. But Napa wasn't really the vibe for us, and we likely won't seek out another Hillstone Restaurant elsewhere. I guess I prefer a different flavor of hospitality, and that's ok. read more

At least worthy of 5 stars. They do a lot of things right. First off, I like the intimate nature of their restaurant. I wish they could keep to their intentions of smaller groups. The larger groups are so loud. Also wish they kept children out because crying and loud devices are so distracting to this who are on a date and would like peace. Those things aside, Rutherford Grill is outstanding. The service is attentive and very informative. We asked for a wine recommendation and were told much more about the wine than standard servers suggest at other restaurants. Love it. The food is incredible. We had the grilled artichokes. If you have an opportunity to try this, it is amazing. My husband had chicken and sausage. It was cooked perfectly and was delicious. I had the pork chop special of the night. It was served beautifully. The mashed potatoes on the side were so good. I also loved the cabbage with goat cheese. Restaurants all have a large bar area in the middle with tables up and around bar - uniquely screwed into the floor so you will never have a problem with a wobbly table. Details folks. Rutherford is either the brother or the sister to R&D. I've had many good meals at R&D and lately some not so good. Rutherford is a real treat. First let me say something about prices-- if I didn't know better I'd say these were pre Covid prices: enchiladas $22. Martini $16 ( very large Grey Goose-$20 everywhere else) rotisserie chicken $26. It's $39 at Los Altos grill and R@D doesn't offer)--bbq ribs $39. Great and huge portions-prices are 30% more at R&D. Same owner. Go figure. Quality and service A1. Ask for Campbell. We are very disappointed we have been coming here for over 10 years and they would not seat 6 of us. The hostess was very rude. We noticed more than 7 people sitting in a large booth and there was an empty table with plenty of room for us. She was adamant that they don't seat more than five people in a booth. essentially calling me a liar. I am very disappointed with this place as we have been patrons for over 10 years.
