I don't know how this place has such low reviews. I've been twice now and the food has been amazing. Hot fresh, and never wrong. The person that takes the order is always friendly and lets me know what specials are running that day. The place is always well clean and the staff is always nice. Under new ownership, but keeping the same great recipes passed down. The history alone of this place is pretty remarkable. The original original location of las palapas many many years ago that burned down. The original owners opened another location down the road naming it las palapas THEN rebuilt and named this Ruthie's. Bottom line, traditional Tex-Mex from a San Antonio institution. My first visit was with a group of 6 people and we ordered a wide variety of menu items to include: chalupa compuesta (more on that later), tortilla soup, enchiladas verdes, Ruthie's Special plate, beef fajitas, a quesadilla with barbacoa, a torta, tres leches cake, wet burrito. Everyone in the group enjoyed their food. Everything was hot, fresh, made to order, and made right. The standout for me was the tostada (or chalupa compuesta) with shredded chicken! It was a DOUBLE DECKER! Hand fried corn tortillas with a layer of refried beans in the middle then topped with all the usual delicious toppings of a tostada. This was AMAZING though because this is my favorite Mexican food item and I have never ever had it that way before. Literally, life changing, having me question why I've never thought of doing that before? It was sturdy and held up all the delicious toppings alleviating the mess and usual need for a thousand napkins! It didn't fall apart. This is a cozy restaurant. The service was great and the owner even came out to check on the food. I'm a no nonsense eater. I just went for the beef enchilada plate. The enchilada was of a decent size and packed with real beef unlike other places with meat sauce. The beans and rice is pretty standard. I inhaled the whole plate. I felt bad that she was working alone but our order took like 30 minutes for 2 simple tacos and a fideo loco along with a chalupa. Let's start with the positive. They have a 100 score posted for food safety sanitation! They had the blue plate award next to it! Good job! I ordered the Carne Guisada breakfast taco and a bean and cheese. The food was OK. The tortillas could've been better. I'm not sure if they make them in house however they were lacking a little flavor. The coffee was OK. I didn't finish it. I like strong coffee so I guess it's just a matter of preference. It was a Monday morning. It was nice and quiet.... people started arriving a little bit after. I'm very particular about restrooms and usually determines if I'll go back. Their restrooms are located in a strange set up. Ladies room is right by the entrance in the dining area almost. While the food is delicious, the service is terrible. Been going for some time now. One gentlemen in specific is very welcoming and attentive. Even the cashier lady. Our waitress the last few times has been terrible. I asked to be seated with the gentlemen today but he said they were in a rotation and apparently it wasn't his time to take another table. To our luck we got served by the same lady. She seems grouch, she's inattentive, and doesn't seem to want to be there. Now let's talk about pricing, they have increased their prices dramatically. They charge $0.89 to add cheese to a taco; and $1.50 for a slice of bacon on a taco. A carne guisada taco is $3.89 + $0.89 from the cheese. So I'm paying close to $5 for a taco?? No thank you! While I've never eaten inside the restaurant, I've ordered takeout from here several times now and they've never disappointed. Nobody in my household has had a complaint about this place. From breakfast tacos like papa ranchera and chorizo con papa (I despise a greasy chorizo taco), to their enchiladas, and Chile relleno. Their Chile relleno is one of the best I've ever had and I've ordered it multiple times because it's so good. They have big, fresh homemade tortillas. Their salsa is good. Arrived about 10am on a weekday... ordered Huevos Rancheros plates... an order of CRISPY bacon... we STRESSED CRISPY.... only 2 or 3 tables occupied when we ordered (at least 1 already served...and we waited over 20 minutes for the food to be served after we ordered.... the eggs were cooked as ordered, but cold... the beans and potatoes were cold.. the bacon was a long ways from crispy... and, if you can imagine.. cold.. the service was fair.... The food was *okay* it's the same quality you would get at Las Palapas or Taco Cabana at best. The quality in terms of food AND service has gone down hill over the past year or so. I got my food to go so I can't speak on how the restaurant was, although I don't appreciate getting attitude when I ordered to go and saw an elderly woman go in to SIT AND EAT when the restaurant only had 10 minutes left of it being open. MENUDO. That's it. That's the review. Just kidding. I had a hankering for this traditional soup and I accidentally gave my sister my bag of my dad's menudo. The next best place for me to go that's not too far away? Ruthie's of course. The staff feels like it's run by people who could easily be my aunts and cousins. They're all very friendly and checked in on me often. I ordered a lemonade and a large menudo, and they gave me all the fixin's and two fluffy homemade flour tortillas. The menudo was special. Depending on your family, or the region, or even just some restaurants' preferences, you'll either get the honeycomb or the librillo tripe. They used both! Best of both worlds in one bowl. My bowl was absolutely delicious and I filled up on pancita and hominy before I could enjoy my tortillas, so I did what any self-disrespecting latina would do and rolled up the tortillas and stuffed them in my purse. No way I'm going to let them get thrown out. There will be no waste of any of that delicious food. Ruthie's is an absolute staple and outstanding family owned business that's been around for decades. They support local schools as well as our paramedics, Fire, and police. That being said, this place is the definition of consistent. Gigantic fluffy flour tortillas that hold massive amounts of whatever you choose. Whether it's carne guisada, chiliquiles, or just bacon and egg. Two tacos will fill up most grown men. The huevos rancheros is killer. Perfect eggs, soft potatoes, and the ranchera sauce is solid. I've been going for over decade, and I don't plan on stopping any time soon. Most importantly, the staff is truly kind and very good at what they do. I have been eating at Ruthies since the mid 80s when it was the original Las Palapas. The Acostas built the new LPs on Blanco and the Valencia family took over the building and called it Ruthies. These folks "mom" helped Las Palapas get started with recipes and you can still go in and see the family working the restaurant and Mrs. Valencia even rolling tortillas. They have the best flour and true homemade corn tortillas around. Yes, Covid impacted staff as it did at all restaurants. Yes, they back the blue and have tributes to fallen officers on the walls. You can get a Charger special two breakfast tacos and a drink for less than 5 bucks mon to fri til 930am to go which is a great deal and their tacos are much bigger than your typical taco house. I have nothing but good to say about this restaurant. Enchiladas are good! Daily lunch specials are excellent! Taco Norteno is the best but a monster so you can get a smaller version. California type burrito people ask the bosses or a family member and they will make it exactly as you like. Not sure about the sour grape reviews. They do about 3k tacos on a weekend and are super popular in the area and a staple for Churchill Charger families and alumni who have been going there for decades. This restaurant contributes to all the services and weekly you will see firetrucks and police cars eating there which speaks volumes and adds to the safety and reasons to support the families restaurant. I'll always be a patron. Can count my issues over the decades on one hand and they resolved it fast!!! Oh yeah Blue Plate Awards and voted by the Express News as Best Barbacoa in the city!!! Been coming here since 2012 since I moved to San Antonio! The food is excellent and has never stopped being excellent! I'm really sad because me and my husband used to live right next door and came here all the time for breakfast. Since we moved way across the city we don't get to come that often but make it a special treat every few months. The manager is super nice and he always remembers us even after all these years! Super personable and friendly staff too. Here's what you really need to know: get the potato a la mexicana tacos, they're vegan and delicious! Also make sure to get the chips and salsa and sweet tea!
