Ruth's is a very welcoming environment for a late breakfast or early lunch. The staff is extremely friendly and their food is amazing. While you wait you can enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee. My wife always orders the Florentine Benedict(they have several kinds) and you can't go wrong with any of the scrambles. The salads they offer are a hit and the champagne vinaigrette is a must have. Bit of a drive for us but once I found out they have cheesecake filled pancakes I had to try it out! They are located on the north side in a strip with plenty of parking. They actually have a ton of seating - the original storefront isn't immediately noticeable but has extended seating next to the entrance and the staff does a good job of seating everybody quickly even though they are PACKED on weekends. They also have outdoor tables. The decor is very kitschy and they have colorful tabletops which is a nice touch. I got the strawberry cheesecake pancakes and let me tell you these things are a BEAST - the size of dinner plates and while 2 pancakes may not seem like a lot when you're hungry I guarantee you won't be able to eat more than a quarter or half. I wish there was more cheesecake inside but it was definitely worth trying. I will say because of the size it can get a tad try so don't be afraid to pour a ton of syrup over them - they have many to choose from. Their orange juice is fresh squeezed, and reasonably priced. Okay so you know those strip malls that you typically overlook because it looks like a strip mall with chain restaurants? Yeah, this place kind of looks like it on the outside, but the inside is so warm and full of happiness and quirky sayings and decorations. I had brunch here today and wow, I felt like I was in a movie and I was (somehow) gracefully eating one of the best skillets I have ever had in my life. There's a big 'ole chalkboard, so you know they are making changes to the menu on the regular which I love because you can try something new every time. Everything inside this place makes me want to redo the decor of my own place and then redo it again. I love it, and I cannot wait to go back. I'm always a little skeptical of restaurants in strip malls (for better or worse) but this place surprised me on the first visit and have been back multiple times. Everything is reasonably priced and has always been tasty. I love that I can get a salmon omelet for less than $11. There's a bit of a wait on weekends but it turns over fast. The menu is fairly large and there are quiche and scramble specials daily. The service has always been fast and friendly. My wife has been to Ruth's several times for brunch with girlfriends, but until today I never capitalized on the opportunity to enjoy a delicious, low cost breakfast just 3 minutes from my apartment. My wife loves eggs Benedict, and always gets one here. She's had them several places around Indy, and always claims Ruth's to be the best. The reason I've never been until now? I hate eggs Benedict. Well, to be clear, I hate hollandaise. But, my parents wanted to do brunch near my apartment, so we did. Walked in at 10am to a full restaurant and a 15 minute wait for our party of 4. Seated in less than 15 minutes, no problem. As soon as we were ready we put our order in. To my delightful surprise, they have "huge pancakes" on the menu. I asked the waitress if they were big enough for me to only get one. She told me they are the size of a frisbee, so I went with one for $3. I requested a poached egg and a side of bacon. The waitress then offered something amazing: would I like them to mix bacon into my pancake batter and top it with additional bacon? Are you kidding? Please, do so. What I received was nothing short of amazing. I didn't even get charged to add the bacon, which was plentiful throughout the gigantic pancake. So for a coffee (which was filled an average amount of times), an egg, and a huge bacon pancake I shelled out less than $10 for my meal, with my portion of the tip. I'll definitely return over and over again. I'd like to say I'll try some lunch items and some of the daily scrambles, but I'll be honest, I'm going straight for that pancake every time I walk in those doors. read more

I didn't expect a full house on a Monday morning at 10:15. However, every table was taken with one single seat left at a small counter. The resturant has two sides with a doorway between dining rooms. Another patron informed me the place use to be smaller noting only one dining room. Very much a family oriented resturant with artsy tables, chairs, sculptural salt & pepper stands, and small collections of tchotcke wall decor. The server, Shawn, warmly greeted us and answered menu questions. My very large portion coffee cup remained topped off for the entire visit. Even a to-go cup accompanied my carryout bag. Shawn scoring a 10 already. The half order of biscuits and gravy ($6) is a huge portion balancing the perfect amount of sausage to the gravy and biscuits. No skimping on sausage or gravy. The Spinach Omelette ($9.75) was delicious with large amounts of sautéed spinach, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes and feta cheese. Served with potatoes similar to oven roasted skin on red potatoes and a salad or fruit. Both meals could easily be split and we'd leave completely satisfied. Excellent service, delicious and afforable food using quality ingredients in a casual atmosphere with an eclectic decor. We'll certainly be back next time I'm in the area to sample other items from their large menu. read more

I feel like a real moron. I've lived here for nearly 8 years and just tried this place today. Yes, it is up on East 86th St by the Fashion Mall. BUT IT IS TOTALLY WORTH THE DRIVE! I went in thinking I'd be entering a fairly nondescript strip mall restaurant. Ummm...IT'S ADORABLE! The chairs are all decoupaged in a unique way. I ate lunch sitting on Superman and Batman...my chair was covered in comic book characters! Another was covered in sheet music. One of the highchairs was decorated with Doctor Suess images. LOVE IT! I started looking at the menu. I COULD NOT DECIDE! Everything sounded awesome. Biscuits and gravy, 8 kinds of benedicts, omelets, scrambles, sandwiches, Norwegian foods, CHEESECAKE PANCAKES!!! I felt like I was in Chicago or San Francisco. Seriously. I debated for awhile and settled on the scramble du jour: eggs, spinach, mushrooms, feta, and red pesto (I had them leave out the leeks and tomatoes). It was so flavorful...seriously. Fluffy eggs, huge portion, plenty of spinach and feta, and the pesto gave it such a fantastic savory taste! Scrambles come with your choice of toast and either fruit or a salad. My total was just over $10 including tax. Great deal for a really tasty, nutritious lunch. The jelly appeared to be homemade because it was in a souffle cup. WHAT?? Who does that? Ruths. Are you kind of a picky eater? You can "make your own" with pretty much everything. If you don't like their omelets or scrambles, you can create one yourself. All sorts of combos to choose from involving sandwiches, soups, salads, and sides. Nice menu of teas too, and there's GF bread. I went back the next day for lunch and had the caprese sandwich with tomato basil soup. I could eat the soup every day...it was awesome. The sandwich was really good too but the basil was...large. It was like they'd just pulled up a plant and shoved it between some fresh mozzarella. Just the leaves please, no stems needed. It was raw so the stems were a bit of an issue because the whole stalk kept sliding out. Not a graceful sandwich to consume. Loved the homemade croutons that come with the soup! This place has changed names several times. It used to be "Ruth's Keystone Cafe" and I read something calling it "Ruth's Pull-Up-A-Chair Cafe" and now everything says "Ruth's Cafe". Have you ever been inside one of those kitschy-styled novelty/home interior type gift shops where you can find offbeat goods and homespun signs with fun sayings? That's the experience of Ruth's Cafe, a sort of homespun meets pop culture meets hippie-styled breakfast/lunch diner near Keystone at the Crossing in the strip center across the street and on the opposite end where First Watch resides. A popular spot, Ruth's Cafe seems to appeal to the middle-to-upper income folks looking for a reasonably healthy option for the family. Most of the kitschy signs on the wall are for sale, a fact that makes me think that Ruth's Cafe is a little bit like Cracker Barrel on crack. I was able to snag one of the strip center's ADA compliant parking spots, somewhat surprising given Ruth's popularity. By about 30 minutes after I arrived, they had a 15-25 minute wait list. As I arrived, I was told it would be about a five minute wait - definitely reasonable by Ruth's standards from what I'd heard in advance. I saw a 4-top and a 2-top seated before me, though they'd arrived at me, and I quickly caught on (and they later acknowledged) they were waiting on a spot that was "easier" for me (ie, actually easier for them). I was seated at a two-top directly behind the hosting area that, in fact, friends of mine had just vacated. It made some sense in terms of moving around space, though it was a tad claustrophobic and led to more than a little sensory overload due to being right next to all the hosting area conversations. I also sat facing a mirror - while I'm not quite Quasimodo, though I do have scoliosis (bonus points if you get that joke!), I have to admit I wasn't thrilled facing myself for an entire meal. While I was prepared for the initial wait, I'll admit I wasn't prepared for how much I would wait. Once I was at my table, it was a few minutes until my drink order was taken. It was a few more minutes until my drink arrived. It was a few more minutes until my food order was taken. It was a little while until my food arrived. One refill came fairly timely, but multiple times it seemed like I was waiting several extra minutes including when I was offered a drink to go (awesome!) and waiting on the check then waiting on the check to be returned. My server, whom I won't name given this isn't exactly a rave review, was friendly but seemed like she was constantly in a rush. I think part of it was the lack of standing space by the table given that I was next to the hosting area, but it was a weird combo - the service felt very rushed despite the fact that I was constantly waiting. I have no idea if all the servers do this, but mine went by a pop culture name on the receipt (in this case, a cinematic reference). While this is kind of cute, I also thought it went along with the sort of impersonal feeling I got from the experience. I ordered french toast with a side of bacon along with my usual iced tea. The french toast was made with brioche bread and a hint of powered sugar. It was light, very fluffy and so tender you barely had to use a fork to take a bite. The side of bacon was fine, though nothing close to a stand-out and definitely not worth the $3.50 charge for three modest slices. The iced tea was good and I did get my always desired refills.The entire meal came in at just under $15 - a tad high that I would consider a modest value. Ruth's Cafe wasn't a bad experience, but I'll admit I had higher expectations. In a way, it felt like a fancier version of Broad Ripple's Biscuits, a kitschy and cluttered environment with decent food and decent yet unremarkable service. Having recently tried the nearby First Watch, a national chain with an emphasis on personal service, there's no question I prefer First Watch - the same meal is $4-5 less expensive and just as tasty with an incredibly superior atmosphere and, for the most part, a more relaxing and personal service experience. Ruth's does get kudos for their outside dining area, which remains uncluttered and easily accessible, and also offers catering, delivery and other options along with another nearby location they call Baby Ruth's. While I don't foresee myself returning unless a friend requests it, Ruth's is obviously popular and remains a solid breakfast/lunch spot and, hey, you can even pick yourself up some wall art while you're there. read more

Unfortunately, my first visit to Ruth's left me with mixed feelings. Some friends and I stopped in for Brunch this past Saturday. When I arrived around 10:50 a.m. the parking lot was packed. Between the crowd at Ruth's and First Watch, parking spots were minimal. Anyhoo, found my spot and was on my way. I heard wonderful things about Ruth's and was excited to try their famous cheesecake pancakes! Fortunately, one friend arrived around 10:45 and had already submitted our name to the hostess who told her it would be about a 25 minute wait. Ok, no problem. We had a total of 6 people in our party including 2 children under the age of 7. So we wait. 11:15 arrives. Nope, still waiting . 11:30 rolls around. We are still waiting. 11:40 rolls around. Still waiting. Huh? What's is going on? What irritated us the most is (1) when my friend went to inquire about our wait time, the staff responded rudely; (2) my friend looked at the list and counted that 8 parties of people were seated prior to us. One couple came in and waited less than 15 minutes. Absurd considering by this point we were there about 45 minutes. Add insult to injury, we befriended two awesome ladies who also waited a long period of time. Less than us, but long enough. Somehow there name was accidentally crossed off the list. When they realized this, they went to the hostesses and they were immediately placed at a table, which by the way, had been empty for over 15 minutes. Go figure! Unfortunately, our situation was still not rectified. We were livid. We thought about leaving many times, but the kiddos were hungry and just wanted some pancakes. So NOT cool Ruth's. FINALLY, we were seated. Unfortunately the staff member who was rude to my friend took our drink order. Fortunately she was there just to take our drink order. Our waiter was awesome! He really made our experience end on a positive note. I ordered the peach tea and cheesecake pancakes with a side of sausage. Everyone enjoyed their meal as well as the quirky and whimsical decor. My pancake was a smidgen overcooked, and so was my friends adorable Mickey Mouse shaped pancake. It was a bit rubbery and not easy to cut through. Geesh! I'm so bummed because I love the interior, whimsical dishes, but the amazing aesthetic don't make up for horrible service and just ok food. Plus, they never even apologized or acknowledged their mishaps. That is what irritates me the most. THIS PLACE. I am so happy that this gem popped up on my Yelp search for breakfast spots this morning. I enjoyed one of the best brunches I have had here in Indy at Ruth's Cafe. To start, the cafe has such a cozy and home-y environment. I felt so comfortable and relaxed while chatting and enjoying my meal thanks to the warm ambiance. The staff and service was great, as well. They sat us almost immediately after we walked in (even on a busy Sunday morning). They were efficient and eager to make everyone's experience enjoyable. The best part: the omelette! My goodness! I savored every bite of that hunk of egg. It was stuffed with potatoes, tomatoes, white cheddar, and bacon... does it get any better than that!? It was also served with a side of toast and fruit or salad. Also, the coffee is complimentary at the front desk, so that's a huge bonus! So overall, I gave ya two big thumbs up, Ruth's Cafe! This is a great place for a nice brunch on the north side. The outside doesn't look like much, but prepared for a 180 once you walk through the door. The decor is great, and just about everything on the walls is available for purchase. The waitstaff is very friendly, and go well out of their way to make sure you have everything you need and are enjoying yourself. Now to the food. I went with biscuits and gravy, my wife the smoked salmon benedict, and we split an order of corned beef hash. OMG. I went with the spicy chorizo gravy, and it did not disappoint. The chairs and tables are mismatched antiques, and the whole dining room feels worn in. Nothing like what you'd expect for a strip mall location. There's outdoor seating, but that is even more limited than the interior seating. This is a small cafe, but busy. I'd call ahead of time to see if they're busy. Seating is first come, first serve! The lunch combo is definitely worth checking out. Choose between a half sandwich, soups and salads. Everything is fresh and homemade! The mixed greens salad is a nice, light option for lunch, and the tomato soup is a cream-based classic. I'm definitely coming back to get a taste of their legendary breakfast! read more

Not sure if I wanna give this place a try. I decided to treat myself to breakfast and Ruth's Cafe was on my bookmark list. Before I came here I read the reviews and was actually excited to try their food. Upon arriving, I received a mediocre greeting from the host; I thought that maybe once he knew it was my first time visiting, he'd perk up a bit but nothing. I followed him to the second part of the seating area, after seeing there were no seats available in the front to find a nice corner to sit by myself. Ok cool. My waitress didn't greet me, but just asked what I would like to drink (which is a huge pet peeve of mine). When she brought my starter water (I wasn't sure what I wanted just yet); she seemingly plopped it on my table. Ooook. I noticed a couple seated behind me was getting a much more pleasant greeting from the same waitress and felt a certain kind of way. And though I was there before them, the waitress proceeded to take their order before mine....like, what?! Wasn't feeling welcomed. Not feeling a warm atmosphere; I just decided to leave. Ended up here upon seeing a lot of positive reviews from Yelp. I had driven past this for as long as I can remember. One thing off the bat, make sure to come in early if you come in for breakfast. I came in at 8:45 and there were two tables left! That includes a bar like table/ stool that I sat on (not suitable for all). That being said, I loved my table, which was a melange of posters from Star Wars :) Well, food now - Coffee - it was just alright but bummer - no whole milk is available I ordered the fabulous Biscuits and gravy - Oh Yeah! Decadent and plentiful with lots of sausage in the gravy. This is by no means a breakfast size. I was full way way into the afternoon, and I usually like to think I have a pretty big appetite. I also ordered a Resse's peanut butter cup pancake (glutton!). Very yummy, and there is Real maple syrup available - just ask for it! Service - Server came about and checked if I am doing okay 4 times during my 40ish minute spent here. And it was really busy, so hats off to her. Very friendly and efficient service. Does not look like too much at first but once entering you find an antique looking and community driven diner with A+ costumer service. Ruth's Cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating with nutritious breakfast and delicious lunch options on their menu. We were greeted at the door by an employee with extremely kind manners and got us seated immediately. Our outdoor seating experience was extremely peaceful as a waitress was quick to make sure we had our drink order in and was very patient as we figured out what to order. We both enjoyed the lunch combination option on the menu and we definitely recommend it! we didn't have that long of a wait as our waiter brought out our food almost immediately. The staff I noticed was very attentive to all their customers making sure they are okay, have everything they need, and if they can do anything for them. After finishing our lunch our waitress was quick to getting our plates out of the way and delivering our check, picking it up, and bringing it back. Came here for Saturday brunch and I was not disappointed. I called ahead to gauge the wait time and luckily there was no wait for a table for 2. There was a short wait for larger groups. First of all, after browsing through the pictures of the interior, I would describe the ambiance as to like Luke's cafe from Gilmore Girls, specifically referring to the unique coffee mug and salt/pepper shakers at each table, and not to mention the individualized decor for tables and chairs. It's a very interesting place for dining and my husband couldn't agree more as soon as he stepped in. Menu was extensive and our waitress was friendly and helpful. She pointed out the specials on the wall and I was immediately captivated. I end up getting the special scramble (pesto, cherry tomato, spinach with cheese), it came with side toast which I picked cinnamon raisin (it was excellent, came out toasted with little melted butter) and a side of seasonal fruit. Okay, I'm all about breakfast, and this place is the BOMB. When I say they have everything ...I mean there's menu with endless toppings for your pancakes. Their eggs Benedict? To die for. Biscuits and gravy for daaaaayyyyzzz. The service has always been on point even when they are busy, which is pretty much all the time. Love this little spot in Keystone. Wish I would have known about it sooner. It has more of a B-Rip vibe to it. Decided to have brunch there today. Started with the cheese and fruit platter. Nothing amazing about it. I would say they may have purchased the cheeses from the local grocery. It consisted of crumbled blue cheese, crumbled goat cheese, shredded cheddar, slices of Swiss and brie. Catch my drift? It was also served with fresh fruit and slices of toast. if you are going to do a cheese plate do it right and serve wedges. It's easier to eat. But on a good note since they served all this over a bed of spring mix I took the rest home and plan on having it as a salad later. I ordered the eggs benedict over crab cakes. First time for me yet good. I did try the tomato basil soup which is made in house. That was also tasty. I also tried the gourmet grilled cheese. OUTSTANDING! Food is great, waiting to get seated isnt awful. But waiting for food?? Jeeeez it's like over an hour at times.

We had a lovely Saturday brunch here. We came right before 11 and were seated almost immediately. When we left, there was a wait. Service we quick, welcoming and friendly. Coffee was good. They had homemade scones, cookies and cinnamon rolls to start. Tons of add ins are available for their pancakes and lefse (a Norwegian style crepe). I had the banana Nutella lefse - huge and quite yummy! Hubby had 1/2 order biscuits & gravy with lots of sausage in the gravy. He also got a Reese PB cup pancake but it was too huge and rich to finish! Also tons of different Benedicts and specials. A great local brunch option! read more

I've been to Ruth's just twice in six years, but the most recent visit (3 weeks ago) reminded me why I need to stop here every time I visit home. Though the location is trapped in the traffic warzone of Keystone@the Crossing / west of Castleton, the menu and service are both stellar and worth your time and the hassle of getting around this area in a motor vehicle. Whether it is breakfast or lunch, you are bound to find something to sate your hunger. The homemade chicken salad sandwich is a thing of beauty. I like my "salad sandwiches" to be light on the mayo; Ruth's fits the bill. Fresh celery provides a nice bite and the cashews bring it all together on fresh baked bread. Served with a cup of their tomato basil soup; this is a nearly perfect lunch. The server -- Chris -- was fantastic. He was hilarious, a great sense of humor, and provided the correct amount of sarcasm as he needled my older brother and dad. His patience while we waited for a very late-arriving relative was a nice touch, especially given the late busy lunch hour on a Saturday. The service was timely, friendly, and not overbearing. The sign of a good meal is a quiet table with everyone enjoying their respective dishes. I'd say Ruth's accomplished that and more. If you can deal with the traffic on the NE side of town, avoid the chains and hightail it to Ruth's. You will not be disappointed. My only regret is not trying the Lefse! read more
