I stop by the store when I'm in the area, there's no doubt everything is over priced and sometimes the quality is hit and miss ... last couple of times butter croissant has been too dense and burned, the chocolate chip cookies my kids declared, don't buy these anymore. Since the store is pretty small and they do not print you receipt at the store, it's always either emailed or texted (I'm sure not everyone looks at those type of receipts right away) completely by accident I noticed and extra charge and asked the girl I have four items what is the fifth charge for, and she told me the 12% it's for our health benefits since all employees are full time. I've seen similar charges in LA and SF and they are totally optional and never more than 5% I told her I won't be paying it and she told me I have no other choice. Seriously 12 % it's outrageous!!! When all they do is put your stuff in a bag and ring you up. I said they should have some sort of sign indicating the new charges, and she said she let the management know. Later in the day when I talked to the store manager, she said they had recently removed the sign and since they pay their employees higher wages they need to cover their health insurance as well ... I simply told her as an employer if you are not capable of providing your employees the benefits they need and rely on your customers to cover the cost you should not be in business. I received an email not sure who it was from told me that their customers are more than happy to pay the 12% also, there was a sign indicating the charges when I was there ... which it was total BS otherwise when I told the girl they need to put a sign, if there was one she would've pointed it out to me, not to mention store manager said they had a sign at the beginning for a short time and it been removed, which I hardly doubt there was one to begin with. With their high prices and the 12% Employee Benefit Charges, I personally won't be supporting this type of businesses. They are not the only game in town. read more

Not to be dramatic, but this place has changed my life. As a gluten-free girly and it's been so long since since I had bread that wasn't from rice flour or some other crummy alternative. This sourdough is actually perfect for my gluten sensitivity. It Not only that, but all of their baked goods don't trigger a reaction. My favorite place for bread, pastries and wine. They sell whole quiche with fresh seasonal ingredients, frozen biscuits and cookies that my family members all love!! Their pies are also fantastic. Everything I have tasted is delicious, there is an enormous variety and I am never disappointed. The service is amazing, the employees are kind, knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend! I heard about this organic bakery and was super excited to try it so I tagged it. Its been on my list for over a year and maybe I had too high expectations but sadly I didn't really love it. Perhaps I am a bakery snob as I LOVE bread. Everyone I go in the world- Rome, Hong Kong, London, Paris, etc- I always run to the nearest bakery. I live in Los Angeles and we have such amazing bakeries such as Gjusta, Jyan Isaac, Bub and Grandma's, Lodge, Tartine, etc that my expectations were on that level. Here I got the brioche bread and was disappointed. I wasn't a fan of the combination using sourdough as a brioche. To me brioche bread is an egg bread not sourdough embedded with sugar. The almond butter was also disappointing. Half of the jar felt it was full of honey and half of it almonds, so that the honey overpowered the almonds. The plum pastry was very good and probably the best item I got. Normally I would give this 4 stars however the thing that bothered me was the price. I paid over $45 for a few items. It was just way too expensive. For that money I could have bought a whole cake at Porto's Bakery! Maybe its due to the high rent being in the Lido Marina or Newport. Either way the price was super high given I got like 3 items. Plus I just went to the new Bub and Grandmas in Echo Park. Granted its not in a fancy beautiful mall, but the bread and pastries are out of this world for a good price. Recently I visited Rye Goods. I had the bread of the week, the seasonal danish, the banana bread, and a chocolate chip cookie. Everything was delicious. The bread was truly superior-- good crumb, crunchy seeds, great flavor. I highly recommend this bakery. read more

A truly artisan bakery. Our family really enjoyed the baguette- simple but unique. Seemed like whole grain and sourdough, more complex. I had some New Zealand butter with seaweed salt on top which was great. Also St Andre triple cream was delicious with this bread. Croissants were flaky and complex - Brie onion was great. Jalapeno cheese bread was also great. Sour, spicy, cheesy with nicely browned crusty. "Bien cuit" not "burned". Next day I heated toaster oven 300F and baked with water atomized for steam 7 minutes, crust came back nicely. I think pricing is fair. These are artisan goods and take alot of time for fairly low volume. The quality is very high. If you are on a tight budget I still recommend you try at least one pastry or baguette. Bakeries like this should be supported. Otherwise we are left with only mediocre choices. I am partial to several bakeries in the Bay area. Rye Goods is very comparable! read more

First visit to Rye Goods in Laguna Beach. The food was delicious and service was attentive and extremely friendly. I read some reviews complaining about the prices. This is quality food people, you pay a premium if you want to eat good healthy food. The seasonal soup was over the top and avocado toast was nicely prepared and presented. It was delicious. A real gem in Laguna Beach and finally a bakery with great bread! Very happy to have RG's in the community! read more

To be honest- shocked they have such good reviews. Their coffee is subpar at best. I got the morning sugar latte and my boyfriend got the vanilla latte and they tasted the same. As for their food, I don't know if it's because they're trying to be super unique but it's almost too much flavor going on? It was just a lot.... If they would've done just a simple breakfast burrito it could've been so good but the eggs were overcooked, the potatoes were weirdly spiced and it was TINY. We also got their breakfast Sammie and jeez. I was starving so I ate it but it ended up making me feel so sick later in the day. It was super oily, and again just way too much going on. Lastly, their service- god awful. The girl at the front was rude for no reason and for how much everything was I just found it ridiculous. Their saving grace was that the banana bread was decent. This is the most adorable bakery. There is no place like it -- all organic & sourdough. I think that everything I have tried is delicious (the bagel sandwich!, the coffees, the pastries, the frozen empanadas, etc.). The staff are always friendly. It's a great location for walking afterwards. I do wish they had a working bathroom -- it feels like the sign on the door says it hasn't been working for at least a year. There are restrooms in the shopping center but they are less convenient, and it seems like for the price we are paying for these goods, that they should have a working restroom. read more

If the person helping you out suggests you try something... listen to them as they will be correct. Many of the options will pleasantly surprise you. The bread is fresh and always great quality. Stopped here again since I desperately needed a loaf of bread, and this is in my neighborhood, but still not sold on the bread. I found myself wondering if it was fresh baked. At $14.50 a loaf I would hope it would be. Even toasted, it came out very dry. I wouldn't mind paying the price if it was truly good, but it's really not. I used to patronize another bakery like this one in Washington, D.C. called Seylou. I was hoping Rye Goods would be comparable, but honestly, it's not close. I do like the pasta salad here, but that does sit on the shelf and has a "sell-by" date on the bottom. Again, at $14.50 for a small container, is it too much to make fresh each day?? On a pleasant midmorning stroll down the famed Lido Marina, at the apex of the Balboa Peninsula, in Newport Beach, I wandered into Rye Goods to sample some tasty delights. Upon making it through the line, which was out the door, I was greeted by the staff, which are enthusiastic, energetic, and friendly; they go above and beyond to make sure every customer feels taken care of. I tried a specialty of the day, the s'mores croissant, a novel concoction, stuffed with chocolate and capped with a frosty crown of marshmallow. The bagel egg sammy is a delicious treat on the savory side, I paired it with an everything bagel, which had a sumptuous assortment of flavors from the seeds, egg, sweet potato hash, chive cream cheese, and a chili crunch oil that packed a slight kick! The specialty coffee was stellar, featuring morning sugar, cardamom, and oat milk, a great way to wake up to a beautiful day. One of my favorite aspects of this place, is their commitment to environmentally friendly practices, which is exhibited in their compostable materials for packaging, and their commitment to fresh and locally sourced ingredients. I have been a customer since the very early days when bread was made in a garage in Tustin and delivered to my home. I have faithfully followed the evolution of the bakery. I really like the space in the new Irvine branch and want to support it. That said, the prices have become outrageous. I ordered a pear galette for Xmas ($38) which was a dull, flavorless disappointment. My friend bought the apple pie ($52) and again found it very ordinary and ridiculously overpriced. I am a bread snob and like the bread but do not love it - Whole Foods has better bread at much lower prices. That said, stick with the pastries and coffee that are the best options. Alrighty, I was recommended this place by a friend so I figured I'd try it out. First thing you see when you walk in is a rack full of fresh bread. Awesome! Behind it was their expansive menu. My go-to at most coffee shops is an iced vanilla latte and a butter croissant. To my disappointment, they told me they don't have an ice machine and only make hot drinks. Bummer, but whatever, I'll just get a hot vanilla latte. Again, at most places, a latte just comes with "regular" milk which most of the time is whole. Well, the day I went, the only milks they had were oat milk and almond milk. Not sure how you go about milking an almond or an oat but that's besides the point. I don't personally seek out or desire milk alternatives but I figured I'd give the oat milk a shot. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the latte was. Downside though was the latte was $5.50 for an 8oz cup. As for the croissant, it wasn't like any other croissant I've ever had. It was hard and crunchy on the outside and soft and almost too moist on the inside. And if you imagine what a whole wheat croissant looks like, that's what they have. Couldn't taste the butter. It definitely wasn't my favorite on its own, but I think it would serve better as sandwich bread. Brought home a loaf of bread. Nice quality, crusty on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside. Came to just over $26 for a coffee, croissant, and loaf of bread. Pricey! Would I come back? Probably! read more

I went in to try this place out and I will not be back. The people were very friendly, however I was TOLD I will be tipping ($4.57), NOT asked, TOLD. Mind you I grabbed my own soup and they bagged a couple pastries. I tip all the time, however being told what I would tip and not asked if it was okay is incredibly wrong.
