There are some good bakeries in Orange County, but never before have I felt like I'm eating something that belongs in LA, SF, or NYC... until Rye Goods. What can I say. Is it their attention to detail? Maybe. Is it their willingness to experiment on a weekly basis. Probably. Is it the unreal deliciousness of their baked goods. YES. I love Rye Goods. I started supporting them a few years ago before they got a brick and mortar location and were still baking in a large garage and have always loved their incredibly flavorful, crusty on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside bread. Most, if not all, of their goods are sourced using flour from the Tehachapi grain project and therefore made with local heirloom grains. Their pastries have a distinctive fermented flavor in all the right ways that make sourdough so delicious. They are experts in bread making and laminated pastry. They are also run and operated by friendly, young people and have great customer service. Some things people haven't talked about: -Things sell out fast! (Like within 30 minutes fast). If there is something you want and especially if it's being promoted on Instagram, you'll need to be one of the first few people in line to get it. It also appears as though they only do one bake a day of each item, so once it's gone, it's gone. -The line: Since most people are trying to get said limited specialty items, the line can get pretty ridiculous. I got there at 8:10 on a Saturday morning and was walking out with my items at 8:55. The space is also fairly small, and in the times of COVID-19 they are only allowing 2 parties in at a time. It usually thins out after a few hours, but again there are less options. A few of my favorites so far (although you can't go wrong with anything): -Apple galette: looks simple, tastes incredible. There's a tiny bit of some sort of cream that brings a lightness and tang, fresh layer of apples, and a dash of cinnamon all sitting in a flaky pastry. -Blood orange donut: Perfectly sweet, rich and creamy, with a light citrus finish (they don't skimp on the filling) -Lemon meringue morning bun: Probably one of the most popular and Yelpable/Instagramable options due to the meringue, but I think the best part is how the caramelized crust of the morning bun is cut by the sharpness of the lemon curd. I am writing with the optimism that they will eventually figure out the business side a little more moving forward and don't want to fault them a star for being brand new. I saw quite a few parties give up waiting in line or complaining about things selling out, and hope that as the novelty lessens or their baking abilities increase they are better able to keep up with the demand. I wish they had paper menus available or even just one posted with the daily specials on the door so people could take a picture and plan out what they wanted before they walked in the door, which would probably increase efficiency as well. I am excited to see what is to come from this little shop moving forward as I have heard plans to implement a deli counter for soups and sandwiches. Sourdough croissants made of spelt and rye? Not your ordinary buttery croissant, but a delicious take on croissants nonetheless. If I'm not mistaken most, if not all their pastries and bread are sourdough based. Their offerings have a very rustic earthy taste to them which makes everything tasting so warm and delicious. Been to Rye Goods couple of times now. Tried almost all the items. I was super psyched with the organic rye bakery at first thinking this would be a much closer bakery than Lodge Bread in LA which long drives are endured from OC to get quality bread, baked goods. But after all the tasting, I still prefer Lodge Bread in LA - OK, they are not an organic bakery but all the bread and pastry, cakes, etc are of outstanding quality. I also find Rye Goods exceedingly expensive compare with Lodge Bread. Rye Goods bread are smaller in size and yet 20% more expensive than Lodge Bread. The only item from Rye Goods that I would buy again is the morning bun. All the other items are good but not worth the price I'm afraid. Clearly there is room and demands for proper Sourdough / Rye bakers in Newport Beach area of OC. Perhaps Lodge Bread should open a branch here. I would love to see that - a more healthy supply vs demand market place. read more

This place makes amazingly good nutritious bread. I purchased the loaf of country bread and ate some with butter and coffee and I was extremely happy. If my stomach could smile, oh ,it would have been. Very good olive oil instead of butter would have worked as well. I also enjoyed their other delicious creations such as the morning bun, apple galette, and the bostock. I also later enjoyed the leftover bread in sandwiches. Actually with bread this good anything else I put in it is going to be a delicious plus. Everything was very good including the coffee that they just started selling. Any community, and I mean anywhere, would be lucky to have a bakery this good! I will definitely stop back again when I'm in town from Chicago to try more items on their menu. Can't beat their sourdough bread and love that there are no preservatives or fillers. The hummus and other refrigerated items are also delish, and usually really like the wine selection. The staff is friendly and helpful. It is very expensive for the pastries, but you're paying for the quality. I don't love the automatic 12% "employee benefits" added on...the employer should be paying for those and tipping is optional based on service. I always leave a 15/20% tip anyway and now this has deterred me from doing that. read more

Wow. Just, wow. I was at a coffee nearby and saw that some customers were eating a really good looking pop tart, but it was sold out! So the barista kindly told me that I could go to Rye Goods directly to get one. I am so glad I did because this is one of the best pop tarts I have had! Ive tried many locally made pop tarts from different bakeries but this blows all of them out of the water! The place is in a small area with limited street parking but there is a parking structure. The first time at Rye, I got a morning bun which personally was too sweet for me. It wasn't bad though. However, the sourdough bread is another story. We went back a second time and picked up a sourdough to make Thanksgiving sandwiches with our leftover turkey and wow, what a delicious loaf of bread (especially toasted). Half-baked effort! :-( On my 5th or so visit to Rye Goods, I was very disappointed to taste the so-called, sourdough baguette not even closely resembling the previous ones I had so enjoyed & told all my neighbors about. There was none of the splendid crustiness or much of a hint of sour taste or rye flour in this. The owner compounded the issue when I submitted feedback, calling my comments obnoxious. Apparently this person forgot Rule #1, The customer is always right. More than good luck will be needed for the long term survival of this establishment. I will not return. Rye Goods on Lido has changed my life. Possibly a slight exaggeration, but they have definitely made my family's bread life a lot better. Rye Goods bread is the only bread I buy anymore. Our favorite is the cheddar cheese & jalapeño, but their sesame sourdough and plain sourdough are incredible. Their seeded loaf will elevate your avocado toast. I don't eat a lot of bread anymore, but when I do I want it to be great. Not only is Rye Goods bread delicious, but their sour dough and house milled rye flour is better for your body. I generally avoid their pastries, because at my age I just can't eat them very often, but if you do, definitely try some of their savory options. I do admit to keeping a bag of their frozen chocolate chip cookies in my freezer for impromptu guests and friends and family gatherings. These warm, chocolate cookies are adored by everyone I have served them to. If you want to indulge in something special try their frozen biscuits. But be forewarned, they are almost a meal in themselves. Their seeded and seasonal granolas are great breakfast options. Not overly sweet and full of healthy nuts and seeds to sprinkle on your breakfast yogurt. Don't even get me started on their house made salted peanut butter. It is phenomenal. Finally, the staff at the bakery are warm and personable. It is a happy environment you will want to go back to. Seriously. Rye Goods bakery has elevated our local food community. I love baked goods. Danishes, pies, fruit tarts, croissants--I want them all. The problem with baked goods is they're so often disappointing. They look delicious stacked up in the case but turn out to be dry, or too sweet, or boring, or flavorless. Enter Rye Goods. As far as I can tell, there's nary a baked good that is dry, or too sweet, or boring, or flavorless. In fact, none of them is just passable, or not disappointing. It appears that every single thing they make is superlative. It's beautiful to look at, and even better once you put it in your mouth. On our first visit we ordered a smattering of items--morning bun, seasonal cake, jalapeño cheese, croissant, and several others, plus a loaf of bread (don't judge me), and everything was amazing. We planned to go back the next day for more, but turns out they're closed on Mondays (there, I've warned you). Back in 2017, to get Rye Goods bread you had to order it and pick it up from their kitchen on a Saturday or happen to it carried at a local coffee shop. I bought my first loaf from a coffee shop. I thought it might be a tad expensive. And then I had my first slice. HOOKED! There is no bread that compares! I buy them, slice them, and stash in the freezer. And now their menu has exploded with so many incredible baked goods and deli items. Their jams and peanut butter are incredible. Any of their pastries are delicious but I particularly love their chocolate chip cookies and their almond cake when they have it (can't remember what it's called but it has seasonal fruit on top). The baked goods here look exceptional. The staff were lovely. I went to purchase hot cross buns (being a New Zealander, Easter is not the same without Hot Cross Buns!). First they were $19 for 6. Outrageous. Then was charged a compulsory 12% staff benefit tax. The staff, very politely, tried to explain it was for tips. Tips are optional though. I was so shocked I returned them. In times of high inflation, to insist your customers pay an additional 12% is just not on. read more

Picked up some sourdough bread from this bakery over the weekend to try. They suggested the country sourdough, so we grabbed one off the shelf they had. I believe they bake them fresh and have them delivered from their Tustin location. They suggested to not cut it until we eat it to keep the bread from drying and to store outside for 2-3 days then the freezer to maintain the quality of the bread. It tasted really good with eggs or for avocado toast. Highly recommend trying! Located in LIDO area and the service is great. read more

I arrived when they opened and didn't leave with my box of goods for an hour. I would definitely not wait like that for this bakery again. I love the look of the bakery and the look of the items, but they fell short. I got a lot of items for us to share. The semlor special (which two of the three flavors were sold out by the time I got inside) was hugely disappointing. The bun was dry and the whipped cream was odd tasting. The morning bun was dry and tough. The bostock was the worst. Burnt on the bottom and dry like a piece of toast. The best item was the plain butter croissant. It was an interesting twist on a croissant. And I also enjoyed the sesame loaf, though it tasted a bit more burnt that I would like also. There is a lot of potential here and perhaps it will be worked out over time, but for the wait and high prices, it's currently not what I expected and hoped for. read more

First time at Rye Goods! I picked up a Peach Crumble Pie in support of Gather For Good, a non-profit focused on supporting important orgs fighting for equity and justice in the Black community! Kudos to Rye Goods for the pie! While the crust was buttery, it wasn't over the top and you feel as if eating four slices in one sitting won't make you sick to your stomach...so yes, I did have three slices! The peaches were the star of the dish, finished nicely to bring out the caramelized flavor and had just perfect texture with each bite. I've had this place on my list for years and finally tried it but was pretty disappointed. I ordered two pastries, a scone and a croissant, and both were very dense and a little dry.
