Visited for a Wednesday evening dinner with friends and once again, Rye did not disappoint. We had reservations and were seated immediately when we arrived. The place was packed, so my recommendations would certainly be to get reservations in advance, even during the week. The cocktails, food, service and dessert were all amazing - you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I had my stand-by salmon, which I always get, but my three companions all had the burger. We ordered the Brussels sprouts for an appetizer and...YUM! Don't leave Rye without having at least one dessert - we enjoyed both the Banana Cream Pie and the Chocolate Espresso Cake. One of my friends claimed it was the best banana cream pie she has ever had! I do not disagree! Because the place was so full, it was a bit noisy, so I probably wouldn't recommend if that's something that bothers you. We lingered after our meal, when the restaurant had cleared out quite a bit, and all commented how much easier it was to visit with fewer people. Pretty sure Rye will forever be on my restaurant rotation in southern Johnson County! read more

Rye, you have disappointed. We love your brunch and make it a point to get cinnamon rolls often. Today I stopped in and bought 2 cinnamon rolls to go ($13.75). 2 hours later, delivered them to a family member and took a bite... I was thoroughly embarrassed. Dry, Hard, crumbling... everything that a $7 cinnamon roll should not be!! I assumed it was an accident, maybe these weren't thrown away 4 days ago or they were not properly covered, left out? I quickly called rye.. I told the employee, "something is wrong with these usually amazing cinnamon rolls, I got a couple of bad ones... I can bring them back orThrow them away, but we can't eat them! he sarcastically said, " what do you want me to do".. I said "what do you normally do for issues like this? I just spent nearly $14 on these stale baked goods." He replied, " I'll give the chef your feedback, have a good one"... click. If this is really how you handle customer complaints, how disappointing! I expect more from a higher end restaurant in Mission. I would be happy to bring these back for a refund or exchange. We at lunch at Rye. We tried the deviled eggs for appetizer--delicious. One of us had the Shrimp and grits; the other had 2-piece fried chicken. Both dishes earned 5 stars! Service was friendly and helpful in navigating the menu. The ambiance reminded me of an upscale neighborhood eatery. We left with cookies and their homemade banana cream pie! read more

I Freakin' Love this Place--The Food, Drinks, Ambiance, Servers, Everything. This place is solid and consistent with the food and service. It's a great place for business lunches, date night, and even large parties. Their menu features farm-to-table ingredients and unique appetizers and entrees. And they have a kids menu--which was a surprise to us. We couldn't decide what to start off with, so we got both the Whipped Goat Cheese ($11), with Speckman local honey, sea salt, and herbs, served with grilled toast. We loved it--the honey and cheese combination was perfect and balanced well. I used the bread to scrape everything out of that jar. And we ordered the Blue Crab Hushpuppies ($16) for six hushpuppies made from crab, bell pepper, celery, with lemon and a spicy aioli. I fought my date for them (she won). I had a hard time deciding whether to dip or not to dip as the hushpuppies were prepared and cooked perfectly with great crab-flavors. I ordered the Spiced-Rubbed Duck Breast ($31), with Farro risotto, scallion pesto, squash salad, oyster mushrooms, and veal jus. It. Was. Delicious. Everything about it worked well together. I made sure to include every ingredient and accoutrement with every bite to get that complex flavor profile. My date ordered the Pan-Roasted Scotch Salmon ($31.50), with wild Indian rice, fennel, carrots, celery, and a champagne vinaigrette. The salmon was high-quality and cooked perfectly--a nice grill on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside. I love their pickles--they come in a small jar and are lightly brined and seasoned. I steal them from other people in my party and from other tables. Overall, this place hits it out of the park every time. I can't wait to try their Plaza location. read more

Atmosphere: laid back, large outdoor seating area (good for social distancing) Rye makes fantastic fried chicken - that's one of their staples that is always quite consistent! Crispy, not too drenched in oil, and well seasoned. You can order half chicken, 3 piece, full - so there are plenty of options! I'm not a big fan of their pickles - a bit too unseasoned that it's almost watery. They also make a great grilled skirt steak with chimichurri. Their drink menu is quite extensive and I love their more refreshing options when eating outside in the summer heat! Service: generally quite good. We did have a weird interaction with our waitress when we sent back some water cups because there were lipstick marks on a few of them - instead of apologizing she rolled her eyes when I handed them back to her. We had reservations for 5:30 and we got there a little early so we sat in the bar and enjoyed a couple drinks before dinner. The waitress recommended a signature drink for my wife which she loved and our bar table service was great. We were shown our table for dinner, again our server 2as very nice, efficient and accommodating. We had gone there with the idea of trying the fri3d chicken. We both ordered the 3 piece and I got all white. They came with homemade pickles and ham gravy which went well with the masked potatoes we shared and the rolls.muffins you get. The chicken was moist and tender inside and very crispy on the outside. Overall great meal only thing is muffins and rolls were very dry to the point they disintegrated. I love the patio at Rye. I could spend an entire day under one of those blue umbrellas! It's first come, first served, always busy but somehow I've never waited long for a spot. Love the whipped goat cheese - a classic. Excellent for a business lunch or a girlfriend happy hour. On my most recent visit I tried the wings and fries. Loved that the fires were served with that unique ham gravy. The sauce on the wings had a little kick but definitely not spicy. If you prefer well done wings like I do, I recommend asking for extra crispy! read more

I had only ever been to the plaza location which is usually pretty cramped for brunch but due to the pandemic we have been wanting to sit outside with more distance and the Leawood patio delivered on several occasions. Our toddler also loved it when we brought him along. The food is very delicious and they have lots of fun craft cocktails. Call me crazy but I didn't love Rye. Not to say the food was bad, it was good food. I think I had high expectations because of the good reviews from friends and acquaintances. First of all, it was so loud in there! And yes I probably sound like an old woman saying that, but it's true! We were a party of 5 and I had a difficult time hearing people across the table. We also sat at a table near the kitchen which didn't help. I went with the Rye breakfast - eggs, hash browns, biscuit and gravy, bacon and sausage. While it was good, it wasn't overwhelming. Maybe I should have gone with something else. I did really like the bacon (how can you not?) and the hash browns. The others in my group really loved Rye! Maybe I need to give it another chance and order something different. I will say that we had good service! read more

Rye is one of the few restaurants in the KC area that serves shrimp n grits and having spent some time in the south, I really miss this classic southern dish! Rye's shrimp n grits comes with a lot of sauce and includes pulled pork which is atypical but still incredibly tasty. I ordered this dish for the first time five years ago and then again yesterday (see photos below) and the flavor has definitely changed. They've lessened their portions and skimped on the pulled pork. The pulled pork really brings out more flavor and without much of it, it tasted kinda plain. It was disappointing. Their fried chicken is fantastic and I would definitely recommend getting it if you're not on a diet. I wouldn't recommend the steak and eggs though (off their breakfast menu). The hangar steak was really hard to chew and not as crispy as I'd like it. I love the rustic yet modern interior of the restaurant. This was a great dinner and I would return again in the future. To start, the atmosphere is classy. You can feel comfortable wearing a tie or you can come in jeans. They bring you rolls and corn bread, which were delicious. I ordered the Steak and Mushroom Garganelli, which is a pasta dish with pieces of steak, shiitake mushrooms, scallions, sour cream, horseradish and herb breadcrumbs. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend if you are feeling like pasta. They had a decent wine selection. I ordered a dessert, which was some type of cake (can't remember) that tasted a like a spiced cake drizzled with caramel. It was enjoyed with a side of ice cream and some top notch marshmallows which were really good! It surprised me that the marshmallows really stood out! They were much denser than normal. Went to Rye for a weekend brunch. The wait staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. She mentioned that the owner is a phenomenal pastry chef but we didn't get a chance to try any of it. The breakfast itself was good but nothing special. I tried the spicy chicken sandwich which wasn't too spicy but a bit too soggy for my taste. Husband tried the fried chicken which was perfectly crunchy with a well seasoned batter. I might need to go back for happy hour and dinner but I'm not sure if I'd come back for brunch. The patio has a great vibe on a nice summer day. read more

Great food, really good service IF you have $$$$ to spend. I used to go here but during the inflation times recently they seem to think that $80 for a steak is acceptable. Here's a clue, it ain't! You can get way better value @ g.jilberts (lysdexics par teople poo) or even a certain southern state steakhouse. The menu used to be broad and feature seasonal specials like gus.pahtcho (cold tomato soup) but after limiting their menu to like 1 or 2 pages these (french onion soup) seasonal specials seem to be no more. I came here for my birthday dinner, I definitely made the right choice. Steak night Monday, what a deal! I got the Ribeye, Wedge salad (which I have true disdain for but this one was good), and macaroni and cheese. The steak had a perfect char on in and the macaroni and cheese was perfectly balanced. Deviled eggs were also there, and they were so good, mustard based and delicious. Oh Rye, how I love thee. I've been many times and have always had an amazing experience. I took my Mom out last night for what was her first time to eat in a restaurant in over a year. She's had both Covid vaccines now and felt comfortable to go and dine in a restaurant. We had reservations at 5:30 and were seated in the back which I believe is normally used for private parties, but opened up now to provide socially distanced dining. We both had a cocktail, I had the spring time mule and my mom had the Pimm's Cup, both were delicious. I've had most things on the menu, my favorites are the shrimp and grits and the chicken and dumplings. We both had one of each of those entrees last night. We always leave enough room for pie though and shared a slice of banana cream. I don't think I've ever seen my mom enjoy a meal as much as she did last night. It was fun to see her have such a good time. Rye never disappoints. I will always recommend to others and be back soon. read more

This place came highly recommended and based on the very unique menu, their large list of whiskey and wine (as well as cocktails) and the quality of the food, they definitely didn't disappoint... Service could have been a little better though. We dined here as a large group enjoying a business dinner, which meant a fair amount of wine and lots of items being ordered from their vast menu. For those of us who are considered "foodies" we definitely got our fix! The appetizers were perfectly prepared and abundant in size. Deviled eggs didn't seem to have much of a horseradish "bite" to them, but were very tasty, nonetheless. The BBQ burnt ends were outstanding! Very flavorful, tender and full-o-beef! Charcuterie was nicely laid out with a decent assortment, but the crab hushpuppies were interesting and probably one of the overall favs! Their BBQ sauce on the table was really good on many things, from their tasty cornbread to their burnt ends and end a small dab on their tomahawk added an interesting flair. The wedge salad was outstanding! All items on it was very fresh and came together nicely under that dressing! Entrée course was just as exciting and flavorful! Their fried chicken is definitely something worth trying and quite nicely done. Some pieces were overcooked ever-so-slightly, but overall, the tenderness of the chicken (appeared they were soaked in buttermilk or brine) and the amazing fried crust were what made these pieces of chicken really stand out! The tomahawk was perfectly prepared! The quality of the meat is what helped make it perfect too - OUTSTANDING! Definitely sharable between an entire family of three! The other entrées were quite perfectly done too and something we all enjoyed. Cocktail menu was very nicely laid out and executed perfectly! Desserts are supposedly made in-house and they seemed to taste that fresh and offered a perfect end to a perfect dinner. I can see why this place came so highly recommended and I'd definitely recommend it to everyone visiting this area too! The only reason that I gave this restaurant four stars is that I couldn't find a stand out signature item on the menu that would make it a true standout from other places in the same vicinity. The food was very good, the service was very attentive. The prices are similar to other restaurants in the area, and the portions are GENEROUS. However, the menu offerings are also very similar to other places within the vicinity, as well. Blending in, especially when your closest competitors are Tavern, Blue Koi, etc. isn't a bad thing. The uniqueness is just at more of a premium to me because I have to travel a bit to get there. There is also the issue of parking, which is very limited near the restaurant. It isn't necessarily a detraction, but folks that aren't familiar should anticipate that before going out. read more

The ONLY complaint we had tonight was about the chimichurri sauce that comes with the hangar steak... we've gotten the hangar steak entree many, many times, and while the steak alone is fantastic, the sauce is what makes it amazing. Tonight, the sauce was different. It's usually kind of chunky, flavorful, with cilantro and parsley. Tonight it was blended smooth, kind of bland, and heavy on the parsley. The waiter said this is how it's always been, but all three of us that regularly order it disagree. A friend of mine gave me the name of this spot while I was passing through Kansas City for work. The chef is a James Beard award winner and my interest was captivated by the outstanding Yelp reviews Rye already had. It was just me dining so I took a seat at the bar which was beautiful. I loved the attention to detail that the wait staff gave throughout my entire meal. Full water glasses, a place mat, a considerate amount of bread (given I was dining for 1), etc. The little details made the experience very special. I settled on the Squash Soup and the Duck entree offered on the menu and waited while sipping on a local beer from Boulevard Brewing Co. The soup was unlike any squash soup I'd ever had. Rich, creamy, and a taste of horseradish. The crunch of the pumpkin seeds on top almost made this a complete meal for me. The presentation was stunning. I was almost too full to eat my Duck, but when it came out I knew immediately I was going to love that too. It was cooked a perfect rare-medium soaked in pesto and oils with the most delicate mix of mushrooms and homemade gnocchi. I was sure to sit and savor this entree. It was rich and fatty. I wouldn't have changed a thing. I ended up taking half of the duck back to my hotel and had a beautiful leftover breakfast the next day. Loved this recommendation. Rye is a wonderful Kansas treasure fit for foodies. I loved it! read more
