Listen, if you read nothing past this first sentence read this; go to S&S Cafeteria! Those low reviews are bologna (fried bologna, depending on what day you go by). This is Memaw in the kitchen with Patsy Cline and George Jones on the radio with a can of Crisco on the stove kind of place. If country food goes to heaven, this is it. I love this place! Fried chicken so good you can eat the skin separate from the meat. Desserts make you think it's Thanksgiving. Sweet tea that makes your lips shiny and cornbread muffins you'll want to get at least two of. The team is top notch, friendly, and always ready with a refill. I recommend joining their rewards club; you accrue points based on how much you spend and you get notified of specials. This is a tried and true staple cafeteria in Augusta. Nothing fancy about this eatery at all. However, if you want good homestyle cooked foods this is the place. As you move down the food display you select your desired dishes (salad, fruits, veggies, meats, desserts, breads .... Yum) and drinks. What a lunch I had today. In all the years we've been in Augusta, it's only my second visit to S&S cafeteria. It's conveniently located near work so I went today. I'd forgotten cafeteria lines and was delighted with the friendly staff who were so helpful during my visit. With every course S&S spoiled me with too many choices. Three types of fish in two ways, six variations of cornbread, etc. The small serving dishes are deceptive and didn't prepare me for the bounty of food served. No Michelin stars here, but everything was reminiscent of a family reunion or a Thanksgiving spread. Good food, in good quantity, served by smiling faces in a brightly lit dining room. As stuffed as I was, it stunned me the cost wasn't higher. Especially in this time of inflation and swelling prices. I'm planning my next visit and hope to see you while I'm there. read more

The best kept secret is the Prime Rib special every Sunday. It is the best prime rib in town and you don't have to take out a bank loan to pay for it. You can pay three times as much in a fancy restaurant but it won't be as good. You can watch them cut your slice, select your vegetables and desert and be at your table enjoying your meal in the time it takes for you to wait for a waitress in in a restaurant. I go here occasionally when I have to make a trip to Augusta. Which is a few times a year. The staff seems friendly. The food is pretty good. If you know anything about the cafeterias, you know that it's home cooking style for the most part. It would be great if the place could get a nice interior update to give it a fresh look. I do recommend, and as of now, I will continue to go back, usually for lunch, but dinner is just as good, whenever I visit Augusta. One thing I have noticed about Augusta, maybe it's just me or because I don't live there, but the people there seem a little bit nicer than where I'm from, just outside Atlanta. read more

Visited an old friend today. Yes the S&S cafeteria on Walton Way. It was always a treat when our parents would make the drive from Aiken to eat at now gone location in North Augusta. Lunch time today and it did not disappoint. Cafeteria style from salads to bread. I had the salmon patty with broccoli casserole and fried okra. And of course a piece of egg custard pie. The food was great and tasty like I have always had. Service was spot on and wonderful from our server Casey . If you have never been or it's been awhile go check it out. Went here 9/21/24. The food was mid to say the least. I tried the white meat qtr chicken w/ dressing. A house salad, liver w/ onions and rice, cranberry sauce and peach cobbler. The taste was decent...seasoned, etc. But it had a strange smell and my liver was a bit tough. I like the military chow line ordering style but the building itself is in need of some renovations! The service was top notch and the staff friendly and very helpful and astute to your needs. The atmosphere is a bit drab and all I saw was the elderly enjoying their meals. My family went to S & S Cafeteria last Saturday. I was so-excited about the menu online I got the best seasoned cabbage, greens,so tasty , the cornbread and pea salad yummy and chicken breast so good. But the best thing was onions , hot sauce, green chili peppers on the help yourself table. I I had 2 cornbreads cause I know between all my stuff I was going to even enjoy sopping the vegetables juices up . I enjoy country food ! Fast food doesn't compare with this . I was extremely disappointed. It was way too expensive, and the quality of the food was downright disgusting. First, the ladies on the line were very friendly. They treated me like a valued person. A big problem was they don't have enough dining room help. When I carried my tray in the dining room, I couldn't find a place to sit. And it wasn't because it was crowded. In the section I finally found a table, there were 6-7 un-bused tables. The table I finally chose had been bused, but not wiped down. There was food left on it from whomever sat there before me. My entree was baked chicken, and it was so salty I could not eat it. Two bites, and I was done! The dressing was bland. Sort of like eating a mouthful of unflavored garden mulch. Again, about two bites was all I could stomach. The green beans were edible, but kind of what you would expect to find in an old folks home, where no one has any teeth. They were soggy. I know some people like them that way; I am not one of those people. Their whipped potatoes were very much like wall paper paste in both taste and texture. They made me gag! Seriously. I did swallow the bite I put into my mouth, but it took great effort. The 'dinner salad' was okay, considering it was old iceberg lettuce and a lot of tomatoes. The tomatoes were fresh at least. The whole meal cost me about $16. Certainly not worth the price. read more

The food is always good but this place can get busy and the line moves at a fair pace. I haven't eaten in here. I usually head to the to go shop and grab a dinner or two. The chicken is fried to perfection and the veggies are good. My favorite is the crackling bread. So good. The staff are friendly and helpful. You just have to figure out the best time of day to go when the lines aren't long. It's such a popular lunch and after church spot. So if you go during those times, expect to wait. read more

first let me say we go here at least 1-2 month, and Today was terrible, "note to self" never go after the day shift has gone, went around 2:30/3:00pm, not crowded, EVERYONE AND I MEAN EVERYONE behind the line has a FROWN and angry face on,i asked for extra dressing on salad you would have thought i asked for Diamonds, I had to ask to have croutons, cheese, bacon bits, the lady was not happy, husband tried to ask if a dessert was custard Pie or not, and the salad lady looked at him like he was crazy, the meat lady husband wanted chopped steak and sweet potatoes , they were next to each other , she told him ! the vegtables are down there ask that man! that man had to be told several times we would like bread, and sweet tea. then the lady at the register , I told asked her WE will need someone to carry our tray, she rang the bell, the lady came got my husbands tray, i stood there and stood there , the lady left and another gentleman took over the register, he ignored me, the receipt for the next 3 customers he tried to give me, I said "is anyone coming for my tray? He rang the bell, I stood there again, finally the same lady that took my husbands came over and looked at the man in confusion, I said can you carry my tray? , she said I know that's why he rang the bell, I said the bell was already rang for me this is twice, I walked to where my husband was , and he said I was starting to worry, "I said they seem to think I'm carrying a pillow next to my chest for Looks!" she sat my tray down and walked away , she came back once to offer my husband a refill of tea, never picked upped the glass poured it from where she was standing, his cap and glasses were next to his tea glass, the lady at next table asked for a to go box , this "lady" went and got it and gave it to the other lady that was sitting there , not the lady who asked for it, the lady just looked at her, A WAITRESS , this person is NOT. I have owned, managed worked restaurants my whole life , and this lady would not even lasted 15 minutes if we hired her at all. we paid for our food and the cashier who happened to be the same lady that was at the foodline register, asked if I wanted to leave a tip for the waitress I said what waitress , if your talking about the lady that walks around and draws a salary and does nothing, NO , and I told her , I will never come back after 2;30pm again, she looked shocked, she didn't even remember me from the Foodline, poor poor service today, have NEVER had a problem in the many times we've been before . my guess is whoever was manager today just pissed off every employee in there . by the way i am carrying a breast pillow because i had breast surgery ..... do better people you work down from the Hospital read more

Southern favorites with great iced tea and perhaps the best strawberry shortcake I've ever eaten. When the restaurant was located in downtown Augusta I would frequently eat lunch there with my grandparents (early 1960s). Whenever I'm in Augusta it's the first place I go for lunch or supper. The food wasn't bad! The biscuit was actually pretty impressive and my baked chicken and green beans were good! My black eyed peas were over done and mushier than I would have liked. My complaint about the food was how salty it was! Service- on a whole the attitude of the employees left something to be desired. I came across only one person who I thought was friendly and helpful. My other issue with S&S? It was DIRTY. The walls, floors, furniture- yuck. This place needs a good hosing down! It was a bit nostalgic for me to go here, my family used to go in my home town after church on Sunday and meet my Grandparents. OKAY... SO MAYBE THIS IS JUST A ONE TIME THING! BUT THIS WAS MY EXPERIENCE! Its so fast pace in the line that the servers don't hear or either done listen to what you say that you want and just give you whatever. I ordered the chicken breast tampico and the woman manager served it to me after she slopped extra nacho cheese on it. I didn't ask for extra cheese and she didn't ask if I wanted it. So my fried chicken breast tampico was soggy under an inch of nacho cheese sauce. The bathroom smelled like urine. The servers were efficient and polite. Had the Hamburger steak, rice and gravy, and seasoned cabbage. Everything was great but the desert...bread pudding sucked.

I dined for lunch before the crowd came in. The out side looks like a plain cafeteria and the inside is no different. The look does go along with their cheap home cooked feel though. The line starts with salads and dessert, then moves to meats and starchy sides, next veggies, bread, and drinks. With so much variety there were several meal combinations. I had the baked chicken breast, yellow rice, and cabbage. The chicken was juicy and seasoned with seasoned salt and paprika. The rice was cooked in oil of some sort so it was a bit different but tasted ok. The cabbage was boiled and was lacking flavor, but the server supplied some hot sauce so all was well. In all the food was ok. The service was good. If you aren't able to carry your filled tray a server will help you. They also bring you any condiments and drink refills you need. You pay on the way out. I was in and out in 30 minutes so its a great lunch spot if you are short on time. Be sure to smile at the line servers if you want more than the single serving. :) read more

Been to this place for over 20 years, one thing still remains the same....the food will always keep you coming back. I can remember enjoying their scrumptous food after long days of school and their recipes seems to never changed, and I like that since alot of the times once I find something I like, the recipe seems to change for the worse. Everything from the salad to the bread is wonderful. And the wait staff never disappoint always willing to help with eagerness. Both of my grandmothers are really fond of this place. Recently my maternal grandmother died and she swore by this place, so now when I go here to eat I wont be pleasing myself but also 'grandma' in heaven!!! read more

Because this food is so good it make you want to eat like a pig. Yes they tend to speed you through the line. But I really don't mind. The prices are very economical. I only go through take out door because the food in the restaurant is tasteless and lukewarm. Every single time. However, that side is mass chaos. It's small and cramped with order taking and pickup on either end of a 10 foot counter. The food on this end is hot and tasty but it's rare that I get the exact order without correcting them. If you miss the cafeteria food from school, or you have fond memories of hospital food this is the place for you. Four of us went, Zero of us liked it. IT was bland, and surprisingly overpriced. There were no instructions from the servers as to what you could select. Perhaps they assumed since they have been a fixture in Augusta for years, you should know their business model. Or perhaps remember it from high school. I doubt if anyone who frequents this establishment will ever read this review, but I have posted it regardless of that likelihood. read more
