Visited Saban's for the first time last night and I loved it! Old school restaurant in all the best ways! Enjoyed a nice NY Strip Steak with sweetened carrots and rice pilaf. It came with whole mushrooms that I gave away to my stepmom who loves mushrooms much more than I do and she gobbled them up. Had a nice tasty bread pudding with coffee for dessert! My two favorite things: 1. Hamm's beer on tap. 2. Thousand Island dressing for the side salad that came with dinner. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. It was a Saturday night and we had a reservation which was helpful because every table was full when we arrived at 6pm. Tables opened up an hour later. Saban's also has a bar that had every stool taken with Bears fans watching the preseason game. FYI: There are no TVs outside of the bar area so please do not mistake Saban's as a sports restaurant. This is a hidden gem. The sign wasn't lit outside so we missed it. It's behind the police station. Once we entered it looked like a supper club. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Our waitress was friendly and joked with my nephew as he was being silly. We were hoping for prime rib. Which they only have on Saturdays. Unfortunately they had sold out 1 hour before we arrived. So choices we ordered was fried chicken, pork chop and cheeseburger. There was choice of salad or soup, fries, baked potato or mashed. Just like a supper club. All was delicious. We will definitely be back and come earlier to have the prime rib. And ask for the waitress we had. read more

Great Food and Warm Hospitality, but the Building Needs Attention Saban's Place delivers where it counts in the kitchen, no question there, and the overall experience is shaped by the fact that this is, first and foremost, a regulars' hangout. If you're part of the long-time crowd, and enjoy a good cocktail, (or many), everything about the place probably feels exactly right. For people visiting for the first time, a few things stand out. The food remains the strongest part of the experience. My fried chicken was cooked perfectly - crispy, juicy, and generously portioned with four pieces. The salad was fresh, sides were solid, and the kitchen clearly knows its craft. Hospitality also reflects that "family-first" energy. The welcome at the door felt sincere, the staff seemed to know half the room by name, and there's a comfort in that old-school, locals-only atmosphere. Service was acceptable but uneven. Our server was friendly, but clearly had too many stations. So drink refills lagged and follow-up took longer than it should. It wasn't a deal-breaker - just not as sharp as it could be if there were the right number of staff for the room. Where the gap really shows up is in the facility itself. The vintage charm is intact, but so are the worn chairs, tables, and floors, and the bathrooms need a serious update, re-fixturing, and regular cleaning during service hours. Regulars may see it as part of the charm - and that's fair - but for a fresh set of eyes, it reads as deferred maintenance. Bottom line: excellent food and genuine people. Just know you're stepping into a place built around the comfort of its regulars, and everything gets better after an old-fashioned or two. The moment we walked in I loved the feel of this place. Manhattan was Excellent, our server was very nice and helpful. The Food was excellent we all ordered the Prime Rib and it was cooked to perfection, with a side of carrots that were done right as well along with a baked potato to finish off an excellent meal. Lively joint, everyone on staff was kind & helpful, and the environment is just the sweet spot between warm & welcoming. Food - Everything fresh!! Best burger I've had in a good long while. I'm not usually a fan of the big burger but Saban's does it to perfection. Others gave top grades to the reuben sandwich and the broiled salmon. I have some friends who are regulars here and I was invited to join them. It's a hard place to locate even with navigation but it's really a neighborhood joint. Casual dining and the food is really fresh and they're known for their catch of the day. They were already out of the fish of the day by the time we got there. You see there is no freezer and everything comes in for the day in the morning and once they're out, they're out! I had the pork chops and they were perfectly seasoned and cooked and I really enjoyed the food. Decor is from the 70's and I don't believe they've had any updates but then that's why their prices are so good too. It's spacious and there's a full bar as well and a few televisions. read more

The Italian Shrimp appetizer was good. But the Atlantic Salmon was absolutley awful. Had to be sauteed from frozen. For $22 Absolutely no taste, not even a salmon taste. There looked to be dill all over it but tasted nothing. Couldn't eat much of it at all! Called today Sunday, but they are closed AND THEIR MAILBOX IS FULL! WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU? Service @ 4pm Sat, unlike previously, was awful. Only one (2) in the room and waited long for introductory drink requests and drinks, then long for appetizer request, then after done with appetizer waited to take food request. New to the area and In Search of a local spot. The place looks like late 70's old school restaurant bar.Dont let it fool you. The moment we walked in we were greeted by friendly faces. The place was filled with chatty regulars that were just as friendly as the staff. If you want a quite place it isnt for you somebody will talk to you. We had mahi mahi and butt steak both great! The mixed vegetables amazing l never tasted basic green beans and carrots with such flavor. The garlic pasta seemed to be garlic Ramen noodles which was my only negative dish but somehow I ate it all. It didn't taste bad. I expected something else I suppose. This is an old family style steak house with a bar. It is small so go early and check hours. You can check website and call to see what fish they are doing it changes. The meals are moderately priced. Dinner for 2 cost 75.00 definitely going back. Next time I'm leaving room for desert. read more

I have been going to Saban's at least once a year for the past 10 years. My Mother-in-Law and her boyfriend love this restaurant. We usually go in December. My MIL rents a small party room that they have. We went last night and the food was amazing and the girls that took care of us were wonderful. Lived in area all my life. Never heard of the place until a month Or so ago. If you like Del Rhea's Chicken Basket, the fried chicken here is insanely great. Better than Del Rhea's you betcha. This is not gourmet dining. It's a great salad bar, stiff drinks, and darn good food. This place is hard to find. It's east of East Ave on the ORIGINAL Joliet road all the way at the dead end. Longtime staple of the area. Food is truly exceptional as is the service. While many reviews refer to this as a neighborhood place - and it is - do not be misled. The quality of the food is comparable to anything that you would get in any of the best downtown Chicago restaurants. We know because we frequently dine at such establishments. Yes - the menu is limited but that's because everything is made from FRESH ingredients. As frequent diners, we have visited venues with extensive menus but always remain cognizant of the fact that many of those entrees will be frozen and micro waved. Not so here. And you can speak to the chef if you wish. Seafood and beef dishes are memorable Mixed drinks and wine are very good and reasonably prices. All the servers we've had have been personable and helpful. Even if you do not live nearby, Sabans is worth a trip. As I have emphasized in other reviews, if we do not support wonderful family operated places such as this, they will be gone and we will be left with "cookie cutter" chain restaurants and mediocre food. read more

This place is a trip! We were staying in the Midway airport area and checked out yelp. The usual chicago suspects of giordanas and lou malnatis etc popped up which we have done many times before. Sabans also showed with good reviews so we took a 15 minute Uber there which was at the end of a dead end road. Place was full of a bunch of old time regulars, always a good sign. Hostess and wait staff exceptionally friendly, service excellent. Food was also great. We orderd prime rib and cajun walleye, both were super and cooked to perfection. Had apettizers of baked clams and italian fied shrimp, both outstanding. Wine was reasonable and a generous pour. Only complaint was a limited beer menu. Sam octoberfest and Founders all day ipa the best that could be found. if you want a great meal in a pleasant setting without TV's blaring check it out. We will definitely go back! read more

Use to drive by this place before Joliet Rd was closed and became a dead end street- yet never stepped foot into until last weekend. A total throw back- dark and probably at one time smoky- with a salad bar option on most entrees. Our table of 4 went for fish on a Friday during lent ordering their Walleye, whitefish and fish n chips. My whitefish was sautéed in butter w/ a tasty lemony butter sauce, served w/ choice of potato, carrots, green beans or a combo. My cottage fries were decent but I was really pleasantly surprised that my carrots were fresh and quite yummy. More pluses were hot bread, generous wine pours, decent prices, good service and the elderly hostess named Dorothy that has been there forever and treats everyone like an old neighbor visiting for a bite. Saban's Steak House located in the far Southwest side of the city in a remote industrial area where time may have been forgotten. First walk into the establishment reminds you of the nostalgic lightly dimmed tavern restaurant your grandparents took you while holding your hands and the hostess greeted you with a warm smile calling you 'Honey'. The menu is a no thrill straight to the chase American Steak n Potato or Fish n Chips layout. I'd dined here multiple times and the steak (Rib eye, Prime or NY Strip) has always been consistently delicious matched with the authentic sides- either zucchini drenched with garlic olive oil, fries or slaw. It's simple but it works. The true authentic feel /décor coupled with home style cooking bring me back whenever I visit the South side. This is by far one of my top 10 diners in Chicago. read more

Back for another visit. Saturday about 6:00. Pretty busy and it impacted the service level. For example, the server never asked us if we wanted soup or salad bar and we had to ask for the soup offerings. And with different people bringing out the food, I did not get my cottage fries extra crispy as ordered. As for the food, we started with the spinach and artichoke dip appetizer. They definitely need to change the recipe. It was terrible. All spinach and little artichoke and yellow cheese all over it and served with bread and taco chips. But the pasta fagioli soup was very good as was the salad bar. And all of our fish dishes were very, very good, which included sautéed walleye, fried perch and blackened red fish. All 7 or 8 out of 10. We will go back but likely not during peak busy time on a Saturday night. read more

This place is so cute. By that I mean, I actually feel like I'm at someones grandmothers house for dinner. We went with a group of 5 on a Sat. night. We were able to get a table with no problem. The Walleye was not available that night. Dishes we ordered were: Swordfish (a special) , Half slab of ribs, and a couple of grilled chicken dishes. With the swordfish came with corn and basil and tomato. It was so tasty. The little old lady came up to us and told us that the cook bought the corn at a local farmers market. It melted in your mouth it was so good. The dish also came with rice. That was really flavorful as well. My grilled chicken sandwich was good. The fries were cooked perfectly and not over salted at all. No one in our group ordered the pan fried or regular fried chicken. It did smell great, maybe I'll give it a try next time. I took off points for the salad bar. It was pretty small and didn't really have a lot of options. They should have 2 salad bars, b/c sometimes there'd be a line. The cute old lady was so sweet. Checked out Saban's over the weekend, and had a great time here. Truly a hidden gem. I'd heard about the fried chicken, and it certainly delivered. A half chicken came with fries and a veg side for $14, affordable considering the large portion. The crispy batter was cornmeal based and lightly seasoned, the chicken was super hot and especially moist and juicy. Just plain delicious. The crowd at the bar was extremely friendly, offering us free chips and cheese plates that were being passed around. Everyone seemed to be regulars in for the Sunday Bears game. They had Revolution Pils on draft which was fresh and tasty as well. The bar area was smaller and divey, set off from the two empty dining room areas, to the right of the side entrance. You go here for the food and nostalgic atmosphere, which Saban's has in spades. It has a cozy vibe with dim lighting and quaint old-school decor. I hope they never change, it's a great throwback to places I used to visit with my grandparents as a kid. Excellent food. FRESH fish. Biggest piece of fish I've ever had in a restaurant. Recommend Walleye Cajun broiled. Fish and steak are a bit more pricey than I'm used to. Worth the extra $. Don't judge by atmosphere. If you want good food, this is the place. read more
