Same ole Safeway. Never learn. They wait until there's like 10 people in the only morning register open to call for another lane to open, people are seriously annoyed by then! Mornings are when folks are on their way to work...as in time crunch. I saw a few leave their baskets or put the one item back and walk out. That's what I did. I'm new to online coupons on the app and wasn't sure if I added my coupon correctly and the gal working simply said she would give the coupon no matter what for trying. I have lived in kauai for one year. Since July I have repeatedly complained and written about an employee whom is a threat to Safeway, the community, and myself. I am a 28 year Physician and a chief of medicine both in Hawaii and Chicago. However, management seems to ignore and allow this blatant employee to disrespect, intimidate, belittle, and speak and make customers including me feel unvalued. I am appalled as a citizen of Hawaii and supporter of Safeway that the store refuses to terminate DOTTIE. I am appalled that the Safeway company continues to allow this employee to interact with customers and she outright will not speak or respond to questions, greet guest, or say thank you. She actually looks at you like dirt and stares until you leave. Dottie finds it as a joke. She clearly says you can't do anything to me. What arrogance. I will not continue to support this behavior and have asked the news channels and media to take this story and investigate why Safeway refuses to terminate this clear cancer in their successful store ran by a great woman who understands the values of kauai. While tourists have returned to the island, many businesses are not staffed for the increased customer flow. We stopped in for a few essentials but were face with lines more than 30 deep in each of the two manned check out lanes. The 15 items or less clients were relegated to the self checkout which apparently has some operating issues. At any given time during the 30 minutes we waited to check out three of the four self serve kiosks were waiting for assistance. read more

Good place to pick up breakfast groceries if you're visiting Kauai. Having a Safeway card is helpful since the prices will be lower. You can pick up bakery goodies which make an excellent addition to a breakfast meal. I got the strawberry pudding cake and it was good. The poke at Safeway is good. I liked the shrimp kimchee poke and the spicy ahi tuna poke - it looks creamy with lots of green onions. And it has masago in it too I think. We tried the other flavors and I didn't enjoy it as much as the spicy tuna one. I would pass on the sushi though. We needed dinner on a late night once and Safeway was on the way to our hotel so we grabbed some deli sushi and yeah it wasn't great. I think the only decent one was the one that had mangos and avocado slices on top with spicy mayo drizzled. But otherwise come here for grocery essentials snd poke! read more

This supermarket is the best I saw on Kauai. We went to other supermarkets (the other Safeway in Kapaa area and Big Save in Koloa and this location is by far the best. There are 9 tables outside with umbrellas and great mountain views. The market is very clean, large, looks brand new (not sure if it is), no shady people hanging out outside, and has all that a supermarket on the mainland would have. There is also an indoor cafe seating area with music and a Starbucks. Lots of selection and food looks so much fresher than other supermarkets on the island. I would have done all my shopping here but I didn't find out about it until the end of our trip. I will be coming here for all my shopping on all future trips to Kauai. The people in the hot section have some work to do. They don't seem to want to be bothered or spoken to. The sushi people don't seem to speak English and it is very difficult communicating with them. I had to use sign language and gestures in order to ask for little sauce. read more

Store is much bigger than Kapaa. Always go to $5 Fridays. It'll be worth it. Load days are Tuesdays and Fridays. There's also a Bank of Hawaii and a Starbucks in there. Pharmacy is located in the back and its much bigger than Kapaa. Fresh cut fruit and veggies are made in the produce department. So much selection of poke and meats inside case. Always have your club card to get your gas points. read more

Looks good on outside but disappointing inside for most part. Pluses include 7 day bank inside and Starbucks with nice seating area. Bulk bins behind produce offer nice but inconsistent finds. Some organic produce. On the not good side the produce is way overpriced and often old and rotten. Lack of healthy options. Illogical arrangement of products. Careless management and staff. Frequently long lines that have caused us to walk out multiple times. We were so excited to have this store open but have never really found it to be a satisfying experience. Typically prefer also not very good Times down the street for better experience at lower cost. With stores like these you can see why Costco does so well on Kauai. read more

Most of the time we are pretty pleased with our shopping experience in the LIHUE store however, need to share the following to help them improve. * cashier placed eggs in bottom of bag, resulting in two cracked eggs * cucumber Kim chee from deli area was not throughly marinated a few times so flavor not consistent * not enough help at deli section so had to wait quite a while several times...ended up walking away * sushi is usually good, however, New Year's Eve was a disappointment because brown rice was not cooked properly...crunchy read more

Ok so I came into the store not expecting to find certain vegan products I get at home in CA sometimes at whole foods. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of vegan and vegetarian products one might want while here. I found my vegan hot dogs, chao cheese, vegan bleu cheese dressing, and a variety of non dairy ice creams. They had a lot of vegan meat substitutes to choose from too. My Safeway near my house rarely carries these items thus ending up at whole foods. Thank you Safeway for the options! Oh and the stores really clean and organized. Must stop by if you are in need of grocery. Oh and the prices weren't too high compared to mainland prices. read more

Love the store. BUT Don't go making a sandwich at the deli counter....you'll be there your whole lunch break. Waited about 10 minutes for the person in front of me to have her sandwich made. I knew then i should just leave the line but i was next decided to stay. Then the worker literally took 30 minutes to make my sandwich. -_- I had no time to eat on my lunch break, by the time I reached the office I had to go back to work. If your break is more than an hour, you can chance it & go. I wouldn't recommend it. The slowest sandwich making ever. Now I know why nobody is at that area at that specific time. PAINFULLY SLOW.....LIKE SLOTHS!! I think sloths are faster at the speed I saw this worker going... -_- I will probably never even go during my days off. I'll stick to making sandwiches myself. This Safeway is stunning, perfectly organized and has everything you could possibly need during your stay in Kauai. Many prices are comparable to what you would pay in Southern California, or at least not as expensive as we had expected. The selection is pretty mind-blowing and the store is enormous.
